Put a piece of aluminum angle across the front of the boards. It will help keep the edge from splitting and it will hide that gap from the short board.
I was thinking a nice piece of 2' X 1/2 X 1/8 bull nosed aluminum as it will protect the edge and also work as a positive stop just in case anything ever find itself close to the edge.
Be careful with weight at all of those joints. You should have cut every full piece down to the nearest beam and then started the next piece at that same beam
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe they should provide a joist underneath each of those joints. The T&G will eventually give way if people walk over it repeatedly.
Don't forget with the bridge that you have to measure the height to cross with the door open, since it rolls up like it does. Can't wait to see what else you do with it!
A removable or gate that can swing out would be a good safety measure that wouldn’t inhibit moving of large objects. If you wanted a cool build/fab project you could make a forklift platform that nests under the chill platform that doubles as the hand rail. Would be nice for moving loads up and down also.
@@cameronb763 I did think of doing a gate but it’s so easy to remove the rail I’m not sure how necessary it would really be. May be worth doing on the other side.
The ends of the plywood is supposed to end up on a cross beam. Yes they are narrow strips and the tongues should help as well but they could bow under weight. Need to split the ends on a beam so they have support.
Would recommend putting some yellow striped tape on the inside edges of the spiral staircase where you walk by it more as a warning, as you know you'll be tired one night and bonk your head on it hard trying to walk by it. Looks great, and what a transformation. So much more storage space. Can't wait to see it fully done and furnished.
Yep, a cut up pool noodle would do wonders. The stairs maybe folded so they have no "sharp cut" edges but it's still going to hurt whacking your head on those stair treads
On the heavy load storage side I would run another layer of sheathing run perpendicular to the first layer because those small off cut joints aren't really supported and likely where the feet for shelfs will land.
I've been anticipating this all day after seeing your Instagram post haha. Super excited for you! Definitely have a similar dream shop, so its fun to watch you build yours! I would epoxy the floor on the storage side and so an office style carpet on the hangout side!

You sure have a lot of faith in a tongue joint's strength. Those unsupported end joints are going to be a problem in the future. Personally, I'd put some 1/2" or 3/4" plywood over top and screw it all together.

@@Taylordrifts Tongue and groove yes but effectively you have compression on the tongue only. The groove doesn't support anything, so only 1/3 of the plywood strength is left. We always glue all our joints in residential construction. I would glue and back-block under each of the end joints as a fix instead of using the flimsy metal bracket. Think of the load you will be putting on those joints especially those on the ends where you will be lifting things up to store.
Having just finished my own garage earlier this year, I can absolutely agree with how shop stuff just hits different. It's so satisfying to get a chance to update and change your space, for you. I had the very same reaction when I put up my first ever two post lift. Never had one, never worked with one, absolute game changer.
Next upgrade needs to be moving the compressor outside. Will save you a ton of space and not to mention the sound! Love the shop, starting on mine soon!
An idea for a new project. Add solar panels to offset you mini split usage. Trigger the inverters with switches on the compressor units. Shop looks good
For loft number 2, you could make a pair of outwards swinging gates/ rails that would constitute a safety rail when closed and can open wide towards the lifts when you have to put something there with R2, best of both world IMO. You could even weld a couple of old parts to the doors to personalize them if you want.
When you put the shelving up, add strips of the plywood under the feet of the shelves to help spread out the load. Full width, front to back. Killer setup! I'm stoked for you
I think it looks good on video, but I bet it winds up being too harsh after a while in person. A nice diffuse, warmer light would be really nice up there.

As much as he fabricates he’d be doing monthly carpet replacement, not to mention how carpet captures smells (oil, grease, gas, exhaust, welding fumes, etc.).
I suggest adding layer of thin ply running the otherway and glued down, this will add to the overall strength but also strengthen those unsupported joints.
