Frank’s character can be quite unappealing throughout the show - but one thing I love about him is when he’s defending his daughter-in-law. He really did some respectable things for Deb, even when Ray was being an idiot or even when his own lodge buddies were acting derogatory towards her. The beauty part is that, according to Doris Roberts, (Marie) - Peter Boyle (Frank) was actually, very much, the opposite of the character of frank; a true gentleman, very respectful, and a pleasure to work with. Although both their characters were largely the reason for so much of the tension and problems in the family on the show- they were truly great at what they did and were phenomenal in their roles.
She did, countless times. But because Marie was so stubborn and controlling it made things harder for everyone especially Frank and Robert (who lived with her) to really pick sides without risking starvation. So by that logic, Debra was viwed as the problem as well.
Debra was a downer. Least favorite ELR character. Yes Marie was a nuisance most the time but Debra often overreacted and she was abusive to Ray on several episodes. I don’t care for her in general.
What a great cast this was: Doris Roberts & Peter Boyle RIP Patricia Heaton really nailed her character; great writing & great comedic acting. Brad Garret & Ray Romano. 😹
Alot of people say Debra is horrible to Ray and doesn't deserve him but let's take in the fact of what Debra has had to deal with between Ray's parents and Ray himself. It would drive anyway crazy!
My late daughter in law told me one time, "You're just like Raymond's mom!" I didn't know who she was referring to at the time, but later worried about her perception or my true personality!!! LOL We really loved one another, though. Just like Marie and Debra!

In that first segment, I was surprised that Deborah was claiming that Ray said his mother was a saint of a mother. He had plenty of complaints about his mother! He thought they were nuts to move next to his parents, but Deborah was naïve.
Does Debra ever say "yes" to Ray? That is not the answer to all of their problems, but it might bring them closer together. She usually feels overwhelmed by all of her responsibilities, and Ray feels rejected by the person he wants to be with. Drop the kids off with Marie and Frank on a Saturday evening, check into a nice hotel, and be with eachother for the night. Maybe do this every couple of months. 2 things are true at the same time. 1. Debra's character in the show is a mess and would not be a good partner. 2. Debra was clearly driven to that state and kept there by living next to an insane asylum of inlaws.
Good sitcom. In common is that in most of them people never take their shoes off after entering the house and never wash their hands. In Croatia/Europe these gestures are essential as a hygiene and respect. We have slippers and towels for our guests.
