I did this same job 5 years ago on my R50 the Midlands trans had no 1st or 2nd so i bought the 6 sp changed the front axles to R53s changed the reverse switch, and the starter. It is more fun to drive now,but it is a big job
Note to anyone doing their clutch also fit an new release arm. Its pressed steel, and it seems they are prone to snap. (the arm was only £25 and you don’t want to do this job twice) I’ve just done the clutch on my sons R56 One D. It has done 165,000 miles, and had to be stripped d because the release arm snapped. Its certainly not an easy job, and there’s a lot crammed in a small car. but I’ve done worse jobs too. Noting the comments about Mini clutches, like all cars the clutch life depends on the driver, his clutch plate and pressure plate were actually still very serviceable, and would easily have done more than 200.000 if driven in the same way, had the release arm not snapped.
Wow, all that for the clutch? My differential is going on mine, and it's due a clutch, plus I have gaiters going.. so because of that I'm having a 6 speed conversion. The cost of that kit and it's fitting is almost cheaper than the diff and clutch being fitted on separate occasions.
what date was this gearbox done, i actually owned this car and MOTed it 2 weeks before this video was posted !!

The way they design cars is horrible. It should be 4 bolts and 2 lines to change out the the trans.
