Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is a platformer battle royale game developed by Mediatonic and published by Devolver Digital. It released for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4 on 4 August 2020. The game draws inspiration from game shows like Takeshi's Castle, It's a Knockout and Wipeout, and children's playground games like tag and British bulldog. Fall Guys received positive reviews from critics, who praised its chaotic gameplay and visual appearance
Up to 60 players compete in matches with battle royale-style gameplay.Players, represented as jellybean-like figures, move around a three-dimensional playing field, with additional moves such as jumping, grabbing/climbing, or diving to assist gameplay. The aim is to qualify for subsequent rounds by successfully completing each of the randomly selected mini-games. Certain mini-games involve running towards a finish line at the end of the map, while others add elements of teamwork.On every mini-game, obstacles appear around the map for added complexity.Players who are too slow or who fail certain requirements for a mini-game are eliminated. On the final round, the remaining few players compete in a final match with a randomised mini-game designed for a smaller player size. The winner of the match is the last player standing.
Using an in-game currency, "Kudos", players can purchase cosmetics and emotes for their character to show off in-game. Players obtain Kudos by completing matches and get "Crowns" (the premium currency) by winning. Some of the costumes are of characters from different games, such as Gordon Freeman from the Half-Life series or Jacket from Hotline Miami. The game supports microtransactions for the purchase of additional in-game currency.
The conception of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout began when Mediatonic was discussing another project in January 2018. One member, lead designer Joe Walsh, made a throwaway comment that it reminded him of game shows such as Takeshi's Castle and Total Wipeout.He drew from that inspiration to create a pitch document for what would become Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. Originally titled Fools' Gauntlet, Walsh's pitch featured 100 players competing in a battle royale composed of physical challenges. Creative director Jeff Tanton, while initially skeptical that creating another battle royale game would be successful, was quickly convinced of the game's potential, and forwarded Walsh's pitch to Mediatonic's founders.
Tanton and Walsh then began working on a pitch deck for the game. For the pitch deck, principal concept artist Dan Hoang created images featuring colorful, bean-shaped characters racing on an obstacle course in the sky. Tanton explained that Hoang's character designs helped shift the focus of the game away from the obstacle course itself, to the characters. With the pitch deck completed, Tanton pitched the game to 10 different publishers at the 2018 Game Developers Conference. After Devolver Digital agreed to publish the game, development began six months later.
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout was announced at E3 in June 2019and was released on 4 August 2020 for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4.Prior to release, it was announced that Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout would be free for PlayStation Plus members during the rest of August.
The biggest problem with Fall Guys' initial release was the SEVERE lack of content, and this went on for SEASONS even after the game "died". Mediatonic was a small company that barely ever released updates, so understandably the game got repetitive and stale very fast. However, because of Epic we're now getting weekly massive updates just like Fortnite, filled with new map variations, events, and maybe even a new level some weeks. And that's aside from the new seasons we're getting every 10 weeks. Fall Guys isn't gonna die again, at least not like last time. Epic Games saved Fall Guys.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; the game never died. It just died in the eyes of the internet. Among us and a buncha other stuff happened, leaving the fall guys community surprisingly large and peaceful without all the people who hopped on the bandwagon. In my almost 2 years of playing now I've never had trouble finding a game. Sadly, if the game you're playing isn't ruling the internet, you get bullied for playing it. It's something the community has been forced to get used to, but now, we're getting our comeback baby! So proud of Mediatonic for keeping the game ALIVE and the updates coming!
Uhh i don't know if you knew that but Mediatonic was bought by Epic Games at march 3th. That means that Epic Games did all of that.

9:24 here’s the thing. There is really no way to change spectating because you have to wait for everyone else to finish regardless. Also I personally think the 3 2 1 countdown is perfect so players can figure out what is going on. I think they should take out the screen where you watch them pick the next minigame and the screen where it tells you what to do. Instead just tell us what our objective is while the camera shows the map. Overall though I am enjoying the game so much and can’t wait to see the future of it. I’m also glad we’re back on season one because I did barely play most of the seasons after season 2 lol

just watched this since I didn't know about any of this history since I only started playing after it went free. It's fun and FUNNY! Best F2P game I got into. lots of people to bump into across cross-play ^_^
and I agree the complaints he made at the end didn't register for me. Thanks to crossplay, the matchmaking is always FAST, and the loading times are fine to me. The pacing is always fast and fun

The reason I always enjoyed fall guys is that this game doesn't require any gaming skills at all in most cases. As someone who suck at every single pvp and competitive multiplayer game I really like that I'm able to win something from time to time in this game.

I remember back in 2020 when the game came out, my brother bought it for me on steam and we played with each other. I remember getting so mad at the game lol. Luckily, I am getting better with my anger issues so now, coming back to play it on steam, it is super fun!

the devs of fall guys are extremely smart, and they didn't expect much popularity until now
heres the reasoning: at first before releasing it publicly for free (and creating the now show-bucks) the game was basically in a beta, not only because it just released but because it didn't have much content. Over time, fall guys would have bunches of new games that wouldn't bring in all much attention; however, it was for good reasoning. What the developers did was that they kept updating but never released it for free until they had so many games that finding a specific one could actually be quite rare, making the variety extremely fun and vast. In addition, they had the funds to do this since the game costed $20.00 back then, and now that it is free, all the people that play the game's first impression would be, "oh this game is so fun and there are so many different minigames!!!!!" Additionally, the idea of show bucks (although 100% inspired by v bucks from fortnite because Epic Games) helps fund fall guys even more to where they can make updates even more now!!! I think this game will not officially die anymore as it is now almost impossible to get bored.
good job fall guy devs (and Epic Games for helping bring all the attention back to fall guys without it going unnoticed)

The spectate => loading => cutscene is not that bad in a game design perspective.
- you are in a single lobby, so spectating the remaining people is the only thing you really can do to pass the time.
-loading times are there because you have to change map, change mode, put players on map and add any variations to it.
-cutscene is for people to get a refresher on old maps and for people to understand mechanics for new ones.
no, you could leave the game and get ready for a new one when you die, unless your partied up, why do you want to spectate?
For me the biggest issue I originally had was the team games. You’d be having a great run and then the egg or soccer game would show up, albeit fun, it would suck because you would lose due to just not getting put into a good team.
Now that you can CHOOSE the game mode you play, also with a ton of variety, that’s a win. I’m already hooked.
Question is, how long will we be hooked this time?
The fact that I can only unlock good skins by buying the battle pass kinda sucks…

Watching others finish can't be removed,you have to wait for others to finish their game,and watching others play can be fun(and it's better than a boring black screen)!The animation where all the eliminated players fall off is funny imo,loading with random maps scrolling can't be deleted either,it waits for those with a bad connection,so they have a longer change time before starting the game,so they will be at a disadvantage.And for the scrolling random maps, I want to say,why not? (always better than the black screen)The screen with the map tutorial is essential,imagine someone playing this map for the first time,it will be totally lost...(and then why not?)and the animation which shows the entire map can be useful for maps(ex: in Dizzy Height, there is a part of the map where it you have to watch the animation to know whether to go right or left,it allows you to go faster)And then again,why not?And the countdown is useful,without that,those who have a better connection would be advantaged (because their changeover time will be shorter)and then it prevents the start of the game from appearing too suddenly!
EDIT : Also,for some load times(I'm thinking especially when you're spectating other players and the load time when you're waiting for people to log in to your lobby)it would be nice if there was a text chat so people could communicate and pass the time

I honestly felt like all the loading really was meant to make sure everyone was on an even playing field like the pre game lobbies in other games so it never bothered me. The beans aren't dropping into a huge map but rather mutiple stages so it has to check for each player before starting. The map overview is useful as with the mutiple variation that can occur, it gives you an idea of what to prepare for. It's an online game so there wouldn't be a way to skip the waiting with all the different platforms and connections.

I didn’t really care for fall guys even when it boomed in August of 2020, but ever since the new update to make it free I played my first ever fall guys game and haven’t stopped, im now a daily fall guys player. This game is hell fun.
so glad i decided to give the game another go after suddenly switching from obsessively playing in its early weeks to completely forgetting about it. no clue why i stopped playing it in the first place but im glad i picked it back up when i did

While I am happy for the game's new success I really hate all the f2p nonsense that was stuffed into the game
Show Bucks, Crowns are no longer currency, Kudos are worthless, the fame pass is super grindy with only gaining 100 xp by winning, skill based matchmaking, the steam verison got taken down, and all costumes are locked behind a $10 paywall per costume where before you could get costumes by being good and winning
There is no incentive to play the game since they removed the ability to earn kudos by playing the game
Not to mention all the bugs
the game will fall back into irrelevance unless they fix these prices plus fix the game and all the bugs

Same here, won't be surprised if fall guys start dying again, if they don't fix these problems. Like lowering the price of showbucks or making it easier to level up the fame pass. And the stupid rank matchmaking, which i don't like.
Idk if the rank system exists when your playing with friends though, cause I haven't played fall guys by myself ever since the update came out. Also people will get bored of winning games eventually, as it going to take a long time to get crown rank rewards now that crown currency is no longer a thing and cause crowns are no longer in the fame pass.
I guarantee this will not be 'fixed'. Everything you just described is the bare minimum when it comes to F2P models. Bigger franchises than Fall Guys have fallen prey to these same practices. There might eventually be tiny adjustments to make you feel like it's changed for the better, when in reality everything is still relatively much the same.
They want you to spend money and with that being the core goal, every aspect of the game will find tiny, prickly ways to get you to do so.
Well the game did die again in Season 3. But now that Season 4 (and it's Creative Mode) has been released, Fall Guys has reached its peak once again.

I was a pretty active player during the explosion in 2020 and ngl during season 1, the levels GOT VERY BORING bc you'd very rarely move past the team game in the beginning and you'd keep doing the same few stages over and over, so I can totally understand why ppl moved to among us

Another part is probably doing collabs. They did one with Halo bringing new costumes, challenges, and a whole new gamemode. Then they did the Crown Clash challenges with Fortnite and Rocket League which would make players play even more fall guys to get a free skin in fortnite or get a Fallout boost for rocket league. This would make players play for hours to get cool cosmetics in their favorite game, resulting in more players.

This is a boxing match. Fall Guys knocked out Fortnite, and Among Us came out of nowhere and knocked out Fall Guys for about a year. Then after a while Among Us got old, which gave Fall Guys a chance to give a mean right hook to bring it back.

I'm glad Fall Guys has made its big return and that it made such a huge improvement on everything that I disliked about the game previously, but I have a feeling that something is gonna put the game back into its grave hopefully Fall Guys can stay alive for more than a few weeks.

You COMPLETELY forgot to mention about the deal towards buying the entire fall guys game which was acquired by Epic Games a couple of months ago, and I feel like they are the one who revived the game because ever since the purchase fall guys have actually been doing better than before.
Forgot to mention, Epic Games are the ones who made fall guys free to play on ALL major platforms.

A few of the other comments have mentioned this - but I think a massive oversight in this video is not bringing up Epic's purchase of Mediatonic. This is quite possibly a best case scenario for a small UK-based studio; suddenly getting access to a lot more funds, the server infrastructure, and the experience they've had with bringing games like Fortnite well and truly into the mainstream. Being on all platforms and being fully cross-play, with the addition of daily, weekly and marathon challenges alongside the huge increase in map variety, as well as variations within existing maps has potentially solidifed Fall Guys as a game people will be playing for years to come.

i remember when it first became super popular i played it with my friends and though “oh this is a cool game”. 2 years later they added so much and im playing and enjoying it more than i used to, i also love being able to play it on my xbox
how they would fix the waiting issue is by:
only having the intro for the minigame select showing how to play and showing the map
the spectate just kinda has to exist
and the part where people get thrown of should just be shown as an image meanwhile the next minigame is being selected and loaded with a text reminding that the minigame is loading

Personally, I’m hoping to see Fall Guys do some more crossovers and special events. When I first got the game after it went free, I got a costume of Enzio from Assassin’s Creed, and datamines have shown some sort of Sonic stage that we might get at some point. There’s tons of possibilities for Fall Guys crossovers in the future.

I remember watching you video saying how it could come back I thought that I could get like double it’s player base. But I never thought this everyone on PlayStation has gotten it they all said that they didn’t want to buy a $20 dead game but now it’s a free game so they are like yeah I will play with you and all the new maps and stuff makes it a lot of fun because there are double the maps sense I left and I have tons of new tricks and maps to learn
It's fun, but the microtransactions suck. $10 for one outfit it ridiculous.

Well the game just join Fortnite rule ( every game have their own V-buck and need real money to pay their own money game ).
Pre-f2p If you play 6 shows you would earn kudos to buys skins.
i don't know if this is possible, but maybe while loading into a show and when spectating, there is a mini-lobby with obstacles for practice, but you can still toggle spectate and if you die in the lobby you still respawn and stuff, getting rid of the downtime for getting to the end, along with the ideas dor the round starting downtime
another idea is that when the level editor comes out, there's like a hub where you can find and search them and maybe a featuring system for good maps (like geometry dash)
nevertheless, fall guys is a great game and the fact that it's been able to reach mainstream media after nearly 2 years is shocking. props to mediatonic and epic games!
I played it for the first time yesterday. By far the highlight of my day. By dumb luck I got a victory on my first round!
Honestly, I think Fall Guys is better then Among Us due to the gameplay actually being pretty fun

I played the game during mid-late season 1, and then most of season 2. Took a break, and then periodically played during season 5 and 6. Now that I can play on Switch, I can see me playing a TON more often.
Fall guys is back because among us is dead
The biggest problem is show bucks, because they basically have turned the battle pass into the season pass, and V-bucks into show bucks for fall guys, and there’s no way to get them for free, epic games made a bad descison, but they have to make money somehow, so it kind of makes sense, but there should still be a way to get them for free.
Like if Epic hasn't brainwashed you. Also, Fortnite sucks.

It was just like rocket league. It became popular but costed money, lost in popularity until they made it free to play. And it got alot more players and became popular again

You Should Make A Video About Animal Crossing New Horizons Rise and Fall It was the most popular game back in March 2020 and now it is nearly irrelevant.
To me the weird part is I was thinking in my head a few days ago "I wonder if people still play Fall Guys?". Never googled it, said it out loud, etc. Now all of a sudden Fall Guys showing up in my recommended. Maybe it's just a coincidence that it's become popular enough again to show up in my recommended a few days after I thought it, or maybe my brain is just really powerful. Probably not the latter
I think I’m enjoying Fall Guys more now than I did in 2020. Maybe’s it’s because it’s on my native platform (switch) instead of on steam but I’ve been finding myself doing much better and winning a few times, overall just having a lot more fun. And because I never played after season 2 on PC, there’s all these new mini games I haven’t played which make things more interesting _(when I actually get them and not just Knight Fever, SeeSaw and Track Attack for the millionth time)_

looks like the game is doing good because big streamers like jynxzi and caseoh are playing it on stream and they have been adding crossover skins like spongebob which is helping. it’s doing pretty good as of late! 👍❤
It could be just me but on the regular switch it is pretty laggy, that might hurt player count
