It is good to be with like minded folks. Need to mention this....I was introduced to someone that his wife claimed he was a Stones fan.....5 minutes in I had to change the subject as there is a fan, then there is "A FAN". The boys are doing what they love, and I enjoy seeing the clips of Keith's face having fun and doing what he loves. I believe they have been in the studio prior, and will be interesting to hear what comes next. I think Keith is playing the bass on it also, but I just hope, they can get close to Charlie's sound. cheers!!

I wish all the real Stones fans in the world could see these videos as they're missing out on the greatest documentaries of any band. Every friend I've recommended them to are blown away. Maybe I should start joining the Facebook fan pages and post one explaining how much more there is to it. I wonder which one would be the best start? I'm pretty partial to the SGs ones but I also think B&B part 3 is my favorite.

@@FlipSideCT The end of the doc is bittersweet. In a perfect world you'd get a good night sleep, Keith would give you a B12 shot in the ass and you'd go on in to ER. LOL. But I do thank you for all you have done. I hope you find more success with these as I said they are the finest I've seen on any band and they happen to be on my favorite band! What band has someone do hours upon hours of supreme work on them? Not even the Beatles or Elvis. Kudos!
The Godfather of documentaries, an EPIC! Loved the album breakdown and insights! Great rehearsal info and bringing the info out that is not common. Loved the Tosh and Happy T expose! Bearsville was cool info. The tour insight was just so insightful and with such a great flow. I also was so glad to see the photographer gratitude and those photos were wonderful! Very cool rockandrollphotogallery, one to look into, also Curt's book! Loved that ending, what a way to go out! brilliant! thank you!
Yeah man! Really love your work, Steve. These are the best Rolling Stones documentaries that I ever seen. I'm waiting to get to the part when the Stones are hanging out at Jim Carroll's party. Love that scene.
I was ar the Anaheim show with the shoe incident and that was amazing. Synchronicity like you've never seen After Mick said "why don't you all throw your bloody shoes" there was a slight pause and then literally a wave of shoes rose from the crowd. I was only 15 at the time and s huge Stones fan and my sisters took me and one of my friends to the show. It was very hot that day. Prince got booed off the stage. The last act before the Stones was the Outlaws. We waited three hours for the Stones to get on the stage. I don't know how it sounded from the board but the sound in the stadium was awful. Very bad, but I didn't I got to see Mick, Keith, Ronnie,, Bill, and Charlie and that was enough for me. The sound did not dampen my love for the Stones. I am still a big fan today 45 years later. In the 70's it was a huge deal when the Stones toured America because they only toured every 3 years. Also want to say thank you for your great in depth documentaries. I love all the details you put in. I can't get enough of that. Some Girls is my favorite Stones album and when I saw your 3 part documentary I was in heaven. Thank you!!!!

The sound in these big stadiums were not ready for prime time and it bounced all over. But they wanted to play big. I believe your Prince experience was in the 81 tour. As a recovered heroin and coke addict, I really never listened to Keith’s lyrics on Before They Make me Run- usually Stones bring up old memories of being high and playing my vinyl, but over time I’m able to come back and love every album again anew. And this time I read the lyrics as you talked about the tune. They hit me so hard. To live the high life, you deff live in the now of the first verses, then when you feel yourself slipping, you know the end is coming - verse two. Verse three is getting sober “I’ve had my fun” - I’m going to walk (clean up and get back to myself) before they make me (go to jail, death, be institutionalized)
As I was not the one in the crowed getting high, but others were, I can see how it relates to that time for you. Keith put it in words and did a remarkable job. I know Pink Floyd's lyrics Comfortably Numb hits home for many also.

@@FlipSideCT I tried to see the Stones live since the 81 tour when I was in high school. I could never get tickets. I finally saw them at Metlife Stadium in NJ after Mick’s heart surgery delayed it. It was great but bittersweet being Charlie’s last tour. I’m glad I got to see Charlie.

I will say this, when I put on his last solo, Crosseyed Heart, I heard the first song and just said oh no, it sounds like the 1st two solos, and did not listen anymore I was so disappointed. I just spent two days locked in ( and medicinally medicating) with Peter Jackson 's Beatles 30:02 retrospective Get Back. Two take aways. I recommend it to any musician looking for unintentional inspiration. ( I'm not a musician but play peerless bad guitar). Billy Preston looks so fresh, humble and innocent. A beautiful soul who just sparks up the band. Then look at Billy with the Stones in 75. A major transformation. Lol. The outrage he and Mick caused dancing together on stage was a hoot. Thanks for another beyond excellence and call of duty documentary my friend. Gold rings on ya!!

I think ‘Miss You’ was my kiwi wife’s acceptance of other Stones records. She grew up Auckland dance clubs in the 80’s and hated rock n’ roll till I begin educating her when we met in the mid 90’s. She knew ‘Miss You’ song from when she was a kid and it reminded her that she like some of their songs. Black and Blue was probably the first album I played for her, then Exile, Beggars, and Let it Bleed.
She probably is not alone and genius work by the Stones to bridge the gap. Cool that you turned her on, and cooler that she accepted it! thanks for sharing!

Once again an amazing job, even though I am also a student of this period I learned a few things. One of my favorite eras, when I was first introduced to the band. Although I was too young, I have friends who were at the Buffalo show, they did mention that the crowd was pretty rough and some people were upset about all the Some Girls songs, which made the atmosphere weird. My first bootleg was Garden State 78, black and white cover, great stuff. Thanks for doing this, I can wait for the next one.

Great documentary of a wonderful time in Stones history. Buffalo was my first Stones show and it was a hot one. They even stayed at the same hotel as we did and when they strolled through the open area at 2 am people went nuts. With a pool below several inebriated fans dove off the railing into the pool. Back then they allowed plastic containers in those days and we had gallons of warm vodka and pink lemonade to bring in the stadium. The only issue I recall was the first 10 rows flipping off Journey because we weren’t there to hear them. There was also some acrobatic acts, high wire and such as well as a skydiver. Quite the show it was. Thanks for the coverage.

So finally watched this. Steve, as usual, a hell of a job. I honestly was never a fan of Some Girls as a whole. I thought Miss You and Shattered were too played out. Before They Make Me Run is a hidden gem. Some Girls(the song) is just driven by that harp. Respectable is just straight out raw rock snd roll. It’s their answer to punk. Lies is another hidden gem. It’s not filler at all. I’m still not a fan of Beast and probably won’t ever be. The rest of the tunes are good, but I just don’t see the overall hype about the album as a whole. Maybe I think it’s missing something with Keith not being strong physically and the pressure of Toronto hanging over him. I’ve heard some bootlegs from the tour. It may have had songs that were weak once in a while, but overall the energy is there. Charlie and Ronnie really push the others. Thank you Steve. Hopefully we get some more Stones from you in the coming months. I definitely would love to hear your thoughts and anything about Beggars.
Hey Mike, thanks for your sharing your thoughts. Everyone approaches music their own way. The albums is not to be looked at a WHOLE, but listening and understanding all the parts that built it. Maybe a bit deep, but there are albums I just do not get like Pet Sounds or the band Can or Be Bop Jazz.....I wish someone would do some docs to help me! cheers

Regarding the 78 tour, I would hold Some Girls Live in Texas as one of the best live albums they ever put out. It is the last chance to hear them as a raw rock and roll band. The future tours had more musicians, backing singers, and all kinds of visual add ons. Those are fine, but the 78 tour shows the best work of Ronnie/Keith working together. Beast of Burden, Miss You and Imagination are some of my favorite live versions they've ever done.
you got it Justin. I just watched it with a buddy on a 10ft screen and DJ speaker system. Cranked, we walked away with a natural concert buzz that lasted a while. 100% correct it is one of the last real raw versions of pureness of just the band.
Mocambo is so incredible tho, esp when you think of what they were going through. When the chips are down tho the boys come thru, outrageous shows and all the band really firing woody esp playing his heart out not too much w just tasteful add ins if Billy and Ollie so it’s pretty stripped, Mocambo one of best ever live records

I really love how you edit the muzik, voice clips, pictures, and live footage altogether in a in-depth style 😁 I'm going to be learning how to be an editor myself. It's a skill that comes very naturally to me and our people in the entertainment biz tell me that it is one of the hardest jobs. But if you love and truly have a passion for your work, it's easy, and it's worth the time.

@ STEVE FLIP SIDE CT Yeah SOME GIRLS has this really great variety of songs on it and they aren’t all deadly serious too which gives it this relaxed space too. Like they were having some fun with it and it comes off very naturally and confidently . There’s this self assured feeling on it . There is also this thing on it that Keith talks about in his LIFE autobiography that he says he discovered is really important about music . I can’t remember the word he used . Not to mention the ancient art of guitar weaving is on there big time.
COOL it seems like they kept their cool and didn’t feel pressure making SOME GIRLS with how it came off. But you have confirmed for me that Keith was still very much still using junk. He wasn’t really clean until late 1978 -1979 was he ? ? ?
Their cover of "Imagination" is the Best Cover Ever Done by ANY band. One of their stellar moments. It's the Rolling Stones at the corner bar as the Best Band in Your Town. Jagger owns it with "knoooooooow meeee", completely outdoing Eddie Kendricks. So Tight, it's crystalline; so loose, it's hardly even there at times.
well.....you get it....yes indeed! It is mind blowing what they did and how. A very very under estimated tune by the public. I really think folks do not listen with a deep intention, but jnstead, just to hum along or dance to a tune is good enough.
Brian Jones was an adventurous multi-instrumentalist, who played sitar, dulcimer, marimbas, maracas, organ, harpsichord, oboe mellotron, theremin, slide guitar, sax and harmonica on early Stones classics. His influence on the Stones music starting with the "Aftermath" album was immense... He embellished songs such as "Ruby Tuesday," "Paint it Black" and "Under My Thumb," bringing textures and colors that added to the evolving Stones sound...His loss ended the Stones ventures into new areas musically, excett for periodic string arrangements.
Such a great great documentary… I’m 41, I grew up on this album , it reminds me of being a kid and how intrigued I was by the album art … it was my introduction to music. Great work with these videos ❤

I saw the Ft Worth concert (made into the dvd 'Some Girls In Texas'). It was the seventh and last small hall performance on the itinerary. Possibly the tightest show of the 1978 tour, I really lucked out finding a $40 scalper tick. Also saw both their Ft Worth concerts in 1972.
@@FlipSideCT You recommended Sam Cutler's 'You Can't Always . . .' book and I bought it. Read half of it last night, it's such a compelling story, even Cutler's childhood. If I wasn't careful I'd've read the whole thing and had nothing to read today.
I even enjoy the intricate stuff like explaining about the Mastering & Compression of Studio Versions of the songs. Coincidentally, another thing that I am learning. 💡

Great documentary. Well done. Brings back happy memories. I was one of the a Canadian contingent who travelled from Toronto to Buffalo for the July 4 concert.
Steve, I thought my eyes deceived me when I saw how long part 3 was. Was it Just My Imagination, Running Away With Me? After watching it I was surprised you didn't break it into 2 parts: Part 3 being the Some Girls lp, and Part 4 being the tour. But you are the expert with this so I bow to your knowledge and presentation. This epic was your Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia, Gone with the Wind! It certainly was a labour of love for you, and a wonderful way for me to spend the band's 60th anniversary. I can't thank you enough for making that day well spent with the band, with one of their greatest periods and masterpieces. NYC in the 70s was one of the most fertile times for artists, music, culture, sports, crime, etc, and the epicentre of this history with everything coming together in one chaotic and synergistic brew. Your analysis of each song goes over my head since the only thing I can play is a stereo, but it's still enjoyable to hear what musicians like yourself say. I found this to be the case with the podcast you turned me onto as well, Under the Radar. What a find that was, and it's so nice to hear others like those two hosts appreciate the more recent music put out by the band. I find that anything after Some Girls is overlooked even when Mick and Keith still can write some incredible tunes that should garner more attention and radio play. I too love When the Whip Comes Down. It's quite the rocker. If others took the time to listen to Some Girks, they would stop calling it a disco album. While it is diverse, Some Girls has much more of a punk-y feel. As you say, the Stones out-punked, the punks. I didn't find the videos for them plain or undecipherable but more a showcase of the band; the 80s proved to be ground zero for unintelligible videos, fortunately not by this band. Isn't the director that you mentioned, Michael Lindsay Hogg, also behind a ton of other work by the Stones, like Rock and Roll Circus, and numerous other song videos in the 60s and 80s, never mind other bands? The 1978 tour is a classic, one of their best, but not talked about in the same breath as the 1969, 1972-3 ones, or the colossal ones from 1989-90, 1994-5 etc. The music, energy, outfits all showcased the band without any frills, as it was stripped down. They were at their best, firing on all cylinders. I'm sure the shows at the El Mo had to light a fire under them, along with the possibility of Keith going to jail. I found it interesting that April Wine opened for the band at the July 4th show in Buffalo, since they had done that at the El Mo the yr before as well. It was ironic that Journey was there in Buffalo, as they opened for the Stones there in Sept 1981, when I was there. Besides the Texas show on DVD and CD, I am lucky enough to have audio recordings of the Woodstock rehearsals, as well as the Passaic and Detroit shows, all of which are top notch. I'd forgotten that they had mixed up the venue sizes like they have with more recent tours. Have you ever met Bill German? I'm not sure the Stones actually have a fan club now, but they did for a while in the 80s and I joined then. We got very detailed newsletters authored by Bill. When he put out his book, I made sure I got a copy, and it was delightful to read. One thing I don't get, and have questioned for a few yrs, even before the pandemic shut things down, is the encore. It seems every band is supposed to do one, and quite frankly, this ubiquitous act has no meaning anymore. Not every concert/performance is worthy of one. Time to cut out the b.s. and only do them when a show is that good. Enjoy the break from this for a while. You certainly have earned it, and no matter what album you turn to next, we will be waiting with excited anticipation. Take some time to relish the outrageous rampage the Yankees are on. There don't seem to be any challengers out there to take them on. They are a juggernaut with what seem to be no weaknesses. Thank you so much for what you do for the rest of us.

@@FlipSideCT I suppose you could do everything together thinking it was going to be one long Part and then split them up into two parts, releasing them at the same time or a wk or two apart. I can only imagine how taxing that one was. So much info. You are absolutely right about April Wine. There are many Cdn bands that never make it in the US, but they will have a following in bordering states due to Cdn airplay from our radio stations. April Wine eventually had the monster hit album Nature of the Beast in 1981, but at that point they wouldn't have been well known. The Stones may have also had a soft spot for them after the El Mo dates too. The fact Journey was there in 1978 surprised me. 3 yrs later they are much much bigger with the Escape lp. Stones fans are not always very nice to opening acts. I was at the SARSAid show in Toronto in 2003 and then booed Justin Timberlake, which as he even said, he got, as he didn't fit with the rest of the lineup. I was at a Who concert in Toronto in the early 80s, I think on their last "final tour" and fans booed Joe Jackson and threw hot dogs at him. At least you have connected with Bill German. That's basically as good as meeting him. Hopefully you can actually see one another face to face as two superfans should be in the same orbit. The encore...as you get older you just recognize it's part of the show, and calculated. Oh to be young and not so jaded, haha Enjoy the rest of the summer and the boys of summer.

Yo Steve, hey man I’m jumping in a little late here as I had just got out of the hospital with two knee replacements. I was in a crummy mood, but when I got into my living room and the first thing I did was flip the tube on your some girls documentary part three of three popped right up. Well, they just put me in a great mood. I perked right up and started digging it right away! Wow, another masterpiece for sure. Just so informational and you always touch on so many different things. A lot of things that I always knew about but had forgotten about them over the years and also a lot of new stuff to me that I have never seen before. Steve, you got to keep doing these, man! Every time I watch one of your docs I just want to grab my “tele” and play a bunch of stone stuff in (A) Standard tuned or even an open (E) or (G). I love how you break the songs down. There’s plenty of just really cool bits and pieces that can be found in these recordings. You have the natural ability to be able to find them all! I also enjoyed all the great information and stories about the Peter Tosh era, and everything that was going on around that time. Excellent, just excellent coverage on the touring dates, the different venues, ticket prices for back then, The good things that happened as well as do not so good things that happened like deaths, injuries, sound, and equipment issues. Yeah Steve, I really don’t think you left anything out. A lot of other emotional stuff too, fans getting burned with faulty fireworks, torrential rains and downpours. Also, in all of this you also found all of the fantastic and great things about this time frame. The Bearsville recording studio and history of the whole town and different artists that recorded there was very, very interesting also! This stuff is all very important, Steve. Especially for our younger fan base geeks. They will really keep learning a lot from you. That’s why you gotta keep it going man!!! I know it’s an awful lot of hours and very hard work that you do, extremely hard work that you do. You just Gotta keep it going, Steve. I know we all enjoy this stuff and benefit from it too. Look man, whatever you do next I know it’s gonna be great. Whether you jump back into some early, early stones stuff or maybe even into later on type of stuff like Bridges to Babylon. Interesting to know that at the Texas Fairmont Hotel was Ronnie checked in as "R. Biggs", a clear reference to the 1963 Great Train Robber, Ronnie Biggs, who was still living as a free man in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) at that time. Biggs's son Mike even became a children's pop band star in Brazil with "Turma do Balão Mágico" (Magic Baloon Gang) in the early 80s.
Hey Flipside, when I saw "the making of some girls" I couldn't beleive someone made a documentary about my favorite album. A very detailed one at that. Thank you so much. I thought Mick played all the harmonica on that album but then found out it was a dude named sugar blue. Besides loving the Stones music I find them very interesting as people and interesting as a band. As a musician Im always keeping my ears open listening to them as to how they write . The one thing I learned is how they get their songs worked out. They get together and play the shit out of them! Wow, who would have thought the Stones had an old fashioned work ethic that if you worked hard it paid off. The last thing is let's be honest part of the reason the Stones didn't sound great is because they were high as fuck. It's funny because sometimes they wouldn't even all end together. However, I saw them after the some girls tour on the steel wheels tour. They had cleaned up their act by then and they sounded great and they still sound great today.

We know they were under the influence plenty at that time, and it contributed to their greatness for sure. They may have been sloppy, but when the lights go on, they are ready to go. thanks for sharing, yes, 89' on became the hits and more studio sound. cheers, and enjoy the other docs.

They can live on, as long as the young ones get exposed. their style is so simple, but yet so hard. Yes, their best material was when they were flying. Especially the lyrics. Steve, my friend and I were at the JFK Philadelphia show; camped out over night, the whole bit. The article mentions the overnight and early morning outside of the stadium being like a Vietnam battlefield with the cherry bombs, ash cans, etc., and that's accurate. There was definitely an air of violence and danger. When the gates opened the crush to get in was intense. It was a long day inside and the opening bands did not get a warm welcome, and Foreigner was not up to that level of show yet, a bit like a deer in the headlights and all the songs sounded like the record. When the Stones came on the crowd pushed forward and really got into it as I recall. I always remember the great sound and pulse of Charlie and Bill coming from those stadium speaker stacks. A lot of disappointment when there was no encore and beer bottles rained down at the stage and it seemed like all the instruments were destroyed. A memorable experience for sure. Thanks again for another great video.

My then-wife Chris worked for a law firm that represented the radio station that was co-sponsoring the Soldier Field concert on July 8, 1978. The Stones were staying at the Whitehall Hotel for two weeks and flying out to their Midwest concerts. So on July 3, Chris and others from the firm got to have lunch at the Whitehall with Mick, Ronnie, and Charlie. Mick asked her to go to Detroit but she told him she was married. He signed a cocktail napkin for her: “To Chris, the girl with the faraway eyes.” Mick also sent her two dozen roses at her office at the Sears Tower. Moreover, he reserved seats for us in the press section for the concert, so we did not have to get there early and fight the general admission crowd. We sat in front of actor Levar Burton and the Stones were outstanding that day. And Mick could not have been more generous to us.

That was an awesome tour, '78! I was disenchanted after seeing their last concert in '75 in Buffalo and ignored this one. Thank goodness they have the video from Fort Worth! The best of the best!
Hello flipside CT Steve. Not in the same time zone yet but I’m back in Canada. ROCK&ROLL!!!!! Mountain Time!!!! Hope you are fine. Our Stones Keith and Mick ( last two active original members standing ) just celebrated 60 years on July 12th I believe. And then there were TWO!!! Rock on it is great to be back in Canada!!!!!! I should be in Toronto by the beginning of September. And in the same time zone. Got a good friend in Virginia that also moved back from Japan and I’ll be happy to be in the same time as him as well. The new 1977 live stones album from the Toronto live club shows sounds good. I’d like to dub it the 1977 HOT PINK live album. Steve was Keith’s Toronto bust before that show or after that show. I can never remember. Seems like Keith’s bust was before that to me. How have you been?

So he got busted the Sunday after playing El Mo ? Shit !!!!!! I think in hindsight old P Trudo was behind that . His young wife was having fun with the stones as you well know . Not good PR for old PT . His son is very very unpopular in Canada by the way. I don’t know maybe they went after Keith for it . Easy target in a way.
That was the best analysis/ breakdown of Miss You I ever heard. And I always though Lies was one of the highlights, so I was surprised to hear some thought it might be filler. And for the sake of saying so, this documentary is great. They all are but after your contextualization of the time, place, and urgency through the first two, this one brought it all home. Man, I don’t know if you can appreciate your work as much as others do as you’re in the middle of it, but it’s great!
Wonderful comment....loved hearing that you enjoyed the breakdown. I take much pride in my listening style and observations. More so then many others. The headphones help plenty. When we were younger we would listen to that cassette and keep rewinding it and analyzing. Maybe due being a Guitarist and knowing about studio work. Before I did the docs, I would read posts and blogs and forums and then watch YT vids hearing the crap of folks knocking down albums and songs. THIS IS WHAT PUSHED MY BUTTONS to move on the docs and explain to folks either you are not a fan / a casual or a deep fan. The hate / dislike would spread. If you can not enjoy it ALL, then do not consider yourself deep fan is what I said. Also the 10-15 min album review is bullsh*t, that is unacceptable to me. I cringe. The 3 part series is strategically thought out, and basically goes with the timeline of events. I am able to separate myself from being the CREATOR to the FAN, and watch it and listen as one, and YES appreciate it! I forget plenty of what I do so watching it thru cleanly makes me smile as this is the format I and others like you wanted to see all along! Well there you go, you brought out of me....thanks for the comments and support!!

Thanks so much for all your time and effort with these videos, great insights into what they were going through during the different periods. I saw them for the first time a month before my eighteenth birthday at JFK, we drove down all night from Ottawa, Canada and ended up about fifty feet from the stage, I remember welling up with emotion when they came on. We later saw them in Oshawa for Keef's benefit concert, we camped out in line for three days in Toronto to get tickets. Ahh, youth!
ahhhhh 18th Bday, drive down, 50 feet.....great memories, and you do not realize it back then what you were witnessing. cool to see the Ottawa gig. Yes, I do know the welling up feeling and emotion of the first times....so surreal. thank you for all!
Just picked up the Some Girls 2 cd special edition last week so perfect timing! My favorite Stones album since I first bought this in 78. Thanks for all your efforts!
I may be old, but I got to see ALL the Cool Bands. I was at the Oakland Coliseum Show On July 26th, 1978, and can confirm the helicopter that flew over the outdoor arena dumping Day-Glo ping ping balls and "Inflatable Ladies" on the crowd below, that day in honor of Mick's Birthday. I had previously seen them play in November 1969 (weeks before the California Altamont Concert) at the Boston Garden. They were young and powerful at that concert with Mick laying on the stage to slap his belt down hard when he sang "Well, you heard about the Boston -THWACK- lyrics of Midnight rambler. What a treat. I saw them play many times in between 1978 and now, too, because they almost always come to the San Francisco Bay Area while on tour. The last time however, I had to drive to LA to see them pay at SoFi in Inglewood. My all time favorite concert was at Desert Trip in Indio, CA in October, 2016. {6 bands three nights Friday - Bob Dylan & The Rolling Stones, Saturday - Neil Young with promise of the Real and Paul McCartney & Sunday - Roger Waters & The Who.}. Of course, I really went to see the Stones play, the other bands were icing on the cake.
Thank you so much for sharing this! You got to witness some exceptional time periods and tours. It is jaw dropping to even think about the events and the visuals. We are grateful we have clips to back to bring it back and to show why they are the greatest. Witnessing Mick's 70's stage antics is what gave the shows the extra lift, it was amazing the alter ego his broke into on stage. A huge difference once the 89's tour started and he started his miming improve moves. Very jealous you got to see the 2016 show.....that was an ultimate package.

By the way the BBC has released a great four part series on the Stones called My Life as a Rolling Stone. I don't know if you can get that from where you are, but if you can it is well worth a watch. There was quite a bit of footage that I hadn't seen before.

I’m 34 and I’ve been a Stones fan since my mom gave me her copy of Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers when I was 13. Your videos are amazing, the hard work you have done really shines through. Can I make a request? Could you maybe do a deep dive on some of the mid 60s stuff like Aftermath or Between the Buttons?! I would love to know more about the recording process on those. The boys are doing what they love, and I enjoy seeing the clips of Keith's face having fun and doing what he loves. I wish all the real Stones fans in the world could see these videos as they're missing out on the greatest documentaries of any band. Every friend I've recommended them to are blown away. Maybe I should start joining the Facebook fan pages and post one explaining how much more there is to it. I wonder which one would be the best start? I'm pretty partial to the SGs ones but I also think B&B part 3 is my favorite.

@@FlipSideCT The end of the doc is bittersweet. In a perfect world you'd get a good night sleep, Keith would give you a B12 shot in the ass and you'd go on in to ER. LOL. But I do thank you for all you have done. I hope you find more success with these as I said they are the finest I've seen on any band and they happen to be on my favorite band! What band has someone do hours upon hours of supreme work on them? Not even the Beatles or Elvis. Kudos!
The Godfather of documentaries, an EPIC! Loved the album breakdown and insights! Great rehearsal info and bringing the info out that is not common. Loved the Tosh and Happy T expose! Bearsville was cool info. The tour insight was just so insightful and with such a great flow. I also was so glad to see the photographer gratitude and those photos were wonderful! I was ar the Anaheim show with the shoe incident and that was amazing. Synchronicity like you've never seen After Mick said "why don't you all throw your bloody shoes" there was a slight pause and then literally a wave of shoes rose from the crowd. I was only 15 at the time and s huge Stones fan and my sisters took me and one of my friends to the show. It was very hot that day. Prince got booed off the stage. The last act before the Stones was the Outlaws. We waited three hours for the Stones to get on the stage. I don't know how it sounded from the board but the sound in the stadium was awful. Very bad, but I didn't I got to see Mick, Keith, Ronnie,, Bill, and Charlie and that was enough for me. The sound did not dampen my love for the Stones. I am still a big fan today 45 years later. In the 70's it was a huge deal when the Stones toured America because they only toured every 3 years. Also want to say thank you for your great in depth documentaries. I love all the details you put in. I can't get enough of that. Some Girls is my favorite Stones album and when I saw your 3 part documentary I was in heaven. Thank you!!!!

The sound in these big stadiums were not ready for prime time and it bounced all over. But they wanted to play big. I believe your Prince experience was in the 81 tour. As a recovered heroin and coke addict, I really never listened to Keith’s lyrics on Before They Make me Run- usually Stones bring up old memories of being high and playing my vinyl, but over time I’m able to come back and love every album again anew. And this time I read the lyrics as you talked about the tune. They hit me so hard. To live the high life, you deff live in the now of the first verses, then when you feel yourself slipping, you know the end is coming - verse two. Verse three is getting sober “I’ve had my fun” - I’m going to walk (clean up and get back to myself) before they make me (go to jail, death, be institutionalized)
As I was not the one in the crowed getting high, but others were, I can see how it relates to that time for you. Keith put it in words and did a remarkable job. I know Pink Floyd's lyrics Comfortably Numb hits home for many also.

@@FlipSideCT I tried to see the Stones live since the 81 tour when I was in high school. I could never get tickets. I finally saw them at Metlife Stadium in NJ after Mick’s heart surgery delayed it. It was great but bittersweet being Charlie’s last tour. I’m glad I got to see Charlie.

Good to hear that Kris, the GP line I mean. I have not heard anyone yet mention it. His songs just excite us everytime. I will say this, when I put on his last solo, Crosseyed Heart, I heard the first song and just said oh no, it sounds like the 1st two solos, and did not listen anymore I was so disappointed. Not till a bit a go, I pulled it and listened all the way thru......and it is brilliant. Same on me for not doing it the first time. thank you!!!! hope all is well!
I just spent two days locked in ( and medicinally medicating) with Peter Jackson 's Beatles 30:02 retrospective Get Back.
Two take aways.
I recommend it to any musician looking for unintentional inspiration. ( I'm not a musician but play peerless bad guitar).
Billy Preston looks so fresh, humble and innocent. A beautiful soul who just sparks up the band.
Then look at Billy with the Stones in 75. A major transformation. Lol.
The outrage he and Mick caused dancing together on stage was a hoot.

I think ‘Miss You’ was my kiwi wife’s acceptance of other Stones records. She grew up Auckland dance clubs in the 80’s and hated rock n’ roll till I begin educating her when we met in the mid 90’s. She knew ‘Miss You’ song from when she was a kid and it reminded her that she like some of their songs. Black and Blue was probably the first album I played for her, then Exile, Beggars, and Let it Bleed.
She probably is not alone and genius work by the Stones to bridge the gap. Cool that you turned her on, and cooler that she accepted it! thanks for sharing!

Once again an amazing job, even though I am also a student of this period I learned a few things. One of my favorite eras, when I was first introduced to the band. Although I was too young, I have friends who were at the Buffalo show, they did mention that the crowd was pretty rough and some people were upset about all the Some Girls songs, which made the atmosphere weird. My first bootleg was Garden State 78, black and white cover, great stuff. Thanks for doing this, I can wait for the next one.

Great documentary of a wonderful time in Stones history. Buffalo was my first Stones show and it was a hot one. They even stayed at the same hotel as we did and when they strolled through the open area at 2 am people went nuts. With a pool below several inebriated fans dove off the railing into the pool. Back then they allowed plastic containers in those days and we had gallons of warm vodka and pink lemonade to bring in the stadium. The only issue I recall was the first 10 rows flipping off Journey because we weren’t there to hear them. There was also some acrobatic acts, high wire and such as well as a skydiver. Quite the show it was. Thanks for the coverage.

So finally watched this. Steve, as usual, a hell of a job. I honestly was never a fan of Some Girls as a whole. I thought Miss You and Shattered were too played out. Before They Make Me Run is a hidden gem. Some Girls(the song) is just driven by that harp. Respectable is just straight out raw rock snd roll. It’s their answer to punk. Lies is another hidden gem. It’s not filler at all. I’m still not a fan of Beast and probably won’t ever be. The rest of the tunes are good, but I just don’t see the overall hype about the album as a whole. Maybe I think it’s missing something with Keith not being strong physically and the pressure of Toronto hanging over him.
I’ve heard some bootlegs from the tour. It may have had songs that were weak once in a while, but overall the energy is there. Charlie and Ronnie really push the others.

Hey Mike, thanks for your sharing your thoughts. Everyone approaches music their own way. The albums is not to be looked at a WHOLE, but listening and understanding all the parts that built it. Maybe a bit deep, but there are albums I just do not get like Pet Sounds or the band Can or Be Bop Jazz.....I wish someone would do some docs to help me! cheers

Regarding the 78 tour, I would hold Some Girls Live in Texas as one of the best live albums they ever put out. It is the last chance to hear them as a raw rock and roll band. The future tours had more musicians, backing singers, and all kinds of visual add ons. Those are fine, but the 78 tour shows the best work of Ronnie/Keith working together. Beast of Burden, Miss You and Imagination are some of my favorite live versions they've ever done.
you got it Justin. I just watched it with a buddy on a 10ft screen and DJ speaker system. Cranked, we walked away with a natural concert buzz that lasted a while. 100% correct it is one of the last real raw versions of pureness of just the band.
Mocambo is so incredible tho, esp when you think of what they were going through. When the chips are down tho the boys come thru, outrageous shows and all the band really firing woody esp playing his heart out not too much w just tasteful add ins if Billy and Ollie so it’s pretty stripped, Mocambo one of best ever live records

I really love how you edit the muzik, voice clips, pictures, and live footage altogether in a in-depth style 😁 I'm going to be learning how to be an editor myself. It's a skill that comes very naturally to me and our people in the entertainment biz tell me that it is one of the hardest jobs. But if you love and truly have a passion for your work, it's easy, and it's worth the time.

Yeah SOME GIRLS has this really great variety of songs on it and they aren’t all deadly serious too which gives it this relaxed space too. Like they were having some fun with it and it comes off very naturally and confidently . There’s this self assured feeling on it . There is also this thing on it that Keith talks about in his LIFE autobiography that he says he discovered is really important about music . I can’t remember the word he used .
Not to mention the ancient art of guitar weaving is on there big time.

Their cover of "Imagination" is the Best Cover Ever Done by ANY band. One of their stellar moments. It's the Rolling Stones at the corner bar as the Best Band in Your Town. Jagger owns it with "knoooooooow meeee", completely outdoing Eddie Kendricks.
So Tight, it's crystalline; so loose, it's hardly even there at times.
well.....you get it....yes indeed! It is mind blowing what they did and how. A very very under estimated tune by the public. I really think folks do not listen with a deep intention, but jnstead, just to hum along or dance to a tune is good enough.

Brian Jones was an adventurous multi-instrumentalist, who played sitar, dulcimer, marimbas, maracas, organ, harpsichord, oboe mellotron, theremin, slide guitar, sax and harmonica on early Stones classics. His influence on the Stones music starting with the "Aftermath" album was immense... He embellished songs such as "Ruby Tuesday," "Paint it Black" and "Under My Thumb," bringing textures and colors that added to the evolving Stones sound...His loss ended the Stones ventures into new areas musically, excett for periodic string arrangements.

I saw the Ft Worth concert (made into the dvd 'Some Girls In Texas'). It was the seventh and last small hall performance on the itinerary.
Possibly the tightest show of the 1978 tour, I really lucked out finding a $40 scalper tick. Also saw both their Ft Worth concerts in 1972.

I thought my eyes deceived me when I saw how long part 3 was. Was it Just My Imagination, Running Away With Me? After watching it I was surprised you didn't break it into 2 parts: Part 3 being the Some Girls lp, and Part 4 being the tour. But you are the expert with this so I bow to your knowledge and presentation.
This epic was your Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia, Gone with the Wind! It certainly was a labour of love for you, and a wonderful way for me to spend the band's 60th anniversary. I can't thank you enough for making that day well spent with the band, with one of their greatest periods and masterpieces.
NYC in the 70s was one of the most fertile times for artists, music, culture, sports, crime, etc, and the epicentre of this history with everything coming together in one chaotic and synergistic brew.
Your analysis of each song goes over my head since the only thing I can play is a stereo, but it's still enjoyable to hear what musicians like yourself say. I found this to be the case with the podcast you turned me onto as well, Under the Radar. What a find that was, and it's so nice to hear others like those two hosts appreciate the more recent music put out by the band. I find that anything after Some Girls is overlooked even when Mick and Keith still can write some incredible tunes that should garner more attention and radio play.
I too love When the Whip Comes Down. It's quite the rocker.
If others took the time to listen to Some Girks, they would stop calling it a disco album. While it is diverse, Some Girls has much more of a punk-y feel. As you say, the Stones out-punked, the punks. I didn't find the videos for them plain or undecipherable but more a showcase of the band; the 80s proved to be ground zero for unintelligible videos, fortunately not by this band. Isn't the director that you mentioned, Michael Lindsay Hogg, also behind a ton of other work by the Stones, like Rock and Roll Circus, and numerous other song videos in the 60s and 80s, never mind other bands?
The 1978 tour is a classic, one of their best, but not talked about in the same breath as the 1969, 1972-3 ones, or the colossal ones from 1989-90, 1994-5 etc. The music, energy, outfits all showcased the band without any frills, as it was stripped down. They were at their best, firing on all cylinders. I'm sure the shows at the El Mo had to light a fire under them, along with the possibility of Keith going to jail. I found it interesting that April Wine opened for the band at the July 4th show in Buffalo, since they had done that at the El Mo the yr before as well. It was ironic that Journey was there in Buffalo, as they opened for the Stones there in Sept 1981, when I was there.
Besides the Texas show on DVD and CD, I am lucky enough to have audio recordings of the Woodstock rehearsals, as well as the Passaic and Detroit shows, all of which are top notch. I'd forgotten that they had mixed up the venue sizes like they have with more recent tours.
Have you ever met Bill German? I'm not sure the Stones actually have a fan club now, but they did for a while in the 80s and I joined then. We got very detailed newsletters authored by Bill. When he put out his book, I made sure I got a copy, and it was delightful to read.
One thing I don't get, and have questioned for a few yrs, even before the pandemic shut things down, is the encore. It seems every band is supposed to do one, and quite frankly, this ubiquitous act has no meaning anymore. Not every concert/performance is worthy of one. Time to cut out the b.s. and only do them when a show is that good.
Enjoy the break from this for a while. You certainly have earned it, and no matter what album you turn to next, we will be waiting with excited anticipation. Take some time to relish the outrageous rampage the Yankees are on. There don't seem to be any challengers out there to take them on. They are a juggernaut with what seem to be no weaknesses.

Yes ML Hogg is the Stones guy for videos. With Buffalo being Toronto locale, it was still interesting April Wine opened, and yes with Journey. I was at 81 JFK also, and remember reading the Journey keyboardist did not care about the booing, he would have just loved if M&K carved their initials in his piano.

I suppose you could do everything together thinking it was going to be one long Part and then split them up into two parts, releasing them at the same time or a wk or two apart. I can only imagine how taxing that one was. So much info.
You are absolutely right about April Wine. There are many Cdn bands that never make it in the US, but they will have a following in bordering states due to Cdn airplay from our radio stations. April Wine eventually had the monster hit album Nature of the Beast in 1981, but at that point they wouldn't have been well known. The Stones may have also had a soft spot for them after the El Mo dates too. The fact Journey was there in 1978 surprised me. 3 yrs later they are much much bigger with the Escape lp.
Stones fans are not always very nice to opening acts. I was at the SARSAid show in Toronto in 2003 and then booed Justin Timberlake, which as he even said, he got, as he didn't fit with the rest of the lineup. I was at a Who concert in Toronto in the early 80s, I think on their last "final tour" and fans booed Joe Jackson and threw hot dogs at him.
At least you have connected with Bill German. That's basically as good as meeting him. Hopefully you can actually see one another face to face as two superfans should be in the same orbit.
The encore...as you get older you just recognize it's part of the show, and calculated. Oh to be young and not so jaded, haha

Yo Steve, hey man I’m jumping in a little late here as I had just got out of the hospital with two knee replacements. I was in a crummy mood, but when I got into my living room and the first thing I did was flip the tube on your some girls documentary part three of three popped right up. Well, they just put me in a great mood. I perked right up and started digging it right away! Wow, another masterpiece for sure. Just so informational and you always touch on so many different things. A lot of things that I always knew about but had forgotten about them over the years and also a lot of new stuff to me that I have never seen before. Steve, you got to keep doing these, man! Every time I watch one of your docs I just want to grab my “tele” and play a bunch of stone stuff in (A) Standard tuned or even an open (E) or (G). I love how you break the songs down. There’s plenty of just really cool bits and pieces that can be found in these recordings. You have the natural ability to be able to find them all! I also enjoyed all the great information and stories about the Peter Tosh era, and everything that was going on around that time. Excellent, just excellent coverage on the touring dates, the different venues, ticket prices for back then, The good things that happened as well as do not so good things that happened like deaths, injuries, sound, and equipment issues. Yeah Steve, I really don’t think you left anything out. A lot of other emotional stuff too, fans getting burned with faulty fireworks, torrential rains and downpours. Also, in all of this you also found all of the fantastic and great things about this time frame. The Bearsville recording studio and history of the whole town and different artists that recorded there was very, very interesting also! This stuff is all very important, Steve. Especially for our younger fan base geeks. They will really keep learning a lot from you. That’s why you gotta keep it going man!!! I know it’s an awful lot of hours and very hard work that you do, extremely hard work that you do. You just Gotta keep it going, Steve. I know we all enjoy this stuff and benefit from it too. Look man, whatever you do next I know it’s gonna be great. Whether you jump back into some early, early stones stuff or maybe even into later on type of stuff like Bridges to Babylon. You hit every nail on the head for your observations and enjoyment. It is these type of responses that make me smile as RnR'ers like your self get my point and dig it! Especially the picking up of the TELE, I hear that from others, and I FEEL IT also and knowing the power of Keith and that Open E or G jam.
Thank you for understanding the energy and passion that goes into this.....they both are super intense. I believe in time I will get to most of their stuff. I am not as much into doing the early albums. But will figure something out, and maybe pin point a few of my early favs.

From cover to cover one of the greatest albums recorded. As well received today as it was then. One of the best LP's ever, never to be out dated. Interesting to know that at the Texas Fairmont Hotel was Ronnie checked in as "R. Biggs", a clear reference to the 1963 Great Train Robber, Ronnie Biggs, who was still living as a free man in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) at that time. Biggs's son Mike even became a children's pop band star in Brazil with "Turma do Balão Mágico" (Magic Baloon Gang) in the early 80s.

Hey Flipside, when I saw "the making of some girls" I couldn't beleive someone made a documentary about my favorite album. A very detailed one at that. Thank you so much. I thought Mick played all the harmonica on that album but then found out it was a dude named sugar blue. Besides loving the Stones music I find them very interesting as people and interesting as a band. As a musician Im always keeping my ears open listening to them as to how they write . The one thing I learned is how they get their songs worked out. They get together and play the shit out of them! Wow, who would have thought the Stones had an old fashioned work ethic that if you worked hard it paid off. The last thing is let's be honest part of the reason the Stones didn't sound great is because they were high as fuck. It's funny because sometimes they wouldn't even all end together. However, I saw them after the some girls tour on the steel wheels tour. They had cleaned up their act by then and they sounded great and they still sound great today.

Steve, my friend and I were at the JFK Philadelphia show; camped out over night, the whole bit. The article mentions the overnight and early morning outside of the stadium being like a Vietnam battlefield with the cherry bombs, ash cans, etc., and that's accurate. There was definitely an air of violence and danger. When the gates opened the crush to get in was intense. It was a long day inside and the opening bands did not get a warm welcome, and Foreigner was not up to that level of show yet, a bit like a deer in the headlights and all the songs sounded like the record. When the Stones came on the crowd pushed forward and really got into it as I recall. I always remember the great sound and pulse of Charlie and Bill coming from those stadium speaker stacks. A lot of disappointment when there was no encore and beer bottles rained down at the stage and it seemed like all the instruments were destroyed. A memorable experience for sure. Thanks again for another great video.

My then-wife Chris worked for a law firm that represented the radio station that was co-sponsoring the Soldier Field concert on July 8, 1978. The Stones were staying at the Whitehall Hotel for two weeks and flying out to their Midwest concerts. So on July 3, Chris and others from the firm got to have lunch at the Whitehall with Mick, Ronnie, and Charlie. Mick asked her to go to Detroit but she told him she was married. He signed a cocktail napkin for her: “To Chris, the girl with the faraway eyes.” Mick also sent her two dozen roses at her office at the Sears Tower. Moreover, he reserved seats for us in the press section for the concert, so we did not have to get there early and fight the general admission crowd. We sat in front of actor Levar Burton and the Stones were outstanding that day. And Mick could not have been more generous to us.

Got a good friend in Virginia that also moved back from Japan and I’ll be happy to be in the same time as him as well. The new 1977 live stones album from the Toronto live club shows sounds good. I’d like to dub it the 1977 HOT PINK live album. Steve was Keith’s Toronto bust before that show or after that show. I can never remember. Seems like Keith’s bust was before that to me. That was the best analysis/ breakdown of Miss You I ever heard. And I always though Lies was one of the highlights, so I was surprised to hear some thought it might be filler. And for the sake of saying so, this documentary is great. They all are but after your contextualization of the time, place, and urgency through the first two, this one brought it all home. Man, I don’t know if you can appreciate your work as much as others do as you’re in the middle of it, but it’s great!
Wonderful comment....loved hearing that you enjoyed the breakdown. I take much pride in my listening style and observations. More so then many others. The headphones help plenty.
When we were younger we would listen to that cassette and keep rewinding it and analyzing. Maybe due being a Guitarist and knowing about studio work.
Before I did the docs, I would read posts and blogs and forums and then watch YT vids hearing the crap of folks knocking down albums and songs.
THIS IS WHAT PUSHED MY BUTTONS to move on the docs and explain to folks either you are not a fan / a casual or a deep fan. The hate / dislike would spread.
If you can not enjoy it ALL, then do not consider yourself deep fan is what I said. Also the 10-15 min album review is bullsh*t, that is unacceptable to me. I cringe.
The 3 part series is strategically thought out, and basically goes with the timeline of events.
I am able to separate myself from being the CREATOR to the FAN, and watch it and listen as one, and YES appreciate it! I forget plenty of what I do so watching it thru cleanly makes me smile as this is the format I and others like you wanted to see all along!

Thanks so much for all your time and effort with these videos, great insights into what they were going through during the different periods. I saw them for the first time a month before my eighteenth birthday at JFK, we drove down all night from Ottawa, Canada and ended up about fifty feet from the stage, I remember welling up with emotion when they came on. We later saw them in Oshawa for Keef's benefit concert, we camped out in line for three days in Toronto to get tickets. Ahh, youth!

Just picked up the Some Girls 2 cd special edition last week so perfect timing! My favorite Stones album since I first bought this in 78. Thanks for all your efforts!

I may be old, but I got to see ALL the Cool Bands. I was at the Oakland Coliseum Show On July 26th, 1978, and can confirm the helicopter that flew over the outdoor arena dumping Day-Glo ping ping balls and "Inflatable Ladies" on the crowd below, that day in honor of Mick's Birthday. I had previously seen them play in November 1969 (weeks before the California Altamont Concert) at the Boston Garden. They were young and powerful at that concert with Mick laying on the stage to slap his belt down hard when he sang "Well, you heard about the Boston -THWACK- lyrics of Midnight rambler. What a treat. I saw them play many times in between 1978 and now, too, because they almost always come to the San Francisco Bay Area while on tour. The last time however, I had to drive to LA to see them pay at SoFi in Inglewood. My all time favorite concert was at Desert Trip in Indio, CA in October, 2016. {6 bands three nights Friday - Bob Dylan & The Rolling Stones, Saturday - Neil Young with promise of the Real and Paul McCartney & Sunday - Roger Waters & The Who.}. Of course, I really went to see the Stones play, the other bands were icing on the cake.
Thank you so much for sharing this! You got to witness some exceptional time periods and tours. It is jaw dropping to even think about the events and the visuals. We are grateful we have clips to back to bring it back and to show why they are the greatest. Witnessing Mick's 70's stage antics is what gave the shows the extra lift, it was amazing the alter ego his broke into on stage. A huge difference once the 89's tour started and he started his miming improve moves. Very jealous you got to see the 2016 show.....that was an ultimate package.
Yes!! Been waiting for this. Coming in at over three and half hours that must have taken a LOT of hardwork. Thanks so much for this. I will watch it over the weekend. By the way the BBC has released a great four part series on the Stones called My Life as a Rolling Stone. I don't know if you can get that from where you are, but if you can it is well worth a watch. There was quite a bit of footage that I hadn't seen before.

I’m 34 and I’ve been a Stones fan since my mom gave me her copy of Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers when I was 13. Your videos are amazing, the hard work you have done really shines through. Can I make a request? Could you maybe do a deep dive on some of the mid 60s stuff like Aftermath or Between the Buttons?! I would love to know more about the recording process on those. Also Satanic Majesties, I know it’s maligned as a Pepper ripoff but I love that album. Good show again and cheers!
