Here's how I would make *James and the Diesel Engines* better.
For the first two stories, I would swap the outcomes around so that it's Old Stuck-up who travels across two lines and knocks down the signal post, and have James crash into the shed wall. I think this makes more sense because of James's remark about diesels having a cab at each end. Also, have Bear stand up for the other engines instead of BoCo. We already got to know BoCo in *Main Line Engines* and he works on Edward's branch line, so it would be more appropriate to have Bear in that role and it would also give him a chance to flesh out his character.
In _Fire Engine,_ have James in Henry's role. Then have Bear rescue his train and tell the other engines about his mishap. (Seriously, why is it Edward? Did Christopher Awdry forget that he has his own branch line to run?)
Then in _Deep Freeze,_ have Bear take over James's train and pull him to the works at the same time (the Fat Controller could say that no steam engines are available to help). That way, Bear's arc goes full circle: he's rescued by Henry, now he rescues James. Then, James learns that the Works Diesel is very friendly and helpful (contrary to his earlier brliefs) and he goes back home a changed engine.

So much for being stereotypical, I sure hope James learns it's the personality of the engine that matters most.

I hope James will REALLY redeem himself but still be fussy. Maybe the rude diesel engines are/were 1 reason why he distrust most of them, giving him good enstinks and being told off for an inconvenient loss singal

Christopher's stories are ok, but some of them feel like a step backwards with some of the characters. Thomas in 'Triple Header' for example.

TobyandMavisforever Is it because it was a rehash of "Thomas & Gordon" . Not to mention they had an alliance .

Yeah. I don't know what could have gotten him to act like the way he did in that story.

Since others are talking about it in the comments, I'd say this is the weakest part of book 28. There's a brief run through of what an injector is, but it isn't really necessary. Essentially the same problem occurred in Thomas Goes Fishing, a story that mentioned the injectors without giving an explanation of what they did. The basic problem - 'James' tender froze and he couldn't get water into his boiler' - doesn't need a detailed explanation for children, as Thomas Goes Fishing already proved. And all of this means that the most important part of the story - James and the Diesel talking and becoming friends - isn't really shown, only mentioned. Compare this to Henry and Bear in Super Rescue - a much better story.
I want to like JatDE. I love Old Stuck Up and Crossed Lines. But, like a lot of early CA stories, the resolution is almost completely glossed over. I think CA's standalone stories and annual stories are better than his Railway Series stories, and trying to stick to a format that worked for WA really stifled him. CA's proven he can write great material - just not in the 'four-stories-to-a-book' format.

ArcAngelofJustice Not to mention he suffered Writer’s Tank Engine. Publishers demanded more Thomas stories and it led to a compromise with Thomas’s name being in a book, but not focusing on him entirely.

@@FullArcher05 I think Christopher Awdry did a good job with the RWS (although his father did better). But pity that we had the "Thomas" crisis, when Thomas began to get so overrated in the TVS, got unnecessarily in a lot of book titles and prevented new characters to get a debut.
At least he put the RWS an quick end before these problems began to get all over the top.
