It's why you should wear boots that come at least three inches about the Lateral Malleolus (the knobbly bit on the outside of the ankle) He's looking at six to nine months for the ligaments & tendons to heal. It depends on if he's sprained them or, actually torn them. It's a far more complicated injury than breaking a bone. Ligaments & tendons have a very poor blood supply, & are inelastic, so do not give under strain...they break & tear.
Did that same thing trying to kick start my brother’s older Harley (A M F) street / dirt bike! Not a pleasant experience but a lesson well learned! 🤷♂️🤨👍🏼

Shovels can be beasts, mines bored 120 over. It's not a kickstart, and it's REAL hard on starters.... your basicly kick starting a Chevy small block, takes about the same amount of umph. But of one's not hopped up and timing retards on it you can start them by hand.
I can tell you, from the days of my old Ducati 450 single, that kickback is vicious. No, it'll hardly ever get your knee, but it WILL turn your ankle and foot the wrong way 'round

Made walking a challenge for a while and my calf turned black and blue for a time. It makes you a little gun shy using the kick starter after that! If the engine is shut off on a compression stroke, and then you crank it with your leg, itll combust ,which in turn transfers that momentum from the piston and crank back into the kick start lever. A lot of arm injuries happened back in the day from the old "hand crank style " vehicle/tractor engines because of this same issue.
I don’t know anything about US bikes but in India, we drive royal Enfield and it a de pressuring system just to remove the possibility of what happened in the video

100% when I was young, my dad told me if I could start his 71 ironhead, I could drive it. I was damn close to braking my leg in half at my knee. Did get it started, didn't get a ride tho leg was not okay
