As a beginner pen and inker, (at 60) I am usually overwhelmed and intimidated by master studies. However, your style of tuition and calm approach does nothing but inspire and excite me in my journey. Much gratitude.
Wow Chloe! What I am amazed by is how you point out what is wrong with previous works, which I was already envious of skill wise, and yet you bring us along openly describing where it can be improved and then show it. This transparency is often not expressed by most art channels. I appreciate it immensely.
I appreciate that Casey. Learning to self-assess objectively takes time getting used to so that it's actually useful (criticism is easy, art is difficult). Thanks for your continuing support for my work and channel! Happy Holiday Season to you and yours.
Glad to hear you can relate. Making these videos forces me to think through the process a lot more, and focus on what is useful to make forward progress. Happy New Year!
I've never heard of Booth but really like his work. Thank you for introducing him to me. This is the first video of yours that I've watched and I think your work is amazing!
using the white cloud as the contrast to the black bird was very clever but i do really wish the clouds had more... rendering? what do you think? really nice work btw! how you explained the process of preparing for your artwork and the summary of the different kinds of combinations of contrast is something ill definitely keep in mind and remember next time i work on a big project like this.
Wow! What a terrific teacher you are. This was a great, informative video, very helpful, without a lot of fluff. I appreciate how you've broken down this task in a clear and methodical way. Thank you so much for this video.
aieeeeeee...the scribbles.....you are a maniac Ms, Chloe, I tried for years to master the rapidiograph and brush and and just forget dip pens, I reluctantly went to Pigma, then digital after arthritis messed with my hands .. just fabulous work, got the book too...
I plan on doing a pen and ink book cover style illustration fot a friend, and these value guides fit the scene so well that I'll have this video open when I start. Fantastic!
You tube suggested your profile to me…and I am absolutely blown away by your beautiful drawings! I love pen and ink and would like to get better at it. Definitely going to follow your channel now and learn! Thank-you so much for your posting. 😊
Hi Chloe!! Ahhh, the good ( Great) ol' Guptill's, Rendering In P&I book!! One of my favorites in my collection of this style of arting! I am So Excited to find a modern day artist that seems to love this style ad much as I do! I have been searching most of my life, trying to learn bow some of these techniques fit together..as many etchings and engravings always seemed most like pen and nib works to me. That's just too labor intensive imho. I LOVE your creations, and demonstrations!! Thank You SO MUCH!!Hugs and Respect from Iowa USA.- Mindi. Merry Christmas!🙏🎄🐚
Superb work Chloe and a very well presented tutorial. I have recently bought some dip and mapping pens to try and recapture my good handwriting (I’m seventy and was taught “ proper “ handwriting at school ) The ballpoint age ruined most peoples writing and it is very rare to come across nice examples. I do also draw quite a lot, but haven’t tried pen and ink,but I certainly will now. Thanks for sharing and kind regards from England. X
Nice work. I had an engineering professor in college that was around 75 years old. He was somehow able to use a ruling pen like you showed and with a circle template was able to ink a circle with a perfect-width line all the way around. He twisted his hand around as he drew it and it came out perfect and without any ink bleeding under the circle template. All of us students watching him were like, "What is this wizardry!?" LOL I have never seen anyone else do that in my life and I'm now 50 years old.
Hi! I just found your channel and I have to thank you for making such informative videos. I like the calm music and clear narrating audio too. Can't wait to see what you'll create in the future!
Thank you for this. I often have trouble with composition and the positioning of values. This helps clarify it a lot 👍👍 Beautiful finished drawing. I'd love to see videos on texture effects.
Thanks for the suggestion. I made a SHORT on this topic: ruclips.net/user/shortseirOkBm0ZMI?si=IIxhosxvBds5_dSI or if you're interested in an in-depth class about dip pen drawing (includes nib maintenance), check out my new course, here is the trailer: ruclips.net/video/YJpcUNe2PGg/видео.html
This is really awesome! Inked drawings look so sick. I've been drawing for years with pencil now, but was always too scared to really learn inking, because I couldn't correct my mistakes. I recently started to try it out for the first time. Your video was very helpfull. Much love from germany 😊
Thanks, I'm glad that you're enjoying the videos. I started drawing again at in 2020 after a 25-year break. This channel is really about sharing tips that helped me (are helping me) progress with pen and ink and how to be a "better self-taught artist".
I was too slow ordering the new Booth Book when it was on campaign with KickStarter. The book shown in this video is called Dynamic Black & White by Leslie Cabarga, and has only a few Booth illustrations in it - though very good ones and worthwhile.
Hi Chloe. Wonderful video as always. What is that book you open at the beginning? Black and white illustrations by who? I’ve tried searching for it, but can’t find it. Thank you for your help x
Is the manga nib holder on 4:52 better for drawing, than the standard common wooden ones? I mean, does it offer better control/precision when you draw with it please?
That's the Tachikawa T-40 pen holder, it has two holes for standard and smaller cylindrical japanese nibs, and has a comfortable grip, it's my favourite. You can read more about pen holders on my blog in my dip pen guide here: longstrideillustration.com/a-beginners-guide-to-dip-pens-for-drawing/
There are so many on my wish list, some day I'll have a pile to recommend. For now you can check out Alphonso Dunn and Frank Lohan, more books on my FAQ page: longstrideillustration.com/faq/

Hi, I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you asking if I hold tension in my hands while I ink, or are you finding that my artwork "looks" tense? The key takeaway from the video is that, with pen and ink - especially using dip pens and liquid ink, preparation gives confidence that the artwork will turn out the way we want. Hope this helps clarify 😊
@@longstrideillustration I was referring to the experience of drawing, I will probably never get into drawing but I was struck by your art so I had to leave a comment. I love your cat too!
Ninja Turtles creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird used an ink to create shadows. An ink that did not cover the lines but was dark enough to mark the texture of the paper. My question is, what ink do you recommend to make shadows and that can be used with the pen drawing style?
My guess is that they used a Pigment-carbon-mixed based India ink diluted with water to get that effect. I've got a bit of info about inks here: longstrideillustration.com/a-beginners-guide-to-dip-pens-for-drawing/
The sound in your videos is too low. It is not my devise I have adjusted it to max. I don't have this problem with others and I really want to watch and listen to your videos. Can you adjust your sound?

thank you for this. art RUclips severely lacks in technical lectures (no one's fault. it's free after all). this is so invaluable
