  • Today we talk about the history of Egypt's domestically manufactured AKM. This rifle has gone by several names over the years, including MISR, ARM, or just 'Maadi.'
    Here we talk about how Soviet-Russia established Factory #54 outside of Cairo, get into why Anwar Sadat broke tighs with the Comblock, and end with Egypt's decision to ally itself with America and the West.
    Then we discuss the various semi-auto Maadis that have been imported into the USA; such as those from Steyr, Intrac, PARS, and Century Arms International. Names for these civilian versions include: ARM, RML, RPM, MISR, MISR10, MISR-SA, and the dreaded MISR90.
    Featured in this video is my own Intrac ARM rifle, with original Egyptian paratrooper side folding wire stock. Also my Russian AKM, assembled by Legion-USA from a 1973 Izhevsk parts kit (sorry for the mis-speak in the video), on a Childers receiver.

    I happened to have came across a 1974 date full auto Egyptian AKMS and the finish show the age but was in a very good conditions internally and in perfect working order just to mintion that at least till mid 70 We did not had the side folders

    One reason the Steyr imports are so expensive was their use in Red Dawn and the lower import numbers. I personally have a MISR S/A, I absolutely love it. I bought it from the original purchaser. I definitely will be getting a PARS or Intrac in the future.

    The wooden furniture, although completely aesthetic, is very pretty, especially the coloration of the upper hand guard and how it harmonizes with the lower hand guard. What treatments and storage conditions do you use on all of your wooden furniture to keep them all so pristine? Thanks for another very informative video Misha.

    Egypt now built another firearm factory and it will produce another rifle. I think it will be CZ-807 as the company mentioned tgat Egypt needs 450K to replace Maadi. They ordered some CZ to test in the ongoing operations in Sinai against ISIS. The rifle is now used by the Egyptian paratroopers. The Maadi factory will still working as the police still uses the AKM but they started to replace it by AK-103 for the SWAT team.

    Very interesting video. I own an Egyptian MISR S/A but I don't know much about it (I'm 45 and shot guns my entire life and know how to properly use firearms safely, but I'm far from an expert on the field) and have always wanted to learn more. Mine is very similar to yours, but mine still has the wooden stock with the thumb hole on it. I still have to say I have mixed feelings about the stock. I've had it for several years but I'm still honestly not sure if I like it or not. Lol Anyway, from what I was able to find out, the Egyptian AKs were made using Russian parts like you said. And if I recall, the Egyptian make AKs were second only to the actual authentic Russian AKs. Also if I remember correctly, it was not only due to the Russian made parts used to manufacture them on the Egyptian factories, but the Russians built the factory themselves and very closely monitored the entire process more than other manufacturers. Basically, if I am remembering correctly, the Russians really took a special interest (much more than any other manufacturers aside from Russia, of course) in the entire operation, including oversight, production, quality control, etc. etc. etc. I read pretty much everything you mentioned in the video, including how they had to make a few modifications (like shaving the bayonet lug and replacing the stock to a thumbhole one, as I mentioned mine had earlier, in order to sell them in the US market. However, there are a few words stamped/engraved on the metal that I was unable to find out the meaning to. Directly under the left side of the adjustable sights, it has "MISR S/A" (I'm guessing the S/A must mean semi automatic) and right below that it has "Cal 7.62x39mm", which is self explanatory. However, on the opposite side of the gun under the right side of the sights is what I can't find any info on. It has "MADE BY MAADI CO IN EGYPT" stamped/engraved on it and below that it has "IMPORTER C A I At Alb VT". At least I'm pretty sure that's what it says. Some of the letters are small and hard to make out. But I'm hoping you (or someone else who may read this comment) might have some insight or be able to tell me or find out what it means. From what I read, it's supposedly a high quality rifle but I really don't know so Any info on the value would be appreciated also, but any feedback at all would be appreciated. Also, if you would like to see any pictures or have any questions, please feel free to ask. I can e-mail you any pics if you like. I know the video has been up for some time so if you don't respond, I'll understand. There is a good chance you may not even be aware of this comment/question. Thank you for your time. -Rick

    Best Maadi info I've come across, After I picked up a Maadi RPM in a multi gun trade, I knew very little about this Gem. At first sight I thought the finish had been Rattle canned by some Billy Bob Bubba Boy down the line, the Egyptian stamps looked more like heavy scratches than stamps. After doing a little research I found that the paint job is original, and the markings were not gouged in scratches. Also learned very quick that I now owned a very well made sought after AKM!
    My Maadi has the threaded barrel with the Black/Blue grip, also has the wood butstock with kinda matching upper/lower handguards. Out of all of my AK's the Maadi looks like the ugly duckling out of the bunch, out on the range, she drives like a vintage Ferrari! There is nothing I can add to my Maadi to make it run any better than it already does!
    And thanks for a very informative video!

    Great information in this vid. Any idea how Croatia ended up with a bunch of the Maadi rifles. I had a kit built from one and it came with a Croatian police force tag on it. Great rifle with all sandscript markings.

    • @AKAngelKingAK
      @AKAngelKingAK 5 лет назад +1

      The Croats intercepted and captured a large shipment of maadi rifles that were suppose to go to Bosnia.... many of the egyptian kits that imported here at one time were from Croatia and from that intercepted batch of rifes intended for Bosnia. I have one as well but not lucky enough to have a sticker like yours, many were in great shape like mine is because they were not used much if at all..
      Egypt was supplying parts of that conflict and were having trouble getting them in the hands of some. Plus trying to avoid the whole issue of not falling into war crimes which most of that conflict fell under afterwards..... they even made a very rare discreet export version specifically for the balkans that came with no arsenal markings to show the manufacture and its country of origin on the trunnion, with SAR selector markings, and a dong grip exactly like the Romanians had just to give the impression that they were in fact Romanian AK variants instead of Egyptian which would have arrosed many questions to some at the time...

      AK47(AngelKing)AK74 I just purchased a rifle presented as a Balkan war kit, all matching serial numbers but no Arabic markings. It has caliber marking on the left side of rear sight post. The furniture looks Egyptian with East German crutch folder but I’m not confident I have an Egyptian Maadi? The kit was sent to and built by In Range and is a cool rifle at a decent price $750 . I wish I knew for certain it was a Maadi.

    Most of the videos on the AK47 are fairly old. You seem to have an ongoing attachment to yours, which is great. You seem to be very knowledgeable on them so I thought I would run a few questions in regards to mine. I noticed on one of the videos, one fella was panning a closeup of his and you could see the serial number. His started with "ES" mine begins with, "AC". I was curious if this meant anything such as it does in the VIN to a vehicle. Also another gentleman was showing how authentic his was because it had the Egyptian numerals on the site bar. Mine has our numbers. I bought mine about 20 years ago at a gun show for 900.00. The but of mine has the pistol grip as a rather large oval type hole where my thumb goes thru and I can rest the butt on my shoulder. Seems like all of the others I see on the videos show a separate pistol grip from the butt. Mine has all of the MAADI stamps on the left side rear, as do the others I have seen, but mine has a stamp on the right side, just forward of the clip that has stamped, "A.C.C. INT/INTRAC"
    "KNOX. TN."
    "EGYPT"
    Just curious if you knew the purpose of that? I don't know of another rifle that feels like you could drop it in the bayou and pull it out of the mud a year later and just start ripping with it! The cleaning kit in the butt and the ability to break the gun down is unlike any other rifle I have put my hands on. If there are others built like that, what are they, in your opinion? I have a couple of AR15's and if I dropped them on the concrete, it's a 90-10 chance that I just broke something!!! Anyway, I was just curious if you could maybe shed a little light on mine for me. Thanks.

    Okay I have to say one thing, I own a Misr90 yeah I realize it's the dumpster fire of the AK world. Yes it does have a slightly canted front sight and yes the slanted receiver totally sucks. But with that being said foam hole stock is gone and I have modified with the appropriate parts, I have put more than 1500 rounds or possibly close to 2000 rounds with zero malfunctions. So in my opinion it's not quite the dumpster fire that everybody thinks they are. I purchased this weapon in the early 2000s not knowing any better, but as far as my opinion goes it's done a fairly decent job. I think it stands right up there with the type 56 mak-90.

    I have a MISR10 that has had the mag well opened, so far it runs fine. I've compared its front trunnion to the one in my Intrac ARM, my feg sa85m and a few more of my akm pattern rifles and can see no difference. They look identical and there is what appears to be factory finish on the misr trunnion still. It does have a single stack bolt, but very little has been taken off of the sides and none off of the bottom. So far through several different mag types it feeds fine.

    So the Maadi has become one of my favorite AKM pattern rifles. The small idiosyncrasies are what give it so much character. Black, blue, brown grips and bayonets, Mismatched shades of upper and lower hand guards, Arabic or western markings or even both on the same number matching rifle! I have a full Arabic marked 1988 parts kit and a half western, half Arabic 1987. The strange thing is that my 1987 has an Arabic marked rear sight block serialized with a matching western marked sightleaf. I can not find any info on why some had one, or the other, in markings, wood, or colored grips. Even the imported rifles that had the pharaohs crown had some with western number 54 and some with the Arabic 54. There seems to be no rhyme or reason. The Maadi is like a box of chocolates because you never know what you are going to get! Also the icing on the cake for me is the green sling that makes the rifle stand out. All of these strange things make it much more appealing to me than some of the others where you know they will all be identical. My .02 on the Maadi. Thanks for the video!

      I know this comment is old but Egypt stopped using Arabic numerals at some point they discovered that the origin was Indian so they just use western numerals after that.

    My dad gave me a Maddi, the lower was produced by a shop called Norris Armory from Woodland California anyone know anything about "Norris" the letter and number stamping were done one letter at a time and they look like they are on the ocean on a ruff day. They go up and down not a straight line at all. I probably shouldn't judge the gun by the letter stamps. The rivets look decent. The coating on the lower is a much lighter gray-green than the rest of the gun maybe I get the gun Parkerized.

    What is the purpose of an export designation? What changes?

    • @AKAngelKingAK
      @AKAngelKingAK 5 лет назад +1

      To determine ones used demostically and ones built for export to other nations for military use....
      In most cases, there is no difference functionally or even in appearnce. But the difference is in the markings. Egypt uses Arabic numberals on the sight leaf and the rear sight block showing its intended caliber aswell as Arabic selector markings for the modes of fire. While export models have SAR for selector markings just as the Romanians did and regular numbers on both rsb and sight leaf. Egypt did also make a rare export version known as the discreet export that was purposily built for use in the Balkan wars that had a forward grip same as the romanians commonly called the dong grip.... it was intended to cover up any thoughts that egypt was arming cetain parts of the conflict by giving the impression that they were instead the Romanian variant.

    Correction Egypt lost 1 war with Israel, under President Abdel Nassers rule who was very close to the Russians. In the 2nd war President Sadat with very little real support from neighboroughing nations was able to attack Isreal and recover much of the previous lost Sinai land. This was no lose, militarily it was successful.

    Even might have gone for nuclear because the zionists didn’t uphold to the ceasefire
