who would have thought a few years ago that i would be sitting here watching a dude work on a loft in his garage for entertainment. these have become some of my favorite videos.
We watch because we wish we could do what they're doing. Taylor is especially fun because he does it right. We 'sorta' live our lives vicariously through guys who do what we wish we could have but life got in the way, low pay, too many kids, etc., etc. Yes unless we so old (me) we don't have the energy AND we know our life is so totally uninteresting we'd never get off the ground with our own channel. Anyway, this full width loft once shelved up will give Taylor all the space he'll need.
Dont forget to put some steel plates under the shelves legs on the storage loft. Spread that load and save that wooden floor.
Shop is looking killer!
Good advice
When I saw all the racking shelves at the start of the video, I thought thank goodness he put an extra layer of plywood! Imagine those unsupported cuts between bracing with a shelf foot on them!
Obviously T Ray thought the same thing and added that plywood.
Need a monster refrigerator
Can we all stop and just give a quick shout out to R2? MAN PUTS IN WORK!!!!
Beep boop
R2 ftw
Yo R2 you the fork lift my dude!
It really should be R4…R2D2 was blue and R4D4 was red
I was just thinking that
That was fun, as an electrician I was cringing, but the comment section is already full. Thanks for the entertainment, the loft is coming together. Hell of a shop.
Paint the underneath side of loft flooring white to brighten up the area. Look great 👍.
Not black though! Black sucks the light out of a room fast. I painted my garage ceiling black to look more sleek, and now I have to triple up on lights to overcome it.
Gray.
Excellent idea.
Leave it to a car guy to wire his shop in DC car color codes instead of residential house wiring colors. Black for hot, white for neural and green for ground. Not red hot, black ground and white neutral. Red is for the 2nd leg of a 220v circuit.
I was thinking the same thing when they were cutting the plastic off the spools….no green? What is he going to do for ground? Oh, black like 12v DC. 😂
that and i would think it would be a good idea to use romex as thats designed for ac. the wires he used are likely rated for dc.
at the very least, im surprised he didn't (or appears that way) use any kind of sheathing to protect the wires, or for wire management that is.
If it was just networking cables, then there is no building code or anything like that for that matter as they don't get hot, that and amps/volts are so low that they don't pose any danger. that is as far as im aware of.
@@jd_railfan you don't use romex in conduit. You use what he used. Just not those colors.
@@jd_railfansolid core is residential, stranded is for automotive so he did right there. As for extra sheathing on the wires inside the conduit, it’s not required by code and would be more of a hassle than it’s worth. Sheathing is only to help with abrasion or vibration and a shop has none of that.
@@jd_railfan thhn wire is designed for use in conduits. You don’t want to use romex inside of a conduit
I think you should put up a removable chain railing on that right side for safety purposes
I agree. Three poles, three chains. Right most pole is fixed, and the other two fit into a piece of pipe welded to the front of the platform. Just lift them out and hang them off to the side when you need access.
The OSHA narc has entered the chat.
@tri00azerath Negative lmao, I'm just worried about falling accidents because I work on a catwalk and a 3 storey roof daily.
@@unathandavis falling 3 stories builds character.
@@tri00azerath 🤣🤣 without a doubt.
Green ground, white neutral, black hot!
🎉
ground can be black, as long as it's taped with phasing tape(Green).
Black is supposed to be the hot wire, not ground its not 12v
Don't forget to put some steel plates under the shelves to spread out the load. Shop is amazing!!
On minute 22:39 I saw you connecting a green wire to a black wire, being an electrician that’s something that I would never do, in 12v black is negative but in 120v ac black is load it’s like 120v positive and green I earth as negative and white is neutral
Im a long time viewer but as a commercial electrician… this hurt to watch. Anyone and everyone please don’t take any of his advice here. This would fail any inspection. While I understand it’s his shop, it’ll be caught during inspection when/if he sells the house and someone’s gonna have to have it addressed. Conduit is not strapped within 3ft of it entering/exiting boxes and not using the proper color wire. Code states that White/Gray must be neutral and the ground must be either green, green w/ yellow stripe, or bare copper. Your “hot” wire can be any color in the rainbow other than the ones previously listed. This is considered an illegal installation in my professional opinion. This is why we go to school for this stuff. We have an entire semester dedicated to the purpose grounding and that green wire. Which you not using one, puts anyone who comes to work on that system, in risk of being electrocuted.
is it also dangerous and/or illegal if he is not using the proper wire thickness (gauge) as well? i was surprised that he isn't even using romex (or related) ac electrical wiring
@@jd_railfanI am impressed that he did use 12ga , but his lighting seems to be on the same circuit as his outlets which is a fail. I am more worried about him using wego connectors and not wire nuts, and also gawd forbid someone who knows proper electrical comes in to work on this and they could be seriously hurt. I can’t tell you how many of those Chinese outlets/switches I have had fail in the last 20 years and the odds are pretty good that he will experience the same.
@@jd_railfanyes. Code is considered the *minimum* safety standard. You can go above and beyond. For the most part, you can over-size your wire all day long. (Sometimes we have to). But 12 gauge is the most common size you’ll see which is permitted for up to 20 amps. (Yes, I know the 90° column says otherwise but 90° connections don’t exist in regular off the shelf equipment) I didn’t catch exactly what kind of wire he’s using but it looked properly rated for the application. I personally would’ve gone stranded so it’s easier to pull.
As a union electrician I was puking watching this install. This is a case of "just because you can doesn't mean you should." This wouldn't pass any code inspection
You beat me to it 😂. I've worked with enough electrians both union and nonunion. That was big time fail.
That over stuffed box of junctions needs a complete bomb job.
Put kick boards around your loft areas, will stop you accidentally stepping off the edge or kicking something off and hitting something/someone below.
Get some of that funky skate grip tape you love on those stairs! loving the progress as always!
It’s insane how much you can inspire someone to build things and go outside of their comfort zone to learn new trades. Hats off to you Taylor!
That fork lift was one of the best purchases lol.
listening to you guys bicker while you work is great. Reminds me of working in the shop with my best friend. Good times.
The mini container is the cutest shit I've ever seen
Man that’s looking real spiffy dude. Also stoked to hear the word podcast multiple times. That would be sick!
For someone who doesn’t bend much conduit, you’re doing an excellent job! Love the shop build updates.
I wheel table for the loft would be so perfect
Love the content, glad to see the shop really coming together.... now all you need is a Neon light that says Jibber Jabber Lounge for the hang out area.
Loving the progress on the lofts and the shop. Would love to see an episode where everything gets organized even if its just one big timelapse
Your shop is filling up quite organized. Your little rest area is smart and would be even better as a Pod scene. Keep your videos coming, they are great!
Need a light switch in the chill loft. Maybe 2 (1 for just that light, 1 for whole shop when just vibing to a movie.)
Or u can put a smart breaker in with Bluetooth/wireless and save a ton of extra rewiring hassles
Flip the shoplights over your lofts so they point at the ceiling, it will diffuse the light across the ceiling and give you really pleasant light on the lofts--especially the hang out side
As a union electrician this was a hard watch 😅
I love it. Glad to see you pick up all this room, hang out area, more storage, sorting it all out. I've been doing some organnization in my own garge as well. Feels great.
New channel intro - smoke rolling out of the two lower side areas. Only those lights on. You and Josue come walking out.
Definitely needs a LS block table upstairs 👌
As someone who has done Comercial and industrial electrical work this was a very interesting watch. Good on you for learning something new though.
If you ever decide to run more conduit a torpedo level with strong magnets is your best friend and bend your offsets in the air, with the handle of the bender sitting on the floor that way you can shoot down the conduit to keep bends parallel while your making the bend.
My favorite "saga" on RUclips!!!!!!!! Keep it up. I love what the shop has become!!!!!
The shop is coming together. It’s awesome that you figured everything out with the space your given.
I'd def. paint the underside wood in the lofts light gray or white to help give it a more finished look... And those brown chairs look totally outta place should have went gray or black... But the shop in all is looking killer... It kinda sucks cause there isnt gonna be much more that you will need to do to the shop and i really like the shop build stuff as much as the car stuff... lol Keep up the cool content...
Engine block coffee table would be great up there!
Awesome garage!! Definitely mancave vibe now.
So chill, love the energy in this vid!
Put a switch on the light above the hang out lift itself as you may want to put a lamp or other lighting in that area. Gonna need a vent fan in that loft as well to expel …
If those tight 90s ever give you any trouble, my method is to use a shop vac to suck a string through the conduit and pull the wire through with the string. You can suck a light string easily enough or put a wad of paper towel on the end of a heavier string. The paper wad shoots through faster.
Time for a fridge/mini fridge up there, and couch/futon for when you just need to crash/have a buddy/buddies helping out to have a spot to crash. Love it!
Love the Project. you could try to flip the lights to the top of the beams. Might get you some nice indirect lighting
In the process of building out my shop and love this series
I love the shop upgrades! I’m getting some inspiration for the new house garage I just bought. Keep them coming!
Timber cladding around the loft would go hard with the brown chairs then get a custom garagebuiltco neon sign hung up
Saw this again and it's still good!
I've been watching from before your new house in Fla and this new garage upgrades are great !!! BTW , I really love the longer videos !!!
It's amazing that more homes don't burn down, being the way we wire homes.
I've more/less have written off wire nuts in place of Wago's from here on out!
Yea green wire is ground. Maybe get some good green 3m tape and tape the ground green.
This has been the longest week waiting for this video!!! Thanks Mr.Ray for sharing this with us
Green instead of red. Black = hot, White = neutral, Green = ground
Also he needs to attach a ground strap to each of those boxes.
I bet he bought and used those colors because he knew he would have several feet left over and thats the colors he mainly uses on his cars.
@@warrenmichael918I hope not. That's solid core which is correct for home wiring, but not for automotive where you'd want stranded. It's the colors that are wrong as red is an additional hot leg for AC 220V. I'm betting he used red for hot, white neutral and black ground since that is most similar to DC auto wiring (except for the lack of a neutral there).
@@gmcmanus663 I know his colors were wrong for normal house wiring. I dont know why but i thought he used stranded wire. Thats why i figured he bought the colors in stranded he uses on his cars. I didnt realize it was solid wire.
@@warrenmichael918That's the same thing I was thinking he used what he had and the way he's gone into the house he doesn't need a giant house or shop and literally building what's gonna be his forever
You should look up the elevator grind hard plumbing co mad e for their loft!!! Would come in super hand for just going up and down, also could store up and out of the way. So you wouldn't lose any floor space!!
Brown looks good don’t doubt yourself shop is turning out great keep it up
It would be kinda neat to put up a black curtain around the entire wall of the chill loft to hide the sprayfoam and make it feel more homey
Whoa whoa whoa. Did you say it's been 2 years already. Woww time does fly by.
Seeing this shop get love as much as the car/boat build is extremely satisfying to watch
Why no geound wire? You can use the pipe as ground but set screws arent always tight enough to have a good connection.... oh no i just saw you used black for ground. Thats a big no no. Green for ground lol
One of those devices will fail and he will learn.
@@timmummert63 well as long as it's him working on it he may remember but if he sells the house or has an electrician come do work there that's when it could cause some problems
@@MilesHolt i was just thinking of that very same thing lol
from one of the videos i've seen, it's not a good idea to use the conduits as a "ground". something to do with the way main circut panel works. one of the videos said something about never tying in neutral with ground. if the neutral wire he used inside the conduit to the new outlets were to accidenly touch the conduit, something bad can happen but again its been a while since i've seen any electrical videos regarding safety etc.
@@jd_railfan any disconnect after the main service disconnect the ground. Is bonded to the neutral so in the panel box the ground and neutral are essentially the same thing. But I still agree it's not a great idea to use the conduit as ground
Taylor, please consult an electrician. Don’t burn your shop down dude! You shouldn’t wire a house like a car
Basic outlets are so easy even a Taylor can do them. Complex switching or three phase crap is another story altogether and there your advice is warranted.
A fridge would be nice for summer.
i've done some super high end under stacker LED in the past, it's not hard, and can be done without any modification to the lift. we did 24v 5600k spotless tape in track with a centeral control box with a smart controller per lift so they could be remote controlled
Taylor Ray Pod would go crazy, 100 % would listen.
Incredible dude. So proud to see this come all together. Super inspiring Taylor. You help me keep pushing bro 🤝💪
So cool seeing it all start to take fruition.
I am surprised with your OCD that you haven’t painted your ramps red the yellow didn’t work with the Milwaukee gear
Damn good job mate! On the outlets they're Essentially ran in parallel there so if one fails it won't prevent the other from working.
Small thing that might magnify the lighting underneath the lofts would be painting just the wood and conduit white. Anyway, love the lift series
It's Looking Good Taylor
Im so happy for you to get to this point in your life. You earned bubba.
You need some colored "neon" lights under the wheel ramp areas on stacker lift shining on the cars.
The brown is a perfect contrast to the grey flooring.
That table needs a classy Christmas Carol movie leg lamp!
This has been my favourite product outside of the cars. The loft and lift como is so cool. Maybe one day. I remember back in the day of the struggle with the Mx5 and Corvette out the little garage. This was only a dream back then for you. And that fact you have managed to pull that off by simply never giving up. Really hope the newer subs go back to your older video. That's also amazing content aswell.
Love you and your content buddy. Hopefully we get to cross paths one day. Would love to shave your hand. Genuinely proud of you.
And if you made it this far try looking into wago connectee to replace the wire nuts
flexible conduit: we would use 5/8 coiled air hose and run your wire in it when we build equipment with a large movement
Add a dimmer switch for the lights above the loft so you can turn it down while up there. Instead of having to walk down and turn them off
R2 has definitely paid for itself
Paint the under loft plywood bright white. 👌🏽
Putting every single inch of the building to use. So sick
I am such a sucker for garage improvements. I just remodeled my garage but now I"m going to move to another State and have a shop built in the next year.
Taylor with a shop video after I finished watching the PDGA World Championships makes for the best Sunday all summer.
I would send the chairs back & exchange them for gray or black. Enjoying the updates!
The best part is that if you wanted, you could throw in a roll-up door for the bottom of the loft and pull cars in under the loft.
I’d get a sparky in to sign the work off mate 😂
Check those earth/ground wires 😂
You should put like a pallet wood/ shiplap wood wall up behind the chairs. Give it a burned finish to help seal it nd for looks
Gotta put those fab work skills to use and create a little walkway across the back over the roll up door
You should cut up a carpet tile and put it on top of the container table. I will keep things from sliding and take the tinny sound out when you put stuff on it.
For lights in your lift: Check out how Matt Farah runs power in his car storage lifts. He's got power cord reels run from the floor or ceiling to his stackers running power for trickle chargers. They're kept at constant tension and work with the stackers going up/down.
Now that you've got the room, you should look at getting an ArcDroid and table before you start the next build.
Good Work!
Podcast chair what?? If Taylor would start a podcast I would wastch every single episode! Jibber jabber expert!
May have missed it, but are you putting hand rails around those lofts, especially the hang out side? If someone were to ever fall off, your home owner's insurance will 100% refuse to pay and you are opening yourself up to a big lawsuit. Plus it is a code violation to not have them.
chill out Karen, he didn't put it on yet to make it easier to load the furniture there, he said it when he built it
I was confused when I didn’t see green wire, took me a sec 😂
Think its time you get a sick Neon Garagbebuiltco light for about the car car stack!
My favourite videos all day long
Loving this series! For sure add easy to remove railings its stressing me out lol
Beaten again,😊 unwrapping the seats😂😂😂
A sliding rack system like a lev rack would be killer in the storage loft😊
Taylor when are you Going to start your drag car Build
When I’m done with this.
Hell yeah @@Taylordrifts
Speaking of efficency, Maybe you could make a gate on each side of the lift so you don't have to duck under the bars all the time. Just a random thought ha ha. Love your video's man, cheers.
You could use, what i know it as, is an igus chain conduit for the lighting under the lifts.
Brown chairs with black and gray flooring? I question a lot of decisions made on colors on this channel always.
Very impressive on the pipe work Taylor coming from a fellow sparky who does this everyday
That massive bright light at the left loft would drive me crazy in 2 minutes..ok 34:05 you notice it also 🤣
