  • Rare 1943 Video of Sol Hoopii playing Hawaiian Steel Guitar and singing well known gospel songs. Phil Kerr on the piano. On the liner notes of a Sol Hoopii CD, historian and author T. Malcolm Rockwell writes "In 1942, Sol made a 12-minute fill short called Musical Momemnts with Sol Hoopii, which was shown primarily at Christian Bible Schools. Produced by the C.O. Baptista Film Mission, it was billed as "testimonies and musical selection played by the Hawaiian guiatarist Sol Hoopii" and featured Sol and accompanist Phil Kerr on piano. Unfortunately, no copies of this film have surfaced to date." THIS IS THAT LONG THOUGHT TO BE LOST FILM! More Sol Hoopii music available at www.marcrecordsmusic.com

    This is like finding the Holy Grail of Hawaiian steel guitar playing, played by the master of the instrument himself, Sol Hoopii. Incredible playing, the harmonics, the phrasing, the sheer talent, is awesome!

    Mr. Hoopii came to our church and gave a concert in 1950 in Tulare Calif.
    I fell in love with the steel then and have been playing once ever since.

    He was amazing, his life story would be good movie... plenty chance for good scenes, like when he and his pals sneaked onto a ship to USA and got caught but played for the passengers and they chipped in for their tickets...

    Glad for Sol if he was happy to have gone down this path, but can't help but notice the labotomised vibe compared to the vibrancy of his previous years.

    My teacher Richard Choy knew Sol. Real good friends. My teacher also repaired his steel guitar. My teachers genius was to take Sols music and put it on paper! He told me, he could teach me how to play likevSol.

    At about the time this recording was made, The Stamps Quartet School Of Music opened it's two week course at the Bethel Temple Church on Jefferson Ave. in Dallas Texas. The Steel Guitar teacher at the school was William Vickery. He had many students and formed a string band to play at the Wednesday evening services. Rev. Albert Ott was the head minister. My Aunt Julia Francis Hicks and her son Jimmy played in the band along with my sister, who played bass, and myself. I played steel along with several others. Jimmy played standard along with Mr. Vickery. One service we were amazed to be entertained by Mr. Sol Hoopii. He was such an inspiration to us all. I continued playing and teaching for many years and one of my students later was inducted into the Texas Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame.

    Whtat joy to find this. I have loved Sol Hoopii's steel playing for most of my life and now today I have finally been able to see him in action clearly for a complete performance. My Great thanks goes out to Greg Tutmarc for providing this video. This film should receive a high quality transfer to digital for preservation. I personally would love to have a DVD of this.

    @jmacbops I take it if he was playing an interpretation of Gospel music, that he was Christian. If he was Christian, I doubt he took offense but rather was happy to be praisng the Lord.

    There isn't all that much on youtube, you really want to look for some CD's like "Master of the Hawaiian Guitar, Vol. 1 and Vol 2" - "Sol Hoopii - King Of The Hawaiian Steel Guitar" or "Sol Hoopii in Hollywood 1925"

    Wonder what his tuning is? Probably in open G or D like most Hawaiian music.

    • @INDYOSKARS
      @INDYOSKARS 4 года назад +2

      Looks like D when he plays those outer strings simultaneously and slides them upwards.
      Or but then again the old standard Hawaiian tuning G (low bass) also had the same strings
      meaning the same D sixth and D first.

    I wonder how Sol felt about the way the pianist pronounced his name. The piano dude calls him "HOPE-ee." Most haole (mainlanders) pronounce his name "HOO-pee." But I was told by a native speaker that in Hawaiian his name is pronounced "HOO-oo-PEE-ee." Regardless, Sol Hoopii was a great musician!
