Seems like a bad move to call at least a portion of your viewers assholes or assuming everyone who has an issue is an asshole. Sure some customers are too picky about things like slight color differences but based on what I’ve seen, many complaints are about structural issues. Is a customer concerned about water intrusion from poor welt stitching an asshole? You like Grant Stone. Stone doesn’t send out many boots with defects. Why the difference? Why aren’t the owners of Nicks or White’s bitching about how stupid and useless American workers are? I have two pairs of Truman and was already done with them but this just seals it.

While I'm all for not taking yourself too seriously all the time, I think saying "Integrity doesn't pay the bill" is a bit concerning for a boot brand that is supposed to be built on that principle. There are times to joke and times to be serious or you can really hurt your brand. That comment makes it seem like he's going to sell out or do a lot of cost-cutting.

@@filthyvibes4768 you keep moving the goalpost. First it was just him being honest, now it's let the boots speak for themselves. Things don't operate in a vacuum like that. Whether you think it's right or not, people react when a boot maker says they are "done making boots" and "integrity doesn't pay the bills" (I'm paraphrasing, I don't know the exact quotes off the top of my head). It destroys the brand, something that Vince has spent some time trying to build. OP was just trying to say that, and you jumped in to defend Vince. This isn't about him, per se, but since Vince is the brand it hurts the business when he says crazy things. And FWIW, I did try one pair Truman's and they were the least comfortable pair of heritage boots I have tried to date, so they did speak for themselves to me. It was mostly the last shape though, and they obviously fit some people well, so I have no issue with them succeeding as a company. I just happen to disagree with the direction Vince has taken his company announcements lately and I think they are bad business decisions.

so, instead of throwing a baby fit, maybe the owner should put a NO RETURNS policy on his specialty leathers. i personally enjoy the odd differences in my boots. it makes them unique and special and personal and mine like no one else has. but i can see if someone saves up $500 for ONE pair of leather boots and they are not what they had imagined then it would be devastating. that's the problem with purchasing site unseen over the internet on a product that is hand made in small batches. if you can only afford one painting you wouldn't mail an artist the money and just hope he paints what you want him to paint. but if you have a LOT of paintings then one more that is unique would be worth the money. so Truman is more of a collectors brand than a brand for someone that wants ONE pair of boots that look like the picture.

The owner seems like a complete tool tbh. "Left or right, anyone would want to stab me in the face over dinner" like mate that's not impressive or badass, you just sound like a wanker. Being abrasive is no substitute for a personality, and all being unkind to others does is make the world a less pleasant place to inhabit. This guy takes explicit joy in identifying as a git -- everyone can be a wanker sometimes, but taking pride in it marks you out as an odious person in my book.
And then you have the smack-talking his own employees. Like, I get it. Good help is hard to find. People are dumb. But as the owner the buck stops with you -- I mean, you're hiring these people for crying out loud. And if you've gone through twenty people and incorrect shipments keep happening then maybe, just maybe, your institutional system is flawed. Perhaps you should organise your workshop floor to be more resilient to human error. Why can one individual's mistake result in the problem occurring? Competent managers are familiar with systems approaches and implement them. And above all else, you shouldn't be publicly denigrating your staff. Great way to damage morale -- given we know he takes pride in being a prick, I'm sure he's a really great boss to work for. Lord help you if you make an honest error.
And then the customer service complaints, like yours. The owner is clearly pretty bloody emotionally sensitive if getting negative feedback drives him to publicly shame his customers. Like, dude, if you're so thin skinned you can't bear to see someone (even wrongfully) criticise your product without throwing a tantrum -- you should hire someone to deal with your CS for you, because you're obviously too much of a crybaby to deal with it yourself. Overall the guy just strikes me as a classic macho faux-tough guy who couldn't survive ten minutes working anywhere he isn't the big boss and gets the final say on everything. Throw in the "doesn't let his daughters eat meat in restaurants" thing and it's like, ya you've got some control issues dontcha bud. Emotionally fragile sorta deal.
      Makes good boots though.

Appreciate your take Dale. Your vids are great and I personally like the extra steps you take with the editing. But I'll be watching regardless of the format you use going forward.
2 things I'd say regarding this topic. Although I agree that customers should not be so picky about minor inperfections and blemishes, I think referring to customers that might have legitimate gripes about "substantive" QC issues as ass holes is not completely fair. By putting a picture of a particular boot up on a website, a merchant is in a sense warranting that the boot will be a particular way (UCC). Even if there's a disclaimer that says the boot might be slightly different than what is pictured, the customer will expect their product to be materially close to what is pictured. There's a way to avoid the issue imo... In the case of the rambler leather, for example, rather than putting up the perfect rendition of the boot, the merchant (e.g., Truman) could put up an example boot that is more representative of what a customer might actually get. That way customers know what to expect.
Second, Truman at the end of the day is a merchant. A fundamental business anecdote is that the customer is always right, even if they aren't. Of course, there are limits to that. That said, merchants sorta open themselves up to criticism and pain in the butt customers. That's just what it is, but you still try to satisfy them, because at the end of the day, the customers are one of the key reasons the business survives, or doesn't. If one can't handle that reality (and I'm not saying that's Vince), I can see why they might get out of a business.
I have a lot of boots, including many Truman. I'm fortunate to have always received good enough pairs that I didn't have to return or exchange from Truman, bur I've certainly had to exchange or return for some other brands like Red Wing, Wolverine, and Allen Edmonds. I had legitimate reasons for doing so and others will too. Love what Vince does and hope that Truman has a long future ahead of them.

There's a fine line between imperfect and unacceptable, and in my experience (2 for 2), Truman rides that line heavily. I had ordered a pair of rough out boots from them and one had a suede texture while its mate looks like an overgrown vacant lot. I was told they would look the same after a while and I wish I had shipped them back, because a year later that is not the case.. Before those, I did ship back a pair of JWF because one had a gash in the leather that was shoddily repaired and very noticeable. The next pair were perfect, but why put the customer through that? I saw my returned boots on the Seconds page for a discount, but they were happy to send them to me initially for full price.

IMHO, one of the greatest values of your channel is getting an alternate view of the boots from what I can see on a brand's website or social media. Also, I agree it makes no sense for people to lose their minds over talk about no more Truman. Number one, so what, nothing in my life depends on whether the brand continues. Number two, Vince built the brand over ten years and has been reinvesting in it, so whatever he said is obviously just off the cuff because as a business person, it makes no sense to dump an established brand name: look at the dumpster fire that is X. :D

Dear Dale, thanks a lot for sharing your ideas and reflections about Truman boots. I acknowledge your committment for a good friend. But nonetheless, from my point of view, it is quite obvious that Truman boots has tuned in on a next transformation. It seems to me that they use Black Friday 2024 as sort of a disuised final sale. It reminds me the closing down of warehouses in former times: it began with lots of products behind the window at low prices and some weeks later I could watch the last dozen of lost things before the business was closed. Wether Truman will be closing down or switch to a different business model, remains open (I hope the latter will become true). For the time being there are quite some signs for change: There is no longer a MTO section, for many sizes there is no pair left, second samples are down to 1 pair etc. etc. I agree with you (and the CEO of Truman) that "our" market of aficionados of boots like the Trumans is limited (not only with regard to the number of people interested in these boots, but also with regard to how often you will buy a pair of Trumans during your life) and that this is in contrast to economic perspectives and interests of a company. But for Truman aficionados the loss of boots like the Trumans is a tragedy. (it will be interesting to observe how the second hand market on ebay etc. will develop). - Thanks a lot for your contributions on boots and leather. I very much appreciate your style and your generous attitude when presenting boots. Al

I love this off the cuff talking conversational video because I’m not watching the video most of the time. I’m just listening. So my favorite ones are those where I don’t have to see the screen. Of course if it’s a review of a specific boot that’s a different thing, because I would like to see it. But I still prefer the stream of consciousness like I’m just hanging out with you and you’re telling me what you think.

I have bought around 20 pairs of Truman or possibly more. First couple pairs were the stitch down ones. Only one pair had a defect, and Truman offered an exchange or refund. It was a moc toe that had one boot stitched off center on the moc. Ended up giving them to a friend. Have also given a few other pairs to friends who could not afford good boots. As far as the channel, I like more just the desktop reviews and discussions. Some of the intro parts can be tedious.

@williamswiger7547 I respect a person with a generous heart. Anyone that collects multiple pairs of boots and talk about selling rather than passing on their good fortune by donating a pair really gives me pause. I like JG philosophy and have been donating a pair of boots every time I buy a new pair. This keeps my inventory down and allows me the enjoyment of shopping for new boots without feeling like I am being excessive or greedy.

Two thoughts about your video, if you get this far down the thread, I hope they’re helpful.
First, well, I understand what you are saying about picky customers but it doesn’t make sense to blame customers for a company that goes through financial trouble. The purpose of the company is to sell customers what they want. If they don’t want it, or if it’s not possible to provide it, that’s not the customers fault no matter how picky or ridiculous they are.
Second, with respect to the level of editing in your videos. What people want is authenticity, not polish. The Internet is filled with highly produced crap. If you are straightforward and brutally honest, think Rose Anvil, people will flock to your channel. But that requires that you’d be honest and straightforward so that people can trust you. If you go back and look at your reviews, almost everything you review is wonderful and awesome and really good and there are only tiny niggles and complaints. Occasionally, you tell us something is wrong fundamentally with a boot, but it’s not very common. frankly, I just don’t believe the review. I’m not saying you’re dishonest, please don’t misunderstand me I’m not saying that at all.
But what we want is authenticity. So be straightforward and direct even when it’s hard, even if it means that some of your friends might disagree with you, and you’ll grow your channel incredibly.
    Good luck!
