  • Today I will be looking at the Stereo Delay effect built into the Behringer X32 effects rack. I will explain the different parameters and also how I utilize this during a live music set.
This is part of my Effects Series that I am currently working on. I will be going through all of the main effects built into the X32, how they work, and give you examples of how I would use them.
If you haven't already, make sure to check out my new website dbbaudio.com for the latest news and updates!

Great explanation. You've mentioned muting the fx's when steps up to speak. A quick tip is to assign a your fx's to a mute group for quick access.

Drew, I assigned a mute to the tap delay so I can turn it off when I need to. I like the effect you get when varying the out put from the delay, that sounds great.
Thanks for you posts, as a newbie to the x32, you have made my learning curve occur much quicker than had I not been able to watch you do these things.

I've found that using the Send to control Delay is like you said, much cleaner and better but you have to be on top of your game. I'd recommend it only if you know the song really well, but if it's a band or song you're not that familiar with then use the Return, it has a lot more margin for error, but the end result won't be as good. Sort of like Steak vs Hamburger. When they're both at the top of their game, you're not going to get better than the steak but it's way easier to screw up cooking a steak than a hamburger lol.

Hey mate, instead of manually riding the fader, you SHOULD be able to set a ducking dynamics processor sidechained to your bus in so that your delay doesn't swamp your primary vox.
Not sure if you actually ride the fader in a live set, or were just doing it for illustration.

    • @sennysoon
      @sennysoon 9 лет назад +2

Gregsound1 Not sure how to be any more specific. If you know what a sidechain on any dynamics processor does, the set up is plain as day.
It works like this; effects send bus comes in, primary vox signal is detected, ducking squashes delay signal generated.
Person/people stop singing, no more signal in effects bus, ducking releases the effects return and the delay comes through.
If it can be done on an LS9, it can be done on an X32.

Hello Drew. I am experiencing feedback on the echo channel if I have both the fx in and out at 0. This is without having any other source connected to the x32, no microphone, no pa, just listening through headphones. So I got a x32 not connected to anything other than a headset, I set up all the channels, naming them and so on, setting the echo with no channels going in to it just to prepare everything, and then after a couple of seconds the echo starts to send a feedback loop through the headset. Do you have any suggestions to what is causing this and how to avoid it?
Your videos are awesome by the way, really a lifesaver.
    Regards
    Tore

How many insert FX plugins can you have on one channel at one time?
    For example:
    Channel 1: Lead Singer
On this channel, I'd like to run the gain stage (pre-fader) through an EQ into a compressor, into a reverb.
    Channel 2: Acoustic Guitar
I'd like to run the gain stage (pre-fader) into an EQ then into a compressor.
    And so on....
How many FX plugins can I use per channel?

    Hello
Thanks for your great videos. However one thing seems still unclear for me with this delay. I miss kind of decay for the effect. With this I mean the number of times the sound repeats. "Time" sets the time between each repetition. I expected Feedback L+R to reduce the number of repetitins...but even when I pull it down to 1 or 2% it still repeats around 10 times. All "mixing" options just reduced volume, but not the number of delay repetitions. Any hint about this? Thanks a lot, br Urs

Good instructional video man! I can follow you, and you did a good job of demonstrating varying the input, vs varying the output of the effects processor. I agree with one of the other comments here that while the Behringer videos are full of information, they put me to sleep!

There's something that confuses me about the Behringer x32. I would usually use the mix buses for different monitors. Why does the mixer use some of these for effects? Let's say I have 5 musicians playing and 3 singers, and I want them all to have stereo IEMs. There are 16 outputs in the 32-channel stagebox. I'll need to use all 16 outputs. How do I do this if mix buses 13-16 are being used for effects? Can someone please explain?

Thanks Drew I do enjoy your videos. I would have thought a demo of feeding directly from the vocal channel on the channel buss send (rotary) or an SOF buss send (which also lets you us send muting instead of wrestling with the fader) would be useful as it shows how to emphasize a single channel when multiple parts are going to a shared effect. Thanks for what you do.

so far, it's pretty evenly weighted. unless you have your feeds into your fx so hot that even a smidge up would still be easily audible, you can easily just drop your fader and run it down to turn it "off"

I am running an x32 at church, and we are using a click track that the drummer is in control of. This is coming into the desk as an input (Via the s16) Is there a way to use this channel as a key input for the delay fx? (can I use this click track to set the timing on the delay fx?)

  • @TheRamsbod

Hi Drew, Thx for a great tutorial. I have followed your instructions to the T but I don't get any delay. It just seems to make the signal louder. What could I be doing wrong? I can see that there is an input signal and an output signal but no delay.

Hi Duncan, I would check to see if your FX returns are being sent into the LR Bus, also make sure that the effect is enabled in the effects rack. Also if you have a DCA that is controlling the FX send or FX return that is turned down, or muted, they will not pass any audio. Let me know if you can't get it working.

    • @TheRamsbod

Drew Brashler Found the problem the FX sends were being sent to some DCAs. Must have been something I did when I didn't know what I was doing. I do the sound at the Somerset West Baptist church in Cape Town, South Africa. Our desk arrived 3 days before our Christmas musical. I had 3 days to learn the basics. I would not have been able to do this without your tutorials. Only now have I got around to experimenting with effects. This is our first digital desk. The effects are amazing! Thanks for the great tutorials.

Thanks for your reply Behringer replied to my enqirey . it reads as follows:
Yes it can be done using midi. You can use our FCB1010 for this or any Midi pedal that can output standard MIDI CC which is configurable.
You can control faders, pans and mutes via midi, so you can use the mute switching function to mute the FX return channels.
If you want a smaller options there is also a 3rd party option:

Here is a list of all midi CC values of the X32 I compiled for easy reference:

there's little point in posting a question as no one will give an honest answer!! Typical of these videos!! I am so weary of these companies hiring technicians spewing out technical crap, making it look great so that fools like me and so many others go and purchase them!! Time and time again I've proved that digital will not sound as good as analogue! Never!! I recently purchased the x32 compact and the XR18 fir smaller vocal gigs! After spending a lot of time, effort and money testing and also hiring technicians online from Behringer, these consoles are terrible!! I recently setup an ordinary studiomaster alongside the X32 and had a sound technician familiar with the x32.... the studiomaster left the X32 in the bin!! Especially on vocals!! With all the hype going on about how great the preamps are!! An absolute disgrace!!! I stand to challenge anyone on this!!!!
