I am trying a permanent magnet 1200 watt alternator with direct drive pelton on my setup. Fortuately i have 130 psi at the yard on am 8" line so no lack of power. I also have invested iin some 200 ah Lifepo4 batteries and a 3000 watt Hybrid inveter-charger. I really need to remember to make some video footage. Nice going sir.
I'll probably have the "turbine generator" up first. It will take a little while to get the big pipe for the water wheel. It's going to take a lot of pipe to run all the way to it.
Yeah, the cabin is too far from the house. The wire run I had up there lost a lot of voltage by the time it got all the way there. I think this will be a lot better.
No updates, water power takes a lot more work than it is worth. The creek floods often and there is always debris getting caught in the system jamming it up. I am going with solar for power now. I may revisit this if I can find some ways to overcome the problems.
i am right in the middle of building a 5' water wheel in some what this plan but it pulls water from a stream (up hill to down hill) tru shiponong to the wheel turning 4 alternators on 8 batteries running a 12 volt 3/4'' water pump with 2 more to help pump up hill. 4 wires from the batteries to inverters to breaker box. sofar so good.
these creeks in appilatia are insane lol you might consider doing something i had thought of to make power use mobile home axle with brake drums face the lugs couple together then build a water wheel from the lug connection build your windings into the brake portion then the drum holds the magnets you can bury the ends of the axle and cinder block supports on the leaf spring perch
Is there a vid showing the final product, I'm building a power plant without a water source and building a water catchment system to recirculate and this seems to be the best for my ideas in place... Like to see the final product
2:56 install a 12 v light bulb inline (yail light) inline so when the line is exited you can see, it can be a instrument panel 12v bulb etc... like the old cars in the 70's :)
Looks like you have a good meter Luke. It's easier to do these projects with a good multimeter. During a flood, do you get a lot of large debris going down the creek (tree limbs, large pieces of trash)? I was thinking of a floating water wheel setup I saw somewhere that rose and fell with the creek height. He had it anchored with long cables that kept it from being washed away.
Yeah, we have some debris sometimes. Actually, I think a big log was what took out the last wheel. I think it broke it into smaller pieces and made it easier to float down the creek. A floating wheel is a good idea.
Hi Luke! Awesome video. Why did you say the battery needs to be right next to the alternator? Why couldn't you run a cable from the alternator to the battery some distance away? Are you concerned about the voltage drop?
I'm currently building a small mobile waterwheel setup using a modified generator frame. I have a mountain bike rim with the 4 or 5 gears on it with 16 pvc paddles to turn it. I have a chain on the biggest sprocket leading to a small sprocket on a slightly smaller rim. A serpentine belt is ran around the outside of the rim where the tire goes, turning a 95amp(rated) car alternator. Is there a way to make it more efficient? I'm gonna have close to 500 ft of wire to my house where the battery bank will be located. I just need it to trickle charge my batteries 24/7. I'll be adding two solar panels (255w each) next month.
Use 3 alternators and a high volume 12 v water pump to pump water to top with some syphoning effect to reduce gravity figure out volume x mass x weight and gear ratio to alternators speed multiply ❌ voltages
Most modern alternators use PWM power control for the rotor you should not wire your rotor direct to the battery you may over heat the rotor plus it will stall the engine or put out to much power.
Mark Wilson he said that the stream generally never stops flowing, it may slow but not stop completely. A wind propelled generator bu a rotor blade may actually break unless it's always light wind. Even say a large industrial wind electrical generator if it goes to fast can break. Perhaps a mix between the two or a mixture of the two but water seems more stable.
A wind generator may be something I'll work on at some point. There is not a constant source of wind here however, and the water is just more dependable. As far as the generator itself, I plan on using a PMA. I just wanted to try the alternator before I convert it, just to see how it does.
Yes, that would be ideal. This was just a test of the gearing. I do have a video showing how to convert an alternator to a PMA. A store bought one would be more efficient though.
There aint no way that wheel is going to power that system...you could tell how hard it was for you to turn that wheel, you'll need something 4x the size to get any reasonable power and that setup you have will last about 10mins before self destructing , I think you know that already.
To produce any reasonable amount of power (500W+) from a low head water wheel you need a huge flow of water , at least a 12" pipe on full bore. I'm just in the process of rigging up an alternator on mine Homemade Waterwheel Micro Hydro we're hoping to get 500W from this and look at the flow and speed.
I'm not from the family of Fugates that were blue. I think they had some sort of blood disorder that caused the blue color. I have never met one that was blue.

Wow! Fascinating to me. As always- educational and informative!
👏👏👏 Luke the “Electrical GURU” ⚡️🌩⚡️👍🏼
Thanks! I get lucky sometimes.
😂😂👍🏼
Thank you. I have been looking for an explanation of why alternators doesn't work without converting it.
Glad to help.
I'm dying from anticipation to see it working in the water and making power.

Sometimes I click the like button on my own comments just to get it rolling.
Look forward to see how you make the PMA.
I plan on converting two, if not all three alternators I have. They all had bad components anyway.
Did you upload pma conversion vid?
Lynrd Skynyrd should write a song about your skills. Oh wait, they already did. Good work man. Thanks for your great work.
Glad you like it!
Your useing it to send electricity to your cabin? That's great!! It will really save on your electric bill. Great job Luke.
Yeah, the cabin is too far from the house. The wire run I had up there lost a lot of voltage by the time it got all the way there. I think this will be a lot better.
Awesome video. Thanks for uploading it.
One good thing about using the field instead of a permanent magnet rotating field is spool up speed control.
Do you have any updates on this project? Really impressed with the ingenuity of it all.
No updates, water power takes a lot more work than it is worth. The creek floods often and there is always debris getting caught in the system jamming it up. I am going with solar for power now. I may revisit this if I can find some ways to overcome the problems.
@@lukeFugate Use pvc to run the water away from the river to the setup.

Sounds like a good project. Good luck, hope it works well for you.
If u use a old school alt. Not a cs series it will work best also can step on it an get 150-175 amp instead of 75-100 amp
Thanks for the video but why not just use a washing machine motor? Just curious

Good idea! That would be a very sturdy design.

It's coming up. I just have to build a water way to it. I have actually changed out generators and varied the design a little.
The alternator will be fine, God willing and the creek don't rise.
lol true.

With a name like Fugate you got to be good
You know that's right!
Hi Luke! Awesome video. Why did you say the battery needs to be right next to the alternator? Why couldn't you run a cable from the alternator to the battery some distance away? Are you concerned about the voltage drop?
Yes, the voltage drop is the problem. I ended up using a PMA and ran the ac current through the wires to the regulator on my pelton wheel generator.

a delivery pipe/flume Should be Just slightly sloped; 1/1000, based on one meter, per kilometer.
How is the project going? How many watts you can make per hour? Thank you!
Them jumper cables look familiar, where have I seen them before? Lol
LoL yeah, those are the welding leads for Ol' Greens welder.
Some people can build reliable generators. Some people can make videos. Some people can do both and some people shouldn't even try.
3500 rpm is necessary for alternators to work properly I was told. A series of clever gears should achieve that with a stream or river
Yes it should. This design is easily customizable.

Wouldn't a small roof mount wind turbine generator work the best ?

Just the generator not the blades
I'm curious as to what you mean.

so you need about 40 lbs of water in your wheel... I think you need a bigger wheel
It would be better to have a bigger wheel.
How to make a pms out of a alternator
Not the best engineering with too many losses here. Solar is the way to go instead of water power, way too much maintenance for water.
