    Quick history note on the 911 "widow maker". I think the title was somewhat earned because of the handling of the cars. They had huge 80s turbos with tons of lag so people would hit the gas in a corner off boost and nothing would happen. Eventually when the boost would hit when they weren't ready and they would get scared and take their foot off of the gas and due to the rear engine weight balance this would trigger almost instant, non recoverable, oversteer and send the cars into poles, ditches, innocent bystanders. etc. (nerd rant complete)

    • @maximborodyuk3773
      @maximborodyuk3773 2 месяца назад +33

      Let's just say you should dig deeper than that.
      911 is inherently bad construction requiring very specific way of driving; they're more or less figured it out now - not so much in the 80's.
      Main reason was ultimate combination of absolute dumbass rear suspension and the fact that if you lift (not even after boost hit etc) in the corner while going at least a bit fast - you get yourself a crash no matter what (unlike other cars where you can catch it). Rear suspension was what starting to scare in the corner, than come the lift annnnd crash.
      Boost was part of that too; scenario you described was also taken place - but it was way more than that.
      Actually the problem with 911 when going fast is not oversteer, it's understeer. I suppose they were trying to fix that with this abomination of a rear suspension they used in the 80s-90s.

      Wow, reverse snap oversteer that even modern day ford cant compete with...
      Sorry, had to say that at least once today.
      As far as danger... Always figured the worst one would be a 959, dual turbos, one big one, one small one... No electronics... Sounds like something a just graduated lawschool guy/gal would crash and crash hard.
      Slow by modern standards but...
      Never driven one myself though...maybe one day.
      Saying you've gotten to drive an f40, 959, or original gt40... That would be a cool story to tell one day. Maybe bucket list dream at this point, but goals still nonetheless.

    • @joetroy2904
      @joetroy2904 2 месяца назад +8

      Non-recoverable oversteer literally doesn’t exist. A good enough driver can always counter oversteer as it’s happening.

    • @maximborodyuk3773
      @maximborodyuk3773 2 месяца назад +23

      @@joetroy2904 ehm good enough driver wouldn't do that mistake (abrupt lift off) to begin with.
      And I bet you don't know how violent it could be once you're going really fast :D
      Especially in a 80s shitbox (which 911 certainly was) with constantly changing toe and 60+% weight outside rear axle. Once you lift (and I mean complete abrupt lift like regular Joe would do out of fear) you're done.

    If a 70's 911 Turbo isn't a widow maker, I don't know what is! Those things are deadly, not only because of the massive turbo lag, but also the fact the whole car is a pendulum, with all the weight behind the rear axle. They used to put lead bricks in the nose of the car to compensate...

Even if medical issues prevent you from riding a normal bike, I've seen plenty of people having fun in 3 wheelers. I even once saw a guy who'd modified his Goldwing to drop small stabilizing wheels when slowing down, so you don't have to balance the bike until it's at a speed where it basically does it for you.

    The Gilera CX 125 is basically a Collectors Item. Gilera only ever made 1000 units of it for the whole World, it was only build for one year and the used prices really reflect that. If you happen to find one thats for sale prices are usualy around 12-15.000 Euros. It was powered by a watercooled 125cc two stroke engine that produced 31 HP and thanks to the aerodynamics it reached Topspeeds of over 160 KPH. It was also a really great handling bike with a weight of only 131 Kg. Luckily though Gilera also produced a more "Civilian" version of that bike with the same engine and similar weight, the Gilera Crono, which was built in way higher numbers and for a few years, with the last few years even using the same single sided rear swingarm of the CX and used prices for those are usualy around 2-3.000 Euros.

    IMO the F6500CS is kinda cool. I even wanted to buy one last year but decided to get a GS instead. It was very innovative for its time and much ahead of any japanese bike in its class. Also the CD player was the dumbest accessory to install in the 'hole where tank should be'. Other included helmet mount with a lock and various tankbags. It was also fuel injected, had ABS and belt drive. GL finding that in anything you can buy for this cash . BTW while it looks absolutely ugly on photos, in reality it's better.

    We have a couple of CX125s. The handling is just like a bike with conventional forks. Gilera did talk about developing the front end to fit the fork tube in the head stock. Complete nightmare to work on as the bodywork has to all come off to do many things (and the plastic goes brittle with age). Front brake line goes through the fork lower (makes it fun to put a brake line in place)

    No, the H2 was not a bored out H1, a completely different design. And if you have ever ridden a decent example, you would know that the they were not that bad to ride. Yes, they were a handful, but they actually had a descent power band that came on much earlier than the H1. The handling was not all that terrible and the main problem were the tires at the time. Also it was an extremely dependable motorcycle. I bought one new in 73 (worked at the dealership at the time) and wish I still had mine....but alas.

I have to say I really like the looks of BMW R1200C However never bought one as I rode it and thought it was so underpowered and sounds like a chirping sowing machine.

    The 930 Turbo WAS a widow maker. the massive turbo lag and the rear mounted engine often sent unexperienced drivers right into the next wall, tree or ditch. if you hit the acelerator at the wrong time in a curve you were sent flying. due to where the engine was located at, it was nearly impossible to catch the car again.

    Hehe, every 2T engine with a narrow powerband is called a death trap or widow maker. It's just the way a good 2 stroke works.

    The DN-01 makes sense if you're an older fellow who values comfort, you have an injury to your left arm/hand, you're capable and willing to part with the money, AND you intend to make use of its good lean angle. As it turns out, a buyer that matches that description exactly is a very small part of the overall market. It's no surprise it didn't sell well.

    Good(ish) list but easy to do a part 2. Some candidates:
    Moto-Shifty 900 (Fiat 126 car engine with a foot-operated H-gate gearchange in a motorcycle...)
    Bocardo (Peugeot car engine in a blobby touring bike with the fuel in the fairing. Company went bust and owner wanted by Interpol the last I heard)
    Creasy Voyager (Reliant car engine in a fibreglass-covered feet-forwards design that looked like a Portaloo on wheels)
    Suzuki RE5 ("simple" Wankel rotary engine with so much extra gubbins to make it work that it was heavier than the equivalent piston-engined bike)
    Aprilia Moto 6.5 (650 single roadster that looked like a plastic kettle, mainly because it was "styled" by Philippe Starck who was famous for designing plastic kettles)
    Yamaha GTS1000 (hub-centre-steering sports-tourer with no steering lock and a detuned FZR motor, all for the price of a FJ1200 PLUS an XT350)

    Of course, you have to remember that the H2 was actually an IMPROVED upgrade of the H1 with better suspension an brakes. 😮The only reason I survived my H1 back in high school was that the expensive spark plugs had a bad tendency to foul, reducing power. 🙄

    Funnily enough my dad literally almost died on a Kawasaki H2 Mach 4 back in the 70’s. He was in high school and full throttled it past some onlookers before losing control and flying straight into a corn field. Couple days in the hospital, months of recovery and one berating by my grandpa later, he was okay 👍

    The Kawasaki 750 H2 had a purple colour option when it launched in the UK, which lead to it being christened "The Purple People Eater" after the novelty monster song. One journalist (Mark Williams?) published a review of it which saw the immortal phrase " earth, sky, earth, sky, nurse" used in print for the first time.
    I used to regularly see a Honda DN-01 parked in my local town centre here in the UK for years after it's one-year production run, so somebody must have loved it. I quite like the way it looked, but the eye-watering superbike price for a warmed-over NT650 Revere engine (a bike so boring it was nicknamed the "Reverie") and the lack of sensible luggage options mde it a non-starter. I believe to this day that had it been cheaper it might have sold better.

    I considered a R1200C as my first big bike. Sorry, not sorry, but I like its looks. However, I realised it was incredibly underpowered for a bike of its weight. Not only that, but the tank is so wide and high it's like sitting down with a VW Bug between your knees.

    HI Eu motorcycle mechanic here. I had the pleasure of working in all of the bike's in this list except the bimota, hayabusa an black shadow.
    The CX was a prof of concept and give way to the cagiva fereccia C10, C11, C12 you can still see influence on the first Aprilias Rs 125 /250.
    The H2 was to fast for the time (chasis wise). M'I grand grand grampa had a vincent black shadow I'still have the manual same as the H2, Lorence of Arabia died on one of those.
    The C1 is Shite, and I work in a few of those here in BCN, but the F650CS is tank the second version without of the belt still runs, Rotax is Rotax.
    The DNO1 it's bad, but same concept as the CX now you have the Integra and X-ADV.
    And the BMW R1200C Is a sofa and prof of concept for the tele-lever suspension that you can find in a RT 1200 .
    So very USA point of view most of this bikes are grate, not with problems we have to admit, but not designed for the USA, we have Very diferent roads and uses for bikes here, for allot of us bikes are like cars for you so please take this in consideration, les hipe and more facts.

    That video sucks! Gilera CX 125 looks AWESOME, and Honda DN-01 is actually one of the best cruisers ever: it's comfortable (with a larger screen), reliable, easy to ride, looks cool. Owners love them! And, yes, it does have a CVT transmission, but it's unlike scooters - it doesn't have any belts and cones. It has a hydrostatic drive instead. Which makes an HFT transmission of DN-01 drop-dead reliable - unlike conventional CVTs that fails all the time. Worth mentioning.

    I agree with most people about the Gilera CX 125,It looks cool to me, and an earodynamicly clad 125 can be quite fun to ride, I've been riding a Ducati 851 for ages now, but i wouldn't mind a lighter bike every now and then..
    The BMW Scarver has some handy features.. Like the luggage Compartment where you'd expect a fuel tank.. try to take anything bigger than a cheese sandwich on a modern sportbike..
