  • ahhh well I didn't plan to make this video but since the fishing overall for this day was kinda beat and this poaching incident struck me in a weird way of whether or not I did the right thing maybe this will help as a whole for all fisherman and women to promote regulations, and catch and release.

Not saying you did anything wrong, but...
You should have called fish and game, or the appropriate body of authority. You might have saved those two fish, but that’s obviously not the first time he has done that, and unless he gets busted by someone with the power to take his license away, it won’t be the last either.
Nice work saving those two fish. Some people suck.

whats funny is that the real poachers are the commercial fishing industries and you guys don't do S**T about them. they are destroying, literally destroying the ocean, by scaping the ocean FLOOR as big as a football stadium. it will take years, more than decades for life to grow back on those ocean floors. by the year 2050, nearly 70% of ocean life will be decimated. you see underslot striped bass at the market and do you open your mouth? no. you think these recreational poachers are the culprit, right. he sure made the right call. give the commercial industries, the CHARTER BOATS (DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THEM, CATCHING A RELEASES NEARLY THOUSANDS OF FISHES WEEKLY; killing 30% from catch and releases, fileting on the BOAT, before DOCKING???? you know)....they get a free pass. get that F**king poacher on the beach. for god knows, hes making a significant dent on the eco system.....you did a good job. ABSOLUTELY we should play by the rules! not fair for us. 100% agree with you there, but the focus should be redirected to whats REALLY causing the damage... it was cool though when he released those fishes.

A call to a game warden might have been the way to go, but I'd probably do the same thing. As a former marine biologist I saw many people poaching in my day. The short sightedness of a poacher is they don't see the future of the sport. Back in the 70's excessive disregard for stripers led to their downfall where strict regulations had to be employed. It's the same thing with any species. Catching a bucket load of snapper blues back in the day was stressing the overall population in time. Sure they came back, but a ten fish limit was also put in place. I hunt as well. There are plenty of deer in my state, but an area I would hunt had a good population and we would take a deer or two from that area each year but then let it be. When this group of guys came in and poached literally every deer including the young of the year, that area was devoid of deer for over six years. Yeah, they are back, but not like before. Simply put, you kill everything to a point it won't recover, then you ended that forever. Moderation is the key. I also hunted ducks. For a while Black Ducks were off limits due to low populations. Just because the area I hunted had tons of black ducks did NOT mean I could shoot them. So we abided by the rules and left them alone. Years later, the OVERALL population recovered enough that you could shoot them again with specific limits. It's called management. The laws are there to protect the species and the sport. It's that simple.

    • @davebogdon

I take a very hard line on poaching. Poachers are the scum of the earth. They deserve no sympathy, no human understanding, no breaks whatsoever. What they deserve is to get their fishing and hunting licenses revoked. They deserve every bad thing that happens to them. They don't have any respect for wildlife, so screw 'em.
I think saving that poaching son of a bitch from getting a citation was not a "right thing." The "right thing" is going out of your way, whenever feasible, to see to it that every poacher gets cited. I've stopped fishing, hiked back to my car, and drove until I had cell reception just to turn in lowlife poachers. And I make no apologies for it. I think it's a moral obligation. You gotta watch out for your personal safety, of course, but stopping poachers is really, really important. If every poacher knew that every other fisherman/hunter out there absolutely will turn them in, poaching wouldn't be as big a problem as it is.

I'm not usually a "follow the rules" kind of person, but wildlife laws exist for a reason. Striped bass is a fish that has narrowly avoided the brink of extinction twice in the last forty years. I sure do like seeing poachers get their just desserts but I'm not sure how much good you can do fining people for keeping shorts. I'd much rather see fishermen policing other fishermen out on the water than have us all calling DEC on each other. I love the steal-and-release of short fish. I've done that a few times myself.

I told him to throw the fish back in the water since they were schoolies. He ignored me and pretended to not hear me? I took out my Iphone and took a picture of him and the short bass. He got pissed but I was more pissed. Occassionally there are cops in the beach parking lot. I was hoping to run into a cop to inform him of this MOFO keeping illegal fish. DEAP Water Guide You’re right I was fishing at San Luis pass and a Group of Chinese came and started cast netting right when everyone started to catch speckled trout and none of them were big enough to keep and I ended up going to the cooler and dumping it out and all the fish went back They weren’t happy about it

I’m Pacific Islander but I have to say it seems like the orientals here are always keeping under sized or illegal fish. I was fishing at a pier and saw one catch 10 baby sharks. Immediately went down to the water gutted them then ran to the car. Game Wardens received their plate number

Not saying what you did was wrong, but I worked on the water most of my life, river, bays, ocean, commercially. That's where the rock fish population may dwindle a bit, not from 2 fish a old man caught, and I hope they were not his only source of food that day. Most wouldn't agree unless you worked the water like myself, and truthfully the decline of rockfish has been proven wrong a few times. When the crab population dropped it was the rockfish that were blamed. In Maryland that is. I've caught small one's with over 50 baby crabs in there gut. Like I said, i think over catch is a big problem, people catching thousands of pounds over in a single day by net. 2 fish caught undersized in my eyes is no problem at all, but someone has to pay for all that fancy DNR gear, so they ticket poor people up too 500$ a fish for catching a couple small rock fish to eat, and most know about the over catch commercially but dont do anything.

Good on you dude, down here in Florida the poachers are harsh on the drum. Both are slot fish. Red drum aka redfish gotta between 18and 27 in limit two and the black drum 14-24 but u can keep 5 with one over 24 with the blacks. But the thing is the poachers usually take the over slot fish because they're big I guess. Thing they don't know is that these fish are born male and only produce eggs or turn female when they become mature or large fish. So the damage o taking a over slot fish can really effect the fishery. Keep up the pro fishery fish my dude

I saw a guy get busted for cast netting game fish. He had 25 bass, which is 20 over the limit, and a load of other stuff. He had a previous citation for fishing w/o license. Another fisherman tried to tell him but he just waved it off. This guy wasn't some poor guy trying to put meat on the table-he left in a brand new SUV. If you're going to poach, don't be stupid about it, and don't be a greedy punk.

I was fishing Crappie here in Texas and had a lady (with her husband) come up to me and ask my why I was releasing them. I always let them go but I tell her that they got to be 10 inches to keep and all she has to say is, "oh, really?" and walks off. Bastards probably keeping every fish they pull in. Ruins it for everyone.

You did the right thing. More of us "Legal law abiding fisherman" should call poachers out. Here in Northern Nevada we have stocked urban ponds to bring the fishing experience a little more accessible to Families who are not savvy enough or capable to load up and hike our Sierra-Nevada mountains. Hispanics bend the rules bring their under age Children and as the children run around not fishing the Men treat the pond like a free supermarket catching limits for each adult and each child (no license for children with adult). Problem is in reality only the Men are fishing but when fish and game show up they call the kids over to cover the massive amount of trout they are stealing. Of course their culture does not teach them to consider they are robbing others. I often have to followup on the shore and pick up the debris they leave even though their are trash cans available. No wonder Mexico looks like it does. At least that's my poaching experience here.

That was great, but extremely dangerous. Play it by ear, 1 old guy is not too worry some. Never try to be a hero when you're by yourself and there's 2 or more guys who are clearly poaching. Call fish and game, let them do their job. Sometime innocent people will accidently poach if they didn't know the limit slot, because they don't fish too much. However most people are clearly poaching, because it's so easy and tempting. Just play it by ear, don't be a hero without backup, call fish and game, and becareful. Criminals will not hesitate to hurt you, if they know you're "snitching".

All of the responsible sportsmen buy licenses, tags, stamps. We give our state and other's, a lot of money, to do things legally, and to take care of our wild environments. All the money we spend is a collaborative effort to help our state care for and service our wildlands.
I once had an old guy ask me to give him a fish and I let him take one, then caught more for him. Be kind and considerate to everyone whois kind and considerate, however, no one is above the law, whether one is ''tired of caring or not!'' Whatever the heck that means? yes poaching sux but stay in you lane you have no right to harass a fishermen it is illegal you judge this man for trying to feed his family. I know many of you catch schoolie after schoolie and throw them back forty to sixty in a night how many do you think do not survive. so its OK to catch sixty undersize fish from a school just for fun ripping the gills on a third to die but a hungry man can't keep a fish. that is why buy license and pay sport tax if you don't have a license you take a chance you will meet the warden.
