    I nearly choked on my protein bar when you said you were not alive during 80s, that is when I was living my best life! I tend to forget my age (55) cause I don't feel it and still listen to all that old good music.

    Im honestly really glad you didn't include bauhaus, the cure, and Siouxsie in the actual countdown. They're the bands that everyone knows and it was nice getting a few "new" bands in a top 10.

      That said, try imagining goth without Bauhaus, the Cure, and Siouxsie. Even if you could live without their music, their influence is profound and undoubtedly coloured many favourites in this genre.

      Absolutely! I included Joy Division in my proto-goth records video that covered mostly dark post-punk from the late 70’s (linked below):

      @@ANT96-x8d Never really thought of Duran Duran as goth, more synth-pop. That being said, Depeche Mode is often said to "not be goth" and I still think they have some pretty goth songs.

    My own favorite goth band from the '80s is Fields of the Nephilim, and it's always sad to see them get short shrift in lists like these. Still, as you say, it's all subjective, so no worries.

    • @nickl.eakins3250
      @nickl.eakins3250 4 года назад +1

      Fields of the Nephelim is the first death rock band I ever heard and ,frankly, it's the only death rock band I've ever really liked. The Nordic death bands are a bit too reliant on heavy volume and are a tad cliche by me. I know Fields is an English group but they have an American West feel to them I can relate to. Their sound is legitimate because it is so gritty. Lately, I've been sampling a little Dark Country which I find kind of interesting.

    • @catbwoy
      @catbwoy Год назад +1

      @The Pentagenarian It's all subjective, we can all throw in our own preferences. Chameleons are niche even for a list of niche bands. I'd have Play Dead high in my list but again, it's all subjective.

    i am a 56 year who lives in Leeds and got to see a lot of goth bands. The Mission was a band from leeds that had two members of the sisters of mercy. Ghostdance had another original member of The Sisters of Mercy and an original member of the Skeletal Family, who were the support band to the Sisters in '85. Fields of the Nephillim toured Yorkshire for every single let alone albums. Red Lorry supported the Mission in '86.

    All picks were right on! From 1980 to 85 I dj'ed at punk teenage clubs in Arizona. When the supposed punk kids were trying to be hard core the only music available was the cure, new order, the smiths and the trendy bands as such. I had been listening to CoX, red lorry, Xmal , march violets and virgin prunes since their conception and when I started playing them at the club it was an awakening! Other bands were Divynals and the yachts. Great music from great bands!!!

    I was actually at the first Sisters of Mercy gig, fantastic. Living in Leeds from 1980 and working in the F Club where many bands like Sisters, Killing Joke, Cramps etc played. I would have to include the Fields of the Nephilim and The Mission in my top five, but there is a hidden gem of a goth band that went unnoticed. Gargoyle Sox from detroit, check out the mini album As The Master Sleeps. I became good friends with John (the main man in the band) and received many cds and unrealised tracks through their ever changing transformations. From Gargoyle Sox, Rubber, Trunc, Trapdoor Spiders and now Gravetown. If you can find this album (Headless Horseman also) Pink Little Playhouse is the stand out track

    This video is precious, thank you! I totally agree with all of these bands, this top 10 goes to the very core of the 80s goth. We are waiting for another top 10, something like part 2. S&B are still largely ignored by RnR Hall of Fame - a shame and disrespect from this sh..ty "institution", since it inducted so many bands that were directly influenced by S&B. Not to mention Siouxsie alone, a powerful, uncompromising frontwoman, who simply cleaned the path for generations of musicians to come.

    • @Morphstock
      @Morphstock 3 года назад

      The Hall of Fame tends to induct artists who've had a big commercial impact in the US, I'm not sure that the Banshees ever really broke through in a big way there. Not worth worrying about really, I bet Siouxsie doesn't care.

    As someone who was around in the 80's the distinction between subgenres and even genres themselves weren't as rigid. Clubs that catered to "goths" would play goth rock, early industrial (like Dig It by Skinny Puppy and Over the Shoulder by Ministry), darker synthpop like Depeche Mode or Modern English, New Order. etc. Even the fashion overlapped really. I was mainly into hardcore (like Minor Threat) but my friends and I were Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus and The Cure fans. At the time, all of these bands were a vast alternative to popular music and mainstream radio.
    Another example is The Misfits although a hardcore-horror-punk band all the goths I knew loved them.
