    I have a pair of R-51PM since August last year. I've switched Dynamic Bass Extension (DBE) on and adjusted it at 55/80 clicks. I paired it with Elac Debut 2.0 s10 subwoofer. I adjusted subwoofer's crossover frequency around 68Hz (4 clicks) ad volume set to 2 o'clock. I tried several combinations on DBE, crossover frequency and subwwofer volume. I found this is y cup of tea. My listen room size is about 200ft2.

    Coming in late to the conversation. I bought these last year for my entry level turntable setup and added a Klipsch 8" sub. Pretty good deal overall for the price and in my small room. For entry level it is perfect. Turntable, speakers, and sub. No mess or fuss. The phone amp and sub out are great selling points. Kids Bluetooth their phones and stream. When I upgrade they'll get this gear. I'm glad you mentioned their lack of brightness. As I have nothing to compare I always wondered. I actually think they don't have enough high end. I guess I now know what I need to try next.

    Perhaps this comment comes too late (I just found this video now). I know that you have good ears, young man, but speaking for myself, my hearing is 15 dB down from 2.5 kHz. You impress me with a good understanding of sound and knowledge. kudos. I'm 51 and my doctor says my hearing is just about 'normal'. So, maybe this a message for (possibly) us 'older' guys. It might be of benefit for you (and for us 'older' gents) if you could somehow take age and normal hearing loss into consideration when making points of brightness in relation to recommendations. Saying that, I can hear sibilance despite my my minimal hearing loss (maybe that's something worth explaining how it's possible). Keep up the good work!

    I have these and I think they're really good overall. If you sit too close you can hear that there is some very slight hiss when music isn't playing though (due to the built in amp I think), they have very impressive bass response but won't quite hit the very deepest of the deep, and I tend to bump the midrange and treble up just a tad with DSP, it just gives them some clarity and presence that I think they lack a bit naturally. Then they really sing.

      i like my goldenear 3d array. definitely an atypical speaker bar, being passive - but it's wide enough to have a decent stereo separation (plus polk's SDA crosstalk cancellation) and the drivers and tuning are all of very high quality - with ribbon tweeters even.
      i run it full range (large) and have manually tweaked the audyssey configuration to boost the bass quite a bit. it handles it like a champ, and needs it (being a fairly small sealed enclosure) in order to hand off to my sub at a low enough crossover freq so that i can't localize the midbass coming from the wrong direction

    There is reason why there is an upward trend for soundbars. Traditional home theater speakers involve a lot of time in setting up and are finicky with the type of gear that you hook up to them, traditional speaker setup also ends up costly if you want good sound. The biggest advantage soundbars have is they are easy to plug and play and are very versatile. Some flagship soundbars now offer good audio quality and home theater experience as a result the customers are not inclined to take up the headache's of owning traditional speakers.

    • @Jayiyagi

      of course. Some flagship soundbars are very cool these days and I fully plan on reviewing some. However the r51m do a great job at a lower price without the headache of owning traditional speakers with additional features that soundbars don't usually have

    • @darrenloke5486
      @darrenloke5486 3 года назад +3

      Convenience is really the only thing going for the soundbars really. Oh, and another is of course ignorance (lack of better word), most who buy their first audio end up with soundbars, as they sound amazing compared to the tiny speakers enclosed inside TVs. Little do they know about stereo superiority benefits on imaging, soundstage, separation, etc.

    • @mihirchitnis905
      @mihirchitnis905 3 года назад

      @@darrenloke5486 More and more dsp processing will be the future trend in speakers and soundbars. Also most people don't have huge spaces to accommodate even large bookshelf speakers like klipsch rp-600m in their listening area. Also flagship soundbars (upwards of $1000) sound really good for the price. People also prefer plug and play devices, the average joe doesn't give a squat for impedeance, speaker sensitivity.

      Not sure if you're still in the market. I actually own the R51PM and I sure love the simplicity and reduction of cables and many connectivity options packed in BT, Optical, Phono etc... however, If you have the space go for the amp + passives. One big letdown for them is that Bluetooth is only A2DP which is old hat now. The bluetooth connectivity is something that they marketed as a feature for these so kinda meh. Only discovered recently after casting music to TV which is connected via optical and finding it had a noticable lead in clarity.
      "The A2DP standard operates in stereo and supports most of the standard audio compression codecs. The recommended sub-band coding (SBC) codec supports up to 345 kilobits per second at 48 kilohertz. That's approximately one third the quality of standard CD audio-roughly the equivalent of a high-quality MP3 recording."

    If it doesn't have a HDMI in then it isn't a soundbar killer... unless you are ok with using two remotes. With HDMI and ARC you can control the volume of the speakers using the TV remote. With optical out on a TV you usually can't. Klipsch The Fives has hdmi but cost more, but also look better visually and the volume knob is in a more convenient location on the top instead of the back.

    Whatever you do, just don't get the R41PMs for near-field. These are smaller, too small. Too much highs. Sounds small. Either too much (DSP corrected) bass, or not enough. Kinda v-shaped. Horrible for near-field. But great in a BIG room.

      @@milixu109 Apparently R51s are way better. No replacement for displacement, I guess (bigger speakers, better sound). My guess is, they perfected the 51M/PMs, but just used the exact same treble driver with a smaller woofer for the R41M/PMs. I will buy the R51Ms. I trust this reviewer.

      Ehh, I kind of agree. Treble nearfield definitely is an issue, sometimes I suppose it can “sparkle” but a lot of the time it’s just sibilant and has too much treble. Terms of sound? Ehh... yes no replacement for displacement but they’re not that bad. I mostly have issues with that treble, and that it can sometimes sound a little dry.

Nobody sits directley between two speakers and alone in normal leaving room, lets be honest. And until there is at least 3 speakers involved, soundbar is better option for most people not to mention more elegant and with infinitly greater WAF. Just my opinion
