- In Northern Scandinavia, above the Arctic Circle, Jon, a reindeer herder, takes us into the world of the Sami community, where traditional life and modernity live side by side in search of a balance. In the sumptuous mountains of Sarek, director Corto Fajal, followed Jon and his family for a year and wondered about the fragility of this way of life, its contradictions, its paradoxes, but also its wealth.

Beautiful and inspiring
You watch films like this and others on slice. People around the world, living real, fulfilling lives, with meaning intertwined with nature and the seasons. Then you consider the lives of most of us Americans. Pigeon holed into this and that. Permits, licenses, protocols, cages, debts. Do this, don't do that. You're lucky to just have a plot of land to be left alone on. Then zoning, taxes, etc. Where in the US can one be permitted to be a reindeer herder? Or any herder of large mammal in general. Travel hundreds of miles unencumbered? We "crush" peaks and shred gnar for thrills. While these people travel expanses for livelihood. Use their energy to move efficiently. Not, oh I'm going to send it to the top of that peak we're passing, rather, I'm going to stick with the herd and fully take in the sights of the peaks and truly appreciate them. Snowmobiles for purpose, not to just fly 90 mph and bar hop. Perhaps we, westerners, crush peaks and do these extreme outdoor recreations to replace the need for this kind of life. Can you imagine Jon on a mountain bike sending it down ridges where trails were scarred into the sides of mountains? It just doesn't add up does it? I'm not trying to bash our outdoor rec. I recognize the therapy and enjoyment it brings many including myself. I'm illustrating the stark contrast in lifestyle. Even the way Jon speaks. It's simple, humble. There's nothing flashy, outrageous, he's not trying to be anyone else then he is. He knows exactly who he is. There are very few people who do. There's such peace and love in that.
That is exactly how I feel. I sit here in my room feeling my life is pretty pointless and I am just a cog in a wheel. I try and be thankful for everything I have but I know things I have are not always necessary. Life is really about living in the world and your head. Interacting with the world around you. So true that we are more than encumbered by the society that we move in with the rules, regulations expectations of who you're supposed to be, what you're supposed to look like. it's all so stupid in the end.
Such a beautiful and interesting documentary. . My heart was breaking for them when the reindeer fell through the ice. . The Sami language is lovely to listen to. Thank for this insight into their lives.
Why? They or someone would have eaten it anyway. It's romantic nonsence.

Well done. I love this doc so much. I remember watching part of this years ago, and searched and found it did come out 2011. I'd love to have an update on Jon and his family and community now if anyone can do this.
Well he is still a reindeer herder and still has his cabin in vaisaluokta. So not much change I would say but he did cut his hair short.

Fascinating people. They are using many modern machines and tools to improve their lives and that’s probably why they still are able to live the way they want to. Every time the papa said, “The state” did this or that, I cringed. The greedy appropriate what they want all over the world. It’s not just a Western modus operandi. They’re doing well if they can afford a helicopter to pick up their moose. Jon’s workshop is impressive as well. I’m thankful they prosper, but my gosh, they work their tails off for it!!! I admire them!

Yea, they're gonna need a lot of fuel for those ancient dirt bikes, quads, snowmobiles, boats, trucks, helicopters etc.
It depends where you come from and backgrounds.
@Marcus Living with smaller groups of reindeer goes way back, though.
@@isakfalk-eliasson1675 First at 1400s but most were still hunter gatherers following and hunting from wild reindeer packs. The bigger herding boom started in 1700s.
Thats same also for nenets. Those years i mean. Lots of reindeer hunters turned to reindeer herders in 1400s. i think because some climate change started in 1400s and the wild reindeer packs started to die off.
First nenets, then nenets teached herding to ngnasan, khnaty and mansi people, then komis and eventually it reached sami.
@@mktzi7678 I've read some alternate theories as well, pointing to earlier big herds. But I agree that a timeline like that seems to be the mainstream idea.

It’s traditional Sami yoik singing. If you do a search on RUclips you’ll find plenty of it (although it would be nice to have the credits for this documentary with the singers).

Where is Sami land located? In which country? Looks like a beautiful place and similar to northern Minnesota USA where we are

@@omega4chimp I recognize / have been at some of the places. They also switched between a Saami dialect and Swedish when speaking! They are mostly in the northwestern corner of Sweden, to the west of the cities of Gällivare and Jokkmokk.

Is that not OK? More than a few criticisms in this feed about they don't think they're totally indigenous, they are using motorized vehicles. I mean so what. 3000 reindeers is over 3 million usd in profit...
1 reindeer sells for about 500/1000€ they have 3000 not much divided by so many herder's. 1kg of smoked reindeer meat in Sweden costs 100€+. Dog looks like a Lapland Shepherd. Its a hard life done by passion of reindeers 🦌. Herders are disappearing in Sweden...
That is good. We have moved on as a species from exploiting animals for things we don't need. Leave the poor reindeer alone to be free and live out their natural lives.

The Sami are very interesting because they are a white indigenous people. We sometimes forget that's a thing 😁
We can be mixture i.e. the Vikings and Sami traded a lot in the past history etc. The original Sami had Asian look about them. Lot of Russian Sami still do.😏

This Jon looks no sami at all ethnically. Back in the old times we were dark and asiatic and we looked very east asian and native american. Some still do but its getting rarer and now real sami are dying of and replaced by norse and baltic genetics and result is this.

Somebody's making a profit somewhere doing something and living a house and they got these brand new snowmobiles got cars drive never seen a reindeer herder that lived in a house and had a car. Reindeer are the cattle to Sami. They herd just like cowboys do. They've lived like that for thousands of years.
@@richardevans2096 Not thousand years. Sami hunted wild reindeer before becoming herders. Herding started in 1400s but bigger herding boom started in 1700s.
@@mktzi7678 Our ancient history goes back far beyond those years. They weren't always where they are now. Interesting recent history facts nevertheless. I should have said Saami have lived off reindeer... I am Finnish Saami, as are my family born and bred in Ivalo/ Inari areas Lapland, but family history goes back somewhere near Ural mountains and even perhaps Asia as Mongolia also has reindeer herders. Maybe we are relatives.☺
