Something I'm doing with my TBR vets next year is a "These Books Will Self-Destruct in 12 Months" ala Becca. Read them in 2020 or unhaul them, no exceptions. You also have a lot of Halloween-specific ones, so you could do a mini readathon for yourself doing spooky reads during spring. Oh! Spooky Spring is a great name.

I saw the movie first also but knowing the twist doesn't take away from the story at all, in fact if I remember correctly you learn the twist pretty early in the book. It's more of an ethically driven coming of age story? I always find it hard to describe but there's a lot different from the movie so it felt fresh to me.

I recently read Dracula, didn't find it dull at all. It's not as scary as one would expect, it's not really a horror story in a gruesome kind of way. I would rather call it a paranormal mystery. It's told in mixed format from different perspectives, mostly through diary entries and letters, which I found quite interesting. It also tells us a lot about Victorian society and manners as well as medical ideas for physical and mental illness at the time. I gave it four stars, definitely recommend it.

I have read the underground railroad and it is amazing, it was so good because it felt maybe like a lot that one slave can go through but it felt very real and terrifying. And yes, the underground railroad is a place in it book rather than just only a group of people who help slaves but it is for me a far stretch to call that magical realism (I never use that term, so maybe I just don't understand it right) You definitely should pick it up sometime soon.

Two years doesn't sound long at all, which I guess says a lot about the state of my shelves. ;) I read Dracula this year for Halloween and really liked it! It felt much more modern than I was expecting. I listened to the Audible version with a full cast though (including Alan Cumming!), so it might be more dry in text.
I didn't like Never Let Me Go at all, the movie was better (and I watched that a couple of years after reading the book). But lots of people love the book so it's a bit of a hit or miss, I guess. :) I only read it because Joss Whedon mentioned it as one of the inspirations for his show Dollhouse.

I liked Year of the Flood a lot more than Oryx and Crake, but I read them over 10 years apart and might not remember Oryx and Crake that well... As far as I recall Year of the Flood doesn't take up where Oryx and Crake ended but is sort of like a prequel from a different perspective. It goes deeper into the world building, and focuses on characters that I found more interesting than he ones in Oryx and Crake. Dracula is indeed quite dull in my opinion! It's an epistolary novel, so if you like that sort of thing you might enjoy it thogh!

I found Oryx and Crake more compelling than Year of the Flood. Maybe MaddAddam is better, I don’t know.
