Stellar presentation, as usual. Thanks. I wear my Tudor Black Bay GMT Pepsi all the time. I also own the GS Spring Drive GMT and I’m in awe of its outstanding craftsmanship. It’s simply beautiful. There’s no comparison between the two but I love them both.
I prefer the Tudor but ultimately, these watches have different audiences. The Tudor is a tool watch where the Grand Seiko is a dress watch. I wouldn't be afraid to wear the Tudor every day and get it a little banged up. I'd pamper the Grand Seiko.
you prolly dont care but if you're bored like me during the covid times then you can stream all of the new movies on instaflixxer. Have been watching with my gf for the last days xD
Great comparison! I love both of them - will hopefully be adding the BB GMT to my collection very soon, I just love that thing and can’t get it out of my head. Such a shame the GS doesn’t have lume - it Would be a killer!
Joseph Stuart GS do a sports GMT with lume - I have the 44GS case and the sports GMT and both are great. BB GMT is an awesome watch though. On paper the GS is streets ahead, but the simplicity of the BB is it’s trump card. The clean simple look just really works.
THANK YOU for showing the snobs GS goes beyond what they think. And even Rolex itself doesn't match up to GS accuracy, hand finishing, case dial and movement finishing (except clasps) rolex is still a more mass produced watch than Grand Seiko.
Rolex does indeed match and beat GS at accuracy. This is one of GS's shortcomings - they need to step up their game and offer -2/+2 per day that Rolex guarantees.
For those wanting accuracy (like I do) GS has something Rolex or Omega does not have : the Spring Drive is +/- 15 sec per month... (mine is +0.2 sec / day)
Nice comparison. I have 3 Tudors and 2 Grand Seikos. I find them to be very complementary. Tudor being a bit more brash and bullish while the GS is more elegant in many ways. These two compared are very different beasts. Love my Tudor Pepsi, love my Grand Seiko for very different reasons and occasions to wear.
Awesome watches, I would only take the Tudor in this case, as I don't like the GS old signature of having Seiko on Top and GS on the bottom, but if the GS logo was there, it would have been my choice then :D
Not sure who would say that Grand Seiko cannot be compared to Rolex as they sell watches in the same price range - Tudor do not sell watches anywhere near the GS price range. I like both Rolex and GS but if you put brand aside and just look at the form, function and finish of Rolex and GS, GS are a clear winner IMO. I also like Tudor though and have bought myself a couple. Whilst I love the Black Bay, it just doesn’t compare to the HiBeat GS with the 44GS case.
I'm bigoted: "Seiko" has always meant "downscale" to me. Clearly, the GS is not cheap. It's a luxury watch. But I'm old enough to remember when Seikos were mostly inexpensive quartz watches worn by my high school classmates. I own three Rolexes, all of which I acquired new from a Rolex AD beginning in 2015. The Tudor GMT is my first Tudor. I was looking to buy the Rolex white gold, Pepsi bezel, blue dial GMT-MASTER II because it's as close to the 1960s Pepsis I remember as a child. However, I was passed over by my AD twice in favor of higher dollar customers (like I was passed over by Harvard when I applied; same feeling). As for the Tudor, I love that vintage Pepsi dial, Oyster bracelet, Rolex GMT-MASTER look. Given that I'll likely never be offered the white gold Rolex by my AD, the Tudor GMT is the next best thing. I especially like the industrial looking aluminium anodized bezel. I find the wet looking Rolex ceramic bezels with the stylized font (rather than the more traditional, conservative bezel font on the Tudor) a bit on the tacky side. I'm getting + .5/-.5 seconds per day on the Tudor by using positional error overnight. That's better than the +2/-2 I get with my three Rolexes. I admit it: I would take the Rolex GMT-MASTER II white gold, Pepsi if an AD would deign to sell me one. But the Tudor is a no-regrets watch.
Grand Seikos are beautiful watches, no doubt about it. I just auditioned my first one at a dealer recently and under lights, the hands and faceted indexes sparkle like diamonds. And that's the problem...they are very dressy. For me, the toolish quality of the simpler Tudor Black Bay suits me better.
I think it's downright disrespectful to compare Tudor to Grand Seiko. GS realized its value in 2019 and immediately increased their prices to show that they know they've underpriced the market in the past for what they were offering. I hope they continue to keep the prices reasonably low because I certainly plan to add another one to the collection. Really looking forward to the new releases for 2020.
These watches are simply incomparable. GS is way better executed than any Rolex (except maybe for the bracelet that feels good, but not substantial enough), let alone Tudor. Black Bay GMT is very good, handsome and solid watch, but its finish is rather pedestrian and it is unfair to compare it with this high-end Japanese masterpiece. Great review, though, as always! 👍👍
Lots of great information in this video, but the lighting conditions and photography wash out all the fine details of these watches and really hurt the GS in this comparison. For example, you can't see the texture of the GS's dial, one of its best features.
Owning a Tudor and GS, there's really no comparison between the two brands. I have a BB58 Blue and GS SBGJ203 and the GS kills the Tudor in finishing/handmade feel. I love the BB58 and will never sell it but comparing a GS to Tudor is kind of unfair as they're on different playing fields. The HI BEAT movement in the GS is more accurate and that sweep is noticeably smoother too. Love both watches and brands though!
The GS competes in a different class (somewhere around Rolex and JLC), but for my money I would (and did) spend half the amount on a tool-ish interpretation of the classic GMT (Tudor). The GS ends up being a bit dressier (fine if you like that), and could probably do with some movement updates (55 hours and -3/+5 is not competing with Rolex and Omega these days).
Well if we want some competition then we can give a try at the spring drive with 72h power reserve and +/- 15 sec a month... and the hand finishing of GS for case, dial, hands,... is anyway above whatever the movement inside
I’d personally take the Tudor in this case, but anyone who thinks it, or any Tudor, holds a candle to Grand Seiko needs their eyes checked. GS absolutely has what it takes to compete with Rolex. The only things they don’t have agains Rolex is the same thickness problem that plagues Omega.
Finishing is definitely a step up on the GS. Would like to know more about the GS movement though. Does it have quick hour adjustment like the BB GMT? Is there a way to rotate that inner 24 hour indicator?
I might have a bit of buyer's remorse with the Tudor even though it is a brilliant piece. The GS is worth the extra time I'd need to save up for its purchase. I'm certain I'd be entirely pleased with the Grand Seiko. I'm a stickler for detail and perfection.
Tim, my dear, I have the SBGJ201 and its a head and a shoulder above any watch in my collection which contains too many good watches, it is not accurate as a SD or a new Rolex, BUT this watch is damn Beautiful!
3 years on, the Tudor is more or less holding its value. GS still depreciates, which is a shame. I love the SBGJ series, though, and I'm glad the market allows regular people to enjoy such beautiful workmanship with no wait lists!
I hate how Grand Seiko has all these limited editions and such. I like how Tudor structures their lineup, easy to understand. Grand Seiko, excellent engineering however they need to work on their marketing.
Yes, the Tudor is a very nicely built watch but it’s an insult to GS to compare them. I’m getting a little weary of people on forums comparing GS to a Tudor level of quality just because the GS has Seiko written across it and is Japanese and not Swiss. Just goes to show the amazing brainwashing power of branding (even if you’re an enthusiast who knows a bit about watches).
Cheers Adrian! Fancy making some actual arguments? Design, heritage and usability (lume for starters), toughness all go to the Tudor. Polishing goes to the Seiko? I guess?
Tudor and Grand Seiko are not in the same league. Grand Seiko is at the level of VC, PP and AP but for price, a step or two up from Rolex, Zenith and Omega, where Tudor is a notch or two below the last three mentioned before Tudor.
Perhaps a better comparison would be the Tudor GMT vs a Grand Seiko GMT non-high beat with an ivory dial (SBGM 021). This watch is actually cheaper than the Tudor but close in comparison, with many of the great Grand Seiko advantages. I considered these two watches myself and chose the GS. I wanted a more dressy watch as I've already got several sports watches, but it would be great to hear Tim's opinion. Great video!
Unfortunately the GS will always suffer from having Sieko on the dial with a cursory glance it just looks like a cheap Sieko 5 . I appreciate the workmanship is incredible but !!!
Of course, Grand Seiko is a better watch that a Rolex, but it NOT a better brand, which a completely different thing. Lexus is probably better than the German Trio, but it is a worse brand. GRAND Seiko must get their name out there on golf events, tennis events, polo events, power boat events and so on, but that all takes time.

Knocking the Tudor as a Dive watch with a pilots complication is a bit silly given that the Rolex GMT has always been a Submariner Date with an added complication.
NC Prime The GMT Master was never a Submariner GMT. There are many that have had the problem repeat multiple times. Rolex - Tudor must be so arrogant they could care less about customers.
