Hongi Hika the man that the video was about he actually reeked havoc on the eastern coast of New Zealand decimating a lot of Maori tribes mine included this song and video bring to light the atrocities that were committed back then
Muskets being Alien Weaponry back then is the exact same comment I made on another reaction channel. Glad to see someone else draw the same correlation even if the band didn't realize it back then. I love the cinematography to this video. Btw its easy to headbang when playing an instrument bc you follow timing and headbanging helps keep timing. Same as hip hop artist who bob their head to the beat.
FYI the title is pronounced 'kai tongue-ata' - it literally translate to 'eat people', as that is what they did to their enemies after battle to dishonor them. The Haka 'dance' is a war dance in this instance, used to intimate their enemies (when you see the mighty All Black rugby team do it, it is as a challenge). Sadly these guys don't get much airtime here, despite playing big metal festivals in America and the likes of Wacken in Germany . Also, the brothers father is Maori. The two younger ones of the 3 band members were ~16 in this video. They just announced a local tour here for the end of the year and most of the venues they are playing at are small - the one they are playing at in my city for instance is the University bar (which is the 2nd biggest city in NZ). We currently have no covid in the community here , which is why they are able to have this nationwide tour. I saw them at bar here last year , and they weren't even old enough to drink in it at the time lol (drinking age is 18 here).
Holy cow, I'm from New Zealand and I didn't know about these guys. This was awesome! I'm not Maori myself, so I can't offer too much in terms of cultural insight, but to pronounce the song name : Kai (rhymes with eye) TANG(rhymes with tongue)-ah-tah. Emphasis/stress on the first syllable. Kai means food, Tangata means people.
The other fantastic band from New Zealand is Pull Down the Sun. Their music is more progressive, closer to Gojira, Mastodon and Tool. Both bands from New Zealand are amazing. Maybe the future of metal is somewhere in New Zealand, who knows. Greetings from Poland 🇵🇱 🤘
I feel like something new is happening in the metal scene. I hope it catches on. :) Orphaned Land too (example The Cave). And bands such as Jinjer feel like part of that too. A lot of new voices and perspectives. The most common comment on Denzel Curry's cover of Bulls On Parade is that he should start a metal band. I feel like the time is ripe for Metal aggression to become a bigger part of the music of the world.
Kia ora LeAnn's comment on muskets being 'alien weaponry' is actually a really huge thing, because the introduction of firearms to Aotearoa (New Zealand) had a profoundly destabilizing effect on life among the tangata whenua (people of the land, Tangata = people, whenua = land... and while we're at it, kai = food, so kai tangata is a fitting name for the meatgrinder that inter-tribal warfare become with the introduction of the musket) Prior to the introduction of firearms, warfare was considerably more limited in scope, and the spoils of war (indentured labour and material acquisition) not as extreme as it would become. The simple introduction of the musket, even outside of its employment by the British colonizers, shattered life as it was known. Economics, tribal politics, everything just suddenly changed by this alien weaponry. It's why the period following contact with Europeans but prior to the imposition of a colonial government, is collectively known as 'the Musket Wars' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musket_Wars
The song is describing the warriors tattoos “nga ta moko puhoro...” or warfare “nga mahi a Tumatauenga (work of the god of war/men)” The tattoo on his thighs look like Kiore design (burrowing of Kiore or native rat) and the mv was probably an actual retelling of a battle that happened to their tribe. I think they hid, then ambushed the invaders and that tattoo is a living depiction of that tribal history. ‘Kai’ means food/eat and ‘tangata’ is man/people so yeahh 😬 KIWI MAATE 🤘! They’re from a small country town btw, and I mean small bruh.
Ari - Ethan the Bassist recently left the band because of the toll touring was taking on him. He found a friend who plays Bass (who is from a Maori family) to replace him.
Nice video ladies. I am from New Zealand and this is part of our culture. Recommend you do a reaction on the 'haka', the Maori traditional war-dance. It's spine-tingling and very intimidating. It's performed during many different events, but some of the best ones are done by the All Blacks (our national rugby team) to their opposition before a game. The 'Kapa o Pango' versions of this are the best. 👍
I encourage you to watch some videos of the "Haka" as performed by Maori tribe members. It is used for many different events from marriages, to funerals, and even graduations.
These guys are great, their music, singing, everything. I'd love to see these guys live! Another young band is Liliac. They're names translates vampire bat in Romanian. The band members are as old as 21 and as young as I think 13. They have an album that's out and another coming soon. They're really impressive, I think you'd like them.
I think LeeAnn is right. While the name was inspired by District 9, I feel like they drew a comparison between the alien technology in the movie and how foreign the technology that colonizers brought to subjugate indigenous peoples was, since colonization and repression of indigenous people are recurring themes in their songs. And of course it is an epic name, which is always good when naming a metal band haha. I feel like the video goes back in time at the beginning as the blood falls upward, and then goes forward at the end as everyone falls down representing the deaths and subjugation of the indigenous culture. It is cool that they managed to include dance choreography in a metal song's video haha. I know, it is haka. ;)
Ironically enough it was us Maori who took advantage of some parts of Western culture, quite happily Hongi Hika is an incredibly renown Maori chief (in the video he is the man at the front of the war party when they do their haka with the patu/war club). He brought back muskets AND the word of god, so he himself set up the first established Christian/Maori faith in NZ. Although the history of our wars and trades with Pakeha (basically means 'not Maori') has many similarities to other stories of colonization - our differences mainly being ideological values and the relationship between human and earth. But Maori had slaves, and sold plenty of slaves to foreign powers, we reveled and grieved in the realities of war, I mean it was fairly common place to eat vanquished enemies. All I'm saying is don't mistake Maori for victims, we are warriors.
Your very correct!!! A lot of our ancestors refused to use muskets regardless of the power they yielded, instead prefering to stick to the traditional weapons of their ancestors. My ancestor Mananui TeHeuHeu was one such man, reknown throughout the land for his fighting prowess. As time went by and most tribes had aquired muskets it was a new phase of warfare with the settlers/English which lasted for 30 years.
Alien weaponry also count as Folk metal (due to traditional elements of their music) ... it's a very underrated genre (and a very diverse one because Folk metal from Poland will sound nothing like Folk metal from Mongolia)
Just an FYI for anyone out there, the ta moko (tattooing) is very deep in meaning and is done by an expert who knows the lore. Similarly, the haka is not to be taken lightly and should be properly taught and used appropriately for the occasion.
I seem to remember the crowd at one outdoor concert performed a haka for the band. The crowd was led by someone on stage. I think the band were shocked and thankful the crowd did it. There's a video on RUclips somewhere.
I've heard from some Mauri people that I know that the tattoos are sacred, but they don't mind if people want to get them and even do it for tourists sometimes. My understanding is that the only tattoos that are 100% for sure off limits are the face tattoos. Would you happen to know if that is correct?
From New Zealand, and awesome reaction ladies, and some impressive background work you did. To me Alien Weaponry are similar to Mexico's The Warning,in that they're 3 piece sibling units, that both started at a young age,and are the torch bearers, and are at the forefront of their genres,The Warning in hard rock, and Alien Weaponry in metal. Both bands really are offering a great alternative fresh edge that once heard, there's no turning back. Oh,by the way,Alien Weaponry are from Waipu,a small settlement nearly 2 hours drive north of Auckland, but still impressed by what you brought to the table
There are a lot of bands going back to tribal roots these days,The Hu (Mongolian throat singers),Alien Weaponry, Heilung (Viking tribal music). These boys were 16 and two of them were 14 I think when they wrote this song, and I believe they were the youngest band to sign a contract with Napalm records. Ya'll should check out The Hu-Wolf Totem, and Heilung-Hakkerskaldyr.

They were that good that young bcause the two brothers are second generation metal musicians. The younger brother especially is a literal prodigy with just an extraordinary natural talent.
Also I failed to mention they bulge the eyes and Stick out there tongue's to intimidate during a Haka. It apparently means: My mouth waters in anticipation that I will taste the flesh of my enemy.
Great stuff! The Maori people used to practice cannibalism - IIRC, the eating of fallen enemies as a mark of respect - and the band said that they didn't see why people in their own community have been avoiding talking about this, and that's why they made the song, to bring it back into their cultural awareness. If you like folk metal from there's a ton out there - even if we discard the European folk metal scene for the minute (which itself has a lot of very cool bands in it). Try Tengerr Cavalry - Cavalry in Thousands. They are Mongolian, much like The Hu, but waaaay heavier... and also sadly the frontman and composer died, so they won't be making any more music. Also try Bloodywood - Machi Basad for Indian metal (there are a good few others, but these guys are an excellent introduction). Orphaned Land and Melechesh are both Israeli bands (though with some members from other countries or ethnicities) who are often called oriental metal, and grouped with other folk metal bands, There's a wealth out there to find - depending on what you mean by "folk" you can find a ton of cool stuff.
> IIRC, the eating of fallen enemies as a mark of respect - Not really. It was a manner of disrespect. No form of insult could top turning your enemy into feces, so it was actually a Taboo across many Iwi, and was very protected for the participants to have strong ritual to perform the act, Kai Tangata. It was a fearsome practice, and not usually smiled upon by anyone. It was a means of taking your victims Mana, their prestige. "How can one define my act? A man of great fortune and esteem, now sits on my plate to fill my stomach. Does that not make me an even greater man?"
They are called Alien Weaponry is a concept of their music as a "sonic weapon" both politically and culturally. It's also a reference to Maori Warchants and Haka. Also, not surprised if they were influenced by District 9. The reason Kai Tangata was called what it is is due to consuming Mana or living energy by consuming the flesh of their enemy. It's also why in Haka their protrude their tongue. It means "I will eat you."
You might want to consider doing some video reactions for Bad wolves Zombie, Powerwolf Demons are a girls best friend, and Blood on the dance floor call me master.
My interpretation of why the one side all fell at the end is because they all got shot by the other tribe. With muskets, due to their slow firing speed and accuracy issues, would usually be fired in volleys, which would be why a bunch of people would all fall at the same time
I don't know how old you lady's are but in the 90s there was a book card and PC game vampires the masquerade were vamps and werewolves lived in the world. The werewolves finally got their own game called werewolf the apocalypse playing cards and tribe books and other books, now there's a ps4&xbox1 game coming out based on WTA called werewolf the apocalypse Earthblood and this song is used in one of the trailers and might be in the game too. Go check it out that's how I found out about this song and alien weaponry. 😊
I always buzz out whenever someone from around the world is checking out something from Te Ao Māori (the Māori world) and what our culture and customs are perceived to be from genuine thought and discussion from others not being of Māori descent. So thanks for reacting to the boys! So awesome, you defs need to check out Haka videos (particularly some from the All Blacks rugby team or check this link too: ruclips.net/video/ov5M8nXeBaA/видео.html Hope you ladies and everyone reading this comment are keeping safe in these times! Kia ora :)
Great reaction. You two seemed impressed by the women, actually you don't know the half of it. Yes it's true that Maori warriors would often eat the bodies of the fallen enemies to insult their families and take their mana (power). But the women also had their own form of retribution. Prisoners taken from a battle would sometimes be given over to the Widows who had just lost their husband (for want of a better term) in the fight. Their deaths at the hands of those women were truly terrible. Better to die in battle.
The Maori Warriors did engage in cannibalism. Once they defeated there enemy's they would eat them to increase there mana and to insult there enemy's. Apparently it was theorized to be Eroupean Propaganda but apparently Oral Tradition and Archeology suggest they very well did engage in such a practice.
Please try Zeal & Ardor it's satanist black metal wrapped with gospel music. Try the Devil is Fine song. Also I love how Leanne gets the references instantly.

yes, also it is the name of a Maori deity.
They ate their flesh as a way of defiling them.
> IIRC, the eating of fallen enemies as a mark of respect -
Not really.
Nonsense....The eating of the enemy is deemed as the greatest insult.
Best metal song of 2018!
Very educated view😁👍🏾 thank you
A song for a battle for sure
You might want to consider doing some video reactions for Bad wolves Zombie, Powerwolf Demons are a girls best friend, and Blood on the dance floor call me master.
My interpretation of why the one side all fell at the end is because they all got shot by the other tribe. With muskets, due to their slow firing speed and accuracy issues, would usually be fired in volleys, which would be why a bunch of people would all fall at the same time
I call this new genre of metal, "Tribal Metal". Alien weaponry and Shepards reign, Arkon etc.
Can you please do more Alien weaponry reactions🤙😁🔥🔥❤
Those kids are killing it!
There is way too much beauty in this video for me to remember what this was about again? Oh yeah, Kai Tangata...cool song! : )
Yall need to check out Shepherds Reign - Le Manu...they from new zealand as well.
The reason they called themself Alien Weaponry.... was because when they were younger they like Sci Fi movies like District 9 etc...
alien means foreing. so yeah its about the muskets
A friend has a family saying “When the Māori go to war don’t asked heaven for help. God knows better”
Powerful, song, powerful clip.

I always buzz out whenever someone from around the world is checking out something from Te Ao Māori (the Māori world) and what our culture and customs are perceived to be from genuine thought and discussion from others not being of Māori descent. So thanks for reacting to the boys! So awesome, you defs need to check out Haka videos (particularly some from the All Blacks rugby team or check this link too:

Hypa Hypa!!! U must react to Eskimo Callboy, Hypa Hypa!!!😎
this is more like modern groove metal but that came originally from thrash roots
In actuality, those are rifles not muskets in the video.
Good reaction girls,Alien weaponry played in Europe and were very well received. Check out some haka videos etc to give you an idea.🇳🇿👍🏼
Please try Zeal & Ardor it's satanist black metal wrapped with gospel music. Try the Devil is Fine song.

First time hearing this group. This song is nowhere near thrash, as subjective as any title is.... Maybe heavy metal....
