      I like to think that the only time Ryan is on the internet is when he's working on a video. Kind of like how the mechanics are clones, except, instead of being a clone, he only exists on the internet for videos, and outside of that, there's no proof of his existence. He just goes to his home dimension and does other dimensional things

    People, remember the Darmstadt machine only tests abrasion on a "calibrated concrete block" that is smoother than most asphalt or chip+seal surfaces, with a (IIRC) 4cm drop. While the RPM might "math-out" to 45/70/120kph, Darmstadt and EN17092 does not make for a good abrasion testing standard. EN13595 (Cambridge), the older standard, was lobbied away/discontinued (depending on who you ask) because it was too tough to pass, and it replicated asphalt better, with 60 grit sandpaper. A simple look at Australian govt's MotoCAP testing (again, Cambridge) shows many AA/AAA fabrics having abysmal abrasion resistance, mainly textiles.
    This also doesn't cover the fall + slide mechanics of motorcycle crashes. Many low-tenacity textiles burst or rip open from the initial impact, exposing the meat underneath. No standard has included drop + abrasion (yet), but Darmstadt CANNOT test for it, while Cambridge can.
    In short: Ryan, saying AA/AAA equals a "rolling speed" is, IMO, a sign you should read up on those standards (and the associated physics) more. For all others, keep in mind your moto clothing is a very good step in the right direction for protection, but bringing EN13595 back is the best way we could get ratings that actually show how protective our gear is against sliding, instead of the current "smoke and mirrors" 17092.

    • @pamvarnsverry2444
      @pamvarnsverry2444 7 месяцев назад +11

      I tend to agree with your comments - sadly the standards are never going back to EN13595 any time soon ( it suits way too many manufacturers to leave alone ) keep in mind that it was a voluntary standard at first the complaints came when it was made mandatory, which generally means easement. Australia bought into the EN13595 standard that existed at that time 2012??? if they had waited they might be saddled with EN17092 as well - but change costs. It is good to have the comparison. The UK government has an ideal opportunity to alter/ revise the standard in the UK - they won`t it costs to much and requires a will that is lacking at the moment. 1984 - 2024 40 years have passed and we appear to be going backwards for the next generation of motorcyclists protection!!!!

    IIRC, one of the criticisms of the EU rating system is that you have to declare which test you want to pass before you take it.
    If you say AA and only pass A, you get nothing. If you put something that could pass AAA in for the A test, you still only get A.
    So, AA doesnt mean "45 - 70," it means "we were only confident enough to pay for the 45 test."

    The vents on the face shield are not for clearing fog from the face shield. If you open the face shield, you'll see small ducts behind where these vents sit. To my knowledge, those vents are guided toward your temples since there are a lot of veins close to the skin there, which enhances the body-cooling effect of the ventilation. This was implemented on Arai helmets to avoid drilling holes in the forehead of the helmet for ventilation, because the forehead is a high risk impact area and holes in the shell at the forehead reduce safety.

    Comfort is pretty important. Maybe another obvious point, but if you have technically better gloves, but also have a slightly less protective comfy glove, you'll find yourself choosing the latter on the whole. Layering is great, but it can be hard to layers right to retain system comfortable e.g. your outer layer has to be big enough to enclose everything you're packing underneath, so you should generally size up there (not excessively so) and work backwards.

    a word of caution about Vancouverites: whenever they imply that Vancouver gets a lot of rain, what they really mean, is that Vancouver gets a lot of rainy days (during the winter). What they don't say, is that while it rains all day, it BARELY rains. They usually get some thin and slow rain. Therefore waterproof stuff might actually work there. In places where you get heavy rain for a few hours before a clearing, it never does for more than a few minutes. Cheers

    I like the look/style of NBT clothing - they've got hoodies and flannels with armor pockets, jeans that look reasonably stylish (more modern than my taste), but in general, add gloves (which they sell), boots (which they don't) and a helmet, and you're ready to go. It's certainly not cheap...but, reasonable compared to the big name brands.

    I bought an XD4 a month or so ago. It was a bit too warm for my first off-road trip and the speakers weren't in quite right so I couldn't hear music. The lid was very quiet though. Even with goggles.
    I used it on the road last week and there was zero lift from the peak and the road noise was minimal. Even up 100mph.
    Redid the speakers and they were far better. The padding is just too thick for loud music but that's a plus in reality I guess.

    Hello Ryan, i am following your channel for anything motocycle related, without owning a bike (but wanting to). Now that i got my licence, i am looking at gear. And it is steep learning curve. I feel like any gear is so hard to choose. The fit, the quality. Its so hard and time consuming. I just read up on jacket tests. And well i think (correct me if i am wrong). A rated jacket, does not require any abrasion rating in zone 3. To me it seems that if you slide in not the most statistically best way you can be fucked as the garment will disintegrate before giving any protection. This can be remedied by choosing garments, that have the same material and same reinforcements in it entirety.
    But next thing is super scary, EC 17902 apparently doesnt test for initial impact resistance of the fabric. So garment could be torn to pieces on initial hit, offering no protection because of it, despite ratings. It would slide well, if you get to that, but no one really knows, apparently.
    Or is it that i am looking too much into this????

    As a teen , my Yamaha enduro with a 2 gallon gas can tied on the back was my "adventure" bike and my equipment was jeans , mulehide boots and an old jacket I didn't mind sliding down the dirt in . OF course , that was more than a half century ago . Modern "standards" are just a way to keep beureaucrats employed and sound important . If your video had been a bit longer , you would have been 8' 6'' tall with a 100 inch chest and yard long dong .Keep up the great videos .

    • @NONO-hz4vo
      @NONO-hz4vo 7 месяцев назад +1

      That said the bikes I ride now are capable of far greater speeds and the gear I have is far safer to crash in. The standards may or may not be the reason but at least the technology has come a long way in terms of safety.
      Lucky I have not had to test out the gear in real life but my friend tested his gear out at 120kph and walked away with almost no injuries. Kevlar pants, jacket and a helmet he keeps up in his garage as a reminder.

      @@NONO-hz4vo No arguement from me that good gear is a good thing , but companies should make safe products because nobody will buy shoddy crap , not because the Government forces them into it . Regs cause companies to produce products just good enough to pass . I know , difference between a perfect world where people have scruples and reality .

    Ryan’s opinions are the gold-standard for riders.
    Europe literally spends millions on supposed safety testing.
    Manufacturers spend millions to meet those standards.
    Consumers spend millions purchasing those standards.
    Ryan says “Meh.” ?
    We say “Meh.”
    Why? Ryan has earned our trust and respect. We, with good reason over a long period of time, believe what Ryan says and appreciate what goes in to what he says. Why? Intelligence, common sense, commitment to excellence.

    Most normal riders will have accidents (crash, drop, fall) at low speed, where ANY sort of armor or protection will save you from weeks or months of chronic pain. Especially when your 30s are behind you.
    Abrasion and protection over 70kph is another issue. If you crash at speed where armor has no effect, 98% chances are you are the cause of it anyway.

    Oh, and about abrasion resistant garments; Motoport Kevlar. Stiff when new, but worn in are great. I've gone down in the Aero Mesh II's jacket/pant combo and the Kevlar barely showed any marring at all. Only a slight scuff at the initial impact point, and no sign of the long slide I took when I went down in Italy on a tour. Unmarked, and unhurt. Yes, the armor was in place. Aero Mesh with waterproof base under is the bomb down to temperatures I would switch to ski gear and go skiing.
