It seems pretty good to me for a first time! (of course, I don't know Iaido, so my eye cannot see the important things 😅).
I'm always amazed by all the details, subtleties and passion put in these arts by so many people during so many years. Nothing is left to chance.
It has been a real pleasure to watch it.

It’s good to see Japanese beginners making the same errors as British beginners when learning mae! Iaido movements are quite ‘analogue’ with a gradual increase in acceleration (johakyu) whereas karate is more ‘digital’ being...on or off. In Iaido the back foot always point straight forward rather than at 45 degrees as in Karate etc. This ‘engages the hips’ an allows for a straight cut. Being 3rd and 4th Dan in Karate and Iaido respectively, I find them to be very different arts.

@Gyakuto 777 I love the way you put it, analog vs digital, its sums it very well! I have not done karate, but I did some Tae Kwon do before getting to iai. What I found was another major difference is the muscle groups you engage. Iaido I feel is more about the solicitation of internal stabiliser muscles, while Tae Kwon Do was more about explosive power of external and larger muscle groups. The inner feeling that this different use of the body makes is what I enjoy from iaido.

Looks like Eishin Ryu or Musojikiden Eishin Ryu. I myself practice Mugai Ryu Iaido and Meibukan Goju Ryu. I find that they have complimented each other quite well helping to improve my skills in both arts. I highly recommend studying Iaido if you are a karateka.

Not sure about eishin ryu. His noto looks like eishin ryu, but his nukitsuke looks more like muso shinden ryu. In eishin ryu, we make a bigger cut during nukitsuke. The cut ends, when the direction of the sword is prallel to our moving direction. In Shinden ryu, the sword is pointing towards the enemy after the cut.
But in Shinden ryu, the edge is turned towards the enemy/away from your body during noto, while in eishin ryu, the edge is turned up, like he does it. There are even more Details.
      Don't know what he's studying.
He's a little sloppy too, the fast movements are just for flashing and hiding. No need to move that fast while teaching.
Not sure what to think about this teacher. Being japanese does not automatically equate with doing everything correctly.

Honestly, the precision and decisiveness of his every movement left me speechless. He looked very relaxed and pleasant but from his lightning fast draw to such simple movements as tucking his hakama before sitting back down or miming a thrust with his hand at 6:23, everything was strong, fast and efficient. In general, he gives off the impression that he knows exactly how to move his body at all times. And you looked like you were absorbing his instructions very well, too.

Many years ago, a Iaika told me that to be good at iaido, the katana must be another part of your body, an extension of your hand, then the katana will do what your head commands. And I think that's just what karate is also about, making your body do what your head commands.
And what he says at the begining, about looking 10 feet away, and not focusing on one spot, my Shotokan sensei taught me exactly that, don't look at your feet, don't look at your hands, don't focus on your opponent's hands or feet, either, that way you'll see the movement before it happens. It's a way to be aware of your whole surroundings. Great video, Yusuke San, thanks for sharing!

I have been doing different martial arts all my life and when I started with iaido it felt a lot like learning a technical instrument, like the violin, which I also learned.
I love this flow between slow and fast, because real speed comes from "slowness".
The only other martial art I know and tried that changes between slow and fast like this is chen taijiquan.

I feel the same way, I am Karate practitioner that took up Iaido about 3 years ago (along with Kobudo). Karate and Iaido have so many differences such as the length of stances. I'm used to widening my stance and covering as much ground as possible in Karate, but that is not always the appropriate strategy with the sword. It's very challenging but also fascinating.

This was absolutely awesome Sensei Yusuke, now I can clearly see why Sosai Oyama Masutatsu, admired the ancient Japanese Samurai (侍) in particular Musashi Miyamoto, due to their perfection and strict discipline. Adopting the philosophical mentality of (一撃必殺) Ichigeki Hissatsu: 'One Hit Certain Kill'. Using the katana requires perfect skill and accurate striking, or imperfect and innacurate techniques striking, can get you killed by your opponent. 🇲🇽🇦🇺🦘🐨👍🤟✌🥋😊Osu!

There's no evidence at all for karate-as-we-know-it when samurai were actually a viable fighting force, i.e. before Tokugawa Ieyasu. Great video though; enjoyed it a lot although I can't believe you were allowed to take swords onto those mats!! :-)

Interesting, you can see how tense the Karataka is. He's not at all familiar with Sayagaki, and Iai body mechanics. He's over gripping the Tsuka. He doesn't realize how relaxed you should be before initiating the Waza. Few know that it's a delicate grip. Centered on the Tsuka with relaxed index and middle fingers and tighter grip with the smaller fingers. Balancing an Egg.
I started in Judo and Karate for a short period of time when I was in high school. I was always inspired by O Sensei Ienao Iezasu, Tsukahara Bokuden, Itto Ittosai Kagehisa and others. I found a Kenjutsu instructor in the 1980s. Decades later, I can't even imagine doing open hand. Although I don't practice much these days. I do more select client Togishi work currently.
Besides I have a bit of a limp from Togishi now that I am older. Seiza, and Tatehiza Waza are becoming difficult.

That phase where you are going to whip the blood from the sword looked like you're going to cut your scalp by mistake.

    How heavy are those swords?

    • @fionasabre
      @fionasabre 3 года назад

Swords this size in general are around 0,8 to 1,5kg (1,7 - 3,3lb).
European great swords are about 3kg (6,6lb).
Katana may be around 1kg (2,2lb) I guess.
Swords are much lighter than most people expect

man... your're learning from the guy that does everything wrong in kenjutsu... even his kamae is wrong, even his swings (e.g. shomen giri/uchi) is wrong and doing this by his "method" leads to injury and bad habits.

Could you elaborate? Why do you believe he is sloppy? And could you give examples of correct techniques and form?
