  • When the weather turns cool, my mind turns to a nice, warm, hearty bowl of soup. And what could be easier than making some delicious Split-Pea and Potato soup in my Instant Pot electric pressure cooker? Not much! Here's how simple it is:
    6 c water
    1 lb green split peas
    3 small russet potatoes, chopped
4 large carrots, cut into fat coins
    1 medium onion, chopped
    4 stalks celery, chopped
2-4 cloves pressed garlic, depending on your taste preference
    1 t. liquid smoke (optional)
    1 t. salt (optional)
Add all the ingredients to your Instant Pot (or any other electric pressure cooker) and make sure the vent pipe is set to "sealing" rather than "venting." Press the "manual" button and adjust the time down to 15 minutes. After processing, allow the pot to come back down to normal room pressure on it's own (quick release is not recommended for safety with this soup.) Enjoy!
Don't have a pressure cooker? No problem! You can make this on the stovetop. Bring 10 c of water to a boil in a large pot. Add all the ingredients and return to a boil, then bring down to a simmer, stirring occasionally, for 45 minutes or until done.
My name is Heather and I'm from Portland, Oregon. I am eating a plant-based, whole foods, unprocessed diet, with no sugar, oil, or salt, to take off weight and regain my life. I once weighed over 436 lbs and have released over 238 lbs eating this way and walking for exercise. I call my channel The Butterfly Effect because I believe that all the small choices you make, over time, add up and have a huge effect on your life. I wanted to show people like me who have 100, 150, 200 or more pounds to take off that it can be done and we can do it together. I am far from perfect and have struggled with compulsive eating and been overweight for all of my life, but there is hope for me and there is hope for you too. What can you do, today, to bring you closer to your goals tomorrow? Please consider giving my videos a thumbs up, commenting and subscribing. I would be incredibly grateful for your support on this journey!

Gigantic Thank You. Exactly what I have been looking for. No salt split pea soup. Maybe I will add lemon juice when I am ready to eat. Your vid is terrific. You are so detailed. I am so impressed that you included how to prepare this dish if you don't have a pressure cooker, like me. I am going to the supermarket , buy what I need, and then watch your vid again and cook. So sick of high salt, buttered, ham (more salt), turmeric, etc. Yours even includes potatoes. THANK YOU. You are terrific.

Alternative to liquid smoke would be some nice quality smoked paprika, chipotle (if you like the heat) or take some peppers and eggplant and char them on the stove... remove the skin and use... smoke.. without the smoke.

This is terrific! I just made the McDougall recipe two days ago...on the stove top...it's a little different but basically the same...one interesting ingredient they included...and I really I like is adding 1 table spoon of Dijon mustard...really adds something. I'll add some liquid smoke next time...(it's not in the recipe of theirs that I used) and I'll make it in the Instantpot next time too. It is my favorite soup ...so tasty and satisfying.

I just got one of these pots, split pea is my fav, but I never made it with potato. I will now! Thank you for sharing your recipe.
I like that you didn’t use salt, and that you used four cloves of garlic! I’ve watched quite a few split pea videos this morning, and some didn’t use ANY garlic! Like, none! I don’t trust those people!
One thing you may want to consider is to press the garlic first; like, before you even get anything else ready. Allowing garlic to sit, alone, at room temperature, for 15 minutes after chopping/mincing/pressing boosts the benefits enormously; the enzymes need time to fully activate. Google for a better, more scientific explanation. It’s habit now, so I don’t “wait” on the garlic, I press it before I’ve even decided what I’m going to cook!

I love split pea soup and was shocked when I found out how simple and easy it is to make. Tried making it in my instant pot and it turned out great. I also used just a drop or two of liquid smoke! I have never put potatoes in, but that looks like a really good idea.

I remember the pressure cooker that my mother used (it might have been her mother's, i.e., very old). I remember always being afraid of it (no, no nightmares), even tho I never knew of any accidents (explosions). One reason I use the InstantPot is because of the feedback from the machine that tells me there is a good seal. BTW, thanks for the recipe: I'm going to make this tonight.

I noticed that no oil was included as an ingredient. I find that you need a small amount of oil to prevent foaming of the dried peas as well as to meld all of the flavors and seasons one may add. I found this recipe as I am ready to put up a pot of pea soup right now in my pressure cooker.

    • @sunnygirl87
      @sunnygirl87 6 лет назад

Leslie Felner if you allow your soup beans, etc to release naturally, foaming is not an issue. I cook in my Multi cooker and have no issue and no need for oil.

You say in your video, 10 cups of water, but the recipe says 6 cups. Which is it for the Instant Pot?

When I used 10 cups of water, it was too thin for my liking so now I do 6-7 cups.
