Sorry, that is not totally true. You can say "I am a student today" and you will not be forever a student, but the verb used is SER. When you say "He is dead" that is a permanet condition and one uses ESTAR to say so. Thus the right explanation is to say that SER is for description and definitions; ESTAR is for change of condition or location.
