This series on Pope Pius XII’s involvement with both the British SOE and Canaris’s German military resistance to Hitler-and his approval of plots to assassinate Hitler-has, I must admit, gone a long way toward rehabilitating Pius XII in my historical estimation, Astrid. I LOVE the “Spies and Ties” series, and particularly appreciate your presentation style. I do hope that in future TimeGhost will pair you up with Timothy Peach again: he is a charming and charismatic presenter as well, and I enjoyed seeing the two of you work together.
Please more of these stories, and certainly these amazing hosts! Timothy did well, cutting his teeth on a rather difficult episode, and Astrid - both brilliantly encouraging and coaxing, but also not losing her indelible shine and stunning shine, keeping the episode on time, theme, and in high spirited fashion, keeping the overall theme of intrigue and suspense. Timothy’s fresh air and yet polished tone, a charmingly (cunning) combination that entertains and educates in fantastic fashion, that is cinematic and totally immersive. Brilliantly well done! Here’s to much more, soon, and as always, splendidly well done!
A great wrap to a fantastic series. Thank you, Timothy! Such a pleasure to have you along for the ride. Thank you, Astrid, lovely and informative as ever!

Astrid and Timothy. I loved your interactions. They were surely one of the highlights in this video. Great job. Had no idea about these plots. But now I do. Thanks a bunch.
Its a very simplified version of the Vatican's policies and John Cornwell's book "Hitler's Pope" did not help either. I hated that book so much as it interprets every move (and move not taken) as something being sympathetic to the Hitler regime never pointing out how the Vatican and the Party had never trusted each other after the violations made against the Concordat.

When Timothy corrected Astrid with regard to his name, she should've put her arm around his shoulder and said, "Timmy, my boy, you should really think about updating your image."
Well i was astounded to see that Hitler thought The Pope more enemy than friend... Great series!.... But that leaves me with the question : how where the Germans able to create all these ratlines through the Vatican, which they used to escape when the war ended???.... Till now I thought Vatican was a close friend, but it seems that was not the case.... Then how the hell????? Maybe a fifth episode would shed some light!!!
The church being made of many individuals could have some opposed to Nazi Germany and those sympathetic to the Nazi's. Some Catholics acted morally and others did not.
St Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish Priest & St Benedicta of the Cross / Edith Stein, a Jewish nun were both killed in Auschwitz concentration camp. St Kolbe died for the Jews [being a Priest was the only reason he did not received harsh punishment-as most Germans themselves were baptized Christians who later engaged heavily in paganism]. Unfortunately, there were already divisions regarding the Jews since the First Crusade, but none came officially from the Pope but rather individuals / groups within the Church. One example is the excommunication of the Crusaders of the fourth Crusade, but never the first or second as they relatively carried out the orders from the Pope & hierarchy of the Church better than the latter. In short we will "always" have Nazi sympathizers among us from all four corners of the earth for various reasons; from the "great replacement" conspiracy theory to "evil occupiers that need to be eliminated from the face of the earth" by their opponents. I recommend "the Jewish Catholic" RUclips Channel & "Salvation is From the Jews" blog to anyone interested in learning about the Jewish-Catholic relation.
To the Vatican, Nazism was misguided and excessive, but not innately evil. There were good parts and bad parts to Hitler's regime in the eyes of the Church and the ratlines were an attempt to retain the good parts.
The German Catholic Church had been opposed to the Nazis before they even get to seize power. The clergy had been known to deny communion to people who were confirmed Nazi party members and Hitler did try to step up Bismark's Kulturkampf to try and get the Church as far from politics as possible. Hitler cant seize power without appeasing a little bit to the Catholics tho so thats why he did not oppose the Concordat.
@@mosesracal6758 Yes, and lest we forget about this: Wilhelm Hosenfeld, 1895-1952, was born in a village near Fulda in Hessen, Germany in 1895. He grew up in a conservative CATHOLIC and German patriotic family and served as a soldier in World War I. After the war, he became a teacher, married, and had five children. Hosenfeld joined the Nayzi party in 1935. He served as an officer in the Wehrmacht stationed in Warsaw from July 1940 until the end of the war. Although Hosenfeld supported the Nazi party in its beginnings, after he read “Mein Kampf” and saw the deadly consequences of the Nazis’ rise to power he grew disillusioned with the regime and kept journals detailing the abuse of Jews and others. In his writings, Hosenfeld expressed his mounting disgust with the regimes’ oppression of Poles, the persecution of Polish clergy, the abuse of Jews, and, with the initiation of the “Final Solution”, his horror at the extermination of the Jewish people. In January 1945, Hosenfeld was taken prisoner by the Soviets and sentenced to 25 years in prison in 1950 on charges that he interrogated prisoners during the Warsaw Uprising and sent them to detention. The Soviets ignored his statements that he had helped Jews and Poles and was only responsible for the sports school and training of German soldiers. Warm and Szpilman both petitioned the Soviets for Hosenfeld’s release. The Soviets refused to consider the petitions, believing that Hosenfeld had been involved in war crimes. In 1952, Hosenfeld died after a series of strokes in a Soviet prison. Hosenfeld was honored by Yad Vashem with the "Righteous Among the Nations" distinction on November 25, 2008. Taken from the Jewish Virtual Library, Wikipedia, Jerusalem Post etc. As a Catholic myself i pray for his Sainthood.
