Damaging a Historic Club: The Sad Story of Benfica, Vieira, Civil War & Self-Sabotage

  • SL Benfica is one of Europe’s most historic clubs, having stopped Real Madrid’s early European Cup dominance. Things haven’t gone as smoothly lately, despite the club boasting one of the best academies in the world that churns out stars like Bernardo Silva, João Félix & Ruben Dias, and making close to €1 Billion in player sales over the last decade. Corruption from the past, allegations of such in the present, as well as allegations of voter fraud… this is Benfica in 2021: a selling club that is holding itself back.

As a Sporting supporter its strange to see a Benfica team with so much talent combined with decent veterans look so average. Portuguese teams lately have had too many issues in the board/backroom. Rivalry aside Portuguese teams need to step up and compete especially on a continental stage. Finances aren't helping anyone these days obviously but maybe its time for us to go back to the days of pushing the gritty academy players.

Gritty academy players won't make a difference if they're just being window-shopped and then sold after 12 months. The biggest issue in all of Portuguese futbol is talent retention. I think the league needs to come up with a way to curb the selling mentality of the Liga teams.

@@cdb5001 i agree if you look at Sportings sudden take over of first place after years of Benfica/Porto domination you can see that the squad is filled with young, hungry youth looking to prove their worth while Benfica and Porto field “superstars”. The issue in Portugal right now is money retention which is what is driving the sales of these promising players. Clubs have to realize that results bring financial success and a switch back to the youth format instead of viewing them as commodities can solve much of these issues at least domestically.

But I think there are underlying problems in portuguese football, some caused by the polarization of football globally and others by mismanagement of the clubs. In 2011 Porto could literally stand up to any team in world football and now we are swimming in debt. Sporting has probably the best academy in Portugal and they are even worse. There are serious structural problems in portuguese football but every fan is too busy fighting each other to see that if we stand united we could make portuguese football one of the great leagues again, but maybe its just wishful thinking. Amazingly accurate, fair and timely video.
Some very important things were left out, probably due to the duration of the video (eg. Mendes having 10% commission by default in academy players, LFV’s rigged associate number, LFV’s issues with justice, LFV’s aggression to a supporter in the club’s general assembly, lack of investment for the penta, 100M€ pre-election investment a month after statements of financial caution due to covid, lack of investment in other sports and a few more).
However, for me, the main missing piece is that the voting system used is developed and managed by the IT department of the club, which reports to DSO, LFV’s right arm (Sporting fan also with a rigged number). Furthermore, it was found out that, unlike what the club stated, the system has not been audited by the CNE since 2006!
I was there on election day, with 4-hour queues in the middle of a pandemic and a majority of supporters talking (and singing) about change. I have no doubt the election was forged.
I am sure time will put LFV in the right place. I just hope there is some Benfica left when that happens.

Him staying until now took away that meaning, and added a layer of murk. It makes some of the earlier decisions look insincere. In 4 years he goes from hero to villain basically.

Simply put, Benfica forms great players for the use of others. When a player is a finished product, as in, is ready to compete, maybe, maybe he makes 6 great months at Benfica A and then is sold.
I mean, I get that players like João Félix - after a great season - are bombarded by proposals of other big clubs, but with a little more ambition from the president and the so called 10 years ahead "structure", shouldn't we be doing much more to retain the great players for at least 1 more year? We have pictures of our president holding another club's jersey after selling a Benfica player, celebrating. His business isn't winning, is business. If we win trophies, great, if not all good - it's the same for him - that was never his priority. He uses Benfica as a shield, he doesn't serve Benfica.
Another thing worth mentioning, never in our history we invested so much as the 20/21 Season. Why is that? Why would we decide to invest 80M€ in a time like this? Every company is lowering budget, and Benfica decides to invest at a time like this? You might think it would be to form a super team, but no. It was simply to win elections, as Vieira is being very contested, and I'm not even sure if he won, because nobody counted the physical votes, among other reported "issues".
We are tired of lies and demagogy and shadiness in pretty much every area of the club.

Benfica has a lot of conditions to be one of the biggest teams in Europe. A super academy of talents, one of the biggest fanbases in Europe, a great stadium and as you said, “apparently” a good finances. Unfortunately is governed by people who don’t seem to feel the club. Nowadays Benfica seems to be a company and not a club.
In 2020 LFV as exposed himself. In the last years he was involved in a lot of justice cases, and looks like he depends on the club. The super investiment that Benfica made this season was suspect, specially because they’ve spent 10 millions in the season to attack “Penta”. The sign of JJ was also a bad for LFV reputation, because when Jesus left for Sporting he guaranteed that he would never return to SLB.
    Great video mate!👍

  • @Eainessabodega
    @Eainessabodega 3 года назад +1

    Great video as per usual,
As a Benfiquista I have the following things to add to your points:
Between 2016-2019 we lost very important figures in the dressing room: Julio Cesar, Artur Moraes, Luisão, Toto Salvio, Jonas, etc
While they might not have started every game, or absolute legends, but they were very important in the club and dressing room, specially Jonas, which is Benfica's best player between 2010-2020, seriously if we weren't able to break down a defense he would score a first time volley to break the deadlock and make others around him play even better (he basically combined with Gaitán, Lima, Mitroglou... with his eyes closed).
Not only we did not have the quality to replace some of those players we also did not have the players in the dressing room to replace their spirit and leadership. You need at least one of them (when Jonas started playing less João Félix stepped in and he was amazing) but idk having the players that when the game gets though or you get unlucky and lose a couple of matches are able to secure the manager and steer the ship is something that neither Pizzi, André Almeida and Jardel are able to do since they are different characters.
Another aspect that damaged Benfica is the rise in prices in the South American market. We used to get players like Nico Gaitán or Maxi Pereira directly from their native leagues... Now we got players like Cervi, Pedrinho, Conti or Lema. Cervi is an okay player but keeps getting descriminated by every couch for no apparent reason and then always makes a comeback but he's not Gaitán or Salvio xD, same with Pedrinho he has promisse but idk he's missing something specially for 20M.
Conti, Lema and other players that don't even make a first time appearance are usually shocking :(
Regarding what you have talked about in your video, per usual it is awesome, but I would like to make a couple of observations:
    1) BTV has indeed decreased in quality tremendously, I miss the days when in aired the Premier League, Serie A, etc and had probably the best football comentators in Portugal (you can see them now scattered around Eleven Sports and Sport TV doing, in my opinion, an amazing job). I haven't subscribed to BTV since they lost the Premier League rights but from what I see it is indeed a propaganda machine for the direction D:
    2) I think the election was probably legit. A very considerable portion of people who vote are athletes and people who work for Benfica and I can see them backing LFV a lot since he created a lot of infrastructure and investment in some areas that didn't exist previously so they have a lot appreciation for him. Still Noronha Lopes setup some ground for a future candidature to the presidency of the club!
And lastly my person opinion about Jorge Jesus appointment: I think what he did to Benfica after leaving for Sporting was unnacceptable. Ok he was hurt but he scoffed at the club, our coach at the time (Rui Vitória), players and fans. We should not have appointed him, he's a good manager, but so are many portuguese managers that could probably do a better job than what he's doing - Leonardo Jardim, Pedro Martins, Abel Ferreira that was at PAOK until 3 months ago, Ruben Amorim which we could have just signed before Sporting or gave him a better job than the U23 team without any saying in his own work... I don't see the necessity of hiring such an expensive coach that misstreated the club and always was very divisive in the fanbase...
    Thanks for the video Adrian,

That's what I mean when I say that the votes could be easily manipulated, we'll never know if Vieira actually won because Benfica is a dictatorship and the votes are hidden. I'm not saying he didn't win, but why would they hide the votes? Now we're gonna have to deal with 4 more years of this because the older fans can't let go of the past (trusting that the votes weren't manipulated). We all appreciate what he did for us in the past, but it was clearly time for a change

As a Porto fan, I enjoy watching your club struggle domestically. And let's be honest, Sporting deserve where they are this season. Everyone crapped on Varandas but he inherited a horrible situation and has actually been very astute.
On the European stage, I pull for all Portuguese clubs as it's good for Portuguese representation and our league coefficient. I was surprised that LFV went back for Jesus, but not surprised by how crap he's been this season. JJ is the Portuguese Guardiola; all hype and nothing beyond his one team (Barca for Pep, Benfica for Jesus).
People talk of his Libertadores victory but Abel just did the same thing with a much worse team. LFV has mismanaged club money and Jesus is a fraud. These are Benfica's biggest problems. On a bigger stage, the corruption of Benfica in the "e Toupeira" scandal, along of course, with Porto's own bribe scandal 13 years ago, and the way the big 3 get favourable calls over smaller teams, is a massive issue for Portuguese footy.

"he inherited a horrible situation" BS. He was involved in that situation. While the club was going nuts(before the attack on Alcochete) he was already making a campaign to become the next president. And we are still waiting for him to talk about what happened on 15/16.

Benfica fan here. Just some thougts on your comment:
Sporting has been by far the most consistent team in the league so far and fully deserve where they stand. However, I'd say that a big portion of that domestic success is due to Benfica and Porto's underperformance throughout the campaign. Not to take anything away from a wonderful managerial job by Rúben Amorim and the decent presidency of Varandas.
On Benfica, completely agreed. LFV has without a doubt done a great job at rebuilding the club but the corruption scandals and general disregard for the supporters' hopes of success and belief in a squad built around the talent generated are astonishing. He's drunk with power and I fear that Rui Costa will continue the road of mediocrity and disconnection from the fans. It's time for a different project to begin.
I also wanted to get your take on Porto's situation- the academy has produced some fantastic young players who seem to be rushed out for a quick profit. Don't you think it would be better for the financial health and european estabilishment of the club to take a couple of seasons to bed in those young players and build a side that could then be sold for far more money, even if that means sacrificing some domestic success?
Finally, hard disagree on Guardiola. His Bayern side was quite good, hindered by european drought (which is Guardiola's biggest flaw, of course), but both is Barcelona and City sides- despite the talent level and investment- play football close to perfection in my opinion. JJ is above average as a coach but certainly not at the level the portuguese media tried to put him
(Veio em inglês para os "mouros" que quisessem ler. Boa sorte com a Juve. Abraço!)

at this moment the harm Luis Filipe Vieira does to Benfica is equal as worse as Vale e Azevedo. the talented players we have in the reserves team don't get playing time, we have have prima donnas like Pizzi who are intoxicating the dressing room in the inside. we have a coach that in every press conference talks about Flamengo (his previous club) and how happy he was in there, like a guy who keeps talking all the time about is ex-girlfriend. our european perfomances in the last 10-12 years have been embarrassing to say the least, and Benfica TV is no more than a propaganda channel who insults everyone that dares to criticize the president. thank you for the fantastic work, i subscribed to your channel :)
    greetings from a Benfica supporter.
