- The opening credits (which are only comprised of the main title) and opening scene of the 10th Star Trek film, "Star Trek Nemesis" (2002). It's been 3 years since the end of the Dominion War, and the Romulan military is attempting to convince the Senate to accept the offer of one of its veterans, Shinzon of Remus, to join forces and become a that not even the United Federation of Planets can stand in their way. The Praetor, reaffirming the Senate's rejection of the offer, dismisses them. Leaving after their dismissal to supposedly meet with a Tholian ambassador, Commander T'lora leaves something at her Senate seat...

The imperial senate will no longer be of any concern to us, I have just received word that the emperor has ‘dissolved’ the council permanently.
it's pronounced *shattered*
The last reminisce of the old republic has been swept away.
This battle station is now the ultimate power in the universe!!
Here's a handy tip on how to remove a Emperor like Palatine
You can send him a thalaron device.
Gift wrap it though. Or better yet,put it in a box with some of his favorite treats!
With Thalaron radiation, that is! 😖
This was one of the rare senate meetings where something productive actually got done.

I remember seeing this in the theaters. As soon as that theme hits at 1:06 I immediately knew it was the Romulans. I have no idea how Jerry Goldsmith pulled that off.
Because if you think about it, it’s such a Romulan theme, militaristic and dark but with a hint of hope to it, A hope that one day, maybe they’ll evolve beyond what they are
There’s an element of militaristic deviousness, it’s perfect for the Romulans and I hope it’s used again one day.
If I may add my two cents as well, another thing that screams "ROMULAN" to me is that this song just SOUNDS... "IMPERIAL"... Proud, Martial, (like you both said), Haughty... But unlike anything with the klingons, it lacks ANYTHING that evokes the head-picture of anything tribal or savage...

"Maybe we shouldn't have allowed an unidentified device in the senate chambAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH!!!!"
Seriously, it's freaking red! It's the only color in the entire room. It's the only item being carried at all!! All other tables are empty. It was so obvious when she left it. They all watched it go off slowly like it was a laser light show. What the actual f?? It's just the worst scene. The acting, CGI, lighting, costume all are great, the score fantastic, then the writing is just terrible.
I would have loved to see the Tholian Ambassador in his life-support suit.
Missed opportunity.
Yeah unfortunately tholians are probably a massive pain in the ass to show. You can either go full cgi or try and make a prop.
Hence why they were shown through a glass window in Enterprise
I’m just picturing the two fighting over the AC for an hour and a half instead of getting any work done.
@@Ty-yt3lj They wouldn't have had enough budget or screen time for a CGI Tholian considering all the other effects (and important plot) in the film.

Shinzon actually survived this film and was imprisoned. Then he became friends with a young Talia al-Guhl, then eventually became Bane.

The Remus military-ish march at the beginning is just... perfect.
I wished there's an extended version of it.
I still thought this was better than Insurrection.
It's a mess but I agree. So does Patrick Stewart for what it's worth. Michael Piller's unpublished book about the making of Insurrection is quite fascinating though, and available online. Considering the contentious opinions the entire cast had about this film's production, I eagerly await the eventual tell all books when the castmembers get around the autobiography phase of their careers.

Yes, they were both terrible, but Insurrection was a lot worse than Nemesis.
Think of it this way. If Nemesis is an ordinary log of steaming shit, then Insurrection is a large bowl full of toxic, caustic diarrhea, filled with horrific parasites that jump out of the wretched, nose-burning filth and eat you from the inside out until you too are just toxic, caustic diarrhea.

If you read the novels that follow up after this, you find out that Shinzon had already prearranged for this to happen; and had specifically instructed Senator Talura to press a certain button not "if" but *when* the senate rejects the peace offer he was extending to them in a fake surrender; already his Reman troops had taken over security in Ki Baratan, the Rihannsu Capital City; and she was explicitly told to not be in the streets at the time it becomes revealed; as the Reman guards were already instructed to eliminate any Rihannsu at all they found in the streets for a prearranged time limit; he himself would immediately remove the evidence by transporter and move off to ambush the scheduled successor in the interregnum so as to eliminate any possible government... as for any reprisals; I doubt there were: the reason why is that the Remans were too valuable to be wiped out, unlike their pathetic master-race.

No one noticed that the one senator who departed early left behind a curious BRIGHT RED device.

The opening scene of the film was great. I could have imagined seeing seal and spock return.

Got to love the budget cutting in the open scene. The Imperial Senate? Its an overlay on-top of the DS9 station's inner hull. Pause at 1:39 and you can see a slightly modified Promenade ring.
Well DS9 was always (with the exception of one scene) a Studio Model, while this is 100% CGI.
Hmm, not sure it is. Regardless, the only budget cutting move I ever thought might have been made with this scene is that it feels like the director wanted to do a seamless transition from the CGI senate through the roof or a window into the live action.
Yeah and the fast camera move through the clouds is also not that impressive. But anyways I love the effects in this movie. I think they look far better than the ones in the new movies and they really showcased the beauty of the Enterprise E. Sadly I think I'm the only one in the world who totally loves this movie.
It is one of the best Star Trek movies for me.

Finally! A starfleet captain that knows how to attack a cloacked ship. :)
Personally I would one of the phaser banks doing the sweep on minimum power, then when a shield impact registers you can launch full phasers and photon/quantum torpedos.
Given quantum torpedos are the newer superior weapon of the two why would the flag ship even bother with photns anymore?
Good question. Maybe because quantums are so powerful they are extremely expensive in terms of labor and resources to manufacture? And don't forget, despite all the wars and deadly enemies they have fought over the years, Starfleet is still primarily focused on peaceful exploration and scientific discovery. Still, I highly doubt that any starship other than the new Sovereign-class would have had any chance against Shinzon's Scimitar, since their shields were still not breached even after two next-gen Romulan warbirds and the Enterprise together unleashed everything they had against it.
Better to have both type... kinda like how a fighter jet can be equipped with multiple missile types for different purposes.
Quantums are expensive, but they are also not very maneuverable. They're really designed with hitting relatively big targets in mind, like Borg Cubes. Against more nimble ships like a Bird of Prey, or even a fast battlecruiser like the Vor'cha, you need photon torpedoes into order to track them effectively.
Since Capt Janeway had returned to the Alpha Quadrant before the events of this movie took place, she brought back the Transphasic Torpedo. I would have loved to have seen a ship, preferably Voyager, take out the Scimitar with one or two and save Picard's tail. But that would have robbed the Enterprise of their glory, I guess.
i could have seen sela joining forces with shinzon trying to reclaim the romulan empire

We've got more rocks for the consoles boys.
At first I was thinking shouldn't an assassination device be a little more inconspicuous, I mean it's a bright red giant device in an otherwise 100% beige room. Then I thought "Maybe it's disguised as a regular senate fitting and some of the other Romulans have them on their desk but...no...nope, just her. Everything else is beige.
Then I thought it must be some bomb so even if they do notice it, they just won't have time to react. But no, it takes about 1-2 minutes to go off after a very slow and revealing light show and even gives them a grace period after detonating to give out any orders, like maybe "Send a signal. The Remans have betrayed us."
Thankfully however, nobody noticed the extremely large, red device and were too distracted by the extremely slow acting light show to do anything (even a casual stroll out of the room would have given anyone enough time to escape) so thankfully the terrible plot could continue.
It was probably meant to be disguised as a Romulan mascara case.
Was it really necessary to use so much Thalaron? I mean, according to Dr. Crusher, a microscopic amount would kill every living thing on the Enterprise within seconds. And how did Shinzon and his allies know that the radiation wouldn't simply spread outside the Senate chamber and possibly kill more people than they might have wanted to?
Thalaron radiation is always precise. Besides, the Romulan senate would definitely be like a fortress and have no open cracks or open windows.
Yeah. I think its the dosage. A microscopic amount could kill a ships crew but too slow and painfully. You know. It hits your face, passes, then it passes to another persons lungs etc etc like a flying cancer like something. But this amount showed, it just falls on them like radiation smoke and instantly dryes their everything cus of the amount. I think it was a sealed room. They just somehow decontaminated it after the coup.
tng is way better than discovery
The Original Star Trek is way better than Discovery.
