Hey Gungnir, I suggest throwing your chlorophyte armor into the Shimmer and using the bars to craft offensive Beetle armor! I know you said you didn't want to go the beetle route this playthrough, but it synergizes very well with the Terra Blade due to huge bonuses in melee speed and damage- moreso than the Shinobi Infiltrator armor.
Quick tip: A good strategy to use is to get hits in with the horseman's blade, dip when your health gets too low, and then wail on the enemy you hit with a projectile sword like the terra blade or christmas tree sword. Since the pumpkin projectiles are relatively slow, by the time they get to the enemy you're hitting, you'd also be getting extra DPS with your projectile sword.

I love the flying dragon. To my knowledge, it’s the only fully penetrating melee weapon before the solar eruption. Oh, I guess there’s the death sickle, but it has such a short range. The flying dragon does not benefit from melee speed increases, so menacing gives a much higher DPS with that weapon.
I've been using the Flying Dragon in hardmode and it easily outclasses the Terra Blade, and completely melting all bosses pre-moonlord. I think people are underestimating the second-highest raw damage sword in Terraria (at 180 compared to Meowmere's 200.) I'm using it with a full melee damage setup, and just checked it in-game, it does indeed benefit from melee speed increases. After using it against bosses compared to True Night's Edge, True Excalibur, and the Terra Blade, they all take longer to kill.
Not sure if it was your fault they nerfed the Terra Blade. People had seen the machine gun Terra blade before, but they only nerfed it after you posted your video. Coincidence? Probably. They need to make the flying dragon stronger at this point. The Terra blade is easier to get and completely outclasses it now.
They need to buff almost everything you get from the Old One's army. Even the highest tier armors are only side-grades to chlorophyte, and they're post-plantera.
I usually never do the event, because it just feels like everything you get from it is subpar, or you can get the same-ish result with other, easier obtainable weaponry/armor.

Yeah Menacing it's better, the problem with melee speed it's that for most melee weapons it makes them swing faster, not shoot their projectile faster, that's why the Terrablade it's so good, cause the projectiles shoots every swing, with that said, if you had more menacing accessories, the Flying Dragon would have a similar DPS (Also I think the projectile travels to more distance than the Terrablade) but the Terrablade would still hit more consistently cause that thing it's massive. Also Gungnir PLEASE get the Master Ninja Gear, that way you have the Brain & Shield of Cthulhu in one slot, and with the extra slot there you place the Frozen Shield, you're gonna have an easier time farming for it since both the Turtle Shell and Frozen Shell in 1.4.4 had their drop rates increased.
Shinobi armor is good, but don't use the full set. The set bonus is useless (to melee), so mixing armor is actually viable here. I recommend hallowed helmet (gives you 10% more melee speed and 14 more defense), and you can swap out the legs for Valhalla (6 more defense, same damage). You can also swap the shinobi breastplate for monk, which trades melee speed for melee damage, but I think melee speed is probably better with Terra blade anyway, but it's an option. If you don't care about melee speed, then you can also swap the helmet for chlorophyte. I think beetle armor (scale mail) has an additional 30% melee speed that still makes it better than mixed sets, but it's not great for damage boosts, so I'm not sure.
I find that generally lucky is the best reforge for accessories most of the time, the only exceptions are when you have a weapon with an already high base crit chance (like the sniper rifle) or if you're using equipment which grants you a high crit chance buff you want to keep crit and damage as close as possible for the maximum boost (violent is not nearly as good as either because it rounds down on all calculations)
Menacing, Violent, and Lucky are all equally powerful for weapons that get the full benefit of Melee speed. The exceptions are yoyos (which gain range alongside velocity), Sky Dragon's Fury lighting orbs (It does shoot more often but the lightning areas deal same DPS), and any melee weapons that just don't use melee speed.
I'm not sure why everyone's so hyped about Berserker Gloves. 8 extra defense, sure, but they don't give 12% melee damage like Mechanical and Fire Gauntlet, only the speed and knockback. Especially with the nerfed Terra Blade, it doesn't seem worth it.
the monk's bushy brow bald cap would be better if you're trying to minmax melee speed. for overall stats though, the hallowed mask would probably also make a lot of sense. there's no real reason to use the full shinobi set, as the set bonus only affects certain sentries the shinobi armor on its own is worse than beetle armor with the scale mail
Flying Dragon has a pierce limit on their projectile unlike Terra Blade exchange for higher base damage. Although it's hindered by projectile size and speed as well as the size of the sword and shooting speed(?) too, so.

3:14 I stole your question and made a video out of it because it seemed fun, I tested general Menacing, Violent, and Lucky Melee Accessory sets with the Terra Blade as well as a modified Violent set using as many of the feral claw items as I could for maximum attack speed. @@aldeenithegreat Also depends on weapon too. With Sniper RIfle and its 29% base crit, reaching to what you said is where I'd stop and just go for Menacing
Why would they nerf attack speed on terra blade? Doesnt stacking attack damage give you the same buff? It seems weird to nerf one without nerfing the other.
you should try out hybrid armor sets! the shinobi set bonus isn't useful for melee, so try mixing some other armor pieces that work better for melee, like the chlorophyte helmet!
Man, Flying Dragon was always slept on due to it being an Old One's Army drop, but it's always been a significantly powerful melee weapon. The reworked Terra Blade does mostly outstrip it, though, but the Flying Dragon does have ground piercing abilities, making it solid for underground exploration (probably even better than the Terra Blade in the dungeon). The only real downside about FD's energy projectile versus TB's is that FD's energy wave has a limit on how many enemies it can hit (5), while TB's has no limit. Still a very powerful melee weapon you can easily use through end game.
I actually think it might be a better projectile since sure it only hits 5 but the big difference is that everytime the Terra pierces it loses a huge chunk of damage while Flying only does so (As far as I can tell) if the projectile goes through a block
Meele speed is a wacky stat, i tried it out myself what it changes and stuff, and i'd love you to see what the Meele speed does to Shortswords, specifically The Ruler
You probably want a mix of both Menacing and Violent for Terra Blade. They're different types of bonuses, so the bonuses are multiplicative instead of additive. For instance, 10% melee speed and 10% damage is a 21% DPS increase, not 20%. But since melee armor usually comes with more raw damage than melee speed, you'd lean towards more melee speed.
that's not really how you go about calculating these things. the question here is, is 1% more damage of higher value than 1% more melee speed in terms of total dps? to find this out, it's required to do some serious math and testing. one thing you need to consider for example is whether additional projectiles fired due to increased speed make up for overall higher projectile damage that you would get by using menacing. mixing definitely is the worst thing you can do, you always stack the most effective stat.
Beetle Armor with the damage focused chestplate is actually better than the Shinobi Armor because of the buff that the set bonus grants while you are hitting enemies. Edit: Forgot to mention Beetle Armor also has slightly higher defense than Shinobi Armor
mathematically speaking, mixing menacing and violent 50/50 is by far the most efficient way to increase your dps. unless of course, the 4% melee speed increase violent is supposed to give is actually not 4% but some different value, in which case you'd need to know exactly by how much it increases melee speed to determine which combination is best, though it is most certainly a combination of the two that would be best.
I'd like to see some actual number crunching on this statement because it just seems beyond false. stacking the most effective stat (unless you are hitting a cap of some sort) always has proven to be the best dps increase, in literally any game ever.
@@happysquirtle466 let's say you had 6 accessory slots (you can have more, but the amount shouldn't matter). each one can give 4% damage, or 4% speed. if you went damage for all 6, you'd get a total dps increase of 1.24x. if you went speed it would be the same thing. if you, however, went half speed and half damage, it would be 1.12 times 1.12, which is 1.2544. if you want an example of this, lets make up a weapon that has an attack speed of two hits per second, and 100 damage. that would give it 200dps by default. with only damage buffs, it'd deal 124 damage per hit, or 248dps. with only speed buffs, it'd attack 2.48 times per second, giving it the same 248 dps. if you mixed both stats though, it'd attack 2.24x per second and deal 112 damage, which gives 250.88dps. that's only 2.88 dps higher, but it *is* an increase, and this applies in all cases regardless of weapon damage or attack speed. is that enough number crunching for you?
I wish there was more reason to get the betsy sword ngl I love the weapon but having to do the old ones army was always a chore, and now with the new terrablade projectile i feel like the flying dragon is just too weak to bother getting
the hexxed branch is my favourite movement option in the game; hexxed branch + bundle of balloons is a lot more fun than wings and boots or dash + apple or the gelatinous pillion imo; its a shame its so late in the game though
im assuming the best combination of accessory prefixes is spreading out stats, maybe one atk speed, one crit, one, damage, etc. (1.04)^6 = 1.265 > 1.24 def needs testing tho cuz discrete values can act wacky
not true. you calculation is based on the assumption that all prefixes are of equal value, so 1% damage = 1% melee speed = 1% crit chance. however, that is actually the question that he was indirectly asking, because I'm pretty sure every stat weighs a lot differently.
I will throw my metaphorical hat in to say damage reforges will always be superior over melee speed just due to how defense works in terraria. Depending on the hardmode boss you lose out from 10 (first form twins) all the way to 70 (moon lord core) damage per hit. In master mode every hit you lose damage equal to the bosses entire defense value meaning less but harder hitting attacks will effectively do alot more damage to enemies (and the fact every fun melee weapon seems to get melee speed less boosts doesn't help its case either). You lose out on knockbacks sure but when it comes to most events or bosses they will either have knockback immunities or just be killed off before you even get into range (not to mention flight and other tools to avoid enemies altogether). Also I only bring up hardmode in this due to the fact specializing into a class that hard doesn't really occur until maybe WoF when it actually may be needed for a veteran player to do some real prep work due to the dps check nature the boss presents.
I FOUND SOMETHING ABOUT THE ZENITH. Ok, so, I was seeing the max melee speed possible, and tested it out with some different weapons, and noticed with the zenith, without any melee speed bonus, it shows the different swords used to make it, but with the max melee speed, IT ONLY SHOWS THE ZENITH SWORD.
as much as i dont like nerfs its seems fine to me, what bothers me more is the terra blade pretty much carried me all the way to the moon lord from plantera. made everything in between feel pointless
the melee speed make the terra blade better because its projectiles per swing, if you had gone for a melee damage build the dragon would probably outclass it
I think it was completely fair for them to nerf the weapon in this way. While it was fun, the weapon did also trivialize most of the game post Plantera, which made checking out other weapons almost pointless. The weapon on its own was fair enough in terms of power, especially for a weapon that requires a good amount of grinding throughout the game to acquire. By nerfing how much it can be buffed up in a specific stat rather than nerfing the weapon as a whole, it keeps the Terrablade strong while also making for a less strict meta.
Was it ever even better to fully invest in melee speed instead of maximizing damage percentage and crit chance tho? The melee speed stat always felt like a gimmic to me before due to how many things just aren't at all affected. Imo it was nice to have this one weapon it was busted strong on.
@@tank1503 You could say that about a lot of weapons pre 1.4.4 in general. Just because you don't have to use an item doesn't mean it isn't good to try and polish or balance it.

About sticking to a class, it'd be kinda fun to do a run so hard that you feel an incentive to pick the absolute best counters (to your liking) offered by the various classes. I really love the toolbelt aspect in games like Terraria, and Terraria does it excellently. Whether you're going wide and choosing counters, maybe pick up a summoner set for comfy mining etc., or you're sticking to your guns and have a unique run with strong points and weak points, this is something the game really succeeds at.
its not a nerf, its a buff, before the aoe was small and hard to hit with, now you can easily hit bosses and such, and its other stats are are more useful for aoe got a buff, AND the sword and projectiles give different I-frames, so both can hit at the same time now.
I'll be honest, I don't see reason for the horseman's blade to have the visual effect or to remove the statue spawns. Yes it was extremely powerful with the setup but nobody really used it unless it was jokingly. It's an option at the end of the day and goes against the same decision made with hoiks back in the day. Now those shenanigans don't exist and it's just a bit sad to see, despite being fully within the control of the player on whether or not to exploit that factor.
Tip that you may already know, but you can dash and then immediately go into your mount and you’ll start at max speed Edit: you might be already using this in the video and im stupid lol
I know right? if anything, they should nerf zenith or at least compensate other classes for it. 3:18 - 3:30 Lucky modifier is better than menacing apparently but its depends on the weapon you using. If you use a weapon that is fast you should go for violent but if its slow then go for Lucky
Lucky is only good to a certain extent, after you get to around ~85% crit chance there’s not really a reason to keep maxing it. After that Menacing or Violent is probably better (that goes for almost all classes btw)
the other way around. lucky for fast weapons
@@aldeenithegreat Also depends on weapon too. With Sniper RIfle and its 29% base crit, reaching to what you said is where I'd stop and just go for Menacing
@@aldeenithegreat ik but summoner doesn't have crit chance anyway but i think warding is better for ml cause its on master
its so refreshing to watch a gungnir video when his game isnt fuckin wacko
Since Shinobi Infiltrator's set bonus is useless, you should wear the chlorophyte helmet instead of the shinobi mask
Try getting the flying dragon sword. The projectile is big and it does huge base damage! It goes through blocks aswell. Love your content Gungnir!🤙
Oh wait nvm I hadn't watched the full video yet!
Use monk headgear for more speed, the set bonus doesn't affect ur melee at all, and u could change leggings for more melee speed as well
Beetle Armor with the damage focused chestplate is actually better than the Shinobi Armor because of the buff that the set bonus grants while you are hitting enemies.
Edit: Forgot to mention Beetle Armor also has slightly higher defense than Shinobi Armor
You missed a sick melee weapon from betsy
Always waiting for new video after doing my school works😂😂
mathematically speaking, mixing menacing and violent 50/50 is by far the most efficient way to increase your dps. unless of course, the 4% melee speed increase violent is supposed to give is actually not 4% but some different value, in which case you'd need to know exactly by how much it increases melee speed to determine which combination is best, though it is most certainly a combination of the two that would be best.
@@Deltexterity you just blew my mind 🤯
I wish there was more reason to get the betsy sword ngl
I love the weapon but having to do the old ones army was always a chore, and now with the new terrablade projectile i feel like the flying dragon is just too weak to bother getting
May I ask what is that above your head? some kind of summoner gear?
Flying dragon blade drop from Betsy is pretty good.
Why do you have the king slime accessory in your vanity?
the hexxed branch is my favourite movement option in the game; hexxed branch + bundle of balloons is a lot more fun than wings and boots or dash + apple or the gelatinous pillion imo; its a shame its so late in the game though
im assuming the best combination of accessory prefixes is spreading out stats, maybe one atk speed, one crit, one, damage, etc.
(1.04)^6 = 1.265 > 1.24
def needs testing tho cuz discrete values can act wacky
not true. you calculation is based on the assumption that all prefixes are of equal value, so 1% damage = 1% melee speed = 1% crit chance. however, that is actually the question that he was indirectly asking, because I'm pretty sure every stat weighs a lot differently.
If you set your Terrablade to light, then you'll just shoot a death ray...
I lov using Orichalum set bcuz when i hit a enemy a beam comes to support me with more dmg makes me feel like true melee effects
Gungir, if you see this, please make a video on this
Also, melee speed is way better for the terrablade
as much as i dont like nerfs its seems fine to me, what bothers me more is the terra blade pretty much carried me all the way to the moon lord from plantera. made everything in between feel pointless
I mean, you don’t HAVE to use it 🤷♂️ yeah it’s really really nice and it will carry you but no one is forcing you to use it lol
@@orlandoservin5492 he's talking about how easy it is to get and the power spike post-plantera.
So I was doing so math and wouldn’t it be better for a boss if you ran crit perks and equipment on the terra blade then Mele speed?
I haven’t watched yet but it’s actually kind of a buff if u use it with a melee speed build
nerf or up melee is actually fun to play now tbh
the melee speed make the terra blade better because its projectiles per swing, if you had gone for a melee damage build the dragon would probably outclass it
i liked the terra blade before the rework so much more honestly kinda sad about it
You could get clinger staff just for this event it's BROKEN.
(Edit) Just noticed you said you wouldn't use it...
By nerfing how much it can be buffed up in a specific stat rather than nerfing the weapon as a whole, it keeps the Terrablade strong while also making for a less strict meta.
mf its a single player game just dont use it
Was it ever even better to fully invest in melee speed instead of maximizing damage percentage and crit chance tho? The melee speed stat always felt like a gimmic to me before due to how many things just aren't at all affected. Imo it was nice to have this one weapon it was busted strong on.
@@tank1503 You could say that about a lot of weapons pre 1.4.4 in general. Just because you don't have to use an item doesn't mean it isn't good to try and polish or balance it.
@@adamlindstrom5750 Melee speed is more important than it looks, especially for non-sword weapons. Its not like the change killed the Terrablade, either.
@@jimboanimations4041 ok but they made it worse for no reason. if it was too good just dont use it you care about that. nerfing it forces people to not use it which is stupid
Terraria devs seeing people having fun using a modifier other than menacing or lucky and, instead of letting people actually experiment and have fun with it, immediately jump to nerf both it and the odd combinations of accessories needed to actually utilise it
Which is why I forever will never play regular terraria and stick with Tmodloader so I can unnerf their stupid crap whenever the time comes.
iirc the monk cap has the same melee speed bonus of the shinobi chest
I recommend not saying 'I will see you guys when I get this event finished' I'd rather it be just a cut, I love your videos btw, kinda addicted.
You can get Christmas tree sword. Its is insane against duke fishron
Melee speed def is better for mobing. For straight up dps, a balance of crit and dmg% is the answer.
that is assuming crit and dmg are of equal value, which they actually aren't.
Omfg it's been less than a minute since this was posted hehe
whats the reason for not upgrading to beetle armor?
About sticking to a class, it'd be kinda fun to do a run so hard that you feel an incentive to pick the absolute best counters (to your liking) offered by the various classes. I really love the toolbelt aspect in games like Terraria, and Terraria does it excellently.
Whether you're going wide and choosing counters, maybe pick up a summoner set for comfy mining etc., or you're sticking to your guns and have a unique run with strong points and weak points, this is something the game really succeeds at.
Menacing is stronger than both melee and crit in raw damage from my testing.
The flying dragon is better, but you have to go full menacing
THE TERRANERF
nerfed already???? im still at true night's edge i didnt get to terra blade in time 😭😭
So sad to see that they gutted the terrablade
I’m kinda mad about my world gen bc I have explore like the entire jungle and no bee hive and the hallow is not even on the surface
will you get the zenith when you beat the game
Nice videos! keep up the good work :)
New Terra blade shoots faster, pierces more and has a bigger projectile that doesn't go through walls.... at the cost of its damage.
its not a nerf, its a buff, before the aoe was small and hard to hit with, now you can easily hit bosses and such, and its other stats are are more useful for aoe got a buff, AND the sword and projectiles give different I-frames, so both can hit at the same time now.
They also changed how mana regen works it now regens when moving faster than it did before
Tip that you may already know, but you can dash and then immediately go into your mount and you’ll start at max speed
Edit: you might be already using this in the video and im stupid lol
I would have used flying dragon for Betsy's curse then used terra
How is your screen so wide?
I love the terra blade carried me all the way to moon lord
Same
Build for lucky and melee speed...it absolutely wreck... because you get Double damage on crit
dude he obliterated duke!! no wonder they nerfed the blade
Dude, Flying Dragon is WAAAAYYY better than terra blade. Full peircing effect is crazy for both bosses and events.
What’s the point in needing it?
Menacing was always better than violent
Try it with the offensive beetle armor
man, they wanted to bring the terra blade back on top but then they just nerfed it once it was back 😢
You should use the loadout feature
There's no use for it aside from main build, and mining and fishing builds.
@@AzureRT456 Its good for when you are exploring and have alot of accessories in your inventory
it was fun while it lasted
Re logic won’t let me be happy 😢
I knew they were going to nerf it. Why is it such a bad thing to have a slightly good weapon?
I know right? if anything, they should nerf zenith or at least compensate other classes for it. I mean I get it, zenith is post-ml, but it's still annoying that you are basically forced to play melee at that point of the game because all other classes are vastly inferior. sure, you don't have to play melee but who wants to intentionally gimp themself?
Wow they really trying to nerf terrablade into oblivion huh
I LOVE YOU GUNGNIR!
I do think the new HMblade is bad because most of the player using it with the statue.
Atleast for me tho.
