Shen Yun was founded by the Falun Gong and apart from the dancing, pushes their anti-communist views and religious beliefs. If you know that going in, you'll probably enjoy it, otherwise maybe not.

Now that I think about it, there's so much Chinese history to choose from, it would be possible to make a new show every year. Chinese recorded history goes back thousands of years, and it's huge and complicated. There are so many different things you could focus on and make into a storyline.
I live in Phoenix and go EVERY year. It is on the expensive side, but well worth it. Everything they say good about the show is only half as good as it really is.

I watched this show twice, both in Taiwan. The first show was in Taipei, 2019. The second time was a week ago, in Miaoli County. This is really a magnificent show, perfect technical moves from all dancers. The music was great, too. I was really in tears when I saw the first performance of the show. 5000 years of glorious civilization of China is back! I will definitely watch this show many more times in the future. Hopefully Shen Yun will come to perform in Vietnam, my home country.

As someone who has actually watched the show, I've realised there has been a huge effort to defame Shen Yun online with weird rumours. The show includes about 20 separate pieces, the majority being Classical, folk/ ethnic Chinese dances and a few stories based on ancient Chinese legends (e.g. Journey to the West), and 2 or so music numbers (1 opera 1 erhu piece). The only part that people might possibly be deeming political would be the 1 modern story. Shen Yun has been quite transparent with the fact that members of their dance troop practice Falun Dafa (look up "Shen Yun- challenges we face"). Traditional Chinese culture unfolded when Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism were thriving in China, unlike today. From reading off their site, it's clear that the dancers are trying to revive this idea of spiritual betterment in connection to their artform. In the past, it was ordinary for scholars, martial artists etc to meditate. When watching the performance with my friends, we more interpreted the modern piece as a raising of awareness that this is under attack and persecution in China. This group and Chinese traditional culture is being targeted by the govt. Does that really make them political?

Some Qi Gong masters teach martial arts, others focuses on meditative practices. We shouldn't call Falun Gong a 'cult' because their masters are still alive. Cults should be defined by their impacts on society, and so far Falun Gong has only inspired a dance group is is globally renowned and celebrated, which none of the real cults have managed to do.
Shen Yun is about the ‘history of China’ as told through the religious practice Falun Gong, a highly controversial group that has questionable opinions of how they were oppressed. Shen Yun is banned in China for good reason.

I watched this show twice, both in Taiwan. The first show was in Taipei, 2019. The second time was a week ago, in Miaoli County.
This is really a magnificent show, perfect technical moves from all dancers. The music was great, too.

The Chinese Communist Party has done its utmost to try and stamp out Falun Gong and this dance group. It would not surprise me if they have people pretending to be part of this group and say bad things. Human nature can be really nasty. However, no-one is forcing these dancers into the group, it was founded in NY, USA, unlike what happened to Li Cunxin (during Mao regime) who was forced into becoming a dancer.

As someone who has actually watched the show, I've realised there has been a huge effort to defame Shen Yun online with weird rumours.
The show includes about 20 separate pieces, the majority being Classical, folk/ ethnic Chinese dances and a few stories based on ancient Chinese legends (e.g. Journey to the West), and 2 or so music numbers (1 opera 1 erhu piece). The only part that people might possibly be deeming political would be the 1 modern story. Shen Yun has been quite transparent with the fact that members of their dance troop practice Falun Dafa (look up "Shen Yun- challenges we face").
Traditional Chinese culture unfolded when Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism were thriving in China, unlike today. From reading off their site, it's clear that the dancers are trying to revive this idea of spiritual betterment in connection to their artform. In the past, it was ordinary for scholars, martial artists etc to meditate.
When watching the performance with my friends, we more interpreted the modern piece as a raising of awareness that this is under attack and persecution in China. This group and Chinese traditional culture is being targeted by the govt. Does that really make them political?
The dances you see are the bizarre interpretations of history by a Chinese cult. They do not reflect actual Chinese history or culture.
