- There are some canned foods that are so common that we all tend to expect them to come in a can: soup, vegetables, tuna, sauces. But look a little closer at what's in the canned foods aisle at your local supermarket and you might be shocked to see some of the more esoteric stuff that can be made shelf-stable in a can.
Bread? Yep. Cheese? You bet. Even fancy stuff like truffles. It can get even weirder from there. But the really shocking part? Some of that odd canned food is actually really good, and worth trying. These are the most unusual canned foods you need to try before you die.

What unusual canned foods have you tried that were surprisingly good (or terrible)?
We grew up having B&M Brown Bread every Saturday night for dinner. Boston Baked Beans, Hot dogs (no buns) Chips & Brown Bread. A traditional dinner on my Mother's side of the family. I mean every week, from my first memories, right till I was married! It is really good, Mom would take it out of the can, wrap it in tinfoil & bake it till warmed throughout, butter...yum!
Underwood Deviled Ham we had a lot also. Mixed with Best Foods mayo, maybe a chopped up hard boiled egg, a tad bit of sweet relish & such a good tasting sandwich!
Same here....Saturday night supper. I live in California now and have a case of B&M brown bread with raisins in my pantry. Great for a snack when toasted and spread with cream cheese.
P.S. We only used Grandma Browns baked beans. Gloopy beans in a can, then mix in ketchup, brown sugar, a bit of mustard and bake until crusty on top. Delish!
When I saw a TV play that was set in England, one of the characters had this for breakfast every day: Eggs, brown bread and beans. I thought that was the most exotic thing I'd ever heard of (I lived in Seattle, cut me some slack) so I rushed out and bought a tin of B&M brown bread, baked beans and more eggs. It was delicious. Took me about 20 years to discover that was a common working class breakfast.
When toasted, the brown bread gets a wonderful thick crust and the inside is warm and chewy. It's good spread with cream cheese, but even better with a lot of butter.
If nobody's said how to prepare the canned bread: Open one end of the can and stand it closed side down in a deep pan of boiling water. Simmer til it's heated through. To get it out of the can, poke a hole in closed side. Shake out onto a plate.
I loved smoked oysters, canned tamales (preferably smothered in canned chili) and Underwood Deviled Ham, and I need to try the other foods on this list.
I love the oysters and tamales too.
Love those also!
My grandma made Boston brown bread herself in Folgers coffee cans. I can still remember how good it was.
Yes, there’s actually recipes online for Coffee can bread but, just like everything else there are different varieties, mostly the easiest to find is white bread made in a coffee can, something I learn to make yrs ago in a Home E.C. class. It’s really good.
I got 2 cans a while ago, and I tried one.
Just as I remember. (Saving the second
can for something in the future.) It is just
fine. I do enjoy them.
steve
Never had it.
I've been a camper & a great thing about these non fridge foods .... when you're REALLY hungry (!) a new find from the can aisle might become the greatest thing ever...or not haha. Best one not mentioned here is corned beef hash
Agree!
Hormel Canned Tamales with corn kernels skinned off the cob with lots of whole well salted butter is truly one of my Tex-Mex at home favorites.
Canned Portuguese sardines are🔥
Gordon Ramsay made an excellent sandwiche recipe with it

DUDE CAJUN BOILED PEANUTS ARE MY JAM

@@naturalsunshine2408 They are usually in the area of the store that has canned chili and beans.
We used to always get oddball canned stuff like this in our stockings for Christmas. Oysters, sardines, kippers, Vienna sausages, Spam, corned beef hash, whole black olives, etc.
Like your stocking stuffers Lived in upper NE U.S got oranges, nuts in shells you had to crack, candy and small toys. Like yours better!
I loved Canned Bamboo Shoots! Delicious 🤤
Sardines, Kipper Snacks I love them.
Dad transplanted from Gloucester to the Bay Area and had Kippers (Herring) standing at the kitchen sink. Too strong for me.
3:30 While not mentioned by name, the earliest reference I can find to Underwood's Deviled Ham is in Owen Wister's novel, _The Virginian_
Wister described the canned ham product's distinctive lurid red demon complete with hooves and tail as being available in 1870s Wyoming.
He also wrote about canned tomatoes as a source of water in a pinch when potable water was not available.
Thanks for the ideas. :)
Love the canned bread 💕👍💕
Smoked oysters are a regular pizza topping option in all of the pizza takeaways in my old home town Kitimat, B.C.
It's not without it's charm & is pretty tasty to boot mixed up with the "usual" pizza toppings, eh?
*word of advice if you try this pizza topping*
Just eat the smoked oyster whole. Don't bite one in 1/2 then look at what you just bit into and what is left on the pizza and thinking that is looking like something you shouldn't eat.
I LOVE smoked oysters but I’ve never heard of them on a pizza! Did they use traditional red sauce or something else, like maybe a white garlic sauce?
@@renegadetwinkie3832 It was the same house tomato sauce that was on all of the pizzas that the various pizzerias were selling. It was treated as just another topping and added like any other of the "additional toppings" which is the category the smoked oysters fell into like added onions, extra cheese, extra sauce, etc. . Smoked oysters on a white sauce pizza sounds great!
Rolands Seafood Antipasto was a true delight.
I can't find anywhere anymore.
Recent? Brown bread been on the shopping list for over 50 years in my household. Especially for Thanksgiving.
I love canned tamales
Smoked oysters are delicious with crackers.
Deviled Ham was awesome. I don't know about now. I remember having this when I was a kid. I thought it was delicious.
No soldier will go into field without it.
I used to love it as a kid. Tried it recently, just wasn’t the same. May try to make my own.
My daughter is picky about what she eats but she will try anything at least once. She’s been eating smoked oysters since she was like two. I grew up eating smoked oysters and smoked mussels during Christmas. I always have some on hand at home now, as an adult. Mmmmm!

Smoked Oysters are a popular party food in Australia. Very tasty on crackers.
I never had a can of whoop ass !!!!!!
Love boiled peanuts 🥜
My son and my daughter in law love boiled peanuts. Boiled peanuts and Brussel sprouts are the only things that I will not eat
99 Cents Only had the beef flavor today,
I got 8 cans. Oh, canned tamales. They
usually only have the chicken, but I like
the beef ones better.
One you need to try, kippered herring.
steve
I love kippers!!!😋😋
The smoked Polar Sardines I love but rinse the refined olive oil, and the smoked flavor is still adequate,
I just picked up a can of Underwood Deviled Ham, and there was also a Underwood Roast Beef Spread and a Underwood Chicken Spread so one can each of those as well, seems they were out of the rattlesnake (awww) so yes...I like to live dangerously ;)
The rattle snake I tasted was horrid. It tasted sweet but not a good sweet.
Haven't had brown bread since the Early 70s mmmm very good
05:40 The Haggis is in the fire for sure! - Montgomery Scott, Chief Engineer USS Enterprise NCC-1701
CANNED MENUDO IS MY FAV
Turning this around a bit, it's funny that some high-falutin' restaurants in Boston serve tinned seafood as a high-falutin' gourmet item.
I grew up in Texas...most of my girlfriends were Mexican (I eventually married a Panamanian) Tamales were always a festival food...Christmas and News Years especially...Mexican tamales are great...But Panamanian Tamales (much like other Central American counties) are better!!! The masa is smoother, there is chicken, olives, capers, raisins...and wrapped in a banana leaf instead of a corn husk...But I still also like Mexican tamales...
if it is food... let me at them! sardines with ritz crackers. cute glass with a few shrimp surround frozen serving if shrimp cocktail always has lots of sauce left over; add can of medium size shrimp.
I wish I knew of one or two stores that I could shoo for these awesome morsels of canned food. I seek the unusual for my belly. 😊
Again...I'm from Texas...and yes, I've eaten Rattlesnake...You can get it at the Texas State Fair...and even at the Pensacola Interstate Fair...Tastes like chicken...
Love smoked oysters.
In addition to Cougar Gold cheese Amul cheese from India is also canned and it is quite popular in India and with diaspora from India throughout the world.
At 6:58 ...Who doesn't like smoked oysters???? Both my daughter and I love them (we also love raw oysters...we shared a dozen raw oysters on Nov 12, 2022..my 60th birthday!!)
Boiled baby is another British delight.
Cougar Gold cheese is AMAZING!!!!!
If you don't like canned smoked oysters, then I doubt the future of our friendship.
Go Cougs! Yes, Cougar Gold is excellent!
I tried canned Silk Moth Pupae. Once. They were on sale at the Korean supermarket. That's my weirdest canned food adventure.
They need to be roasted until crispy.
Not sure if this or snake take ... the cake in this discussion.
At 9:06 ...Holy Crap!!!! When I first moved to Florida in 2003, the first thing I saw was Boiled Peanuts...What??? I'm from Texas where peanuts were roasted...at first, I thought you ate the boiled peanuts with the shell...I was wrong...intestinally I was wrong...Later, I ate them shelled...meh...roasted is better...
9:04 All I have to say is NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO I tried boiled peanuts before and the smell alone makes the experience absolutely abysmal it feels like I ate sweaty testicles it is that bad so NO I would rather DIE than try that again.
@@ghostladydarkling3250 I still don't trust it I worked at a gas station where some people bought this daily and it smelled like someone just dipped sweaty socks in pickle juice
I've had cougar, never cougar cheese.
New England.. so are my feet "new hand"?
Thumbs up Great video! The person who is reading this comment, I wish you great success, health, love and happiness 💖
Deviled ham (DIEBLITO) is and was super famous in Venezuela, its always eating with corn tortillas (AREPAS) also with Frank Red hot and mayo, delicious 😋 but due to political restrictions is not available as before in the country.
I love Peck’s Devilled Ham Spread, on toast, with ketchup.
While I haven't had canned rattlesnake, I'd think that the bones would be as easy to eat as those of canned Salmon. Now I have to get some to find out.
Aaaaand...?
Cougar Gold was named after one of it's developers (in a contract with the US government to produce a canned cheese in WWII), Dr. Matt Golding, Go Cougs!
"American food authorities BEEF with haggis-"
I see what you did there 😏
If you can't pry the Truffle out of the jaws of your pig, what are we even doing here??

Canned butter is great out of the can.
Where did Mashed girl go? Tell me..

What trimester are you in?
I Will Never Eat Canned Rattlesnake.
Go cougs!
I've eaten spotted dick in a can...It's very good..."Dick" is a British name for a dog...thus..."Spotted Dog"...Because of the raisins...
Did your channel just recommend someone warm the contents of one of the products within a can? I thought cans needed to stay out of microwaves.
They said to either warm it in the microwave or boil it still in the can. If you're going to boil it, leave it in the can. If you're going to microwave it, everyone knows to remove it from the can.
Wow. You called out Cougar Gold! That cheese is delicious. One of my very favorites. Best price is at the main campus in Pullman, WA.
Hormel tamales are also dog food.
Smoked oysters and sardines are delicious
Yeah, no
"In British English".......so, you mean English then.
