    Played this at a LAN party once (with only a single copy of the game): eight people started in the same town, and over the course of seventeen consecutive hours, spread out so far apart and got so lost, we never saw one another again. Some people never left the forest. Others found a mountain covered in yetis. Some ended up fighting mechs.
    My two strongest memories of this day were, 1) several of the melee fighters finding a grenade launcher that leveled up their ranged stat every time they shot it which I, the only ranged character, was too weak to wield, and 2) I had to wear the same hideous teal and pink hat for something like eight hours because nothing better would drop.

      @@notinspectorgadget It was the most clear innovation that was, for some reason, never reproduced, even in games that are survival oriented where you have different foods that restore certain amounts of hunger, you never got any sort of "Leftovers".
      Especially a problem in a game like Fallout New Vegas, that has several levels of hunger that come with various debuffs, MREs are completely useless since they restore so much hunger, that in order to make them worthwhile you need to wait until you are starving before using them.
      Especially since the "Survival" skill only increases how much hunger food restores, rather than improving how efficiently you ration it out. Having it so that you eat more than you need to at low survival skill and higher survival makes you less wasteful would be a good use of that mechanic.
      There is so much potential for such a simple mechanic that yes. it IS shocking that I haven't seen it in any game since.

      @@Selnathorn No excuse, having it programmed where it only subtracts the amount that you need to top yourself off rather than draining all of it isn't going to take much longer, if any longer, to code. The extra asset to represent the item being partly used would only require one extra state at minimum and at most a simple chickenometer.
      Having it programmed to drain MORE than is needed at low survival won't take any more effort than making high survival skill increase the total amount of health/hunger it can restore.
      The effort vs outcome is vastly in favour of the game, Since using the healing mechanic is going to be something the player is going to use throughout the ENTIRE experience.

But the fact that the music is so disconnected from the gameplay really shows how little the actual developers and the composer worked together. The same happens in Oblivion when the music suddenly switches from a serene, mellow tone to a holy-shit-demons-are-attacking intensity... when a mudcrab is after you. There used to be an essay around called "The Continuous World of Dungeon Siege", which gave some technical details of how the world worked. In essence, the world is made of numerous small sections with their own coordinate systems, which are linked with instructions on hew to transform from one coordinate system to another, and all coordinates are relative to such a section. There was a lot of work to dynamically drop unimportant data but keep important data, and cope with bits of world disappearing at any time in game scripts.
    The world is almost unmappable as it would wind back through itself it you tried to flatten it all out. Also direction-indicators to tell you which direction other players are in proved very difficult to create.

      For those passing through...
      In DS2 you have to hold down the attack button on an enemy for your currently selected character to fight them by default. The setting for clicking once and having your character continue fighting on their own is tucked away in the in game options tab.
      A good strategy is to take the time to get every character to level 1 in nature magic, that way they'll have access to the basic healing spell (put it in an auto-cast slot in each character's spellbook) Summon Teleporter, and Transmute.
      This way you'll save on potions. And because spells grow in power as your magic skill rises, your healing output will gradually increase.

      Last time I played I did a 2-character party with me and Taar. Turns out having a nature mage tank and a sniper combat mage is kinda broken. The books in the game help explain some backstory and npc's help give light on the situation. You are supposed to learn that the main villain corrupted all the wildlife in Ehb and made a deal with the Krug to make them overwhelm the 10th legion so he could usurp the throne and take over the land. The villain (Gom) is exacting revenge because he was stopped during a war with the 10th legion years prior. Yeah it's a pretty generic and simple story; but there is a plot. Some books will even tell you the purpose of some of the places ingame, like that large dungeon with those mucosa spiders on your way to Glitterdelve mines, and even how those spiders first appeared there.

Something about assembling a "posse" of colorful, varied people with their own distinct personalities really appeals to me (I think that's why I also love movies like _Kelly's Heroes_ and _The Dirty Dozen,_ incidentally). That's why I always mod _Fallout: New Vegas_ so that there's no companion limit. It's just so much fun to roam the wasteland with your gang of 8+ hardened warriors (and more if you have mods that add additional companions) laying the smackdown on any bandits or legionnaires who would dare to cross your path.

      Darkest Dungeon isn't exactly a game in a genre where character writing is very important (dungeon crawler with some roguelike influences), but its lineup of classes has this sort of feel to me. While individual "heroes" are generic, the classes have this diverse variety of designs, dialogue and backstories that help to make these characters feel memorable despite being in a genre that normally leaves everything about your characters up to imagination (not that there's an issue with using your imagination of course, DD still encourages it even).
      In just one team, you can have a King Baldwin IV expy who's characterized as a warrior poet, a barbarian who was exiled from her tribe, a noble woman who decided to become a tomb raider with a dark sense of humor, and a stoic bounty hunter with a long list of names for him to take revenge on. And that's just four classes I picked mostly at random!
      Might be why I'm drawn so much to mods that add new classes: They help make an already colorful and motley cast even more so! Why not have that same King Baldwin dude team up with a big beefy gladiator who fights eldritch abominations with his bare hands and has a short temper, a gay undead(?) ninja from Japan and a big titty monster hunter who may or may not be a Belmont descendant?

    On the topic of respawning enemies: Yes, I hate this also. Killing off enemies in a single player game should feel rewarding. When they don't respawn it gives you sense of accomplishment. Diablo one for example. I loved looking at the carnage of all the bodies littering the floor. I liked how in certain caves in Elder Scrolls Morrowind once you clear them out they stay finished. In that game when you killed a NPC, even if was a bandit in a remote location, they stayed dead forever.

    • @Marcelelias11
      @Marcelelias11 3 года назад +3

      I prefer respawning the way later Elder Scrolls games do it, where it takes in-game days for it to happen. It makes the world feel alive, since just because you cleared out a bandit cave, it doesn't mean it's going to STAY that way forever. On the other hand, it does suck if you just killed someone and they get right back up or reappear. Unless the game story/design HEAVILY makes up for it, it's bad design in my book (and even then it might not make it satisfying).

    • @maylabrown4584
      @maylabrown4584 2 года назад

      @@Marcelelias11 It'd be cool if in later Elder Scrolls Games they randomize what respawns, like if I killed 3 orcs, 2 nords and 1 redguard then I don't want to see that next time I go back.
      I want to see like 3 dark elves, 1 breton and 2 wood elves.

    • @LucasRCD
      @LucasRCD Год назад

      That DOES happen in Dungeon Siege II and its expansion in a few areas, both optional and mandatory. Enemies will stay dead sometimes after certain events. Enemies won't respawn all the time either, and they usually only respawn if you save and quit the game rather than walking back from where you came from.
      It was kinda necessary to implement respawning enemies due to the overhaul of the level up system, as it's no longer just individually leveling a stat up one point at a time and THAT counting as a level up; the introduction of traditional experience points makes it kinda necessary for respawning enemies to exist so it doesn't become clunky in terms of balancing. It also allows for more experimentation with skills as you can more easily re-spec without it crippling your growth unlike in the first game.

    I realize I'm kinda late to the party with this comment, but you should always let your nature mages keep at least one spell, so they can heal later on. Gives them something to spend their mana on and cuts down on the amount of potions you use. By all means turn them into ass kickers with a big ass mace or something. But healers are useful even if they are only healers for a secondary spec, decked out in armor and bashing a dude's head in instead of some twat with a stick and a bath robe.

    • @kc-ue2kj
      @kc-ue2kj 6 лет назад +11

      Spot on right there. You can't really opt for healing potions all the time tbh. I don't know how Ross does it, but I tried to play the game once with just relying on potions to heal but I always ran short of supply. I found it imperative to have healers just in case. Also, in the Hard difficulty potion drops become less frequent.
      The Aranna expansion sort of fixed some of the discrepancies in the original, one them being the addition of equipment exclusive to non stregth-type classes. It was opposed to the original where only the ones with the most Strength can get the best weapons and armor. The mages and archers can have their own great equipment in the Expansion. They don't have be a twats walking in around with a stick and a bath robe anymore hehe.

The dolts who bought the license didn’t even try to make their sequels anything like DungeonSiege. They just used (and ruined) the franchise name and kept discarding all the best parts of the original.
    It also amazes me that, TWENTY YEARS LATER, in other games, we still have to sit through zone loads when DS had a streaming world in 2002 where you could have a battle straddling right over a zone boundary without a hitch. Did computers get crappier over time or what? Why wasn't this standard by, like, 2005?

    Just beat Dungeon Siege myself, and I gotta say, it's a neat game. My party was 5 melee fighters, 1 archer, 1 nature mage, 1 combat mage, and that generally worked well for me, can't imagine going through the game without at least 1 mage, especially for the multi heal spells. I did have to knock the difficulty down to easy about halfway through the goblin dungeon, those AoE flamethrower enemies just happened to cross my bullshit threshold.
    The GoG release plays relatively fine out of the box (Although I recommend you patch/mod it), minus limited resolution options and 4:3 ratio, and about a dozen crashes by the end of the game, weirdly enough it didn't crash until the first 8 or so hours in. Guess it gets ever so slightly less stable the further you go, guess that's the price you pay for no load screens in a game this old. Also the GoG/Steam releases are missing expansions for DS 1 and 2, and it spits you back to the main menu upon killing the final boss of DS1, instead of giving you the ending cinematic (which isn't anything special, bit of lore, but still...)

    Hey Ross, if you wanna have a supped up badass roving gang of beat downs, have you heard of a game called Mount and Blade: Warband?
    It's a rather old indie game that's a medieval sandbox where you can do pretty much anything. I started a play through where I was hired as a tax accountant by a lord, then I stole the tax money to upstart my trading empire, and got *mad* bank after a few in-game months. When I got filthy rich, I then used to fuel up my weak caravan guards into an army in their own right, and I started making the rounds across the map until I saw a town which was particularly weak with guards, then took it by storm and became a sovereign ruler of a new upstart warlord nation, and dubbed one of my named companions into a lord and granted him land which he now owns, making a new entity on the map who fights for me and me only.
    Oh, and I did end up paying that lord back of the stolen tax money after the fact, but he kind of hates me so I stopped talking to him. Now I literally have so much money from village tithes and taxes that I have no idea how to spend it fast enough to get guards, mercenaries and conscripts to protect my singular town and villages from an entire angry Kingdom.
    I tried taking one of their castles but the kings army pretty much immediately put a stop to that shit. My personal army of 80 foot soldiers with a few armoured units mixed in vs 260 mounted knights, veteran archers and armoured sergeants is a bit of a curve stomp.
    And the best part of the game, is the combat is super awesome. It's almost like a fighting game with RPG elements in it. Plus you can fight right beside your army if you're brave, stupid or well equipped enough and kick as much ass as anyone! I think my favorite weapons are the Bastard Sword, MorningStar, and of course, a nice solid throwing spear.
    Anyways, that would be my suggestion for a game dungeon. Have fun!
    (P.S. Rhodoks 4 lyfes!)

      I'm afraid Ross won't see this in the RUclips comment due to the RUclips update that jacked up his gear wrench :P, but he did tried before so I can't complain...best try and format this story of yours to his forum so hopefully everyone (himself included) can see it.
      Honestly, you should start getting Perisno on the workshop for M&B Warband as well...but lately, the Dev of the plug-in is kinda having ALOT of problems, so I seriously doubt they can recover after how messed up it is now...I kinda lost faith after that since that plug-in IS. SO. GOOD...the combat is FANTASTIC, the music is PHENOMENAL...but the way it is designed acts like a new-gen Dark Soul except with an army...you cannot go 5 seconds in this game without running into cultist worshipping eagles, edgy lancer jackasses, the enemies goes ON AND ON...THEY NEVER STOP...as Ross said on the show before, "It's just a never ending nuisance!"
      ...But not all hope is lost, if you start off on the Redwood Nation (or just go straigth to the province if you start off somewhere, but I seriously doubt that even you can survive the journey due to how many of those former savages wandering around), you can get some badass Elven archers and knights that can knock these bastard stone-cold dead (with a certain degree of being alive so you torment their filthy anti-self preservation) and take them as prisoners...the only way you can make an economy is by selling slavers, and those prisoners you've taken worth a thousand more than the taxes that the lord gave you...it is kinda couterintuitive to everything my morality promises me though, but oh well, my mace won't clean the blood off itself.
      And last but not least, the technical difficulty...it's not that the enemies can be hard...but sometimes crashing right in the middle of the battle doesn't inspire confidence or sanity either...the plug-in also takes TOO LONG to load into when you jack-rabbit it...oh, and did I mention the plug-in also KILLS OFF your saves after the dev updates it? Yeah, me too.
      Anyway, hope you've read this...otherwise, I might just format this too since it's book-worthy tbh.

    I have to admit, I like the idea of a protagonist who isn't some predestined hero, but just an everyday farmer who woke up one morning and was sick of random monsters and other manner of beasts tearing up his crops. I get so tired of prophecy-style hero stories where a specific individual turns out to be some kind of uber-badass and hardly anyone questions such claims from the player character more or less.
    Ironically, even though I get tired of prophecy stories I do really love The Elder Scrolls games, although I wasn't a huge fan of Skyrim. At least in the Elder Scrolls games there are those who do question whether or not your character is who they claim they are, and not all of the games make you the same level of hero. For example, in Morrowind you're a reincarnated god being and in Oblivion you're a champion figure but you're technically a secondary hero when compared to the character of Martin.
    I digress, but it's definitely refreshing to play as someone who rises to make a difference not prompted by fate, but by their own agency. I haven't played this game so I could be getting the entirely wrong impression of how things begin, but if I'm right then I can't help but appreciate traversing such a route.

    Ross touches on something at the end when he says "this game might be ok if it wasn't named Dungeon Siege 3. As a Dungeon Siege sequel, I give this a failing grade." There are a _lot_ of modern "soft reboots" of classic franchises that I feel are exactly the same. Prometheus & Alien Covenant aren't bad sci-fi movies, but they are bad Alien movies. Same with the modern Terminator movies (though Dark Fate isn't too bad except for the name). 10 Cloverfield Lane and the Cloverfield Paradox are both screenplays that were originally completely unrelated to Cloverfield, but they decided to tie them in because fuck you, both would have been much better without the tie in.
    All the good/unique movie/game ideas are getting [FRANCHISE NAME] tacked onto them to try and drive sales with name recognition.

      I disagree on Prometheus and Alien Covenant. They are bad movies with high quality visuals.

    After watching this video 3 times, might be my favorite Game Dungeon, I finally got me a copy.
    Let's watch it again before I start playing shall we?
    Edit: after about 12 hours playing I can say I like this game a lot, all melee is cool!
    Let the beat downs begin!
    Although I keep 1 mage and archer.
    1 thing though, the camera omg, it's horrible at least 50% of the time even while moving it yourself.

    This game kinda' reminds me of a Diablo clone I used to play as a kid called Throne of Darkness, It had mainly similar mechanics, but you're limited to four characters at a time out of a total of seven (summoning and disbanding them on the fly), fairly competent AI (although it's disabled on the character the player is currently controlling), a fully fledged formation editor and a detailed levelling, magic (all classes can cast magic, in most of my playthroughs, my Swordsman had better spells than my wizard) and enchantment system.
    But it also happens to suffer from some of the shortcomings you mention in this video, the main one being teleportation an the ability to access the blacksmith and priest from anywhere in the world, and other things like tedious revive and heal times (I wish you could just pay gold to instantly revive, but then again, it only really takes five minutes to revive the whole party, so it isn't really that big of a deal).
    Okay that's enough nostalgic rambling for now.

      The only thing I ever liked about DS3 was the crypt that had all the heroes from the original game entombed in it. I don't know why but I always appreciated that bit of the game. Outside that, the biggest crime for me was that it didn't feel at all like a Dungeon Siege game.

    I'd say a lot of your complaints about the multiplayer could be answered with, "That's because it's supposed to be played with multiple human players."
    - You have control of one character because you are meant to have a bunch of other people that take up the role of the AI. You can have up to eight players, the max size of a party in single-player.
    - The map is so huge and non-linear because you are meant to have multiple players, who could choose to split off and focus their efforts elsewhere. The game also supports a competitive attitude as well as optional PVP, so it would not be a good idea to have all these opposing players forced down the same path.
    - The elevator pads were difficult to get on because you were supposed to be able to sort it out with fellow humans, who would require less to no micromanagement to squeeze on.

    • @Marcelelias11
      @Marcelelias11 3 года назад +7

      Most of these can be countered with the argument of "why not have each player control up to 8 characters?"
      Maybe there's some server/resources limitations, sure, but an 8-player lobby could have a total of 64 characters running around. That's insane to think about.

    • @brunobruno-c1d
      @brunobruno-c1d 2 года назад +1

      but the thing is, why couldnt the game let you control 8, then if someone joins, you both control 4, then if someone else joins,etc etc?
      if it had 8 players then everyone would control one, but the less players = the more you should be able to cotrol
      they could even make systems so you can let someone else control your characters instead, so you can keep using 1 while your friend uses 7, etc etc
      and thats assuming the game only allows 8 players, if more are allowed, then it should be easily possible to let each control a bigger number without cutting down as more join

    Dungeon siege to this day is one of my favorite games, and I was so pleased to hear all of my favorite points lauded in this review. No hack n slash game since has captured the same vibe that Dungeon Siege managed. No town portal, no level select, no loading screens. The world is entirely continuous and you have to walk across the whole thing. It's amazing.
    I've installed mods to try and extend the inventory of characters, or which add town portals, and they ruin the journey of the game. In Dungeon Siege you just keep moving forward, you don't teleport back to town 20 times to sell loot, and if you get more loot than you can carry, your only option is to start dropping junk, because the next town might be an hour away.

    "I'd make my whole crew dwarves if I could." That needs to be shirt. I can just imagine the confused look on people's faces as they try to figure out whether they should be offended or _just_ confused. It would be popular with gangs of little people who are prejudice against tall ones too so that would be pretty funny to see as well.

    I actually never heard of Dungeon Siege before this. It seems extremely fun, I've never really played Diablo type games and am looking to try, plus the generic fantasy setting actually doesn't bother me at all because I've been dying for high, happy, colorful and traditional fantasy stuff after the nonstop wave of gritty fantasy that's been thrown at us the past few years. I'm totally going to try this if I can get a hold of it now. Thanks, Ross c:

      +OddJars Oh I've been dying to play Baldur's Gate 2. I love old CRPGs like Fallout and Arcanum and Baldur's Gate 2 has been sitting there teasing me as an awesome RPG where I can actually roleplay for so long now. Hopefully I can pick up BG 1 and 2 soon. And Planescape Torment. And a million other RPGs I *need* to play.

    • @oddjars
      @oddjars 8 лет назад

      +Caroline J. You can pick up both Baldur's Gate 1/2 and Icewind Dale in steam for $20 a game. You can get Planescape Torment on GOG. I would suggest getting Baldur's Gate 2 because it is a lot better than 1. Planescape Torment is a pretty easy game and its world isn't as open as Baldur's Gate, but the story is absolutely amazing but it is a bit dark so you might want to put that off for now if you don't want to play a dark game. Icewind Dale is pretty good but in my opinion Baldur's Gate 2 is a bit better.

      You can check Spellforce (better to buy the whole package) Spellforce Platinum. RTS with rpg elements, where you can build your own army, level up and skill your main character. You can also WASD walk with him manually.
      Totally underrated game, but it's from the year 2006 young peoples may never heard of it.
      And buy the first game not 2, spellforce 3 is coming december 2017 maybe also worth to check it.

    Story as far as I recall: You are in fact a farmer. Descended from the 10th imperial legion, who decided to maintain some civilization formed a few smaller kingdoms in the edges of the Empire of Stars (which was collapsing because of continent spanning civil war.)
    Then some f-ing orc looking thugs began wrecking your crops, fucking around, and approaching the "find out" stage.
    There's some overarching story of some big evil influencing the weak-willed races to go absolutely berzerk using dark magic, which is why you're cutting your way through them like a 1-8 man thresher to put a stop to it before it affects the harvest. Digging up a lot of the Empire's more darker secrets and projects in the process. (Then shooting it in the head repeatedly)
