    The Affair explores the emotional and psychological effects of an affair that destroyed two marriages, and the crime that brings these individuals back together. Season four finds Noah (West), Helen (Tierney), Alison (Wilson) and Cole (Jackson) in their own orbits, alienated from each other, spinning further and further away from where they all began. Every character is involved in a new relationship, forcing them each to decide if they’re ready and willing to leave the past behind for good - with a season about new beginnings, tragic ends and the ever-elusive possibility of forgiveness. Sanaa Lathan joins season four as Janelle, the tough-as-nails principal of the charter school where Noah teaches. Ramon Rodriguez guest stars as Ben, a Marine veteran now employed by the VHA and Alison's new love interest. Additional season four guest stars include Russell Hornsby (Grimm), Christopher Meyer (The Fosters), Amy Irving (Yentl) and Phoebe Tonkin (The Vampire Diaries). Writers Guild Award-winning playwright and writer/producer Sarah Treem (House of Cards, In Treatment) and Hagai Levi (In Treatment) created the series. Treem, also the showrunner, and Levi serve as executive producers. Jessica Rhoades is an executive producer on season four.

    The ONLY time Alison changes the script, it only costs her her life
    Smh it's very unfortunate for Alison

    I really love Alison and Helen's conversations and scenes together (not only this one!) and I love Helen behaving as Alison's "therapist" (interesting, we can only see this in Alison's point of view...)! 👍

    I wish they had the whole conversation Helen was having with Alison.

    Alison always sees herself as the victim, even when she's the perpetrator and she's completely blind to it. It's about time someone called her out on it.

      In S4, we learn that Alison's "origins" are rooted in victimhood, and that the way she was made to see herself, by virtue of her mother, Athena's, attitude towards motherhood in general and Alison in particular, was that she was easily "discardable". As such, she has always felt unworthy of the love she receives and inadequate in the love she had to give. This was exacerbated exponentially by the death of her son, Gabriel, for which Alison blamed herself. This shame mixed with guilt mixed with a chronic feeling of unworthiness and "undeservingness" fueled Alison's victimhood perspective to as yet unfulfilled suicidality. I am convinced that the only reason Alison did NOT kill herself before she became pregnant with Joanie is because she felt she had not yet atoned sufficiently for her failures to Cole and to Gabriel and (as we're shown more explicitly in S4) her failures to Joanie and even to Athena, for not being a child lovable enough to merit her mother's attention and presence.
      What we see once Joanie is born, and the truth comes out about who Joanie's biological father is, is Alison trying (perhaps in vain) to earn the right for some modicum of self-respect as a mother to Joanie and to herself as a person. Ruth Wilson's insistence on breaking from the show is why we get the narrative with Ben that culminates in the S4 conclusion. Otherwise, I suspect that we would have gotten to see Alison earnestly clawing her way out of this chasm of self-imposed guilt and shame and victimhood to some degree of independence and self-assertiveness. I believe Noah's conversation with Joanie in the series finale episode would have been an exchange Alison might have had with her!

    This must be Alison’s perspective, her recollection is very unrealistic. She always plays victim. Even the bar scene between Helen and Alison, Alison’s perspective was Helen acting as her therapist.

    If you don't like how men are treating you, then change your story. Play a different character.

      SunshineGirl I never bought this story line. Her longest relationship was with Cole and he never treated her like that and neither did Noah. Noah married her too

      Time passes by, people change, point of views change. Helen was always one of the most mature characters in the series, the fact that she is able to have empathy in that level is very noble and not unrealistic at all. Maybe we're watching the wrong show but this is was never a simple cliché portrayal of a story of betrayal. And the fact that that moment of friendship and confrontation was explored is to me an extraordinary point in the history. (sorry if my english was bad, i'm brazilian)

    This season just feels like an excuse for a newly enlightened script writer to inject pop psychology into a tv show...emdr...walk abouts...law of attraction...the reiki stuff from the past

  • @annm4137
    @annm4137 6 лет назад +6

    That would NEVER happen in real life. Maybe that's why it's in a show? This series does a very good job of jumping back and forth to likely somewhat scenarios and super unrealistic ones.
