      Maybe because I am a boomer and I've read von Mises, Hayek and Rothbard, who were saying these things since the 1940s, I wasn't that impressed by the ideas of Deus Ex but I was impressed that somebody had balls to put them into a mainstream game. Because you are still labeled a crazy person if you quote from "Omnipotent Government" or "America's Great Depression" (Road to Serfdom is more mainstream) even today, let alone in 2000. There was supposed to be an entire alternate storyline available if the player chose to side with UNATCO over Paul, which was cut out to fit into the game's deadline. Sort of makes you wonder just how phoned-in the endings were because of the same deadline and how much better off they were in the original script or storyboards.

    • @Moonstalker
      @Moonstalker 5 лет назад +22

      @@NotHarpoGroucho The very first version of the game which was bugged as hell had no multiplayer, and yes that wasn't a mod at all.
      The devs added the MP component in a patch which allowed people to have a multiplayer, but people have to consider the multiplayer as a side thing than something where the game was totally made for.
      However the game because of multiplayer has spawned more mods because of this and even a modder to imagine an MMO mod which is totally great.
      The newer deus ex games will be totally forgotten while this one will stay out because it has modding and multiplayer.
      Also some mods added some good polish to thing game mostly in the areas where it was kind of weak such as AI, shooting mechanics which weren't great.
      But despite complaining about the shooting because I think it's a real weak point of the game. Most of its blueprints are solid.
      Like Ross is pointing out, the aiming is hard but the bullets should hurt a lot and that's the greatest point of the game regarding shooting.

    I think, of all things, what made this game so good was that the Conspiracies turned out so well. That first guy in the statue of liberty who gives you a rundown of conspiracy is a gaming 'woah' moment I'll remember forever.

      @@comicsans1689 Now these games can be shutdown by media and be targetted for being just: conspiracy theory baits, which are considered dangerous to people. Thus the game sales are not going to go well and the game wouldn't be able to exist. Especially when the video game market is so huge. An indie game might do this, but they will have to rely on publishers and if publishers dislike it they will shut the game down.
      Same like a taiwanese horror game that had critical mentions of the CCP. Almost all platforms shut the game down to the point you cannot buy it on most stores.

      What did it for me with this game is it manages to be a crash course in actual hacking/cracking (for the time at least.) A good 3/4ths of the passwords in the game are defaults, and can be forced with a minute of trial and error. Just another sign of how much the staff cares about the player. The programmers were ideological wackos who *want* you to be l337 in real life. Not like current brogrammers who want the most of your money for the least amount of effort. It's a real love letter to whoever plays it.

They want a real life test, but still in a controlled environment, that will decide the fate of the future of mankind. That's also why they only give you one weapon out of three. Plus, JC directly witnesses strong evidence of UNATCO's corruption at several points:
      * If you talk to Paul on the docks after he gives you your marching orders, he mentions that he botched an assassination of a triad member. Paul says it in a kind of offhand way and JC doesn't give any indication that anything is amiss with such an order, but right off the bat, it's Paul telling JC that UNATCO is corrupt. Police shouldn't be assassinating anyone.
      * JC was given an illegal order to murder Lebedev, who had surrendered and was not resisting arrest.
      * Walton Simons has the run of the UNATCO HQ, even though, as far as anyone tells JC, Simons is just the director of FEMA. This is evidence that UNATCO has a secret chain of command, unaccountable to democratic checks and balances.
      * Walton Simons has the same type of prototype nano-augmentations as JC. This is evidence that he is some sort of covert operative.
      * Walton Simons walks into a UNATCO cell, conducts an interrogation, then straight-up murders an unarmed, non-resisting NSF soldier, and none of the UNATCO officers object or even seem surprised.
      * Dialog from one random UNATCO agent indicates that every NSF soldier that was arrested was executed without having been given a trial. Illegal and fascist.
      * There is a cure for the Gray Death that is being kept a secret from the public.
      * UNATCO installs killswitches into its augmented agents, without their knowledge or consent.
      * When Manderley tells JC about the killswitches, he seems outright terrified by the people he's working for.
      It is utterly naive to think that JC could just resign from UNATCO, and what "other authorities" could JC contact? The conspirators obviously have their fingers in at least some American bureaucracies, given Simons' position. Even assuming the FBI or DOJ could do something, while those wheels are turning, Paul is dying. And who realistically believes that the kind of people who are responsible for the above are just going to let a multibillion dollar superweapon walk off and find a new career?
      So JC really only had two options: become an assassin for corrupt, unknown and unaccountable powers or help his own brother. Under the circumstances, the latter is an eminently reasonable choice.

      More like analyitcal thinkers who are interested in the future happen to guess right sometimes - if you're excited about this level, get into Philip K Dick. Though the WTC thing is "pure" coincidence - though I do sort of believe that events converge upon significance and sometimes apparent coincidence manifests similarities in that way, because in spite of our material-based perspective, events are primary and the material which expresses them is secondary, which seems backwards from our typical cause-effect understanding til you approach life resolutely from a place of "I think therefore I am." But yeah, that said, a meaningful coincidence is still a coincidence. We just tend to devalue the word coincidence as if it doesn't mean anything. Carl Jung famously disagreed.
      But yeah, if you get into sci-fi in general, you will see a lot of oddly specific touches and traces of the future. "If you cut into the present, the future bleeds out." - William S. Burroughs

There is a doctor, a firearm guy, etc. that you slowly get to know. There is petty drama and hidden secrets just like a real office, and it seems like a safe place you can rest from the danger of your missions. When you break out of prison and find yourself needing to escape from this office, its really a fantastic narrative gaming moment.

    Regarding how you can beat the game without killing anyone, I remember when I first tried a method of sparing Anna Navarre at UNATCO that I had learned about on the TTLG forums. You can lure her into the prison cell area and barricade her in with a metal crate, then wound one of the guards near the front door so that he flees through it and unlocks it for you in the process. This is a game exploit, sure enough, but the thing is that Deus Ex _actually plans for this eventuality_. Later on when you're on your way to confront Gunther Hermann at the Templar Cathedral, his lines of dialogue are completely different, and he does not act as though you killed Agent Navarre.
    Incidentally, you can spare his life too, if you can manage to wound him until he flees.

    • @daegranos
      @daegranos 6 лет назад +52

      Nope, he's right. There are two infolinks from Gunther that change depending on the state of the AnnaNavarre_Dead flag. One is right after escaping UNATCO HQ (Won't play at all if AnnaNavarre_Dead = false) and the other is in the templar cathedral (Text is different depending on if AnnaNavarre_Dead is true or false). Other than those two changes the game behaves as if Anna Navarre is dead once you escape from UNATCO.

    One thing that always fascinated me about all of Ross's dives into Deus Ex is how they demonstrate how completely differently two people can experience the exact same thing. Specifically here - the gameplay. I look at how Ross plays it, and his description of the gameplay and I'm just... wut? What game is even talking about? It never even occurred to me until literally seeing these videos that you could even get the idea that you should play this like an ordinary shooter. It's a stealth game for goodness sake! To me, absolutely everything seemed to cue me on to the fact that this was much closer to real life: For sure, I'm an awesome agent with awesome enhancements, but if I'm gonna take on dozens of armed opponents I gotta be ninja-batman. Sneaking, observing, planning, silent takedowns, move the apprehended suspects... that was and is the game for me, with all Deus Ex! I don't think I killed anyone until Majestic 12 came into the picture, and then I was so pissed off about Paul and it felt to me like everything shifted. I wasn't a police officer anymore, I was just a lone guy fighting a desperate fight against an actual global takeover conspiracy.
    Anywho, loved to see someone actually diving into those deeper layers that really pulled me in too back in the day, and presented in such an awesome way! Though that gameplay side of it will never not be fascinating to me :p

Yeah, Accursed Farms was recommended by the site itself. I think it has something to do with me watching editorial style videos from MandaloreGaming, GManlives and Neverknowsbest. The last four days I've been binge watching the game dungeon playlist. I caught a glimpse of Deus Ex being wedged right in the middle of the timeline but I bid my time nonetheless, even though Deus Ex being one of my favourite games of all time. The corruption from the rich is a problem but, using an overarching problem to explain all things that could possibly be caused by it is lazy. Reminds me of how, even though I obviously believe climate change is happening, explaining every single severe weather event as "climate change" isn't really convincing. There's no way to establish much of a causal link so it just makes it sound like you're crazy. It's probably right but, it's a bad argument. In this case I just straight up don't think there's a link, and if anything is keeping Ross down, it's the fact that this isn't easily monetizable and the long-form videos aren't preferred by the algorithm.

      Consider why this isn't easily monetizable and why videos like this aren't preferred by the algorithm. The answer is that videos like this are exactly what the algorithm is designed to hurt. Of course others that aren't on the exact same topics are also hurt but... we know that YT manipulates the algorithm to be morel likely to show the things it wants you to see.
      Noticing this specific video isn't necessary - constructing a system that specifically hurts this category of videos? Not so far fetched.

      @@badbeardbill9956 You're being vague. What "Category" can this algorithm detect? You aren't talking about the presence of violent content or swearing, you're talking about political speech. You're talking about an algorithm that can successfully generate text for an algorithm to work with (check the auto-generated subtitles to see how well that works) and then to intelligently discern the INTENTION of those words and phrases.
      I'm not some highly skilled programmer, I wouldn't be able to write these algorithms myself at my current level of knowledge. However, I know the current status of AI, how effective Google's algorithms are at successfully identifying things, and how good voice to speech is. Those are all lacking too much to make this idea feasible. So yes it's far fetched, maybe not for the reasons you think. My point is it's in the sea of content so a human would have to identify this kind of content and bury it for that reason.

    • @badbeardbill9956
      @badbeardbill9956 4 года назад

      @@YukonHexsun No. They don't have to care about intention at all - in fact it's obvious that the algorithm doesn't. It only needs to identify key words. This is already documented - videos get flagged very quickly in some cases. Indeed it's also possible that a "blacklist" of sorts exists.
      I've looked into the state of programming, AI, speech to text, and so on is. It's a lot better than you'd think. And with the resources Google has, it really is not far fetched that an algorithm exists to purposefully parse content that Google doesn't want you to see - indeed we already know this algorithm exists, the question is what it's looking out for.

    Meanwhile at Bethesda: "So what should the institute's reasoning be?" "Uhh I dunno, lets just use that 'its too complicated for you to understand' crap" "Phew, I thought we were gonna have to give motivations and goals to our characters and settings!" "Yeah! It's a good thing our job is reliant on a subjective medium and all the professional reviews will focus more on bugs than the fact we haven't written a decent story since morrowind!"

    • @GeorgeMonet
      @GeorgeMonet 3 года назад +7

      The Institution's motivation is pretty clear. They decided that every person on the surface is an unnecessary danger to themselves. But they don't think that they have the resources yet to wage a full scale war and wipe everyone out directly. So they want you to get a part that would let them increase output of their main reactor so that they can ramp up production of the gen 3s. With that they would have a stronger army and could shift from simply maintaining security through constant subversion and manipulation on the surface to more direct warfare. Once they control the surface they can directly harvest the resources above ground where there is still a lot of radiation which they would then bring underground to increase their living space and thus population where it is safe.
      See the Institute members feel that they are superior to the common rabble on the surface and the only ones who should inherit the future. That also means they believe they shouldn't have to do the dirty manual labor jobs. So they put alot of effort into making organic robots to do the manual for them. Since the gen 3s are still robots and not people the Institute doesn't view them with the same disgust as the people in need of termination and removal as the people on the surface. The ones who are constantly attacking and assaulting, robbing and enslaving each other. They feel like the masters of their domain because they make and control robots that look and act just like people. And that is part of their problem. Because the gen 3s look like people there are some empathic members of the Institute who think that the gen 3s should be treated more like people while others view the gen 3s purely as robots. But regardless of where the Institute falls on the gen 3 issue they all agree that the rabble on the surface need to be purged. Hence why so many in the Institute have no issue with using the commoners as test subjects or kidnapping them and replacing them with gen 3 robot lookalikes.
      Father probably isn't even your son. If you follow the story closely you find that the person who introduces himself as your son has actually been in control of the Institute for over 100 years. He was the same man who ordered the capture of your baby from the vault.
      If you actually paid attention to the story instead of taking issue with it not being as constantly stupid as Fallout 1, 2 and New Vegas you would have learned what the Institute's motivation was.

      Vault city’s president wanted to hear nothing short of not estimating the ghouls in Gecko, yet they still welcomed wastelanders around their city and even in with a day pass, although they made certain that none could become a citizen.
      But back to what you mentioned about Father not being your son. I saw the Fallout timeline out of curiosity and I saw the time of the vault in fallout 4 being opened and “Shaun” being met didn’t really make sense, because “Shaun” seemed to be much older than he should given the time that passed.

    • @RTukka
      @RTukka 2 года назад +1

      @@GeorgeMonet Because one line where Kellogg refers to the "old man" in his memory of the vault kidnapping? Extremely thin. And if your theory is correct that just makes the story and character motivations far *less* coherent.
      I agree that the Institute does seem fairly united in its disdain for surface dwellers, but it's not a very compelling motivation for anything that they do.
      They pretty much seem to have everything they want, and it is hard to believe that the Institute really believes the surface constitutes an existential threat to them, and they also seem ambivalent about scav operations, treating them as unfortunate shortcuts rather than something they want to keep doing in the longer term.
      Also, their main paramilitary division is called the Synth Retention Bureau. Conquest doesn't really seem to be in the Institute's culture.

God damn. Gunther and Anna have some quips about how jelly they are that nanoaugs are meta breaking as fuck.
    -You can nonlethal takedowns MIB's. They have a text file talking about the agent P series, and how they detonate if their heart stops, to erase all evidence of them ever being there should they die and be prime for dissection. Hence, if knock them out their heart is still beating, they won't explode violently.
    -Nonlethal is supposed to be hard. Your brother urges you to practice morality over efficiency, but you also meet coworkers who have a different philosophy. Taking the high ground is not easy, but you do get some pats on the back for it, and sometimes even a reward or two.
    -Damage *is* handled by skills, but it's far less noticeable than the ability to hit things consistently.

For most NPCs, you can one shot them with the baton this way, but for MIBs or those mech cyborg guys you see later in the game it'll take a charge or 2 from the stun prod.

    Fun fact. The Swedish Air Force is scrapping all of their 97 JAS Gripen fighter planes (many of them are brand new) because there is a new, more modern jet avalible on the market.
    How much did those 97 planes cost the swedish tax payers? Anywhere between 60 to 100 BILLION kronor. Or 7,18 to 11,97 billion dolars. Fuuuuck! So naturally we ask the question, which company produces these planes? SAAB, one of the biggest Swedish companies.
    Now while you could argue the fact that the Air Force is important (which it is) it feels strange to me that while the Swedish Defence Force buys plane after plane many of the regular soldiers are unable to get all the gear they are supposed to have because "there is none avalible" because of funding problems.
    Hmm... Add to this the fact that apparently many of our pilots are not getting enough air time to practice some very essential skills like attacking ground targets because of, what else?, funding problems.

      To top it all off, and this is where I almost start to reach for my tinfoil hat, our last ÖB (that's Överbefälhavare or Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces) actually questioned why the Swedish Defence Force spent so much money on planes when we litterally had soldiers wandering around with holes in their boots or clothes of the wrong size and promised to fix te issiue. Fast forward six months and he suddenly retired with no real explanation without having fixed the problem.
      Wow... Just plain wow... Granted it may be the influence from the review talking, but no matter how you look at it it's looking shifty as all hell.

    You know the beauty of this game?
    As popular as it was at the time, they never went with wild atmosphere designs for the future 2050's.
    They kept it very tame which is actually realistic af!
    Realistically, it won't be at least another 100 years before we see those flying cars and 200-story apartments drowned in the neon sea.
    So I think 2050's will most likely look not much different than now, which makes Deus Ex terrifyingly more realistic.

      I don't think we'll ever see flying cars, for a few reasons that almost never get touched upon:
      - spending energy to fight gravity is very inefficient, when you can *not* do that by using roads instead.
      - navigating in 3 dimensions is vastly more difficult than on roads, even assuming we'll be able to fully automate that - computers do fail, and a manual control will always be necessary in emergency situations. You don't want a bad capacitor to cost you your life, don't you? This would mean drivers would actually have to receive pilot training because they are now operating aerial vehicles, which among other things can be used to drop bombs or straight out be a bomb (9.11) so in case anyone goes mad or wants to kill people, that 's a great tool.
      - flying under influence of alcohol, drugs or medicine is dangerous enough as it is - unless we can develop 100% self-driving flying vehicles that will never ever fail and cause death (Tesla)
      - it would produce a lot of noise, making everyone require hearing protection to not go bonkers after a few weeks of living in a city
      - it creates new possibilities of catastrophic failures without requiring user neglect or malice - right now if your engine breaks down you just need to push your car to the side and call assistance - with a flying vehicle you may crash and die with your entire family because of the same level failure - this would require much, much tighter production standards as well as much more frequent technical inspections which would both drive the cost through the roof (pun intended) and be annoying as heck. Imagine having to fly your car to a workshop every month instead of driving it there once a year. As such any self-identified technical issue would immediatelly ground your flying car to save the lives of yours and others in case that will cause the car to drop from the sky. So you'll need to haul your car to the workshop more than anything.
      - right now we are heading towards an energy crysis, and flying cars would be extremely wasteful in terms of energy consumption, no matter what propulsion technology we can develop - you still need to counteract the gravity force, and there's no shortcuts there.
      - Assuming we do survive the energy crysis and develop everlasting, practically unlimited sources of energy, that energy still needs to be trasmitted to charging stations etc.
      - We'd need to develop entirely different battery technology if flying cars would be electric, or develop tiny portable nuclear reactors which I don't think we'll ever see due to how much pressure and heat is needed, not to mention having millions of nuclear reactors flying and crashing all over the place would be extra risky, unless somehow they can be made indestructible as well - I think we'd probably be still needing different kind of fuel, and not uranium rods to power our cars.
      I think even if all the technical issues are ever resolved, it would still be incredibly wasteful so I think only a handful of billionairs would go for it, and they would still not us that as daily drivers, and at least one would die in a tragic incident.
      Add any option of corporations cutting cost and ignoring technical issues (Takata airbags) costing people life-changing injury or death.

    You got discussions on the ethics and consequences of cybernetic implants and hooking your brain up to the internet, what defines a human in a world where you can replace basically every part of your body with robot parts, AI gaining self-awareness, memes (not those memes, the other memes), refugees, politics, etc.
