I can finally put faces on this important story in the fight for freedom and equality inGreater Houston. Without a doubt, this event has impacted the overall culture of the city. It's part of the reason why Houstonians are normally so nice. I've walked that path from Memorial Park into Downtown several times in my life. Taken the same path on a bicycle at least a dozen times. There are still stacks of bricks in the woods, an old fireplace, a concrete foundation. Buried deep in the woods, that history is still there. There's even a few trees with musket balls still lodged into them. My spirit is deeply connected to that space. The Arboretum was my meditation spot since my young teenage years. I know every inch of that park. Most people are just passing through. They've never seen our resident red coyotes. My dog and I got an opportunity to introduce ourselves one night. I've run countless miles on that jogging path - in the middle of the night. I kept hearing stories about joggers getting mugged. Not on my watch The story of the riots and the resulting massacre was ever present during my work outs. Every firework show, I was at the Houston Police Officers Memorial. I've always taken a moment to reflect on the events of that day and night. What always struck me is the distance and the time it takes to walk from the camp to downtown. They had time to think it over, plan, coordinate. This wasn't a crime of passion. It was a crime of raging resentment. It was a reclamation of honor. The Army soldiers truly believed that they were doing what's right, so did the police officers. These very same broken bridges exist today. Every judgement, every dismissal, a piece of the bridge falls away. No progress made. We still can't kill each other to fix it. We can build walls or we can build bridges. Historically speaking, bridges bring wealth. Walls bring conflict.
I believe that the strongest bridges begin with respectful and genuine conversations. So, I want to sincerely thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts. You have taught me something today and I am grateful. Please continue to share your knowledge and perspectives. Words have power to create lasting peace when they are paired with kindness.
As a former soldier I have never looked at an African-American as someone that should be frowned upon I have many black friends and a lot of them I consider family and I never heard of this incident until after I was already in my late twenties. I still look at this as a travesty and a serious miscarriage of Justice. No person of any race or religion or Creed should ever have to go through intolerance like this and I'm not only sad for just a black folks but also any person that might have gotten shot that night it just happened to be in the wrong place the wrong time. It's time to wake up people and realize just because a person is of a different color or nationality they're not your enemy they're not your inferior they are your equal and they are just as important to everyday Life as you are. I was raised to be tolerant of others from all walks of life, because peace only works if everybody practices it and if the only thing you're looking for is troubles and strife that is what you're going to find.

What are you even talking about? He literally said the laws were wrong but that's how the city and police department justified it. Then he asks "did they learn anything from it?" and emphatically says "NO".
Love this story. Didn't know about this before. I'm 52 years old. They need to teach this in schools. And take out all the lies they teach our children in the history books
