Marvellous arrangement and performance. There is a widespread misunderstanding of the lyrics of this song. Obviously a queue of naked boys newly enrolled in the army is entering either a medical test or, more probably, the showers. The expression "bordel ambulant" means something like "a disorderly and pitiful situation" ("ambulant" referring to the army itself, the army being mobile so is the disorder). The turning point of the song is when the boy loses his innocense at realising the liutenants sexual attentions, at that point the song becomes more sexual, and the effect of the lines on each woman seeming to murmur "next" is much stronger if "next" up to that point only refers to various obligations, all in line for the shower or to be sacrificed in war. I admit that I have even seen French interpretations making the same mistake, but the one I am proposing makes much more dramatic and poetic sense.

Your translation is just perfect, except for "je jure sur la tete de ma premiere verole", which has a very Celinean meaning. Verole can also mean syphilis, gonorrhea and in this context this would be a much better translation than just "pox".

frankly, having a woman sing this song is wrongheaded. Yes, women fight wars now, but half the song is about contracting VD from a prostitute. My Uncle who served in WW2 for the US said that the army 'managed' makeshift bordellos[this was of course NOT publicized]...but it's hard to imagine a female army person going to a prostitute with the army acting as a pimp and catching VD. This is a thumbs down for me. To take something so bleak and raw and emotional and throw an orchestra behind = mistake

no, in Brel's own lyrics it is " le voix de cet adjudant de mes fesses", so "my ass" is the correct translation.
The idea of the Armed Forces Officers acting as the Pimp is a very interesting take on the interpretationl. It seems to make sense as a possible view point of the song's lyrics. But you may be missing the realoism of girls or women being members of the armed forces themselves. During the post war years as a pre teen child i was sent to a milatry bording shool along with 600 pre teen milatry girls. All children of serving milatry personel. For us. That was out life. We didn't have any thing else. We were there lock stock and two smoking barrels. We lived, ate, slept and dreamed there. They miltry teachers even had to teach where the country of origin was as it was across the seas and out of reach. So everything was arranged, bought and paid for by the benevolent Milatry High Command. Even the appointed girl friends whome we met at social parties every so often. Who yours was was not by choice but by designation. IE Your partner for tonights party is 'Linda, Georgina, Beverly or any of the hundred or so of your own age group.
So whilst my interpretation of the "Au Suivant" (Jacques Brel) lyrics is those clearly of a male. It could just as easily have referred to woman/women in service. But generally the followers of the followers would usually normally have been males depending on the paticular situation. Jacques Brel describes it as 'not Waterloo or Arcole (Ce ne fut pas Waterloo, non, non mais ce ne fut pas Arcole). So likely not on a war front as such, so maybe back at the training camp or barracks. One naked body wrapped in a towel after another in a bordello seems to be exactly what the lyrics are describing. All a gift of the army free of cost. So my interpretation is it was just the warrant officer's idea for a night out for the lads. But as happens in Army life so often is that one man's idea of fun is another man's idea of an outrage. An Office, General or Parliamentry Minister sat in his far-from-the-war-front comforatble office of operatioanl planning may be planning a cosy victory where as the real front line is a more savage meat factory affair where the new recruits may be paying to be turned in to bloody mince meat (A gift of the army free of cost (Paid by giving their lives (Supposedly))).
It's from an era where conscription was compulsory. So the youths education or training was not as such volentary. Hence my interpretation is that the song is a protest song. A protest about the outrage and how the youth were being raped by those supposed peers whome you referred to as The Pimp. The song narrates events in the past but he is experiencing them as a nightmare in later years (Post traumatic Stress Syndrom). Your duty is to follow orders hence the followers following, 'Next'. It's a protest about the out-rage of the inocense lost. A coming of age stroy where the army turn children in to men or women. But for one young twenty year old the educational night out for the lads was an unforgetable night. Maybe he lost something that night when he was converted in to being a man which he does not want to forget. The loss of which along with the whole involentary show which was milatry life was something he thinks he could well have done with out. His gonorrhea doesn't help either. It's not some thing a person can just live with. Aso if he as a young inocent twenty year old has to live with it, but everybody has to know (Doctors, Army Geneals, Police, Goverment and women) then why the hell (his opinion) shouldn't you (Or everybody) know? Hence a protest song about lost inocense free of cost. But such kindly free gifts may not be so welcome. Not to all, that is. The Queer Lieutenant may have difficulties understanding the problems or complaints as he could easily say 'never look a gift horse in the mouth', It's free, so where is the problem, lad? It's your free ticket home (Invalided out)'. But that's just more of the nighmare to the lad as why would he want to go home now ('One day I will become a cripple or a nun or hanged (Un jour je me ferai cul-de-jatte ou bonne sœur ou pendu')? IE. It's all just more of the nightmare. It's about out-rage'.
