We had some peaking issues on this episode : ( Sorry!
You guys peak every time you release a video (;
i really wanna see DiceCheck get as big and popular as Critical Role.
Can I get Toby in ARMA?
what is the special primer to use for mdf, i cant figure out what im supposed to get.
You also made a mistake of trying too hard on base weights: 1 inch fender washers run you $10 for 100 as a private citizen and 2 of them will fill in a 32 mil base, and 1.25 fenders nicely fill 40 and 50 mil bases.
The biggest thing you should teach everyone is that Games Workshop considers itself a miniatures company first and game company second. Everything starts making more sense when you learn that they're not primarily trying to make a game and the medium happens to be physical miniatures, it's the other way around.
But they changed a lot in the last years. The game is better and fairer. Ofc some of the veterans whine a lot at the moment. But the most know this. I mean, remember 7th edition, it was a shit show.
Matt: I'm not cancelling the show, I'm taking over it
It's something that a Genestealer would say
They'll comeback with bigger foreheads
Assuming direct control
Sucks I like Tom and mark. Dameki is terrible to watch.
Welp...
Thanks for showing the dice bags I sent! I hope you guys get more from people soon.
What other designs do you have?
@@Donnyjohnsonbooks various legion/chapter themed bags like pre- and post-heresy thousand sons, imperial fists, ultramarines, etc. I have about a dozen faction designs finalized, and a couple in the works.
Carnifexes can be good as distraction units that look scary. They just don't work against tournament players that understand and know to ignore them. They can soak a lot of shots. Most of this is stuff that made me leave the hobby 8-10 years ago. I came back because I enjoy the modeling and painting. The competitive scene is rough and either you decide to spend thousands to adapt to each change in the meta or build an army you like and play a sub-optimized list. The level of fun in this hobby should not be dependent on number of wins but on time spent with friends. family and self-enjoyment and relaxation in modeling and painting.
Why such a wholesome comment in this section ._.
Jokes aside, you're right though
"DISTRACTION CARNIFEEEEEX!" is a completely legit reason to field a Carnifex. Also? You get to say the word "Carnifex" a lot, and that is never going to not be a perk.
I wish I knew how hard it would be to get my friends into 40k. And I wish I had friends.
This is my current issue
Just go to the local gaming store
I’ll be your friend
Brand new to the hobby and have 500points fully painted. I don’t know anyone that plays and the local store isn’t hosting games cuz rona. QQ
@@anungunrama9344 Not much going g on because of rona and not to bash TTS but It’s really not the same as playing on a real table with real models and real faces talking to you.
Morality of recasting aside, I've never had an issue of LGS taking a stance against recasts, let alone asking to weigh the models lol. Tournaments are a different beast of course, but every LGS I've ever been to has been chill about it.
Such bullshit honestly no chance in hell ANYONE is going to fucking WEIGH your model like that is some fucking bullshit lol
If your model ain’t missing an arm you can run it.
Agreed, never ever heard of anyone measuring/weighting a model. And if it was recast from the original model, they'd be the same size anyway. You usually can't tell the difference between an original and recast once painted. And half the recasters I've seen have had better QC than Forgeworld in the first place.
@@thebrandoff5450 100% correct i had 1 fw model I had to send back twice then thought why not buy a recast one and see what the quality diffrence is and the recast was better! The weighing thing wouldnt work with me (magnets and custom bases)
“You can’t use recasts at an lgs” laughs in fully 3d printed krieg army
Fucking. Sick.
May i ask for resources as to where to find good 3d stls for the various armies?
We need more of Toby. Put him in the Imp Knights army somehow
Give them custom stats and make a narrative campaign, built just for Toby.
"recasts are not allowed at your LGS"
*laughs in my local LGS*
Even at tournaments, I don't think I've actually ever seen any TO try to check for recasts. Even at big events where I would assume the greatest amount of scrutiny to not piss of GW, they just don't have the time to go weighing models.
Right? Especially if the original model was in resin. You could literally never tell
Plus you can be converting your stuff, even by the rules... And pins, and basing material... Methinks it's a bluff story.
@@Virakotxa keep in mind these guys probably haven't been to any tournaments because of Covid. Matt even mentioned in a previous video that part of the plan for the Journey to Warhammer series was to go to a tournament but they couldn't because of Covid. They were likely either told about the weighing models thing by people who have been to tournaments where they do that or people are just fucking with them and they have no way to disprove it.
Is that a US thing becouse during my 25 years of playing warhammer ive never heard of checking for recasts or anything like that. Alot of people use alternative models during tournaments to.
When I first started collecting I started with death guard and blood angels. So I bought the know no fear box. Then I sold it because I wanted orkz. Then I bought it again because I decided actually I do want death guard and blood angels. Then I sold my death guard for chaos space marines then I bought know no fear again because I changed my mind and wanted death guard again. It was tough
>It’s pretty expensive but I like how it looks
>well, I can’t let them alone so bulk it up
>you know, maybe a second army, just for fun
>that new army specific unit tho
>how can’t I afford instant noodles?
Everything’s so cool I feel compelled to buy 5 different armies
The moral here might be to stick to an army for a while before selling it on. Even if you don't like it anymore right now, who's to say how you'll feel about it six months down the line? I'd say only sell off stuff you haven't touched in a year and know for a fact you don't want anymore and are okay having to start again from scratch if you change your mind.
My tables is 2 44x30 sheets of 1/4" MDF hinged with gorilla tape. Just put it on top of my table and then lay my battle mat on top, works like a charm.
That was my first table too. It's a very easy to store behind a bookshelf option.
Dameki: I wish I had a candle that smelled like that.
They absolutely sniff glue, can't change my mind.
Use wall spackle on terrain to give it a concrete texture you can paint and dry brush. Probably would add a lot of character to that MDF terrain you have already
not doing reseach is how i ended up buying 50 genestealers in 9th edition
OOF
I ended up with them because of the Christmas box. They shoved 16 of them in there.
@@timothywillox8564 Almost as bad as the DG combat patrol box
@@anexistanthuman2435 You mean pox walkers patrol?
@@timothywillox8564 Can't even use all the models patrol
I felt like death that whole day but still had fun.
Toby really is a 1 in 1,000,000 treasure
Make's sense as the Death Guard .
1. Start off small
Me with 2500 points of models and haven’t played a game yet, “well shit”
Confession I have to say about 40k and Age of Sigmar... I own more army's than I've had games in the past 3 years.
I mean same I own a slaves to darkness and disciples of tzeentch and have played 0 games
And that's a totally fine way to enjoy the hobby! No confession required!
Same here bro...
Me, who started last summer with Indomitus and went on to buy a Thousand Sons Start Collecting Box and is planning to get a Knight and some Custodes and has yet to play a single game:
oh no
Bought that Sisters limited edition some time after they were first released because WOOOOOO SISTERS FUCK YEAH. Built up and started some AOS/marines/etc.....
Pandemic hit right after. Haven't seen any of my boiz in a long time. Haven't played in a long time. Just boot up Dawn of War Apocalypse and pretend the tyranids kicking my dick are my nid buddies while I cry into a beer c:
“Do your research first and see if you can play it”
Me who did no research and was told by a friend that orks are like gambling and i have yet to play the game after 3 years: “oh. Ooh nuoo”
Behind the scenes: Matt was outed as a bug boi, confronted by viking boi(tom) and ork's husband boi(mark) , and ate them.
sounds like the beginning of a fanfic
"First thing is don't buy 2000 points"
Slowly looks over to three different full armies, still in their boxes.
*Jots down* Don't...buy...2000...points.
"Don't, buy, 2000, points... Again..."
I didn't buy 2k points but I did buy 5k points. So technically I did what they said
Matt: "Hey Tom & Mark, don't worry about me canceling the Hobby Talk show. I love it."
Tom & Mark: "Oh thank God! We love hosting and doing it!"
Matt: "Yeah... about that... You're both FIRED from being the hosts of it."
Tom & Mark: "Fuck!!!"
Matt: "Oh and I'll be the new host!"
Tom & Mark: "Double Fuck!!! This is worse than being cancelled!!!"
But all joking aside, I hope that you all are doing well and sorry about the scheduling conflicts.
I wouldn’t be surprised if thats actually what happened. Dameki and Matt seem like only they can be the popular ones. They both get butt hurt when they loose.
They were the Two in the ork vs space wolves final with the amazing result ?
@@mariusevander2214 - If you're talking about the Tournament Finale... it was Jon P., playing Space Wolves and Mark, playing Orks!
@@Winterydee thankyou , got Tom and Jon confused lmao
@@mariusevander2214 - lol! That's funny! One is a short Asian man with glasses and the other is a big white guy with a beard! But I guess all of us nerds and game geeks just look the same! ;P
But for real everyone mixes people's names all the time! I know that it happens to me pretty often!
While agree with some of the points here the idea that some units are "unplayable" is more telling about the style of play you prefer, which is clearly more on the competitive side. A carnifex or a stormsurge isnt a great unit in a competitive enviroment but competitive games arent the only way people play these games.
I’ll get three Deff dreads, double blitza-bomma and 9 killa kans with full Burna Boyz seasoning and ten Gretchin
I agree, but some units actually make your army much worse and so won't be fun to play with... as a tau player the stormsurge would take up half my army and would not be pull its weight against my friend.
Big confession, I buy and paint whole 2k armies before ever putting them on a table.
So you're telling me not to use just a stompa and two gargant squiggs for my starter army?
Nervously looks at his recently bought stompa, he cute tho
@@alb1n0burrit0 Stompa did well in tournaments 12 days ago
How dare Tom and Mark have other priorities over their hobby.
I wish I would've known more about the gameplay because I loved building a Tau army but I have more fun playing assault lists. Tau are cool but you live in 2 phases. Id rather fail a charge then blast 3 units off the table without moving my models.
to be fair: You only need to stay on top of all rules and books if you want to stay competitive. If you want to just play the army and use the models you like, like the sporocyst, you only need the codex. It's how we play in our group and there's a lot less streß and anger over new books being released monthly.
Unless you're playing at a competitive level, I still think you should only buy stuff that's cool to you. You'll almost certainly end up spending more time building, painting and (sometimes) converting your army than you'll have them on the tabletop. That on its own should guide your army choice.
I’m 2000 points deep into my orks army.
Perfect time to watch this
Always go by the rule of cool! Rules change, but a cool model is forever cool- regardless of rules. I'd rather field a bad army full of awesome models than an effective army of garbage models every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
I'd love to have this show on spotify
Same dude
Pingpong tables is a really useful tip! Thanks! I live on an island, meaning I already have issues getting a game mat shipped!
For my carrying case I cut the foam into small cubes. Then when I put models in it I Bury them a little and with the added mass of the models it should overflow but closing the case adds enough pressure to keep the models in place without damaging them. And while it can end up throwing foam around a little and you have to dig the models out, the models are easily removed without issue or damage. It's an extra step but well worth it to me. Not to mention it makes the case universal. I don't need entire new foam blocks if I want to bring knights instead of nids, or wolves, or necrons... I have 4 armies.
Also! If you have a big carry case like me, get a smaller box just for small infantry (like gaunts) and keep them in that inside the main box to keep them all together
"On the next episode we can do Bricky's sisters".
That's some quality phrasing.
Back in 5th when I started playing, the table size was like 4'x6' so I bought two 2'x6' doors (w/o the doorknob hole) and put hinges on them. Put velcro on the underside and got a felt cover so we weren't on bare wood then laid that over top of a regular table. Worked great. I stopped playing years ago and got back into the hobby recently so I haven't played on it in several years (only played 9th on TTS) but it should still work fine, I'll probably get a mat to define the playable area and then have the excess table space for models, books, etc. during games.
Something I wish i would've known is how the same model can essentially be a different unit with the smallest change lol. That really messed me up with grey knights. Big reason I switched to tyranids models are so easy to tell apart
Nothing a little paint can’t fix
I don't like when channels say "don't buy whatever you want and study how to be competitive" if you wanna play you still can get whatever looks cool and satisfies you, you can play open play and face 3 hellbrutes with 60 space marines if you want... And eventually you will find people who plays in your "style" and m what you find enjoying. Also meta changes, and if you buy 18 tyranid warriors, maybe by the time you are painting the 4th one, a new codex come out where tyranid warriors are awful... You never know, so buy the army you wanna play regardless of the meta and find opponents that make the games interesting...
We're not saying be competitive, we're saying to be responsible and figure out what you can actually play/what works out for you. If you just start buying models without reading your codex and don't have a game plan outside of a start collecting box you'll end up with a large pile of shame. Yeah you can literally buy everything in the army and become future proof, but if you're starting in the hobby the last thing you'd want is to end up with a pile of models you're don't want to use and/or can't use.
I bought a toxicrene because I thought it looked cool and it's rules sounded fun. He's not painted because I learned that I can't even move him through most terrain layouts because the model won't fit from the way that he's built. Sporocyst I can only field outside of 3" from any piece of terrain from fortification changes. That's already $140 that I could have spent on something else instead of those models if I had just took the time and researched what models are okay to play.
@@DiceCheck Okey, those examples really make your point, but carnifexes are so cool!!! I'm not saying you have to use them. It's ok if you don't enjoy them but that doesn't mean someone starting in the hobby can't enjoy them in a cheese game, same goes to the stormsurge.
Great job BTW! I love what you all are making!!! Keep it up ❤️❤️❤️
I’m now about 2500 points of orks that I haven’t fielded yet, 3k of sisters which I love, and now I’m building a deathwatch army, and I’ve been playing for only a month
2 of those grey plastic topped fold-able tables work great as well and are even cheaper. I laughed so hard because I got into warhammer about 8 years ago when I moved into an apartment with 2 buddies. They had a ping-pong table in the main living area. It usually stayed folded in half most of the time but like you said, even half is big enough for a game. If we had a few friends over and wanted to do a 3v3 or 4v4 we would shuffle other furniture around to unfold it.
I wish I had looked into more strats on different play styles cause I locked myself into one and realized that the units I had were useless for other ways to play. I love gun line but it’s just not very good right now.
Ah, youtube commenter. Snooping as usual, I see
Another good option for basing models is to use slate and other heavy basing materials to make the base weightier
It’s funny as old guard one of the complaints is there is “less” kit bashing. Older armies tended to be more unique.
Tom & Mark are my favourite two, I'm gonna miss those guys
Matt, GamePlus foam is designed to allow you to make the shape you need by pulling out the individual foam squares. They're like, 10 bucks per tray for a customizable foam container.
Some hardware stores offer cutting service for wood sheets. Those are normally 24" wide. Get 2 foldable sets of legs and you have a gaming table for ~30 bucks thats easy to store and transport.
i hope everything is ok for the boys. hopefully it was nothing bad. i learned who they were via this channel and i want more of their content D:
Same bro I was only watching because of those two guys
Thank you I have honestly never heard of Troll trader before will be looking into this!.
Not doing my research ended up with 2k points of chaos space marines which I didn't enjoy at all, should have just listened to Bricky etc an get the army I enjoyed the most estatically
Big Fan of Tyranids now!!
Oh no! They got canceled!😱
I actually was able to build a box by putting washers on the bottom of my models and magnetic tape in my box I also put a leather pocket screwed into the top of my box for my codex. Took me only 20 or 30 bucks to do. Highly recommend.
@26:55 An easy way to add dimension to MDF terrain is to print out "posters" and put them on the wall. You can find plenty of images online of 40k propaganda style posters, just shrink them down and print them out on a normal color printer. You can cut them out, then use a gluestick to stick it to the blank wall. if it needs to be more durable, you can go over it with matte mod-podge. This works for any terrain, but works best on flat surfaces like the kind that MDF has
Krylon textured paint for the mdf buildings makes it look like stone.
Man, kind of bummed. I hope we don't lose Tom and Mark. That being said Matt and Dameki did a stellar job though. The show is definitely in good hands.
Here's another tip FLGS = Friendly Local Gaming Store. Almost every FLGS gives 10% off anything you order from GW. So for real, shop at or ask your FLGS to order it for you. It is typically free and saves you money AND it helps support the brick and mortar stores that support our hobby and have been dealing with difficult conditions now.
I feel you on ebay and frontline gaming I mostly use them when my local hobby shop doesn't have the model I'm looking for. However it was the only place I managed to find the infamous brother craig.
so glad you told me about troll trader, the prices are amazing and shipping isn't too bad either. I could now start a 2000 point army from nothing for a fraction of the cost and most of the time I can skip right to being able to play.
Ping-pong table shit that is awesome. I needed 2. Perfect 👍👍
I would be careful about bringing up recasting. It brings out a lot of Dunning Krugers that just fuck with everyone. Just about every single thing that people try to use to say you can spot recasts are lies, half truths or just false info. Everything from weight to mould lines to the smell. And considering how up and down the quality of FW products can be, weight and even shape varies (warping really common in FW stuff). The only thing you could use as a guarantee is if someone has an old ass OOP model that was only cast in metal, in resin. But other than those super mega niche cases, it's more or less a guessing game.
Also unless your army is totally FW like if you went Elysian or Death Korp, or uses a ton of FW parts like Leman Russ variants, you're never going to have someone even consider you might have recasts. The 'no recasts' thing usually only applies to idiots talking about their stuff knowingly being recasts and telling other people where to get them, you're almost never going to have someone accusing you or weighing random models in your army (as if you couldn't just use magnets or weighted basing materials on your bases to make any kind of standardized 'your plastic guy should only weigh this much but weighs this much' meaningless). And making people afraid that they're buying recasts just exacerbates the problem, because then they read up all the misinformation out there and accuse other people of having recasts for stuff like double mould lines or being just a bad cast but it must be a recast because it looks shit.
As for another point for newer player's and the point of "buying 2k point's army" they may try Kill Team. Kinda hope it gets covered here in some way. You go get a 100-200 point models and you can play. Furthermore, most models can be used effectively in the 40k later. It's quite approachable as well considering that for example you can get the grey knights strike squad, equip 5 of them and... well that's all you need for models.
Thanks for the heads up on Crystal fortress. I have a major move coming up when I get out of the service. I am building a ton of models right now and have been worrying about how to safely move the across the country.
As a new ork player, doing research helped me out GREATLY.
Uh.. like I love you guys, but damn this episode is.. 'yeah we made a mistake by buying what we liked the looks of, now we take part in tournaments and it's garbage, so definitely research what is competitive at a given moment or else you can't play the game', 'be prepared to customize your units, because not all options are in the boxes', 'everything is so expensive, definitely buy only second hand', you need to buy thirty books to know what's going on'... like lads.. I came into this thinking it would be 'oh I did some silly mistake, I wish I did this' but this video's message basically is 'yeah, I tried to have fun but this hobby has so many flaws and intricacies at every step lol why would anyone do this?'
Probably just how I personally view it and the video is still enjoyable of course (background music would make it better though), but it just sounds very much like what you wish you knew before starting is that the hobby sucks, as that's kind of what each bullet point led to. Kinda discourages people, especially the fact that you really don't offer good solutions to many problems. In videos like a year before back on Matt's channel he for example says how some things are kinda tough to get into, but there's Wahapedia, Battlescribe, Warcom etc.. kind of what I'm missing from this.
But again, the video is still fun to watch and I can definitely relate to some of your points. Happy wargaming!
When’s the next tournament? I loved the last one!
Funny enough. I have to both cases. Magnets for necrons and foam for transports
For protection during transport and carrying, you could use bubblewrap.
The amount of time I superglued the wrong gun onto a dreadnought or gave my battle suits two left arms is honestly staggering
You know you are new at painting when you say "I can't dry brush this - how do you paint it then???" ouff
My mum got a "banana scented candle" once that smelled like citadel plastic glue
Funny seeing them talking about the selfie point markers like they’re considering not doing it.
On the buying front it'll depend what your looking to do as I collect Guard and 30k White Scars so getting all the options is my goal rather Han what is most effective options.
While my 40k Primaris forces I've bought is upto about 150 minis and 21 of those is outriders to convert option's as I want to run an all bike White Scars force which isn't an option at current but every 6 months when points and rules change I'll have the options available to run right away. 😇
I started SOB just because I liked the celestine model. Now I comitted to the P&P box.
Seriously Dameki, army showcase. Tau and Deathguard.
don't you worry. It's coming!
@@JoeNathanYa hell yeah!
I wish I knew that the dude I went halves in the Indomitus box with would still have not painted a single mini almost a year later.
I feel you... Same here.
When i started, i planned on playing khorne demons even though they are seen as the weakest demon faction. For me im fine collecting one of each kind of hq or unique units as well as army building. I also just love puting them together and painting either way.
Kinda started the same way you guys did buy Know No Fear and the equivalent of two Dark Imperium. After my experience with DI, I got caught in that the box set is out gotta get it before it’s gone. That’s were it all went down hill needless to say the pile of opportunity is pretty good (592 models in total). I’ve vowed to not buy anything else until my Necron army is done, that’s after I finish my current project Death Guard and Ultramarines are finished.
I am now a fan of Hobby Talk, now I must watch the other episodes
I am a simple man, I see Dice Check and I watch and upvote. Often even comment.
I have 11 start collectings which started me off and it was a pretty big mistake. Still trying to dig myself out of it by focusing my energy onto the ones I like
I mean, each different or multiple of the same?
@@eneaceribelli8023 each of different armies over the period of about 1 year and maybe a few extra units.
Running tau even though everyone said they suck
When you've got John P over you should also talk about fragile models. I know he's got an Ad-Mech Army I don't think I have a single model that I haven't snapped off an antenna or a mechadendrite or a Servo skull while building them nevermind storing or moving them.
wish I knew about magnetizing minis tbh. Logical part of my brain says there's nothing wrong with proxying something aslong as all players ok it. smooth part of my brain with ocd screams "that's not a multimelta! REEEEE! whydidnt I give it multimelta REEEE!"
@36:27 MagickarpUsedFly has pleased Slaanesh
I miss the other guys :'(
Toby is a realy fun thing. Like obviously you cant actualy run it in a tournament. But building that thing must have taken a LOT of time for the guy, and paint it even. Like id want to build something like that myself :D
10 minutes in and my trepidation to get back into this game is only growing
Wish somone had told me not to put really strong magnets on small bases. Brings a whole new meaning to necron warrior blob...
I feel if you kitbash a carnifex with a bio-cannon you can use it as either a exocrene or some biovores.
Scalecoat probond, thats my favorite plastic weld for my models.
I have never seen anyone have their models weighed to check for recasting. That's like I hear people talk about drilling in to forgeworld models to see if they are "real" Anyone that hard out to get someone needs a hobby...well a new one.
Mat! You need to play your Carnifexs vanilla! No upgrades just pure raw hunger on the table, and they will eat stuff up!
I strongly suggest talking about Bricky's sisters... Oh you mean his models.. never mind then
Ork player, bought a start collecting box to, well, start. Bought a warboss w/ nobz box, and just a regular nob box because I didn't realize they sucked, and that they came with the warboss lol.
For glue, may I suggest trying out RapidFix. Best you can get.
My main issue is buying a lot all at once. I have like $900 of orks, got them over like 4 months, and not my normal group doesn’t care about 40K and I don’t really like orks now
I think I'm gonna try to adapt: super glue to bases; metal/magnetize to containers; and I'm pretty banged up and delirious after my overtime (cannot finish my thoughts). So now i'm blurting random shit out. Probs shouldn't post this hot garbage but my dice-check brothers need more power. Love youse bros!!!! I'm going to bed 💚💚
The most *important* rule of all:
_THIN_
_YOUR_
_PAINTS_
"CREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!" Babadon upon seeing Tobi
That whole idea of "don't play something if it's not good" is stupid, some people just play for fun not winning.
Like I'm planning on buying and playing reivers cos I want to try everything. I want to figure out my way of playing, I don't want people telling me what to play.
