SD resident here. If you go back to the Hills again either bring a UTV/side by side or rent one. Quads or dirtbikes will work too. The hiking trails in Custer and Spearfish Canyon are worth doing, but its the old forest logging roads that go back into the areas you can't see from the road that really bring out the beauty of the place. And Needles highway with no roof over your head, and the pigtails... Seriously its an entirely different experience. You can also escape a lot of the heat in the height of summer by going to highest elevations between Hill City and Deadwood. Make sure you eat at the Sugar Shack too. Great burgers and fair prices.

I'm so glad y'all enjoyed your time in our beautiful South Dakota. The weather varies from barely tolerable to brutal regardless of the time of year, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Nature is a force to be respected and reckoned with, and South Dakota lets you know it. Feel free to come back anytime.

Great place to visit. I grew up in Rapid CIty and the Black Hills, Badlands, and Hot Springs were all my playground. It used to be much less busy. I could ride for hours on my motorcycle and count the number of cars I saw on my hands. If you go during the Sturgis bike rally, then you wouldn't be able to find a spot to camp or a hotel room, and you would be stuck in traffic everywhere... Still, a wonderful place..and I miss the beef being cheaper than chicken. It's hard to get a good cut of beef since I left South Dakota.

I have been to the Badlands NP and the Grasslands. It’s true. Very beautiful and too hot as it was a July 4th weekend. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Custer State Park, Devils Tower in Wyoming, Mt. Rushmore, and all the other cool places was definitely worth a visit.
I agree with what Susie said that “there’s no wrong way” to enjoy the outdoors. The right way is whatever works. Most of my solo trips is a combination of developed camping, boondocking, and staying at high end hotels.

Mosquito and black flies are a nightmare everyone can avoid. Take vitamin b complex. Reason being,it makes your skin smell and they don't land. My mom cooked in the mountains and never got bit. Food for thought. Strength and honor 🙏🤗🥰

What a great adventure. On our return from Kodiak, we drove down to Colorado and then east through Kansas. So many family memories were made. I agree, SD was my favorite state to travel through. Mt Rushmore = North by Northwest, great old movie.

Where I live you will not believe this but it happened and made St Louis news. This family let their wiener dog out at night to use the bathroom. An big horned owl came down grabbed the dog and took off with it and these people didn’t even know it happen. 20 miles away the owl dropped it in the middle of the road right in from of a car. The people in car was freaked out of course. They stopped picked the dog up and luckily it had tags and microchipped. He finally made it home by car this time. He needed some stitches where owl had his talons in him. Good ending and a lesson. Do not leave your small dogs outside alone at night

We live near the Dunes and they are one of my favorite camping sites. The dunes are very difficult when they are dry, so rain or snow make them do-able. Be warned--people die there nearly every summer. They lose their way, run out of water, don't consult maps, get disoriented. The "river" you wade through is Medano Creek. Some years there is no water at all. A few years go the creek was wide and deep--a real adventure for the kids.

South Dakota is my neighbor state. We live in Minnesota. We’ve visited Custer State Park once, and we swore we’d go back again as often as possible. Love the black hills. We were in Colorado last summer. It is a mind blowing and beautiful state, but way too crowded and very rude people and drivers. We enjoyed the scenery, but that’s where the enjoyment ended in Colorado. Such a shame.

I am watching this 3 hour video now, and excited to see your trip. I just wanted to give a shout out to both you and Susie Luke. Your upcoming trip, will be awesome too. Thanks for sharing your trip with us all. In 2021, I did 16 states in 12 days, mid May. Most of Yellowstone was opened, but one main road on the eastern part of the park was closed, most campsites then. Had a fabulous time also. Brought camping gear, but many camp sections in other National parks were still closed too. We did what we could. Make a Trip to Northern Michigan U.P. the Pictured rocks trails overlooking Lake Superior, and cliffs, has great locations for camping on cliff areas. The trails are fabulous. The Porcupine Mountains and Lake of the Clouds in Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan, has fabulous hiking trails and Black Bears up on Escarpment trails, eating blueberries. Then Copper Harbor on the Kewanaw Peninsula too, and Copper mines. Taquaminum Water falls. Mackinaw Island. Very worth traveling to Michigan and the Great lakes.

So I lived in Colorado for 15 years but never visited the places you went. the sand dunes is sill a bucket list. Try the forest to the north. The national forests are amazing plus all the creeks . I know you don't fish but its awesome.

The drive from Badlands through the Black Hills, Devils Tower, Yellowstone, and the Grand Tetons is easily my favorite drive of all time. I've driven the entire US six times and nothing comes close to that route.

Thank you for a greate movie. Will take it bit for bit. Just one note hahaha, If you are in need for a new nickname, gingerspot would be a great one. ( hope you dont take this in the wrong way) But I had similar going on in my beard some years back. Dark, black, grey and then a red spot right smack in the middle. You have 2, one on eather side. Gave memories from the past for me.
Thank you both for your vids and sharing them with us. Wish i lived where you camp, im the only one in my family who like go out in nature and camp. Gets a bit boring through the years always being alone with it. If you ever want to come to Sweden and Ystad, ( so far south you can come) your more then welcome to pay a visit and perhaps I can show some great places around here.
    Regards. //Lasse

Great trip so ffar. You are so brave to brave the Badlands, they are so Bad. lol I have a suggestion for when you can’t have a real campfire. Take along some LED , coin battery candles, get the kind that flicker. Set them up where you want a fire to sit around at night. Place some wood or kindling or rocks to reflect the lflickering lights. It really creates the illusion of a campfire, without fire hazard.. An arrangement of “tea lights” on a stump or a log, can light up the night Great for “night-owls”, who enjoy sitting out in the night listening to the forest and enjoying a hot cocoa or even coffee..🔥🕯️🕯️🔥
