  • I had so much fun making these gorgeous epoxy filled laser cut earrings with the one and only Mindy G! She's been a great mentor and friend so I'm so thrilled to have her help today. We hope these "nuggets" of maker wisdom will help you find success in your own creative journey!
NOTE Epoxy can be toxic or cause adverse reactions, please do it in a open space or well ventilated area. You can also use gloves and a mask as extra precautions.

Really enjoyed this session. I have made multiple videos on my RUclips channel about multi-color epoxy pours, where we end up with a picture - usually a logo when done. these are larger and not so delicate. Lately I have been experimenting more with delicate pieces, nothing as delicate as an earring and this was very helpful to me and gives me several things to incorporate and think about - really glad I found this video. Good work.

Great video. We use resin all the time and sometimes need to have it set fast. Buy an infrared bulb and put them under (about 6" above) and the resin will set in about 5 hours

So, I tried this. I’m pretty experienced with resin work, so I thought I’d be able to knock them out easy. I made a few... mistakes.
    1) I didn’t have transparency film. Brilliant me thought I’d use the back of packing tape. Didn’t work.
    2) I sprayed my surface with adhesive instead of my earrings. Yeah, don’t do that.
    3) I mixed my glitter into my epoxy, which made it too thick to really work the way I wanted to.
But that’s all part of trial and error. Lesson learned: Pay attention! They give you great tips! Don’t skip steps.

Many thanks for this. Really useful to my wife and I. We are having problems with the resin seeping into the wood and discolouring it before the resin sets. We've tried sealing the wood with various sealants/varnishes but still it seeps through. Clearly we're not using the best wood for these and probably need to be using woods with tighter grains maybe? Would you mind sharing what the best woods are for this technique to prevent the resin seeping please?

Here's a tip. Get a shop vac and hang the hose nearby using a bungee so you can quickly clean all the little loose pieces when finished cutting.
Still debating on getting a glowforge because I don't like the fact that it has to be connected to the internet to work so what happens if they go out of business in the future? Anyway I'm also doing allot of traveling for 3 months at a time and I don't thing the GF is intended to be portable.

When you etch and cut, you should use wood or acrylic that has a masking layer. You can make do with painters tape to mask your own wood in a pinch, but working with pre-masked materials makes sure that it’s super clean and evenly masked.

    • @ethereal369
      @ethereal369 2 года назад

Another option to purchasing pre-masked wood is to apply liquid masking fluid with a small paint brush. After it dries, it protects the same way & it's easy to remove with a small rubber cement eraser. There are also videos & tutorials available on its use.

Mine did in places and when i removed the acetate, Epoxy had leaked underneath.. So they didnt look good at all..I ended up sanding them all down to remove the excess acetate. Now they look much better but I will end up having to polish them. I guess only way to avoid it is getting proofgrade. I have a tough time getting masking tape to stick on wood. I should have used blue painters tape. I used the last of my big 12" roll and i guess it didnt stick to well and most of my earings need repair..Otherwise I followed this exactly..down to the same toothpicks used!..lol

Was the masking already on the wood or did you add that before adding the epoxy?

We used GlowForge proofgrade wood which already comes masked. :)

@@ThatMomWithALaser Where can you buy these wood earrings where they have the masking on them?
I bought lazer cut wood earrings from Amazon and then searched for a tutorial and found yours, but mine don't have the masking, so what do I do to address this missing element? I'll seal them to avoid bleeding, but the masking is not on mine. You don't link to where they can be purchased, so either a link or a workaround would be super helpful! Thank you :)

Watching the whole video in portrait mode instead of landscape was a bit annoying but what a cool product idea.

Lol I understand. This is one of my earlier videos when I was only uploading to IGTV. I hope to redo it one day.
