Dating to the 1940s, this short film presents "The Jug Band", a group which was better known as the "Dixieland Jug Band" or the "Henry Miles Jug Band" after its leader, Henry Miles of Louisville. Miles worked in an orchestra but could also play the fiddle, guitar, violin, and mandolin. Oh and did we mention he could sing and dance too? He is probably most remembered for his fiddle playing with the Ballard Chefs (1929-1932). The group performs "I Had a Dream Dear" (;27), "Shine" (1:57) and "Who's Sorry Now" (4:23).
Not much is known about the band shown here, other than that they were from Louisville. Henry Miles is the violinist and was still playing in Louisville (and elsewhere) with his jug band into the '80s and died in 1984. Noted music historian Mark Cantor says he believes the lineup with Miles is Bee Ferguson, rhythm guitar; Rudoph Thompson, jug; James Hardy, spoons, and George Stewart playing the four-string tenor Dobro.
Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Absolutely brilliant clips. Thank you for letting us see them
These guys are proof that when you have style, you can make anything cool. I wanted to give this a try myself. I don't have any actual instruments. So I tried the spoons but wanted to jazz it up. I tried forks and I quickly got the point why they are not used. Then I tried knives. Perhaps I should have started with butter knives because steak knives were not such a great idea. The butter knives worked much better but as my wife was quick to point out, it's best to wipe the butter off of them first. I did have one final idea but my wife said there was no way she would allow me to spit all over her jugs. I don't think she understood what I was talking about. All in all, it was... different. 🤔 😄
that was stupider than jupiter.😵
I love that sound they got in the old days on the guitar. That down, down, down, down, sound. It looks a lot easier than it is I assure you.
Thanks, Periscope and that's what's called flat getting ON with it! Thanks again!

HOLY CRAP! That's Rudolph Thompson (of Whister's Jug Ban fame). This is INSANE! How do I get a copy without the tiemcode?
Ole Jazz Lips. This blew my mind. If this was out when we started Steel City Jug Slammers things woulda been alot easier! 😵🖤
Where did you acquire these talented "cats" long before my time but Wowza ! Can they play! My partner has spoons but I don't think they'd let him in! And it seems so easy- amazingly talented- I wish street's still had talent like this instead of road rage. Thanks, made my day better! Namaste
I play/sing in the Yerba Buena Jug Band in San Francisco where we keep trad jug band music alive!
Erich Sylvester
I was playing in the pH Phactor Jug Band in SF in '66... & I'm happy to hear that Something is still going on... 👍🏽 ^..^
@@johnbrowne2173 Thanks for your praise. I too have been playing in a jug band since the 60s.
Yes, but you got your start in jug band music with the Cincinnati Dancing Pigs, still alive and kicking after > fifty years in Porkopolis. I'll bet you'd love to get your mitts on a resonator tenor guitar like that!
Wow! That guy can dance! Amazing! This whole thing is amazing.
The Jug was a prop, a kazoo was played for the jug parts. So audio and video were recorded in separate sessions.
Well.. now & then.. but there's some actual jug playing, too. ^..^
I've been playing jug and kazoo for 50+ years and don't hear anything sounding like a kazoo, only sounds common to an accomplished jug player.
@@Porkov From around 3.30 there is kazoo. There is of course a lot of jug too, very good jug, but it's not all in sync with the images; see around 1.45 for where he misses the mime.
That's talent.
Absolutely wonderful!
The performance is brilliant and I just love it, but I am quite surprised to realize the audio take doesn't match the video take, so they synched in a very accurate (but not perfect) way. It's easy to see when the singer is laughin' in "shine" but his mouth is closed (2:46) . He nailed the spoon solo though!
One of the BEST THINGS I'VE EVER WATCHED.
Love it, love it, love t. Thanks Bob for posting this. Talent plus. Love the lead and rhythm guitar. The lead guitar sounds really "Djangoesque". You just don't find talent like that on the mainstream anymore. It's all noise, mumbled words, exploding stages, and numerous light shows. I guess that's the way they can make up for the lack of talent.

Yes! Yes! Yes!
No way! I love Dixieland jazz! Keep it coming ❤☕
That's entertainment!
Finally! An instrument made for my skill set
Such talent. Such nice suits. Guitarist channels Django.
really... AND he's doing it on a 4-string! ^..^
@@johnbrowne2173 Yes - and it looks like a home-made instrument.
@@homzymusic That is a National Resophonic Tenor guitar, and I'm told it is actually Tampa Red playing.
unbelievable. thanks much
Hi Im wondering if you had any more details on where and when the clip came from, This line up operated from 1949 to 1966 but wondering if they were filmed later because of increasing interest in the 60s
A lot of positive ☺️
And tap dancing, one of the first Dobro guitars, is worth money wherever it is🐾...
Looks like a National with a biscuit bridge. Tenor scale. Maybe.
@@lewiemcneely9143 possibly a National mandolin?
@@dkaatz QUITE possibly!
@@dkaatz Not with only four tuning pegs and that long neck. It's a tenor guitar.
@@journeybear Like one of the Delmore Brothers played.
I have three thoughts. That was amazing. I definitely would have dropped that jug on the first flip. and is that Michael Jordan's father playing the guitar?
excellent
Cool!
Who are the guitar players ?
Original americano
I want to BE like that dude in the middle, I'm not kidding at all. I love playing the spoons but OMG HE PUTS ME TO SHAME! THAT'S a True Performer.😍👨🏻🎤
Off his teeth!
Jug plsyer is Rudolph Thompson, who played with Burford Threlkeld's Whistler's Jug Band.
See here.

Tore it up man 🤣🤯🤯🤯
What is the name of the jug player please ?
I think it's Rudolph Thompson. If it is, he was principal jug player in Whistlers Jug band, way back when.
This is what the Fortnite emote “Jug Band” is based of off
Va bien el negocio? Llamo a la caballería!
Hi Im Henry and I play the jug
My GOD those men can dance.
Sorry I HONESTLY CANT AFFORD THE GREAT CHANNELS ON YOU T. WORTH EVERY CENT- talk to the govt. about disability, social security, living wage- I wish you well.
These guys aim to give you your money's worth -- smoking. Would what appears to be a homemade four string steel resonator be considered a bass guitar? It looked like it had sixteen frets.
That’s a tenor guitar made by the National company
They called him "Bruised Thighs Muldoon", lol
Way better than hip hop
Idont hear the jug
The spoons performance and tap dancing are fantastic. But the sound of the jug is horrible.
