Im not good at drawing... No, i want to learn drawing. Can u recommend a first step that i need to do to learn on drawing?? I really want to be an architect but im worried to my drawing skills. Its really bad.
most of architecture is just messy doodles, the actual prints part starts with drawing with tools and rulers so it’s neater. then you can put it into a computer program where you can’t really mess up
Good video, I also believe in practicing drawings as a separate hobby because it really sharpens your focus, which is necessary in the architecture business. The bad thing for me though is, I have a load of artists subscribed to my channel and none of them are interested in architecture.

Math and physics are heavily relied on in architecture. However, you don't have to be an amazing drawer. My experience with architects at firms like KVA and NADAAA all say that you have to be able to convey your ideas to the client. If you can, try to take some AutoCAD/Rhino classes during high school to get a basic understanding of what real architects use. As you get closer to college, start expanding your interest in architecture; Try to learn as much as you can. Although drawing is very important, I think you will find that the field is becoming much more about digital renderings. You mentioned that you like to make models, which is a very important part of presenting an idea to clients. As long as you remain passionate about architecture and continue love challenging yourself, I don't think that you will have a problem. If you decide to go into architecture as a career, be in it for the long haul, it's worth it. Good luck, hope this helped propel you architectural interests...

@@whatwhat1949 Trigonometry is good math to know, similar to geometry, helpful to know about physics/engineering but you can leave a lot of the math to civil engineers
hahah, i love that fact you mentioned mullions. I was doing an event here a week and a half ago that allowed grade 10-12 students play architect for a morning. I was trying to explain mullions because one of the guys wanted to put in a big curtain wall. It was hard to explain what is now basic knowledge for me. Its amazing looking back over the degree and seeing how much basic knowledge we pick up. - LJ. Ohh and yes I am stalking all your videos atm. It is helping me procrastinate on my final ever studio assignment for undergrad.

I should perhaps clarify my 'procrastination.' If procrastination is the act of delaying something or to put something off for a later time then i feel like I am procrastinating when i have to leave my design work to do the mundane life tasks - things that need to be done to promote both a healthy and balanced life. Although not technically procrastination I see these tasks as prolonging or deferring my work until a later time and I have labelled them "procrastination" as they steal valuable time from what I feel needs to be achieved. By changing my mindset on what i deem as procrastination I am more likely only to delay my work by 20mins here and there as other tasks need to be completed instead of hours or days. ...... as i read back through this comment I am not sure if i am making sense but i hope you get the point. =)

haha, i figured as much but your comment made me look at my comment and forced me to put my thought process into words. - not an easy task but self reflection is a good thing. And really, is there such a thing a decisively taking a break? I try, and even in my moments away from my work i am thinking about the design. I do think going away from your work sometimes and coming back with a fresh set of eyes or even just rotating the paper to give a fresh perspective can be really beneficial and it is in these times I don't feel like I am wasting time watching a youtube video or skimming through arch daily but i think this can also be dangerous as I can catch myself going from one interesting article (or video) to another. It so hard to switch off though at time. I read a recent article about the importance of exercise or meditation in order to better focus when you actually working. It is something i need to work more on.
+Capital A Creations I've heard lots of people say they can't really break from something but I actually do (unless I'm really stressed or bothered by something.) It doesn't happen the instant I look away but if I walk off and do something else then my mind moves on after a min or two. But I've heard lots of people make that statement and maybe I'm just weird lol. And yeah sometimes I take a break and it's hard to get back to work but I'm learning how to influence myself to do that. And yes, meditation helps! Publilius Syrus once said, "Would you have a great empire, Rule first over yourself."

If you've read Think Like an Architect," and "Form, Space, and Order," which I mentioned in this video, and you want to get a lot more specific about buildings, then I would recommend "A Pattern Language," by Christopher Alexander. It's a huge book and it gets very literal like an instruction book. But it offers advice on designing anything from towns, to buildings, to rooms, to decoration. Take it's chapters as starting points. Don't feel like you have to fit into everything they say. I think reading straight through may be too much to process, but its a great book for jumping around and going at your own pace.

You don’t have to be good at drawing before you go to school, that’s why you’re going to school. And you can get better at managing your time. Don’t make decisions based on fear.

I keep seeing this comment. Is there a requirement for a portfolio submission for all architecture schools in the states? Over here we need it for master but not so much for undergrad.
+Capital A Creations it's not every school. We didn't have it at my school. We had an 1 month long orientation we called the "summer workshop" (which was like an abbreviated studio class) and they kind of used that to filter out the people who misunderstood architecture for construction management before they wasted a whole semester. I guess that took the place of a portfolio. But I've been surprised about how many comments Ive seen about those portfolios too. I guess they're more common than I thought lol

If you’re looking for something to do, I’d recommend you practice drawing. You can look up drawing tutorials online and work on developing your drawing skills. If you want to learn more about construction, consider volunteering for something like Habitat for Humanity.
This question is probably different for different people at different places but I want to get your opinion. Do you think it would be better for someone to live at the university or at their parents house? (Majoring in arch)
If money is not an issue, it’s better to live on campus. You’re closer to the work. But living off campus can help you separate from the work. So it depends. But I know people who fell asleep at red lights driving home after all nighters. It’s dangerous. I’d rather live in walking distance from campus.
@@DrewPaulBell My parents house would be 25-30 mins from uni. If there's traffic or a snow storm, that could make it 50mins - 1h. (it snows a lot) I can see myself falling asleep on the road.

I stand by "Think Like an Architect," and "Form, Space, and Order," which I mentioned in this video. If you are a structural engineer, I assume you are probably more "technical" than (for lack of a better word,) "artistic." If you need to learn more about the arts focus on those two. If you want more of a technical approach to architectural design, check out "A Pattern Language" by Christopher Alexander. It might resonate with you more than the touchy-feely art stuff.
Are you in the UK? In the US we didn't really get to pick our high school classes. Our math, science, language arts, and history classes were basically laid out for us. We could select "electives" like gym/art/band/etc. But we don't have any say over 4 out of our 6 classes. I keep getting questions like this from people in Europe, or at least the UK, and I don't know how to answer the question, because I am so unfamiliar with their education system. I have tried looking it up, but still don't get it. ...but I can say that if you have the option to take geometry, take it!
+kurt jay no. You need a computer. It doesn't have to be a laptop it could be a desktop. I guess different parts of the world could be different, but it wouldn't have been possible to get a degree at the school I went to without a computer.
+kurt jay you should probably talk to a professor or someone in the program. A desktop computer shouldn't have any problems running the programs. But, at my school for example, they had us take exams in class administered online. So the teacher would create the exam online ("Blackboard" was the name of the online suite that they used at my school) they'd make it password protected, and make you come take the exam in the classroom, using a laptop, so they could watch you and make sure you weren't looking at notes or collaborating with other people (not like you can't do that in the real world 🙄). They have a bunch of reasons for doing it this way, it's not worth listing them all. So, on second thought, you will probably need a laptop. But talk to a professor about it. They may be able to work with you.

Drew Paul Bell Yep. NC state and unc charlotte in north carolina require a portfolio before hand but i think its more artistic than technical.

Any tips on how to sketch faster?
Set a timer and practice. Get used to the mechanics of sketching and then just let it flow.
