The last scene of the season 5 episode 'Life or Death' where Mic Brumby leaves and the rest of the JAG crew sings the Australian 'Waltzing Matilda' for him.
I was blessed to spend a lot of time with Trevor when JAG was filmed in Australia - I was his body double and extra on a few scenes. Really nice guy - even gave me his home phone number and address and said I have a place to stay in LA. Sadly missed him by 1 year. Great friendly memories💖💖
This was such a wonderful scene. You could tell Trevor was showing real emotion when they sung that song for him,. Even though he wasn't really australlian, he was really moved. The way he just walked off into the darkness and the music still playing almost brought a tear to my eye. R.I.P Trevor; the most underrated actor of all time.
I love that JAG paid respect to Hollywood's most underrated actor of all time. Trevor Goddard truly was one of the funniest and most talented actors that ever lived. I'm almost brough to tears when I see this because it is such a fitting tribute. R.I.P Trev; you're the man!
The title is Australian slang for traveling by foot with one's goods in a "Matilda" (bag) slung over one's back. The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker, or "swagman", making a drink of tea at a bush camp and capturing a sheep to eat. When the sheep's owner arrives with three police officers to arrest the worker for the theft, the worker commits suicide by drowning himself in the nearby watering hole, after which his ghost haunts the site. Definitely a sad song! Great scene though..
As an Australian, this would bring me to tears if I was in Trevor's shoes, away from home, going home, leaving my friends behind. I'd be balling my eyes out.
This clip was also heard in the 9th season opener of JAG,which is dedicated to Trevor Goddard, who was on JAG for 3 years. It's a shame that there hasn't been any other Australian Navy Officers seen on JAG later on or it's spinoffs either.
But they have had a few Australian actors (some even had their own accents), & there were a few Australian references in the earlier seasons - the first ep of NCIS had an Australian reference: Abby talks about 'a toxic Aussie snake', I think
It's a song that is commonly sung by the Aust. military, it is not uncommon for sailors to learn it just by exposure to it due to all the military exercises we participate with our allies.
Not to mention that it is the official march of the 1st Marine Division (not surprising for Mac to know it ^^), due to that unit resting Down Under after Pacific Campaign battles - especially Guadalcanal - during WWII.
True, but I always liked to imagine Bud surreptitiously passing the printed lyrics around at the office and everyone practicing in secret at their respective homes...
Yes, there was text when they showed this scene. However, it wasn't when this episode originally aired, it was a later episode after Trevor Goddard died. This scene was added to the end of an episode and they paide tribute to Trevor Goddard
Rest in Peace Trevor (Mic Brumby) Buggart. I've known the Waltzing Matilda for years, but now, never again will i be able to sing it without remembering how you departed into the night... Rip mate, have a good one :)
@JokeeGA5 I was an on vacation in Boston in 2003 when I opened the Herald and read of his passing. Put me in a sour mood the rest of the morning. Saw Pirates of the Caribbean a month or so later. Seeing him was bittersweet. Ironically when reading of his death I thought of this scene. I wish they'd said Brumby passed away or something. Really show their respect by mourning his character as well
I loved this episode. It was great how they sang this at the end for him. I wish he could have stuck around on the show longer but the character was great.
Part of the last scene of the 5th season episode of JAG where Mic Brumby, portrayed by Trevor Goddard, was used for the 9th season JAG episode's ending as a dedication to him after he passed away in June 2003,though the name of that character hasn't been heard since JAG's 7th season.
I'm not Australian nor a Yank but I sing it. This song extends international boundaries and culture. It is a song about fighting for your freedom .."You'll never take me alive..." the swagman declared before he dove to his death. He gave more importance to his freedom over his life. This should have been the Australian National Anthem but who am I to impose if the Australians practised their freedom in a form of referendum? As the Yanks would say.. "Live Free or Die!".
He left JAG because his posting in Washington was over, and he was recalled back to Australia. Happens all the time, believe me. I've been in the navy for 4 years and I've served on 4 different ships and on both coasts already.
It would've been good if the song Waltzing Mathilda was heard on either NCIS.NCIS:Los Angeles,NCIS,New Orleans or even the rebooted Hawaii Five-0 for the scene in which the song is sang as their way of saying good-bye to an officer of the Royal Australia Navy as he or she takes leave of them after helping them out on a tough case, just as it was sang to Mic Brumby after his time on the exchange program at JAG Headquarters was over.
Owning all ten seasons it's almost hard to believe this is only season five. Five years later at the end of the series the only real major change is that the Admiral retired (and another happy thought is that Lt. Bitch is dead!). Even though I love the show they were smart to go off the air rather than ruining the series with major, inevitable changes, like with what's happened to "Law and Order" over the years.
It would be good if there were an episode of Hawaii Five-0 in which the Hawaii Five-0 Task Force gets help from an officer in the Australia Royal Navy. After he finishes helping them, they sing the song Waltzing Matilda as he leaves to head back home.
Hi JAG fans! Help to get JAG back on the screen! Lets convince DBP that we will never give up and that we hope to get a JAG movie. So sign the petition on petitionspot!!!
this scene was sad when it aired because mic was leaving the show. now it's even more sad because in a way it's a tribute to the actor trevor goddard. RIP
After Trevor Goddards passing this episode re aired but they added "RIP Trevor Goddard" and his date of birth and death, does anyone have this episode?
Yes exept Trevor wasn't Australian, when born in Croydon England (and then having lived in England most of your life until you move to LA ) means you're English lol But it was a nice ending none the less.
@SG1Mitchell No I saw that but I have long hated when fictional characters are never heard from or discussed again. I think they could have had an episode where 'Mac' learns 'Brumby' died of something and is really broken up
Wathing this episode I got tears in my eyes because of the sad ending, Now I get tears in my eyes reading that this actor really died So sad!!!! Does anyone knows what happende en how old he was?
I always wondered at the believability of this scene: how common is it that an entire bar full of people in America know an Australian folk song off the top of their head? I certainly couldn't recall an American one in the same situation.
this song is sung by us at footy matches, etc ... it goes above national politics, we nearly had it as our national anthem but the govt of the day chose advance aust fair because it was LESS political, the song has its roots in the huge shearers strike of the 1880s which brought australian industry to its knees, hence the song is probably too left leaning for a very conservative australia ... we tend to hide out left wing side under a stump, but its always there, in our deeper selves
And how sad to find out in 2023 watching JAG reruns that this talented actor died of an accidental drug overdose. I wonder how his children have fared.
Yes...My Folks are were a big fan of JAG We finished the entire box set..Thank you for what you did on the set of JAG. God bless you sir! GO NAVY!
My condolences on losing your friend and coworker

J.A.G. is one of my top ten all time favorite shows.
I watched that episode very into JAG when I was younger. Touching send off to the actor and a fitting tribute when the actor passed away.
RIP Trevor ( MIC ) Great actor will never forget you!
Greetings from Bavaria, Germany!
I'm Staff Sergeant of the German Mountain Infantry.
All the Best!
Bon courage!
Such a sad situation but it was a very appropriate and fitting tribute when they replayed it for a tribute on the show...I miss him :)
This scene was also used in a later episode, to honor the memory of the actor that played Brumby, the late Trevor Goddard.
The title is Australian slang for traveling by foot with one's goods in a "Matilda" (bag) slung over one's back. Nice tribute to Trevor.
He landed a juicy part on "JAG," but never found "steady" work in Hollywood after that.
Rest In Peace, mate.
I love this scene, was sad but fitting for his departure.
Brilliant. Almost had me crying actually.
Trevor, a great actor. He is even more missed then ever. Great episodes with JAG and Mortal Combat.
As an Australian, this would bring me to tears if I was in Trevor's shoes, away from home, going home, leaving my friends behind. I'd be balling my eyes out.
Me too mate
Miss you Trevor, you seemed like a fine guy . 7 years already... bugger.
This scene took on a whole new light after Trevor died. Almost eerily so.
This clip was also heard in the 9th season opener of JAG,which is dedicated to Trevor Goddard, who was on JAG for 3 years. It's a shame that there hasn't been any other Australian Navy Officers seen on JAG later on or it's spinoffs either.

One of my favorite scenes ever. Thank you for posting it!
i honestly cried when they replayed it. now this song always makes me sad x
I loved Jag back in the days and this scene was awesome. RIP Trevor

+Queen MagicHeart as i said :) mic brumby as a character.
+Queen MagicHeart Harm used to call him BugMe.
@JokeeGA5 I was an on vacation in Boston in 2003 when I opened the Herald and read of his passing. Put me in a sour mood the rest of the morning. Saw Pirates of the Caribbean a month or so later. My Favorite Navy Personel
And Movie Star Bad Guy Goddard!
This is the only thing I remember from this show, great way to end a season
Que buena serie. Se extraña. Desde argentina
Rest In Peace Trevor, you are missed 🙏🏻😢💔
Lovely Song this one really love it!
I love this scene!!!
Something interesting I've discovered- Brumby is a real term, its a wild Australian horse similar to an American Mustang
Even though Harm and Mic had their differences and the fight, at the end of the day they had each other's backs.
RIP Trevor Goodard .
He left JAG because his posting in Washington was over, and he was recalled back to Australia. Happens all the time, believe me. I've been in the navy for 4 years and I've served on 4 different ships and on both coasts already.
In memory of commander Brumby
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong, ....."you'll come a waltzing Mathilda with meeeeeeee"!...
No better way to send of an Aussie. Funny thing, this is the only part of the entire series I still remember.
i always come back on this scene when i left some good friends behind
I love this scene. it is sad though.
I didn't really like Brumby, but I love this scene. Thanks for posting!
Love this scene. Makes me proud to be Australian :) would be nice if they got the lyrics right though...?
when the actor died, they replayed this and it was very fitting
@loadedtomcat I never knew he dies until I today, I am going trough JAG and suddenly there is this in Momeory of... ... took me quite by surprise...
This was the perfect scene. its sad and its sad that the actor who played mic died ..
On ya Trev!
Did Trevor Goddard quit the series JAG after being on there for 3 years, or was he fired from the show?
In memory of commander Brumby ...
McMurphy’s Tavern is also featured in NCIS, and it is the same restaurant where Gibbs almost a gets killed by Ari.

what a mooving seen in this great series
This is a VERY sad scene; especially after learning the story behind it.
haha that's awesome, I think they sound really Australian once they get into it.. haha nice post
On ya Trev, RIP Mate!
Depends on the version you've become accustomed to, while most traditional versions use 'watched', 'sat' is also common enough.
true dat!
Hmm, after rewatching this scene. I still like it. I´m curious if they really get enough support for the movie idea:)
If Ed Edd n Eddy had a great movie to send their show off in style. Then THIS had to be the greatest way to end a season of an even better show.
+Shadowspark This wasn't the end of Season 5, this was episode 13. (There were 25 episodes in Season 5)
If they had sung the lyric right, as Brumby looked in, it would have gone, 'And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boil'
It would be good if there were an episode of Hawaii Five-0 in which the Hawaii Five-0 Task Force gets help from an officer in the Australia Royal Navy. After he finishes helping them, they sing the song Waltzing Matilda as he leaves to head back home.

RIP
Hard to believe this was filmed 12 years ago
After Trevor Goddards passing this episode re aired but they added "RIP Trevor Goddard" and his date of birth and death, does anyone have this episode?
Yes, it's online
Yes, but im looking for the FULL audio, and not all is in the movie in this version.^^
I felt my eyes sting a bit, given the circumstances...
Godspeed, Trevor Goddard!
Haha even the Gunny's singin'!
RIP❤😢 Trevor
Yeah I'll agree to that :)
Waltzing Matilda is an Australian folk song i do believe
And our unofficial national anthem
Yes exept Trevor wasn't Australian, when born in Croydon England (and then having lived in England most of your life until you move to LA ) means you're English lol But it was a nice ending none the less.
RIP Mic
@SG1Mitchell No I saw that but I have long hated when fictional characters are never heard from or discussed again. I think they could have had an episode where 'Mac' learns 'Brumby' died of something and is really broken up
the j.a.g. version of this song is the very best, anyone knows this version is avaliable as full version? i really wanna hear it in full length
who sings this song??
please is my favorite song......
He left after he finally realized that Mac was in love with Harm and saw no reason to stay in the U.S.
isn't it!??? then on one episode after he killed himself they showed in memory of him... that was killer!
R.I.P
@drent391 he died of a heroin overdose, same thing glenn quinn died from (he play doyle on angel and a character on roseanne)
Wathing this episode I got tears in my eyes because of the sad ending, Now I get tears in my eyes reading that this actor really died So sad!!!! Does anyone knows what happende en how old he was?

KANO!!!
It was tragic what became of Trevor. He could not get steady work in Hollywood after JAG and it really ate him up.
Rest In Peace, Trevor.
Try the version by John Williamson... I found that to be the nicest one so far...
And how sad to find out in 2023 watching JAG reruns that this talented actor died of an accidental drug overdose. I wonder how his children have fared.
Ùhm why did Mac look at Harm that away?
Thx
Hey Gebirgsjager Respect from the USA Hows Mittenwald ?
Season 5: Life or Death
RIP
RIP Trevor Goddard 💐
Not that common though I know the song just cause I like it
Hope your having your Beer up there
Mate
That and they've got the words a bit funny
In wich season is that scene?
Nina H It says it's at the end of season 5.
Okay Frances Justice
That clip is from the end of a 5th season episode of JAG,but it's not the 5th season finale episode.
