- The 3rd Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment was a unit of “Buffalo Soldiers” - Black enlisted men, commanded by White officers.
At Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas, are 17 headstones in a row. They are unusual markers in what they don’t show. There is a story behind these 17 headstones. It is a story of racial tensions that boiled over into one of the most notorious mutinies in American military history. It is the story of the largest mass court martial and executions in the history of the U.S. Army. As a result of the first hurried executions, the Army ordered all future death sentences to be reviewed before they could be carried out., forever changing military justice.
On Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022, VA and Army leaders will unveil a historical interpretative sign at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery that tells the story of these soldiers.
I grew up in Houston and was never taught about this chapter of our city's history.
I'm a Houstonian and I've always known about it, but until very recently it was known as the Camp Logan Riots.
I think the contrast between the experiences of you two, living in the same city, is representative of the unbalanced - if not altogether intentional - teaching of true U.S. history to its citizens. In retrospect, it seems the most valuable learning for most Americans over the past two decades is the revelation that the traditional elementary through high school "history" curriculums were designed with promotion of supremacist propaganda as the goal, as opposed to unvarnished truth.
An accurate presentation - to a point. The Houston Police Department deliberately prodded and provoked these soldiers until some lost military discipline. Mainstream Texas political opinion in July-August 1917 was strongly against the training and garrisoning of colored soldiers in Texas. In the aftermath of the mutiny, Texas lost the political argument when the Wilson Administration required the training of colored soldiers at every camp in the nation. But the 3rd Battalion of the 24th Infantry -- and our nation -- lost much more. The Houston Mutiny is a story about the consequences of a community united pushing selfish unrealistic politics, not of random individuals acting badly.

They fired on a car with two white occupants, but let a second car with black occupants leave unharmed.They marched nearly two and a half miles, all the way to the San Felipe district, before they encountered any police officers.Two policemen were killed immediately, and one later died of wounds he had sustained.
The soldiers stopped a car carrying two policemen, who were disarmed and shot. A few blocks later, an open-topped car carrying a man in an olive-drab uniform approached the column. Believing this to be the uniform of a Houston mounted policeman, the soldiers opened fire only to discover later that they had killed Captain Joseph W. Mattes of the Illinois National Guard. The killing of a military officer drove home the seriousness of their actions and the pending consequences. Mattes' body was found mutilated to the point of being nearly unrecognizable.
By the time the shooting had stopped, 17 people were dead (four police officers, nine civilians, and two soldiers).[12] One soldier and a police officer later died from wounds sustained during the riot, and one soldier died from wounds sustained during his capture the next day.

It was wrong for the local residents and police to treat these men as anything less than soldiers serving America, but mutineeing and murdering locals as a mob wasn't justified. These men weren't heroes and it's wrong to portray them as such.

Octogenarian widower here whose mother and father lived in Houston at the time. When they were alive they told all of us children just what happened and it wasn't pretty. Here's why! The gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. If we are to follow him, we must do the same thing. Death= repentance, Burial = baptism, and resurrection = being filled and rising again from the dead and walking in the newness of life. That's what Acts 2:38 is. It harmonizes with Matthew 28:19, and all the other salvation scriptures.
