I've seen AK tests where the AK fires one round and seizes, and I've seen AR tests where they just keep running even after being dumped in mud. The AR will keep running, but so will the AK. Its down to personal preference. I switch my preference about three times a day.

    "Prom queen vs biker bitch" is probably the best analogy I've ever heard for the argument. Just ask yourself what you're buying the weapon for. If you're looking to reliably drop something relatively close in adverse environments, the AK 47 is your gun. If your looking for long range accuracy in an environment that permits consistent maintenance, the AR 15 is for you.

However, when they are tested on equal footing the conventional beliefs of reliability are reversed.

    A tip for quicker mag changes with the AK: use a tracer round for the 2nd to last round in each mag. Change the mag after shooting the tracer when there is one round in the chamber. You won't have to charge the rifle and you'll cut your time in half.

    I remember in some countries, they would take a rope soaked in kerosene, and run it down the barrel of an AK47... took not even 5 minutes to take the bolt apart, then drop that in the kerosene, then rub it with motor oil to get it cleaned... took about 10 minutes tops... these rifles were rusty, dirty, looked like they were used to dig holes, those rifles NEVER misfired or malfunctioned.. The round is another reason why you go with an AK... But, the key words here are, if the AR is KEPT CLEAN it will function well.. if not, then ... a few days, or weeks, or months, in the SH*T, I can tell you which rifle you wish you had.

    • @poppabear9279
      @poppabear9279 9 лет назад +15

      you will see, time and time again from youtube channels, that they served time in the USMC, or other military services, then return back here and the AK / AKM is their primary rifle now. The M16, or M4 rilfes are still not 100%. They are a damn fine rifle and I own a couple that have been fairly reliable. There's a reason why someone would make the AK their primary rifle however.. and it's because the AR fails, the small 55 to 62 grain bullet loses steam after 200-250 yards and the ability for the bullet to perform it's intended job is highly diminished.
      On the other hand, the 7.62 x 39 ballistic testing and wound cavity is not as dramatic as the AR. under 300 yards. That little tiny bullet is devastating. But, the AK will bust down bricks and does good at going through minor barricades.
      My magic bullet is the 5.45 x 39 in an AK-74. I'm fairly new to shooting this round, but in the last year, found this to be very good accuracy, very hard hitting, extremely reliable, able to penetrate steel core RC engines we've been shooting up, able to penetrate hardened steel plate and just one badass, well thought out round and rifle. My AK-74s are as accurate as my Adams arms piston AR, yet as reliable as my AK47.. perfect combo!

    • @JoeyP322
      @JoeyP322 9 лет назад

      You're 100% right... I think a couple AK47s (MAK90 or Polytech) and a couple AK74's and you're good to go.... Not sure if Obama had bad intel on the 'steel core' Soviet surplus 5.45x39, or he just doesn't want his conservative libertarian enemies to have it. Either case I have to start a new 'collection' - any idea who makes the best AK74s?

    • @poppabear9279
      @poppabear9279 9 лет назад +5

      Joey P Just made 3x Bulgarian from brand spankin new AK-74 parts kits.
      The guns didn't even have scratches from the bolt carrier being fitted inside of the steel receiver rails. Fabulous!
      The AK-74s were solid, the trunions showed no signs of even being fitted to a rifle, and even the bolt itself showed no wear or marring from sliding inside the sheet metal rail on the receiver.
      These Bulgarian 74s are better quality than any of the Izhmash AKs built by Arsenal.
      The receivers used were chromoly, hardened in a kiln to 1525 deg F, then oil bathed in a homemade forming tool to keep the receiver straight. The final assembly, everything was trimmed on my CNC, and applied Tarjac green and black Cerakote. The make, feel and everything about the rifles leaves my friends drooling and wanting them.
      So, Bulgarian brand new matching #s parts kit is the answer. Cheers and have a wonderful 2015!

    • @Illestrapper
      @Illestrapper 4 года назад +5

      @@Humberto4790 they did the same test with the dust cover opened and the gun still fired. The reason was the ARs tighter fittings even with the dust cover open still made it harder for gunk to get in and stay in. They mentioned the negative about the gas impingement system - putting gas into the bolt carrier which adds heat a fouling and affects reliability. But they didn't mention the negatives about the piston system on the AK.
    On an AR the only thing that moves is the bolt carrier which is inline with the bore and the shooter's shoulder so the recoil of the rifle is straight back allowing the shooter to stay on target.
    On the AK the piston is ABOVE the center of the bore so as it comes back it pulls the barrel of the gun upward as well thereby pulling it off target. Worse yet, the piston is actually attached to the bolt carrier and this acts as a lever which magnifies the problem of muzzle rise. Shooters say that the AK isn't accurate. They are talking about follow up shots because the rifle pulls the shooter off target with every pull of the trigger.
    I like the piston-drive AR. The piston is super light and not attached to the bolt carrier. This decreases muzzle rise and increases reliability.
    I have an Arsenal Arsenal SLR-107 and a custom piston-driven AR. I would grab whichever one I had the most ammo at the time.

      You forgot to mention the horrid open sight system present on each AK. Those aperture sights *really* make the target pop out. It's almost silly that people bother placing optics an ARs at all. I have a Mauser 98 that has those same Eastern European sight acquisitions. Aiming is god awful! I can bullseye with it, but it takes almost twice as long to get it lined up.

The price was right, and as it was in my hand I felt as though I were 9 years old again when holding it, charging it and aiming it. I decided to buy the AK, and so so happy I did. The shooting pleasure I get out of it is just awesome. I love the simplicity on it, it has about 4 moving parts on it, and its just awesome. Also the FN 49 used a short stroke piston, not direct gas impingment. and piston ARs aren't use a short stoke piston, whereas AKs use a long stroke, quite a big difference.

      @shananagans5 8 лет назад +10

      +Atilla The Fun No doubt. Just a few spare parts will keep an AR running optimally for the life of the barrel. If you ask me, that little extra maintenance every 4,000-5,000 rounds is more than worth the benefits the AR offers. People act like spare parts will be impossible to find if something happens.
      Personally, when I build a new rifle I just buy a spare bolt, 3 sets of gas rings, 3 extractor & ejector springs, a hammer spring, a couple of buffer springs & a spare gas tube. That has me set as far as maintenance for the life of the gun & all that can fit in a sock stuffed in with a box of ammo. Not to mention, you can carry a spare bolt in the grip. In the rare event something actually breaks, a spare bolt can be slapped in very quickly, under a min, & covers a large % of problems that could disable the gun.
      Every 4,000 to 5,000 rounds I replace the springs in the bolt, the gas rings, and the buffer spring. At 10,000 I replace the bolt, gas tube, hammer spring & buffer spring. (the newer chrome silicon buffer springs may last the life of the gun)
      It sounds like lots just listing it here but that's over the life of the gun. That results in replacing things before they break & it's only about $100 in parts to keep it running like new for 20,000 + rounds.
      Some say the AR requires excessive maintenance but I wouldn't consider taking 20 mins or so & swapping out a few parts three times over the life of the gun excessive.

      J Carlos Rosiles Realistically they are both great guns. You won't flat out go wrong with either but, depending on what you want to do with it you may very much prefer one over the other. If you like to go shooting & just blast off a bunch of rounds & blow up water bottles at relatively close ranges the AK is for you.
      The AK is more accurate than many give it credit for but they are much harder to get that accuracy out of them. They aren't fun to sit down & target shoot with. Well, they are but not like the AR.
      If doing precision target shooting is important to you, the AR is better. The AR will also do an impressive job blowing up water bottles but the AR just doesn't have the same feel & attitude of an AK.
      The attributes of both that people argue about are drastically exaggerated. Yes, the AK will run dirtier & is more reliable if you don't maintain it well but they still jam. They still need maintenance. They aren't this mechanical device that will continue to work no matter what.
      Yes, the AR needs more maintenance but no, it doesn't have to be spotless. With normal maintenance you would give any gun & the AR will never give you a spot of trouble. We aren't in a war zone, we don't throw our guns in a river or a sand bank. Is the ability to withstand that really something you need in a gun?
      What I am getting at is don't rule out the AR because you hear they need to be spotless or they jam easy. They don't. Reliability isn't an issue unless you really neglect/abuse it. Don't rule out the AK because you hear they are not accurate. No they aren't as accurate as the AR but, if you take your time, they can do a 5" group at 200 yards.
      When I was younger I liked to go out & just blast away at water bottles or old cinder blocks. I didn't particularly like cleaning. I wanted to clean it quick & be done with it. I liked the AK back then
      Now that I am older, I like to take my time & shoot the water bottle out at 200 yards. I don't mind cleaning & I like to tinker. Now, I like the AR better.
      Just some things to consider. By the way. you will end up with both eventually. You should say you are trying to decide which to get first. :) lol Good Day !!

    The video repeatedly refers to an M885 and an SS109 round. I found that very confusing. IIRC, M855, not M885, was the standard 62gr, "green tip", 5.56mm ammunition, we were issued for the GWOT and I believe SS109 was the either the NATO or possibly the Fabrique Nationale nomenclature for the round. M193 was the lighter stuff issue to the guys since Nam. I've heard from friends that are still active, that DoD decided to pick up a new environmentally friendly M855A1. It replaces the lead, in the back of the jacket, with a bismuth alloy, without changing the steel penetrator in the nose. However, I don't recall ever using an M885 round.

      The M855 is the SS109 with a 61 grain bullet. it replaced the old M193 55 grain. The newest is the "green" M855A1 where the lead is replaced with a copper core.

My previous comment was meant primarily to question the ''M885", that's mentioned in the video. Again probably a simply typo on IV8888's part rather than a lack of knowledge, but it could be annotated in the popups, without re-filming the video and losing the old footage of Barry.

While I still think that we have a problem with with gun violence and that we should look into gun control, I am now a perspective gun buyer. I am a freshmen in college, and I do not have a place to keep a weapon, but I am saving for a Mosin Nagant, 10/22, and a mid-sized glock in 9mm or .45. I have fired shotguns, handguns as powerful as a .454 casaull, and rifles from .22 up to a 300 winchester magnum. While I like the .454 and the 300 winmag, the guns and ammo cost a bit too much for a starving college student. I love the Mosin for its history and the way it shoots. Hands down, it is my favorite rifle. You guys actually sold me on the 10/22 and the glock. Before I had been looking into a 1911 or a .45 revolver, but I like the economy of a glock and the 9mm, but I like the way the .45 shoots. Any advice on which caliber to choose? Accuracy, economy, and self defense capabilities are all factors for me.

    For the average consumer living in the US, the AR15 is unquestionably the better gun, as cleaning materials and .223 rounds are much more abundant in a SHTF scenario.

    The Finish AK is called RK 62 or 95 depending on the model. Easiest way to diffrentiate them is to check the stock. 62 has a tube stock and the 95 has skeletal folding stock. There basically AK:s with diopter sights with a bit less slack between parts.

    I never understood the argument that AK's should be reserved for less than well off people or military's. Doesn't it make sense that you would probably have to train your troops less on maintaining the rifle and use the saved time to teach them to shoot it instead or other important things? Wouldn't it would be a huge morale booster for the troops since they know that their weapon will go bang and kill something even if supply lines get cut off or there is insufficient time to really do weapons maintenance?Also, wouldn't it ease the supply lines a bit with less material needed for maintenance? Even if your military can afford a high maintenance weapon, why should it unless there's a huge bump in performance?

    The M16's reputation is Vietnam was also due to a cheaper and readier acquired ball powder procured used by the Army which left more residue than the log powder Colt's "self-cleaning" rifle was supposed to handle, and matching cleaning kits weren't distributed until 1967. The infamous reports of soldiers and marines dead with disassembled rifles in their laps stained the reputation long after the issues had been resolved.
