Not that he's not recognizing the pitch, he's just not seeing it until it's too late. I've long suspected he might have vision issues and just cannot accept it. When I was in high school I all of sudden was struggling to get contact even on pitches I was sure about after not having those issues in middle school or grade school. I could still draw walks but had a lot more swings and misses than usual. Turns out, I have astigmatisms in both eyes and I didn't know about until years later because I just didn't get my eyes checked. My vision at distance was NOT good and my close up vision was better, but also not ideal. A lot of people think their vision is fine so they don't get them checked and they won't know their vision is bad until they actually see what good vision looks like. I now wear glasses and I still cannot imagine how I was able to bowl in my league without them. Even in a sport a lot simpler, vision matters in regards to targeting things. I take off my glasses to clean them and think, "how did I ever bowl like this?", after looking down the lane with them off. I've always regretted not catching this sooner, it would've made playing baseball back in those days a lot better. I had suspected there might have been something wrong, I had lost the ball in the sky quite a few times with no sunlight to blame, but didn't think anything of it because I was athletic and quick enough to adjust to a fly ball at the last second and catch it. That was really my big tell now that I look back on it. I know people now that are in their 50s that are still too stubborn to get their eyes checked, or wear the glasses they are prescribed too. I will never understand why people are so stubborn about eye heatlh. Not saying Baez is, just my speculation of his struggles, but it definitely would make sense if it ever came out that he had eye issues.
Pitchers realized that they didn't ever have to throw Baez a strike and he never adjusted. I'm actually surprised Detroit hasn't bought out his contract. He's actively hurting a competitive team.
Baez bat speed has slowed, and since they're pitching faster these days, the combination of those two things is an absolute disaster. He is Vladimir Guerrero with opposite results.
I watched biography on Greg Maddox, most MLB players sit on pitches, so it’s easier to get a strikeout. But, once hitters hit 35, it’s hard to catch up to pitches. Meaning, he has to choose his pitch when he goes to bat.
Side topic, was playing rec room baseball and someone started swinging at everything. 15 people including me started chanting “Take a pitch, stupid b!” and “Let’s go Baez, let’s go!”
Thank god the Mets did not give this absolute waste of space money. I wish they hadn't given up a prospect to get him in the first place one of the worst trades in team history.
It was easy to find him good on the cubs because rizzo, Bryant, zorbrist and fowler never struck out. You can hide the ks when the other hitters give you such great at bats.
As a Tigers fan he’s been frustrating. I don’t hold the ire that many others do because I’ve seen when he’s clicking and that Javy is impressive. There is a delay right now on any possible upswing for him however as he just went on the IL. Apparently according to manager AJ Hinch on a radio interview just after his stint started he said that have had been dealing with chronic back pain for 2 years and it just finally became unbearable. I could lean conspiracy and think they’re getting ready to drop him, or I can look at this break for him as a potential blessing. (For the record I thought he looked a little stiff on fielding play right before this designation so I think this is a legit injury) hopefully the time off allows him to heal his body and mind and he comes back on fire. Frankly I hope both him and Torkelson both break out of their struggles because when those guys are right they’re fun to watch.
I played baseball from tball through high school and American Legion. I was a good fielder. Played 2nd and shortstop. I was not a good hitter. 7:42 After seeing half a video of Baez swings and misses it feels like Bobby's waiting an eternity to swing at those outside pitches. Way more compact of a swing than Baez
He’s always swing at everything. He was able to make it work. But problem is as soon as that bat speed drops just a tad now he can’t make up for bad plate discipline
He's always been a great fielder with good home run power who refuses to adjust his approach, hence, his failures now. You can only skate by on talent for so long. He got the bag though. Does he need glasses?! Only half joking, a vision problem could explain why he makes so many seemingly clueless swings
Man…I forget the play…but there was a CB for the Redskins that couldn’t catch an interception to save his life. He ended up going to the chargers, where a coach had him get his vision checked on a whim. One laser eye surgery later and he was near the top of the league in interceptions. So you never know.
I have to believe teams give their players regular eye exams to head off potential issues, since vision is the most important thing for a hitter. But if it's just a basic vision test, it might not pick up more subtle problems like with spatial acuity. But something is obviously wrong with him, physical or mental.
javy struck out at a higher rate with the cubs than he ever has with the tigers, (his past few seasons have the lowest K% of his career) and he doesn't chase as much for the tigers either. the issue is that with the cubs he managed to have an elite barrel rate despite chasing so much. he could barrel literally anything, and he played like it. but now? he doesn't play with the same confidence. he's found himself in a middle ground where he doesn't chase as much, but lost his ability to barrel the ball and punish hittable pitches. the issue isn't that he swings at everything, the problem is that he lost confidence in his ability to hit any pitch thrown at him.
Before the video even got to how long his swing was I was thinking to myself "Damn, his swing is long af". If he could adjust his mechanics to have a more compact swing along with keeping his bat speed, he'd be in a better spot. Instead he just keeps going up there and daddy hacking
we all gonna mention he decided to go to the park where all hitters go and suck? Comerica Park? LOL. Look at how Nick Castellanos left Detroit and immediately played the best baseball of his career.
im sure this video just shows some of his worst swings but his head just goes all the way to left field line. That's literally the number one thing they tell you not to do becaue it shows you are just trying to hit homeruns and pull the ball.
As a tigers fan there’s no doubt he saw our offer said yes and was like I guess I’ll play for Detroit for my summertime. He does not care about hitting 😂😂😂 it’s fckn wild.
I feel like teams are going to have so much hesitation signing players to long term deals anymore that players wont be signed until before spring training and have to take shorter deal like we saw this past offseason
Does Baez smile because he hits well or does he hit well because he's smiling? why not go up there there with a forced smile on his face? what could it hurt? nothing else seems to be working.
Actually, hard to believe as it may be, Javy’s issue is that he’s not swinging ENOUGH. For how bad he is, he has over a .300 batting average with RISP this year as well as last year. Javy has actually been swinging less every year since he’s been in Detroit. Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press did some statistical research and found that Javy’s swing % with RISP is just as high if not higher than it was pre-2022. Detroit’s coaches have tried to make javy more selective because he’s such a free swinger, but being selective was never what made him so good. He’s always had terrible pitch recognition, but swinging at everything lead to more hits regardless of how much he struck out. He is too conscious of his approach. He is too in his head. Evan Petzold told him this in an interview and Javy said he was not aware of those statistics but that it was interesting to him. I blame the Tigers hitting coaches.
no...... The Tigers don't have an adequate hitting coach ..... That's why Baez average has dropped - that's why Torkelson was sent to the minors - that's why it's taken Colt Keith so long to get up to speed ... that's why Baddoo's average has dropped off .... that's why the Meadows brothers career ended...That's why both Tiger catchers are hitting a paltry .220..... That's why the team average is .232...... Hinch is a LOUSY manager and his staff is even worse.

His arrogance ruined his career! I can’t stand him!!!
It’s arrogance is what it is. The guy wants to hit everything and is willing to go down swinging(literally) to do so.
we all gonna mention he decided to go to the park where all hitters go and suck? Comerica Park? LOL.
Look at how Nick Castellanos left Detroit and immediately played the best baseball of his career.
@@ashwinranji8790. Nasty Nick was solid in the D.
im sure this video just shows some of his worst swings but his head just goes all the way to left field line. That's literally the number one thing they tell you not to do becaue it shows you are just trying to hit homeruns and pull the ball.
He’s just like me (when I play The Show)
He isn't intentionally swinging at balls, he probably just can't pick up the spin (anymore).
As a tigers fan there’s no doubt he saw our offer said yes and was like I guess I’ll play for Detroit for my summertime. He does not care about hitting 😂😂😂 it’s fckn wild.
I hope not but we might have another Baez situation in Christopher Morel. Ugh
Pretty Baezed about it.
Baez could be so good still. His batting average when there are RISP is nearly .400. That just shows he still can get hits if he wants to focus
As a Tigers fan….. never mind 😡😤
"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take"
-Wayne Gretzky
I feel like teams are going to have so much hesitation signing players to long term deals anymore that players wont be signed until before spring training and have to take shorter deal like we saw this past offseason
He has so much movement in his load. If he cut down on chasing out of the zone and quieted his hands before swinging, he would be much better off
His career was over a long time ago.
8:01 sits on the toilet is crazyyyyyyyyy
Tigers need to DFA Javy. They are literally better without him there.
So THIS is what Vladimir Guerrero Sr. would have looked like if he sucked…:/
Yeah. Pretty much
This is me in MLB the show...
When a guy has a SIX-TO-ONE career strikeouts to walk ration, NO ONE IS GOING TO THROW HIM A STRIKE.
i was at the sox game were he went way out of the zone
They should rename him Christopher Morel.
Even after hearing his early career stats, he didn't sound that impressive... wtf is baseball on to give him a massive deal
Does Baez smile because he hits well or does he hit well because he's smiling? why not go up there there with a forced smile on his face? what could it hurt? nothing else seems to be working.
He should take ever pitch until he gets 2 strikes. He would walk 50% of the time
supposedly that's what Trout did all through the minor leagues
3:00 lmfao
He got the bag. That's what happened.
Yea it’s totally the hitting coaches fault 🤡
As a Mets fan who wanted to resign him, my god we dodged a bullet (and now I feel dumb) 😂
I think that as pitching and hitting metrics advance batters will fall further than further behind.
Baez swings like me in The Show 🤦🏾♂️
Baez is just all of our RTTS players
He was going off in the wbc.
Im a cubs fan and i remember saying “if we only keep one (bryant, rizzo, or baez), i want them to keep baez.” Glad im not making decisions lol
for me it was Bryant😂
This guy is such a huge drag on our budget here in Detroit, can't stand this guy.....
This video is a peek into Bo Bichette's future.
If the Tigers trade Baez he will hit 250 and play good defense with his new team. I think a lot of his issues are the Tigers
Man everyone thought back in the 2021 offseason thought that Correa to Detroit was gonna happen and instead get jabroni baez
Well this also explains to me what is going on with julio Rodriguez right now
He should have stayed with the Mets if it was an option cause his numbers then were actually really good
He's just another example of why contracts should be INCENTIVE based
