I see so many casual players complaining about pencil, but I never actually encounter pencil in casual matches.

    • @Bluebatstar
      @Bluebatstar 2 месяца назад +79

Yeah, Pencil is a really tough weapon at casual levels and Tacticooler isn't that strong in low level either. Pencil requires really good aim since you have to hit 2 shots to kill, so most players at that level are just not good enough to make it stronger then most other, easier picks. I think most casuals that complain about it just do so because top level players do and they're echoing what they hear.
I'm extremely casual and at my level Splashdown in Splat 2 was really good since nobody could cancel it. The meta at low and top level is wildly different.

I find that pencil is a weapon that only works in certain ranks. I play A rank, and pencil is a nightmare there, but if you are playing in lower ranks, then pencil just doesn't work, because tacticool is poor in low ranks

I've always held the opinion that blue pencil is a weapon kit that's basically minmaxed for comp play. Since Cooler inherently requires a level of coordination to reach the full use of, sprinkler is sprinkler, and the main weapon is good but not oppressive in a vacumn.
That said, I DO think Pencil is a bit too min-maxed when you ARE talking competitive play. But I agree that it's less problematic when you're talking low/mid level casual play

    • @chunkymonkey7983
      @chunkymonkey7983 2 месяца назад +1

@@HolyAlondite Yes I totally agree that the weapon needs to be nerfed. I tried a couple matches with it on Brinewater Springs zones and it was absolutely broken. I think that, if they fixed the map design problems, then maybe the weapon wouldn't need to be nerfed (although I do still think that the paint output would be overtuned), but that is pretty unlikely to happen now. The much safer bet would just be to nerf the weapon's paint, and nerf cooler a good bit.
I see so many people complain about thingg that doesn't even effect them though (in general, not only Splatoon) just because other people are complaining and they want to join in. Obviously for smaller things, not talking about actual big issues that are dangerously affecting the world/other people.

Not sure if this is a hot take but they should bring back Bomb Sniffer from Splatoon 1 and have it reworked as Sub and Special Sniffer. It would be able to mark and highlight bombs and other sub weapons like squid beakon, splash wall and point sensor from a distance and through walls. I don't see how that would be all that useful except for the ink mine sniffing. Enemy beakons can be seen from the overhead map, big bubblers can be seen from the same map, and big bubblers and wave breakers are pretty easy to see in normal gameplay. Also, things like splash walls aren't really that important to need to see through walls. And giving a player too much visual information by showing all of that stuff through walls could just overwhelm the player and clutter the screen.
Also, ink mine is already generally considered pretty weak. And you can detect them if you paint over enemy ink first.

My hot take is that no less than 80% of the walls should be paintable on *every* PvP map. This leaves room for exceptions such as walls for spawn not being inkable, but everything else should be paintable. That was where the first game had its core identity and it should be no less true here. Think back to something like the hot springs map I can't be bothered to remember the name of. There are so few paintable walls there that I genuinely see no reason for that map to exist. It is an absolute failure, in my opinion, of *Splatoon* map design.

My hot take is that Splatoon as a franchise would benefit from a single player focused spinoff - be that a survival shooter where you're gradually expanding your territory via inking and building a base that preserves your ink at night, or something more mechanically divorced from the core game experience but still building off of the ink based territory control concept - I think the ink concept would work really well in a tactical shooter such as X-Com or Mario + Rabbids.
Also that Salmon Run is held back by being a side mode rather than a spinoff since Salmon as a spinoff would allow the entire balance of the game be derived from Salmon's needs rather than being the side mode in a competitive shooter, side modes based around Salmon Run that aren't done as events, and so forth (and also a campaign mode devoted to teaching the fundamentals of Salmon would benefit... So many people who play Salmon Run. Even into low EVP there are still... Luring inconsistency... issues.

As a zones hater I agree with the static objective argument but have my own points to make. I think because of the horrible splatoon 3 map design most matches on zones just turn into "cap the zone and lock out the enemy team for the next minute", it's boring if I'm the one doing it and frustrating when it's happening to me. I think the game is at its best when a person is limiting their options in order to push objective because it creates an interesting dynamic, and at least in lower level play if someone's doing bad with their weapon they can just pick up the rainmaker or play tower duty and still contribute to the team.

  • @Prismark

Splatoon 3's update system gives me the feeling that they are procrastinating genuine issues and then they buff either by adding damage or lower the points needed to get a special. (My personal take for most shooters would be that a lot of problems would be fixed if almost all of them need 10p+ for specials yet they lower those too so I am quite unsure what they use as reference/reason to make some changes or don't change something.)
I personally hope my theory comes true and while we won't have content expansions like new Catalogs and Stages, we get a 3rd year of events as well as 3rd weapon sets which come in waves throughout a season.

The fact that it's stationary means it's simply a lot less fun than all other modes when one team has an advantage. Here's my take: Tri-Stringer actually has amazing painting utility in certain situations that I think most people don't fully realize. As long as you make a wide sweep with uncharged shots, you can create an absurd horizontal barrier or vertical enemy blockade in only a second. If people took advantage of this and if Toxic Mist got buffed to cover a wider area, Tri-Stringer would probably be taken a lot more seriously.
That being said, if it got either Drapid or Sbrella's kits, that would make it so much better on the offensive side.

heres my hot take: Big Swig Express isnt a bad weapon, in facts its really good. In certain modes and maps where a lot of players are in one area Big Swig's huge area of effect and painting power is incredibly powerful, it deals a minimum of 40 damage at a pretty good speed. Also having the kit of dart and rain is amazing for it, like big swigs vertical flick, dart has a lot of range and it gets really easy to hit the dart due to it having a similar hitbox with Big Swigs vertical flick, and rain helps it control even more area than it already can. Sure the weapon can struggle getting its own kills but thats not whats its made for, its made for chip damage and stealing kills form your friends on the other side of the map.

I honestly don't think that such a take was a bad one. I think it has some merit, but not in the way they presented it.
For instance, there may be some weapons that, in theory, are better than the current meta if someone took the time to get really good with them. The problem is, the time investment is too great and would require taking time away that would better be spent practicing and getting better at what is already proven to be very good. In other words, the return on time investment for getting better at an off-meta weapon is lower than the return on time investment of simply practicing what is already meta.
Thus it appears as if those weapons are never tried.

Reposting my take from the community post cuz I feel like it's worth discussing
Angle Shooter/Line Marker is a good concept for a Sub and any buffs it gets should focus more on that concept than making it good in the same way as a Bomb
Rather than upping its damage or paint, drastically increase the distance it travels and make it so it bounces off or passes through players instead of stopping when it hits one, allowing for ricochet shots that can hit multiple people around multiple corners or even hit the same player multiple times
Also maybe give it a very loose homing effect (favoring bouncing in the direction of enemies) so you don't have to be a 7-head geometry whizz to have success with it

I don’t know how to balance this, but I feel like as soon as I encounter a shooter they look at me press zr and I die before I could react.

It's funny because I get a similar feeling with chargers. There's been so many times where I've visibly moved away from their weapon's pointer and still gotten splatted, even if I've moved behind a wall.

I play Blob mostly which works nicely with Squid roll but doesn't have much main weapon strafing (since I can't do sub yet) but I often use bunny hopping when a weapon will allow it. Sometimes just running in a zig zag motion can throw people off too! I try to sneak in the ink to get the jump on players but often move too soon and get splatted. i honestly just don't like zones because my two favorite weapons don't have fun playstyles on zones. vanilla explo on brinewater feels like a purgatory sentence, and if you play explo, you'll probably match with another explo. so all you get is two backliners trying to out-paint each other with the exact same weapon and special, and that gameplay loop only ends when someone runs out of ink or someone gets flanked. it's terrible. i hate it.
on the other hand, i play both painbrushes, which are fun in theory. honestly though, if you want to play a weapon with fast kill time that can hit over ledges, you can pick a slosher or a blaster. both might have worse paint, but both are a lot more ink-efficient than pb and don't have windup.

8:27 I’m not a competitive player, but I still agree with this. While it is good to go for niche, off meta picks if it just hard counters a specific team or you’re just that good at it, it’s more reliable to play something you know works. If you’re able to play Sploosh to the level of keeping up at top level, play it at top level, but it’s gonna be a lot easier and more fun for you to switch to a similar weapon that is considered high or top tier, like a Splat Roller which shares the Curling Bomb and sharking playstyle while just being better. I enjoy Splatlings as my main, but if I’m facing someone who hard beats a Splatling, I might switch to another weapon I like that beats them better, like a Slosher, and when I use Splatlings, I’m using good ones like Ballpoint and Edit and not the ones that are weak like Hydra. Pick what you like, but also pick what actually works.

Nah, gonna be honest I agree with the Zones guy for slightly different reasons. While the fighting does take place around more of the map than mid, the objective being static and stationary (outside of Bluefin) means that once one team wins said fight and has control, it leads to oppressive lockouts. With the other modes there is a chance to swing the momentum back in your favor, but in SZ, all it takes is a VShot, Gal, Squeezer etc. to hold you in spawn. And if you manage to get past them? Say hello to Mr. Eliter or Ms. Pencil who'll snipe you before you can even reach the zone.

7:22 sloshers and rollers are good at painting though; the lackluster range doesn't matter when there's a smaller amount of area you need to cover. All 3 of the weapons you listed are capable of painting large patches of turf in a single strike compared to rapid-fire weapons that always slow you down when firing, limiting the speed at which you can ink turf.

I mean, no? Literally try this for yourself. Paint for 5 seconds with splat roller or slosher in the training room, then switch to splattershot and you'll see how much more you paint. Shooters just paint better.
Also, think about how in between flicks, enemies can paint over you, while splattershot constantly outputs paint on the ground. So even if roller outputs a solid chunk of paint, by the time you can flick again, the enemy splattershot has already painted over everything.

Rotating modes is a very good system because it forces variety and creativity. Look at the competitive scene of TF2, the meta in competitive 6s HASNT CHANGED IN YEARS. Why? Simple, don’t fix what’s not broken. The 6s metagame has played 5CP and KOTH as static modes for the entirety of its lifespan, this has forced other strategies that aren’t very good on that mode but are on others completely out of the metagame making things such as spy useless. This is why people complain about 6s, it’s static and unchanging. Sure zones is the least chaotic mode and is far from the worst (IM LOOKING AT YOU TOWER CONTROL WHO’S EFFECTIVELY DIET RAINMAKER WITH A F**KING POLE). However I’d really like to see tri zone maps where holding 2 is considered a cap and 3 ticks faster, it would shake up the KOTH feel of zones and make it a bit more unique to play, just something a bit different. I personally think that modern rainmaker and clam blitz are great modes, plenty of variety plenty of options to play around and a unique take on dynamic objectives that force different kinds of team play(although every map should have at least 2 check points gotta have options) tower however is TOO static, it plays like rainmaker but it’s just not that deep as far as positioning is concerned and it ends up being really bland without the option to move more effectively on the tower or get on it easier. I personally think it would be better if the tower had more space to stand on, (like the one challenge they did) to add some depth to just standing on the tower it would fix all of the static feeling issues with the mode

New take incoming: I HATE how respect based this game feels, in regards to stuff like specials, some subs, some weapons... Feels like I'm constantly being displaced on the map since I have little choice but to respect so many things, instead of being able to contest them in a more nuanced power struggle.
A reality of making everything baseline "okay/good", which means Reefslider, Splashdown and Crabtank cancel don't feel as good as they used to/should since it's high risk and because I HAVE to respect it, oftentime little reward e.g. getting obliterated by the Splashdown fists even with a cancel.
Really wish there were more options for contesting, I loved Splashdown cancel in Splatoon 2 even as an inkbrush main!
A spinoff that focuses more on movement, and more interesting interactions across mains, subs and specials would be amazing, like a predominantly single player character action with a sprinkle of Jet Set/Bomb Rush/Tony Hawk/SSX, so we dont have to worry about balance and making everything baseline useable, and instead just FUN and DEPTH!

The ultimate hot take is that Splatoon 3, despite being fundamentally based on Chaos, is terrible at expressing that theme in its gameplay- specifically, its main gameplay mode. Splatoon 1 is a far better example of chaotic Splatoon gameplay- I'm one of the few people who played back when that game was still active, and I know firsthand from playing that game for basically its entire lifespan that it was exceptionally chaotic, in a very similar way to early Overwatch. Instant invincibility from Bubbler and Kraken were the most memorable examples of that, but there was also Killer Wail, which could have the impact of rendering effectively half the map inaccessible on stages like Port Mackerel, Inkstrikes, which could be used globally to similar effect, both of which weakened snipers dramatically through displacement; and, of course, literally everything had higher range then, making everything feel more impactful. In Splatoon 1, you could FEEL the range difference between Jet Squelcher and Splattershot in a way you simply can't after the Splatoon 2 range reduction. Even something as short-range as Carbon Roller or Luna Blaster was still long enough range to be a devastating force, and didn't rely on being literally on top of enemies to splat reliably. Splats happened more often, and the state of the match changed almost every single splat- at least, in mid-level play where I was- and that was what made it so good. But the series can never recapture that, because it places too much emphasis on competitive play to reach that level- that level of fluctuation in gameplay isn't sustainable for an organized competitive system, so modern Splatoon can't be like that, because of how objective-focused modes are so much more popular. Ironically enough, despite Splatoon 3 being fundamentally designed around Chaos, the gameplay is far more rooted in Order and structure than the game that originated it, which lacked that Chaos thematic.

❗️(MY HOT TAKE) ❗️I don’t think anyone else has noticed this, but does anyone know that jellyfish at the top of the stairs in the lobby has nobody thought about how this dude could get a use in the next update I mean you gotta think about it like this. remember the table turf tables were up there, but they weren’t usable at the beginning of the game But then they got a use later on. the table, turf tables, and all the other interactive things in the lobby, have a yellow nameplate on the floor in front of them the locker room, the lobby terminal, grab and go where Judd lays even the DJ booth has an inkling language written that says DJ booth, but also that jellyfish has a nameplate on the floor and if you look at the counter where he’s making the coffee there it seems to be these packets that are color-coded, red, yellow and blue and my idea is maybe this could be a way we could have custom weapon kits so my hot take is it could be like crab and go but instead of abilities, money multiplier and XP multipliers you can just request to have a special attached to your weapon for a certain amount of matches and this could also go for subs to I mean what’s the point of even putting them there if they don’t get a use I mean imagine if Nintendo put the table turf tables up there but never gave us the option to actually use them now that would be just stupid also one more thing there could be a special animation when you’re character jumps out of the spawn point at the beginning of the match your weapon could flash and then have a steamy coffee effect so your team and foes know that you’re weapon has been modified maybe even the player icon in the top of the screen could show a little coffee steam affect coming off of it. Maybe the color of the steam depends on what special you have changed your weapon to have or sub I mean it’s not full out custom kits but you can customize your own kit and use it for just a little bit because I feel like having full out customization for weapons, like only having a select few specials and subs to choose between on one weapon would probably make people upset if their favorite special or sub wasn’t on their favorite weapon as an option this gives players a little bit more freedom with kit customization, I don’t know how it would work either having a ticket to be able to switch your special or sub or having to pay with coins I imagine it would only let the player use that customized weapon for only so many matches, and then the effect would wear off and return to normal there also could be a cool down between when they can customize a weapon so after they customized one and use it, maybe there could be a 1 to 2 day cool down before they can ask for another weapon customization just so you don’t join a match and everyone has got modified weapon and it becomes absolute chaos. (sorry if this comment was long) I just wanted to put my idea out there and prochara, if you read this and take my idea into consideration, that would be really really amazing

the zones subject i would like to agree on ithe fact that i like the idea of the zone being harder to control for the closer you get to knockouts is a point that i have thought a lot about myself, its just that i find myself getting annoyed that i cant get any kind of advantage to come back on a mode like zones where i do on the other modes because it is just that much easier to stop someone when you have the ground and spawn time advantage.
HOT TAKE for next time: I think the tower routes are waaaaaaay too small and that getting far in them isnt even much of an achievement. i think they should be extended so that it takes a lot longer to push the tower forward and make it harder to achieve victory by knockout. Also with these longer routes, they could make the tower visit more parts of the map because some sections just get really left out by most players and you really dont get to take advantage of each of the unique positions for defending.
ANOTHER HOT TAKE: this links to my last one is that, aside from blitz, i think its too easy to get knockouts now. ive played this series for a long time now and i find myself getting bored from getting knockouts or getting knocked out. it should be harder to achieve in order to promote longer games. I dont know what to do with ship shape rainmaker, but other than that i think that all modes could be altered to make knockouts feel more rewarding.
FINAL HOT TAKE: Chara vids are really entertaining and Chara is a cool guy

I agree with all this lol.
Zones needs checkpoint zones I’d say-zones further into enemy territory you have to control in additional to the middle zone to continue scoring. It would make it so th have to come to you instead of it being so easy to lockout and spawn camp as can be done now.
And yeah I’ve always thought tower paths are too short but I’ve never seen anyone else say that lol. They only to like half way into the enemy spawn area, which can make it very challenging to come back sometimes I’d say as even after you respawn you have a ways to go before you can contest… similar to zones.

5:09 - this is the reason so many people think Goo Tuber is bad - it's a charger, so it should play backline. Honestly I think it plays really well in the current mid-range meta from the main weapon alone, with either sub really working well for it.
The problem is, the one time it was ever used competitively, it was solely a missile-spammer, and even then it was overshadowed by REEF-LUX. It hasn't gotten many changes aside from the UI change, so not many competitive players have given it a second thought. Having a high skill floor is a pretty big turn off for most, but I'd love to see more Squiffer players giving it a shot. It's a pretty solid aggressive charger and is the weapon I find the most fun to play.
I've seen a lot of them in solo queue ranked recently as well. I'm hoping other niche weapon picks get more players as well, as I think the game is the most fun with a little chaotic variety... As long as the matchmaking doesn't go putting all the backliners on one team, as it has been.

    • @SpaceCadet22
      @SpaceCadet22 2 месяца назад

Slight correction: I don't mean it's just competitive players not considering niche weapons, I mostly play solo queue and I think most discussions put Goo Tuber low on the tier list. Solo queue has a lot of very same-y weapon choices, and it's because the meta they see is not the experimental stuff discussed in the video.
Really I think it's less of a problem in the competitive community and more in the highly invested casual community. The players that look at those tier lists and decide they should play the meta weapons instead of experimenting with their own styles.
I'll get off the soapbox now, lol.

Carbon has better max range (bursts help with this but the verticals do give it a higher damage range than sploosh can match), a more consistent midrange kill time, and most importantly the ability to fire over ledges and low walls. For carbon, ledges are a completely separate win condition that sploosh doesn't have access to. Need to consider that when saying sploosh is a "better carbon".

Tri-stringer may not be a great example of the weapon class take, but the reeflux definitely is. It's basically just a charger that can paint, and the changes between the reeflux and chargers are almost all downgrades. Stringers need more to differentiate them from chargers and hopefully to buff them too

Very long hot take: While great in concept and a lot more fun in the short term, I don't think custom kits, or even mix-and-matching preexisting kits, would end up being a net positive for the game balance wise.
In theory, people being able to choose their subs and specials would encourage the devs to make more and better balance changes, as mains, subs, and specials would be able to be viewed standalone balance wise without being tied to their kits, such as Missiles not being too overpowered right now due to it being on no good main weapons except Diper. However, what the kit system really is is a band-aid solution for the developers so they don't have to make the game ultra balanced and can instead just get the easy way out, as if every weapon could pick its sub and special, then the meta would likely become Mario Kart in that everyone would use the same main, sub, and special that is ever so slightly better than anything else. The kit system prevents this by locking the best mains, subs, and specials to bad kits. Want to shark people with Cooler? Too bad, get Dapples Beakon lol. And if there does happen to be a broken kit combo, then there’s always the old reliable 210p that they use for every op weapon and Forge Pro. Because that’s the real threat to the meta, not vSplash. But unfortunately the reality is the Nintendo is Nintendo, and even if there were custom kits, balance changes would likely stay unchanged, which would just result in an even worse meta where everyone picks 160p Squeezer Burst Missiles. In a perfect world, every main, sub, and special would have great synergy with one another and be perfectly balanced, with the only differences being playstyle due to strengths and weaknesses. But we don’t live in that world, especially with Nintendo on the wheel, so I think the current system is the best it’s gonna be without a major change in perspective from Nintendo as a company.
With all of that said though, there absolutely should be more kits. Having so many specials is fine for the game as long as there are enough kits for them, which there aren’t, and it’s frustrating to be forced to play a weapon you don’t like just to be able to enjoy one of the newer specials, even if it does sometimes result in finding a weapon or playstyle that you enjoy, although that could easily be done in other ways. Also that's the bare minimum, if you're gonna have set kits then at least choose fun ones with synergy.

During a splatfest, I get completely rekt by a range blaster, so I decided to use the same weapon, kit and method this player used. Results : I was on a winning streak on tricolor, so, if you don’t have a solid method (especially if you play alone), just watch the others and get some inspiration.

Re: Sploosh vs Carbon: The range difference between Carbon's burst/vertical combo and Sploosh's... everything is just massive. It's like 3x the distance and can hit over ledges. Sploosh can move around more, sure, but that just compensates for the fact that it needs to basically touch you to hit you, and the weapon has literally zero game against a player on a ledge. Trizooka doesn't need to "synergize" with Carbon because it's a one-shot kill that doesn't even require you to know where the enemy is to have a >50% chance of randomly landing a pick and still works up close; it's a slaying special that helps a slayer slay.

My hot take: Sprinkler needs 3 things just to get strong
1- Instantly paint the place it is placed
2- Explode if destroyed (burst bomb damage or less)
3- Being able to place at least 2

If you want a truly hot hot take:
Side Order is absolutely carried by the Chip mechanics, but even then it's almost as bad as Splatoon 2's base Hero Mode.
This isn't me being "Hate it to be unique lol", this is genuinely my opinion.
The level design in Side Order is mind numbingly bad, with very few acceptations (specifically Hazardous levels)
Story is bland and feels like they went one direction then backpedaled off a cliff with it halfway through development.
3 of the 5 modes are feel awful to play (the exceptions being Tower and Portal)
Dialogue and gameplay is way too repetitive.
The good elements are: The Color Chips and Animations. I disliked everything else in the campaign, it did everything Octo Expansion did but far worse (rewards included).
I am ready to be torn apart, but that is my genuine opinion. I was very disappointed when I finished Side Order, just left a massive "That's it?" aftertaste.
