Well yea.. it was the way they killed that man that's fkd up. That's why they rioted.. I knew a man that was a police officer at this time. He said cops would joke about the incident.. theyd say.. sink him in the bayou instead of cinco de mayo.. bc of how they threw him in the buffalo bayou. Crazy shit
Debbie Quintania Ramirez why do certain Latinos have the mindset that they always need to compare themselves to blacks when talking about these incidents? Do some research and you’ll see blacks and Latinos both get screwed in America. That’s why this summer I saw Latinos supporting us at BLM rallies and blacks , including myself came out to show support at immigration rallies this summer.
I imagine the Trumpists of the era had a field day with this. "Just shut up and take it" is what the Trumpists (then and now) tell those outside their racial demographic. And when people fight back, the Trumpists go "see? SEE?!". Trumpists/Proud Boys are the modern day brownshirts, and just like Germany in the 1920s and 30s, people listening to the extremists.
I was there at Moody Park during the Cinco de Mayo. Around six, my then boyfriend was told to get me away because there would be an angry mob. We teenagers knew that Mexican Americans were treated worse than animals by the cops in the 1970's. They love to beat handcuffed people they took in custody. Eventually HPD sent cops to my school to pacify us, but we teens knew they didn't care about us. Their visit to my school was not well received, especially when they said, that they were "taking responsibility". Yeah right, they were full of £π?#%! None were seriously held accountable.
I grew up in Houston had to be six when this happened, I remember hearing Gil Scot Heron name and didn't know why, didn't know about this part of our city's history.
For those of you not from Houston, one year earlier they handcuffed a Mexican American that was doing nothing besides being brown and they beat him silly and I could be wrong on the last detail but I heard they shot him in the head... but for sure they through him in the bayou with the handcuffs and let him drown. This was fresh on people's mind. I heard Torres was a regular neighborhood Mr. Rogers helping all kids and old folks and does anyone know if he was a black belt or something like that. I also heard he whipped 2 or 3 cops asses real bad and that was why they killed him. Nonetheless I will always love Mexican Americans that came before me and had to endure very harsh times from Houston to all the South Texas towns all the way to the valley... we are a strong people who for the most part have always had some hate towards us and our ancestors. I love all people and I mean all... but don't hate me because I'm of Mexican ancestry... makes zero sense... we all can offer something to each other.
Eric Casarez Torres was a martial arts expert trained by the military but of course when your really under the influence it becomes useless if he hadn't been really drunk that night I think he would still be alive today.
@@joemartin1253 thanks for the info hermano. Maybe he would have been someone great and a martyr for the Mexicanos in Houston and all of Texas. God bless and be safe.
I was really good friends with a cop who jointed the force right after Vietnam.. he remembers this like it was yesterday.. he said the police used to taunt the Hispanic people behind this murder. Since it happened on cinco de mayo.. he said police would laugh at them and say no it wasnt "cinco de mayo".. it was "sink em in the bayou." So you can imagine how the fuse was ready to blow come the one year anniversary. The stories that man told me from the 70s 80s and even 90s were unbelievable!
And I dont think he was shot.. he never mentioned that anyway.. just beat badly and thrown into the bayou with hands bound behind him.. you're pretty much guaranteed to drown.
I grew up in Corpus Christi and remember the name JOE CAMPOS TORRES, but didn’t really know what it was about. Now I know. The newsrooms of that era sure were overwhelmingly Anglo!
Boy those were the good old days. I don't mean what those police did, but people had a good incentive to act right back then. Those police took it too far, but , criminals do need a bit more punishment than jail. Oh and i was around back then and lived close to this.
An ugly cinco de mayo celebration is when the police killed Torres a year earlier
urbanoutlaw yes . 1yr probation and $1 fine . Where was our justice ? Why didn’t his family get compensated like Rodney King?

@@debquinram1 No cell phones with cameras in 1977. Thank god that we have them now. It’s much harder to sweep these incidents under the carpet.

Dawg, he drove over that cop. This Houston riot is dope.
To this day it's still the biggest riot in Houston history.

RIP Macario Ramirez (Casa Ramirez - Heights 19th St ) a true man of the people.
To this day I always expect to hear that music At the beginning of eyewitness news
Al Ham's "Move Closer To Your World", that is. Still used on ABC 7 in Buffalo, NY; ABC 6 in Philly & Wilkes-Barre, PA.
That music was used in my hometown too.
I was there as a Kid and experienced it first hand it was like a War Zone my God😣

@@joemartin1253 Oh, thanks for the correction!
Wonder why they didnt go into detail for what caused the riot ?
ABC 13 was just as much capable of supporting the violent cops. Definitely not neutral
The brutal death of Joe Campos Torres and the slap of the wrist sentences the charged police officers received including a $1 fine
The Naughty Nawf since 70s lol
NORTH CENTRAL, THE HEART OF NORTHSIDE.
They don't show when the large wave of people attacked the cops and made them run.
