    For those who are curious, Helmuth James von Moltke was the grandnephew of Helmuth von Moltke the Younger, The Chief of the German General Staff during the opening months of WWI.
    He was also the great-grandnephew of Helmuth von Moltke the Elder, the Chief of Staff for the Prussian Army during the 2nd Schleswig War (1864), the Austro-Prussian War (1866), and the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71).

    Unfair! You can't just leave us hanging like that. ;-) Thank you for this series. As a retired history instructor, I know how hard it is to get balanced information on role of the Pope in Big Mistake Two. As a Catholic, I have a built-in bias, but I never expected him to be that directly involved. I knew about the actions of Catholic individuals (many became saints) and organizations but I always assumed the Pope was merely turning a blind eye and not actively involved.

      Pope did not do enough.
      He could have done so much more but he didn't.
      If Putin would do anything to current Pope, Pope Francis, how would around 1 billion Catholics that is now in the world, react to that ?
      He was a coward and being as such caused untold sufferings to people.

    • @old-moose
      @old-moose 2 года назад +5

      @@ari1234a It is easy to judge historic figures. It is more difficult to understand them. Compared to our (Canada's) WW2 prime minister, the Pope comes off very well. (Short of Hitler and his crew, almost anyone looks better than Mr. King.) Our PM actively tried to prevent Jewish immigration into Canada during and after the war. Considering the large number of Jews be hidden in and moved through Catholic services in Rome and Italy, The Pope had to know about it. (My blind eye comment.)
      In the mean time, as I always taught my students, I'm more worried about what I'm doing now that the future will judge as stupid or out right immoral.

      ? KGB/UB-Polish Branch,"Urzad BEzpieczenstwa", sent through Jesuits (sic!) in Poland, Mr.Turowski to Rome, to enter the novitiate and become a Jesuit (to be a spy as a chaplain on NATO there). In 1980 he got a mysterious directive (from Poland) to warn the Vatican that its security is v.questionable; he did it and of course, immediately the question aroused who is he (Mr.Turowski); no one before him suggested such a warning! JPII directly asked him@he mysteriously answered, I "serve the homeland".He was immediately transferred to..Paris and as a womanizer started dating the daughter of a policeman. French Counter-Intelligence checked him finally but he also "smelled" his mission was uncovered and he simply...escaped to Poland (to his UB superiors and Communist Party, later -the ambassador in Moscow).
      Ps. His 1980 warning seemed to prove that Polish Intelligence discovered the plot of KGB to assassinate the Pope and simple contra Moscov headquarters decided to warn the Pope- how can one explain this Turowski's warning to the Vatican? It fits other data: Bulgarian escaped to France and revealed the plot by Bulgarian (with Ali Agca) and France warned the Vatican but they did not believe it seriously at that time until the...day of the assassination on May 13, 1981. (all in Turowski's Memorias, by GAzeta Wyborcza; and C.Sterling, The Time of Assassins, 1983); later revealed: Vatican Radio in Polish run by Jesuits who were ..Secret Service informants (TW-Tajny Wspolpracownik)like Fr. Koprowski, also the Superior of Jesuits Eastern Europe province and plenty others. Vatican "CounterIntelligence" chief,Fr.Graham SI had ab.100 boxes of files on spies in the Vatican but JPIi forbade to disclose it. I "smelled" something v strange listening to Vatican Radio "teachings" during Marshall Law in 1982 and later-It was revealed later after 1989 why.

      The Church reflects society's politics. There were Catholic resisters to Nazism, and there were Catholic supporters. While the institution of the church opposed Nazism, that didn't stop Nazi sympathetic Catholics from helping Nazis escape Europe at the end of the war.

      "the institution of the church opposed Nazism"
      This is simply not true. The story is just too muddy to make such a statement. Stay tuned for more detail.

    Sounds exactly confusing as someone trying to make up their resistance work after the war. A bunch of people talking to each other trying to convince each other to do something, but nobody does anything.

      I think any one of us would find organizing such resistance a challenge in a continent where civilization had been systematically demolished for more than a decade.
