This is incredible... if anyone of you has ever tried blowing a jug, she/he will know what I'm talking about... these musicians have an incredible precision and virtousity on their instruments, an incredible understanding of leading a bass line and combining bass and higher registers... ...respect!
Well, a lot of music from to-day is terrible in many ways in my opinion. I admire music from long ago, as well. The only music artists that I like is the Brian Setzer Orchestra.
I'd LOVE to meet a jug player or percussionist or even another guitarist who'd like to play this stuff but I've yet to meet anyone. (I play harmonica, banjolele & guitar) And if musicians are that hard to find, finding gigs would be a nightmare...
no youtube,no instagram..and even after 100 years these fellars get 215k views ! i can not imagine same about any today pop star after 100yrs..mark my words
so sad that they didnt catch on record such musicians as Blake , Fuller , Lemon and others. But this is of course an amazing clip , thank you very much!
very nice tks for rescue document film, because is a music history american folk rural...I am from México, City and love blues rural. Please upload more as that. Congratulations!
This is fantastic! It is so nice to see video footage of this type of thing. I have a lot of great recordings of Memphis Jug Band, King David's Jug Band, Mississippi Sheiks, and others of the era/genre; though I have never seen video. Thank you so much for posting! This is truly a masterpiece.
this is beyond precious ! This is what we lost to paper money, sugar, oil & cars for everyone. This, and so many other precious things like Time...that are too painful to list here. nevertheless...this is a treasure !
Is that really how they lived back then. Just carrying a folding bed and just travel around just jamming? What an awesome life if that's true. I bet people called them hobos too. Which I guess is technically true but that sounds like a wild ride to me. I bet those fuckers saw some shit back then.
@Zenny1410 wow, Im glad someone is including jug band music in a history of jazz class. all to often jazz history class' seem to teach as if jazz started in the 1940's. Im glad someone with the power to teach is hip to reality for a change.
Gus Cannon is not in this video, it's Whistler's Jug Band. They were one of the first jug bands to record, in 1924, although this film is from 1930. By the way, two members of the Rooftop Singers travelled to Memphis to find Cannon and make sure he was registered to receive royalties, so it's not accurate to say they "stole" his song.
That is Gus Cannon. Remember the song Rooftop singers did called "walk right in"? They stole it from cannon and his jug stompers. The films sound was possible because of the Vitaphone process back in the late 20's
@cameronjacobsUF you mean devolved? that guitar they're using is a sophisticated spanish instrument. Music of the 20th century takes comparitively little skill to produce compared to music of the 18th or 19th centuries
I was reading about Mr. Whistler. They said that he often passed for white because of his European features, and he was welcomed into several different white society gatherings because they thought he was a white man in blackface.
lyricstranslate.com/en/whistlers-jug-band-folding-bed-lyrics.html Folding Bed Went downtown to have a little fun Bought myself a razor and shiny guns Carried it home, laid it on the shelf Got so doggone hard just to get it myself Come on out of my foldin' bed, I believe I'm gonna tear it down (Tore it down) Slats and all (Tore it down) You make my baby squall (Tore it down) Baby come on Don't take no time at all Come on out of that foldin' bed, I believe I'm gonna tear it down I went home about four o'clock Knocked on the door and found it locked Round to the window and I took a peek A sheik there fast asleep That'll only be my foldin' bed, ah heh heh heh (Tore it down) Slats and all (Tore it down) You make my baby squall (Tore it down) Get with her I believe it won't take no time at all Come on out of that foldin' bed, I believe I'm gonna tear it down

A whole year someone finally answered me?? 😂 i was just askin cus i tried blowin in a jug and it didn't sounded nothing like that. It barely made even little a toot

They listen to each other.
The jug is todays most overlooked musical instrument
Even the lowly kazoo is popular by comparison...! ;)
Why doesnt music sound this good anymore? Even if theyre a jugband nobody plays like that guy on the banjo mandolin anymore, absolutely incredible
Still watching this entertaining video over and over again. Very enjoyable.
So bad ass! Wish there were more of these bands around today.
Well, a lot of music from to-day is terrible in many ways in my opinion. I admire music from long ago, as well. The only music artists that I like is the Brian Setzer Orchestra.
@@kevinceniceros1690 He's not a real Orchestra Swing man, he jumped on that when Private Ryan came out .
The Jug will live forever and ever!
There are still so many of bands like this we just don't know about them
I'd LOVE to meet a jug player or percussionist or even another guitarist who'd like to play this stuff but I've yet to meet anyone. (I play harmonica, banjolele & guitar)

incredible rhythm banjo! I could listen to a LOT of this stuff... ^..^
So could I. I also like Boogie-woogie and Blues.
the predecessor of funky chicken guitar on funk music.
Me too.
That would almost certainly be Willie Black on banjo.
Isn't it a banjo-mandolin though? Not saying that's one cent less cool.
Only in America. Thank you.
wow...thats stunning! music! as its meant to be!
Epic top hat spin at 0:35!!!!!!
Flip o the hat n a flip o the jug
I could listen to this stuff all day... So I think I will!

When I first heard this I thought there was a trombone in the mix. I love jug music.
Great artists! I love the music, and scenery too...absolutely wonderful!

Glad someone had the foresight to preserve this. Such great music.
Priceless footage. Thanks.
Unbelievable film, priceless capture of fabulous artists and their genre.
Absolutely priceless....

What fun - love the top hats and jug spins!
Ladies and Gentlemen, give it up for Mr. Danny Glover on the tenor banjo!
The real deal, can’t get more honest than this.
Great video thanks for sharing

Smile of the day, Yeh
Amazing performance! And the way the sound is synchronized with the video, that was cutting edge technology at the time. Well done.
absolutely wonderful stuff this video really was pure joy to watch.
I can't believe what im seeing i was just expecting a recording

Is that Danny Glover on banjo and backup vocals!?!?? MMMA-HAN, talk about aging gracefully!
Divino e maravilhoso, são bons demais, imaginem hoje, com os instrumentos atuais o que fariam. bons demais. maneco - Porto Alegre-RS -Brasil.
The fart solo is amazing.
Now this is some cool shit! The fcuking bosses! Very nice!
The original spike Jones and Lonnie Donigan Skittle group!
This is real good.
Gus Cannon and Will Shade were the lions of the Memphis jug band sound, but Whistler's is pure Louisville.
juste fabuleux
Estupendo, muchas gracias por compartirlo.
excellent
Yep still a banger

is this the origins of Old Crow Medicine Shows "Tear it Down"?
old crow medicine show did this song. atleast a version of it called "tear it down"
Slash of the Jug
This is fantastic, where did you find it? Thanks for posting it.
He gets co-writing credit on the 45 that was released in 1963.
Best comment I ever read. I can't stop laughing.
A.J. Maciejewski wich one?
i always assumed you play a jug by blowing across the top kinda like playing a flute. but this isn't what i expected.
I wish there were subtitles

Bed slats 'n all?
Fabulous!
Love it!

its funny how in one shot the center jugger is in the middle, then it cuts to him in a completely different position

Love the woman at the 1 min mark in the background going WTF is this shat?
This sounds like I feel like I'm fixin to Die by Country Joe and the Fish
I have a question....why is there no video of Robert Johnson anywhere? He was definitely around during this time as well.
the guitarist looks like a young bill Cosby and the banjo player looks like Danny glover (the president in the movie 2012)
when the farting kicks in is the best bit.

Folding Bed
Went downtown to have a little fun
Bought myself a razor and shiny guns
Carried it home, laid it on the shelf
Got so doggone hard just to get it myself
Come on out of my foldin' bed, I believe I'm gonna tear it down
(Tore it down) Slats and all
(Tore it down) You make my baby squall
(Tore it down) Baby come on
Don't take no time at all
Come on out of that foldin' bed, I believe I'm gonna tear it down
I went home about four o'clock
Knocked on the door and found it locked
Round to the window and I took a peek
A sheik there fast asleep
That'll only be my foldin' bed, ah heh heh heh
(Tore it down) Slats and all
(Tore it down) You make my baby squall
(Tore it down) Get with her
I believe it won't take no time at all
Come on out of that foldin' bed, I believe I'm gonna tear it down
Most deep south thing ever captured on film

「ブルース&ソウルレコード」に紹介されていて知りました。シルクハットの男が面白い仕草をします。
Hi ! I would like to use this cut on a live show (little venue, about 30 personne). Do I have to paye ? How much and who ? Thank You
Anyone know where in Louisville this was filmed?
According to jug band music historian, Michael Jones, the band was from Louisville, but this footage is of them out in Shelby County, KY.
I'm not trying to offend anyone but do you think it's because they have bigger lips?
😂 no dude
A whole year someone finally answered me?? 😂 i was just askin cus i tried blowin in a jug and it didn't sounded nothing like that. It barely made even little a toot
Is that an Alan Lomax recording?
No.
this is how hiphop was born!
In between levels in Super Mario Bros 2😁
lol. at 0:43 a woman walks in the shot in the background at stares at them like wat the fuck?!?
what's my mans saying in the intro??
